Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

LOCAL & RELIABLE DUMPSTER RENTAL 585-310-5117 www.expertdumpster.com 248 Route 31 - Macedon, NY

THANK YOU! On June 28th, my son and I were in the Wendy’s in Geneseo. We would like to thank the lady who paid for our lunch. Thank you & God Bless, Julia & Jeff Hayes AS GOES THE BEE Thanks to the Penny Saver for bringing attention to the plight of bees in the July 3rd issue. Our native bumblebees are also in great danger. I have four flower gardens and haven’t seen one bumblebee in 2020. People should be aware that common weed

killer (yes weed, not bug) is likely killing all kinds of bees. Choose natural 20% vinegar for a weed killer instead. SPONTANEOUS GENEROSITY! Many thanks to the lady who Saturday, June 27th at the local dollar store presented my husband and I with two generous gift cards. When I thanked her but expressed surprise, she said we reminded her of her grandparents. They must have been special to produce such a fine grandchild. Rest assured, we will pay it forward. WATER FOR ANIMALS! Please don’t forget the birds, bugs and bats because it is so hot. They are stressed and need clean water, too! THANKS FOR YOUR HONESTY! I would just like to thank the person who turned in my purse

FLOWER THIEF To the man in the grey hooded sweatshirt and white tennis shoes: Please kindly refrain from stealing the flowers that I and others work so diligently to plant. Your mother would not be amused nor your wife fooled by your cheap and thieving behavior for their Mother’s Day gift. Please go to a store and get a beautiful bouquet of flowers and possibly a card. It will be worth it when they see you actually put in the effort.

because their neighbors’ yard was overcome with buttercups and the grass is not cut the way they thought it should be: Really? Really? People are dying with the coronavirus daily, unable to breathe, and you are complaining about your neighbors’ grass? I pray you wake up soon to what really matters such as the Bible states--to love your neighbor as yourself--and pray for suffering neighbors all over the world.

PETTY COMPLAINTS Petty complaints do not deserve the space they take up. Look for the good in every situation! I also am tired of picking up others’ trash, but at least I can do so! Yes, it would be great if people picked up after themselves or better still, did not throw stuff along roads, MESSY LAWN In response to the person who but who do we have to blame? wrote that they felt like they Were they ever taught to pick lived next to the Addams Family up after themselves? READ CAREFULLY This is in response to the post Messy Lawns. I suggest you read the post in its entirety. It was in response to another post. It was encouraging them to keep up with their yard no matter what, because that is the right thing to do even if others don’t. It was also showing, how others, like myself, have to contend with neighbors who just don’t take care of their lawns and yard. So, read the post again to get the true meaning before firing off on someone. RIPPLE EFFECT I detest people who have to use rat poison. Not only is it a horrible way to die, but it can have a ripple effect. I’ve seen it with my own eyes working for a vet for several years, like the cat who ate a mouse that had eaten poison. The vet did all he could do but the cat didn’t make it. Then there were the eagles I watch on the internet whose first baby died because

at the Savers in Webster a few weeks ago. I have been struggling to get my unemployment, and losing my purse that day would have probably put me over the edge. May God bless you and your family! It’s nice to know there are good people out there. DEDICATED TO SERVICE Thank you to Myrtle, the iconic crossing guard in LeRoy who just passed away recently. She was a no monkey business, stay within the white lines, no one crosses unless she says so lady. Young or old you listened to Myrtle or she blew her whistle at you. Any child in her sights up Main Street or down were safe with her on guard. She was dedicated to her job and the students even at 90 years young. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

the dead rat its parent brought to the nest to feed it had died of rat poison; the baby eagle got some of the poison, which killed it. How do we know this? Wildlife people got the dead baby and did a necropsy (autopsy) on it. This was a symbol of our country, of our freedom, and man destroyed it. There are other ways to deal with mice and rats -- humane ways, too. Try using traps or smelly things. They don’t like strong smelling stuff like ammonia or bleach or even Irish Spring hand soap, peppermint oil, tea bags, etc. Remember, if you live with woods all around you, learn to live with the creatures in those woods. God put every creature on this earth for a reason. Humans are destroying this earth. I read that millions of birds are gone now. After they go, we will have more insects to contend with. It all has a ripple effect.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older

siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to

anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

Can I Pet That K-9?

www.AuctionZip.com

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My parents and I were marching in a demonstration, and we passed two police officers who each had a police dog. I love German Shepherds and I wanted to pet one of their dogs, but my parents wouldn’t let me. Why was it wrong to pet them? -- David, via email

It was June, and the world smelled of roses. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside. ~Maud Hart Lovelace, Betsy-Tacy and Tib, 1941

DEAR DAVID: K-9 police dogs, just like service animals, are working dogs that are trained to accomplish complicated tasks. When they’re at work, they should not be disturbed, even with a well-meaning pat. A K-9 may be trained to help apprehend suspects, or to detect illegal substances, or to perform search and rescue. They are large, energetic dogs, and though they’re welltrained, they can be aggressive. When a neighbor and their dog approach on the sidewalk, the polite way to interact is to ask permission to pet the dog. When K-9s and service animals are working, the best way to help them is to leave them be. Petting a service dog can confuse it or cause it to lose focus on the task it’s supposed to be doing. Petting a K-9 trained in apprehension can get your fingers nipped, or worse. If, and only if, a service dog’s owner or a K-9’s handler invites you to approach, should you do so. Police departments sometimes put on demonstrations or other events with their K-9s to meet the public. If you want to meet the dogs and ask questions of the police officers about what their workday is like, these are good opportunities to do so. When fairs and other public events start up again, find out if and where any such demonstrations are taking place.

Page 10

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Consumer advocacy experts say that it’s best to communicate your service issues with a company by email. This way, there is a ready paper trail that you can refer to. If you have to call a customer service line, ask for an email address that you can correspond with. * If your scallions are growing like crazy, you should know that you can freeze them to use later. Snip into smaller portions and freeze in a single layer for a couple of hours. Transfer to a container and store in freezer. When a recipe calls for scallions, just take what you need and use immediately. * Save energy and heat by using an electric kettle to make hot water for tea. It uses less energy than a stovetop kettle, and it won’t heat up your kitchen. * Stuff a musty cooler with crumpled up newspaper and seal. Remove and replace daily until the musty smell goes away. * When making cookie dough, make extra and freeze it in balls or slices. You’ll have an easy source of readyto-bake fresh cookies! * “You can use dishwasher detergent to clean your bathtub. I moved into a place with a very stained and dirty bathtub. I filled the tub with very hot water, put a cup of detergent into the water (the kind you put in a dishwasher, not soap) and stirred it to dissolve the powder. After letting it sit until it was just warm, I used a scrub brush to lightly lift away the soapy grime. It lifted stains out, too.” -- G.G. in South Carolina

Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is necessary, and parents and educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules.

The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. KEEP A SCHEDULE. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time. ASK QUESTIONS. Everyone is learning as they go, and further clarification may be needed. Students should email or chat with teachers if they don’t understand an assignment or are unsure about instructions. Teachers may be able to clearly model a math problem or explain a concept via video chat for students who need help. EXPLORE EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS. Many companies are offering free educational services while kids are home from school. Scholastic.com is offering online courses, Nat Geo for Kids, Fun Brain, PBS Kids, and Highlight Kids are other places to turn to for activities.

Publisher & President, Steve Harrison,

Steers our Paper through the COVID Storm BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n the face of COVID-19, many publishers have worked harder than ever to support their local businesses, friends and neighbors. Genesee Valley Publications, home of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, has been no exception. Businesses, organizations, events, employment opportunities and other needs drive advertising, yet all of these concerns have been directly affected by New York State’s Pause. Our President and Publisher, Steve Harrison, shares an inside look at guiding our paper through these turbulent times. Throughout COVID-19, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver (GVPS) was able to continue printing its popular weekly free community papers across its 5 County coverage. Like many businesses which remained open, several of its employees have been working from home. Recognizing just how many readers would find themselves at home more often, the GVPS looked for more ways to engage, inform and entertain them. “I am proud and pleased with what we have done with our paper and website with all of the content opportunities that it offers,” praised Harrison. “We are very grateful for all of the essential information (and non-essential) that our staff has found, organized and repurposed in our pages and on our website for readers and browsers to engage in.” These online features include all nine of our editions found along the bottom of our homepage. These state-of-the-art Digital Editions let readers “flip through” each weekly edition of our paper with clear, vivid image display and engaging, page-turn graphics. Ads can also be shared with friends and family! The GVPS has continued to provide its regular features, and it has added others, like keeping readers informed on COVID-19 events. It has also helped keep our communities in touch by sharing news sent in by our readers, such as local high school and college graduate photos, birthdays, anniversaries, pet photos, items to give and take, ways to volunteer, Hometown Events and reader favorite Positive Vibes and Rants. The GVPS also added Explore + More to provide fun and useful digital and virtual activities, information, and experiences. “Throughout the years, our readership has never waned from at least 8 out of 10 people reading our paper,” explained Harrison. “Readership is the key for any publication, and we have one of the highest grades in the country thanks to the quality of our ads and our variety of content like our editorial features. Given our recent sequester, I believe our readership has gone up even more with folks at home browsing media to avoid boredom.” “We have always enjoyed a lion’s share of faithful readers,” Harrison continued. “This share only seems to have grown. Print continues to have that staying power, and studies show it is more memorable, thanks in part to the tactile interaction with it.” With its reach of over 200,000 readers, the GVPS encourages communities to support their local businesses, which are so crucial to their wellbeing, before, during and after New York’s Pause. “Right out of the gate, we created a program on our website and asked our readers to buy gift cards for these businesses, such as local eateries, which were most effected by COVID-19 and had to close their doors,” Harrison recalled. “We offered businesses the opportunity to post a free message online to their communities through our website. We also created advertising specials and deep discounts to help our advertisers stay connected to their customers.”

As more and more businesses reopen, the Penny Saver looks forward to continuing to support them. “Some businesses were deemed “essential” and remained open, but many of our advertisers had to pause,” he noted. “Thankfully, now that we are in Phase 4 almost entirely, we are able to see our valued advertisers return slowly. Without local businesses, our communities dry up,” he added. “These businesses enhance our neighborhoods, and each time one closes, it has far reaching effects on our tax base, our community landscape and our quality of living.” Genesee Valley Publications along with their sister company, Penny Lane Printing & Promotional creates signage for local business regarding safety issues, traffic, all the COVID-19 guidelines and celebratory, “We’re Open!” announcements, all typically available within one day. Designed especially for restaurants are our new, very affordable, disposable menu placemats, answering the CDC’s recommendation for food establishments. “We also have a special promotion coming this August for both our readers and our advertisers, so stay tuned!” Harrison hinted. Harrison further encourages businesses to reach out to readers through advertising while also urging readers to take note of local ads. “We are all social people,” he said. “We have an innate need to get out and socialize, and there is no better way to do that than to support local business with your purchases. People need to know where they can shop locally for their needs, and COVID or no COVID, bringing buyers and sellers together has always been the mission of free community papers.” “Area businesses are doing an exemplary job of following CDC guidelines, cleaning, sanitizing and helping their customers feel safe,” Harrison concluded. “They need support, and our mission has always been to help our advertisers reach their customers. We will continue to do that by publishing one of the best-read community papers in America (1st place for General Excellence from Association of Free Community Papers in the US for 2020). This is what we do.”

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Starting lupines from seed is a little tricky. First, the seeds are hard and should be soaked overnight for best results with germination. They do best in a sandy, well-drained soil rather than a heavy clay. Lupines have a tap root so they can send down that long root most easily in a light, sandy soil. They need moisture but not wet feet. Lupines require patience. If seeds are planted in the spring, they will spend their first season getting started. ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

! N E P O We Are Now u!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Fructose Intolerance Is Rarely Diagnosed ---

We’ve missed yo

DEAR DR. ROACH: What can you tell me about fructose intolerance and/or malabsorption? Is there a genetic predisposition to this? Can it develop later in life? What are the symptoms, and how is it diagnosed? What type of doctor can best make a diagnosis? I’ve read conflicting reports online regarding the breath analysis test. Can it be treated, or must one eliminate foods containing fructose completely from one’s diet? My father was diagnosed with some sort of fructose problem years ago. I have no other information about his condition as he has passed away. I have developed some intestinal issues over the past year and have noticed I frequently experience stomach cramps after eating grapes and green apples, specifically. I am a vegetarian, and my diet consists of lots of fruits and vegetables. I’m wondering if I may have an issue with fructose. I hope not! What are your thoughts? -- D.K. ANSWER: Fructose intolerance is common, but it is seldom diagnosed. One cause, hereditary fructose intolerance, is a genetic disorder that can cause serious symptoms in infants and children, but it is usually mild in adults. The symptoms of fructose intolerance are very similar to another sugar intolerance -- lactose, the sugar in milk. Many people cannot tolerate lactose and if they eat too much of it will have cramping and diarrhea. Unlike lactose intolerance, which has a simple diagnostic breath test, there is no commonly available test for fructose intolerance. Fructose is a simple sugar, called a monosaccharide, and is found in many fruits, especially apples, pears, cherries and dates. Fructose is also found in honey and is part of the disaccharide sucrose (table sugar), where it is combined with glucose. What is fascinating yet poorly understood is that when fructose is consumed with glucose, it is absorbed better by people with fructose intolerance. Therefore, the goal in someone with inability to absorb fructose is to reduce or avoid fructose by itself. That means reducing foods and beverages sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, which is present in many products; eating high-fructose fruits only with meals; and reducing honey intake. Sorbitol, a sugar alcohol used as a sweetener in “diet” or “sugarless” foods, tends to worsen fructose intolerance and should be avoided. A vegetarian diet is very healthy for most people, and you shouldn’t have to give up your fruits. Just following some simple rules should reduce or eliminate your symptoms. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: A recent column on burning mouth syndrome generated a lot of letters, including several from physicians and dentists. The advice I heard over and over is that some dental products seem to worsen the symptoms, and changing toothpaste or dental rinse can help with symptoms. However, the culprit was not consistent. Some writers told me it was mint, others said cinnamon, while others thought it was the sodium lauryl sulfate that is in many toothpastes. Baking soda (or toothpastes based on them) seemed to be well-tolerated for many. Other irritants that made symptoms worse included spicy foods, carbonated beverages, caffeine and acidic foods (like citrus or tomato). Other advice I heard was soaking the tongue in a solution of Splenda and water; others recommended biotin supplements. The sheer number of letters leads me to suspect that this is a more common problem than I would have thought. Very few of my own patients have ever asked me about this in my practice. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Will Life Ever be Normal Again? The experts can't agree on when (if ever) the coronavirus will completely vanish, or if they'll be able to create a vaccine and when it will actually be safe to eat in a restaurant. Will this be like the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, with a mild first wave, followed by a deadly second wave months later? Just today there was snarling among the experts about whether asymptomatic people (those with the virus but no symptoms) can actually pass along the germs. What if it takes a very long time to return to normal? I think we need to be prepared for that, for having a new way of living, for now ... and working to make that OK. A highlight of my summer is likely to be the barbecue I'm planning: 10 good friends, all properly spaced around the yard (I've measured where the seats and food table will go), one person manning the grill, all the food courtesy of the grocery store deli so no one has to shop and cook, a boom box blasting tunes across the yard. It'll be great and has picked up my spirits just planning for it. I've also made adjustments to my budget, moving a few things in the Entertainment category. The Lunches and Dinners Out money got pushed over to Books, and I'll spend that cash on more e-books for my Kindle, since going to the library is out. What will your list look like, if you aim toward finding some relaxation and peace in our ongoing crisis? If you become weary of following social distancing guidelines and begin to think that all this unrest and angst about the coronavirus is unnecessary, go online to the National Geographic website and view the charts they've provided about how the Spanish flu spread (or didn't spread) through various cities, depending on how they handled lockdowns. It's an eye-opener.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

BOLD COLORS ADD VITALITY TO HOMES Colors on opposite ends of the color wheel will always complement each other. Green paired with pink (a lighter shade of green’s opposite, red) calls to mind the great outdoors. These hues can add a touch of floral spring sunshine even when that season has long since passed. Opt for a deep green and a carnation pink for maximum impact. And don’t forget a vase full of fresh blooms as the finishing factor. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS If you find a honey bee swarm on your property, contact a local beekeeper who may be able to safely collect and relocate that swarm so it will produce honey and provide the additional benefits associated with healthy bees. People can also support beekeepers’ work by purchasing local honey. Not only does it keep jobs in the area, but some research also suggests that consuming local honey can help reduce seasonal allergies. WebMD says the practice is based on immunotherapy. Local honey contains traces of local pollen that may be responsible for seasonal allergies. Repeated exposure to small doses of this pollen might help bodies develop natural immunities.

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.
