Prevent summer sun and heat damage to your car Come summertime, people anticipate spending plenty of time outdoors enjoying the warm weather and taking in the scenery. In addition to lazy days spent at the beach or around the pool, summer is a great season for road trips and other weekend getaways.
While many people look forward to the sunshine and heat of summer, extreme weather can be problematic for vehicles. The warmer season can take its toll on car paint and mechanical components can bake under the glaringsunandheat.Furthermore, temperatures can quickly escalate inside the vehicle, potentially damaging upholstery andanythingelseinside.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT
Think about the purpose. Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that don’t grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards with sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds. Fencing, another form of hardscaping, is essential for establishing property boundaries and adding privacy.

Q&A Master Gardeners with
What plants are best for: full sun, partial, and full shade around the Rochester area?
While this question is almost impossible to answer, as every landscape designer would have differed views, when it comes to selecting plants for different lighting conditions in the Rochester area, native plants are a great choice, following the “Right Plant. Right Place.” principle. Here are some recommendations:
Full Sun: Some native plants that thrive in full sun include Black-eyed Susan, Purple Coneflower, Butterfly Milkweed, and Little Bluestem. These plants are adapted to the local climate and will flourish in areas with direct sunlight.
Partial Shade: For areas with partial shade, consider planting native species like Wild Geranium, Virginia Bluebells, Foamflower, and Wild Ginger. These plants can tolerate some shade while still providing beauty and ecological benefits.
Full Shade: In areas with full shade, native plants like Woodland Phlox, Wild Columbine, Wild Bleeding Heart, and Wild Ginger are excellent choices. These plants are adapted to low light conditions and will add color and interest to shady spots.
By selecting native plants that are well-suited to the specific lightingconditionsinyourgarden, youcancreateasustainable and thriving landscape while supporting the local ecosystem.

Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.
GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING
Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.
Creating And Growing Plants Worth Knowing
What to Do with Your Old Electronics (Family Features) Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, cameras - electronic devices are a big part of American life. In fact, Americans own an average of 24 electronic products per household, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. With technology changing so rapidly and new “it” devices hitting the market every few months, a lot of those devices get discarded quickly. That adds up to a lot of potential e-waste. Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to keep old electronics out of the waste stream.
Donate. Donations give schools, nonprofits and lower-income families access to equipment they might not otherwise afford. Before donating, check with the organization to see what they need.
Trade Up. If you are ready to upgrade to something new, programs such as RadioShack’s Trade & Save let you swap retired technology for store credit toward your purchase.
Recycle. Electronics in nonworking condition should be recycled. Check www.Earth911.com or www.e-stewards.org to find a recycling center near you.
Don’t Forget the Batteries. Recycling your rechargeable batteries is another easy step you can take.
By reading the scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me. The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green. The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet.

Electric motorcycles
Thank You York Vet Hospital
We recently lost our two girls (cats) within a month. One was expected but the other was a shock as one week she was fine and the other not. The care that they received from the staff, especially from Dr. Dan, was amazing. They squeezed us in for appointments and were so compassionate and honest. We are so lucky to have a local place to take our pets. A big thank you for all of those who take care of beloved animals!
Thank you!
I did not ask his name, but I would like to thank the gentleman that returned our shopping cart at Walmart Saturday in the rain. He had to get wetter than necessary waiting as we finished unpacking it. Thank you with a capital T!
With the number of electric motorcycles gaining popularity and getting more powerful, there is a concern for safety from a few points of view.
A traditional (gas powered) motorcycle must be inspected yearly, licensed, insured and ridden with its headlight on by a rider who has taken and passed a rider’s test and must be wearing a DOT approved helmet and follow the same rules of the road that cars and trucks follow.
Some E-Bikes can go over 40 miles per hour and do not have the same requirements as a traditional motorcycle nor is the rider subject to the same regulations as the traditional motorcycle rider is.
I have observed E-Bikes riding on sidewalks, riding against traffic on roads, passing other vehicles and not safely following the rules of the road. I think E-Bikes are a great form of transportation and look forward to when they are safer for the rider and other vehicles on the road.
The Entitlement of the [local road] Coners
I am struck by the sense of entitlement exhibited by many [local road] residents here, as they use cones and other claim staking devices to commandeer public property for personal use during July festivities.
Fundamentally, a property right is a negative right - the right to exclude others from using an asset. If I were to park my car in your driveway or on your lawn in July or any other time because I feel entitled to do so, I'm sure you would be justifiably brusque in informing me of your right to exclude me. (You might even growl "GET OFF MY LAWN.") In contrast, you have no right to exclude me from using an open parking space on the right-ofway of a public highway. Please explain why you think otherwise. And don't whine it's because of the property taxes you pay. I think the lake towns should ban the practice of coning public parking spaces. OR create a database of the public parking spaces and auction them off online as leases to the highest bidders.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Man’s Restless Legs Raise up to a Foot in the Air at Night
DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you have any recommendations to stop restless legs at night? My husband has been to many doctors to find a cause or a solution to stop them. His legs have raised up as much as a foot in the air at night, constantly jumping and causing many sleepless nights. No one seems to have a solution for him. -- J.O.
ANSWER: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common condition where people have the urge to move their legs. It’s usually worse at night and associated with an unpleasant sensation that is relieved by movement. People with RLS often have involuntary jerking movements of their legs during sleep, unimaginatively called “periodic limb movements of sleep.”
Your husband may have these periodic limb movements without RLS, which is then considered periodic limb movement disorder. Treatment recommendations require an exact diagnosis. I often see his condition misdiagnosed or continue on for years without a diagnosis. The diagnosis is confirmed by a sleep study where the limb movements are recorded and characterized. Once the diagnosis is made, there are a few important considerations:
The first is that this condition often coincides with iron deficiency, which should be looked for and treated, if necessary. (The underlying cause for iron deficiency also needs to be found.) It may take weeks or even months after iron replacement for the leg movements to get better. Prior to medication treatment, a review of any medicines your husband takes is appropriate, as some can cause similar symptoms. Regular exercise, avoidance of caffeine and alcohol, and good sleep (ironically) can all improve symptoms in some people.
If medicine is needed, medications like pregabalin or pramipexole may be the first-line treatment, depending on the results of the sleep study and how intermittent the symptoms are. A new therapy called neurostimulation is a drug-free approach that has been shown to be effective. One device, the tonic motor activation, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for RLS and will hopefully be available shortly.
But there are many experts in this condition. He should see a sleep medicine expert.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.
Rooftop venues: Few backdrops inspire the awe of city skylines, especially when couples wait to get hitched until night has fallen and buildings have lit up. Rooftop restaurants and bars have undergone a resurgence in recent years, and these facilities are tailor-made for city-dwelling couples who want an enviable backdrop for their nuptials. Many such establishments are even affiliated with hotels, which can simplify wedding planning.
Keep Pets Safe When the Temperatures Climbs!
• Never leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. ...
• Limit exercise on hot days.
• Walk your pet in the grass if possible, to avoid hot surfaces burning their paws.
• If your pet is outside, make sure they have access to shade and plenty of cool water.

Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

Spinach is said to have originated in Persia, and it was later brought to India and China via Nepal in 647 A.D. – known as ‘Persian green’ in China. Spinach was then introduced to Sicily by the Saracens in 827
A.D. It was later brought to Spain by the Arabs in the late 12th century, called ‘the chief of leafy greens.’ It then spread to England and France in the 14th century, known for a while as ‘the Spanish vegetable’ in England. In the U.S., spinach became popular in the 1800s. In the 1930s, there was a boost in spinach consumption due to the fame of Popeye.

ECelebrate Independence Day Every Day with Al Sigl
BY PEGGY FORTUNE
ach July, Al Sigl Community of Agencies highlights the stories of individuals who are leading more independent lives with the help of Al Sigl Member Agencies:
Latrice, who was featured in one of Al Sigl’s earliest Independence Day campaigns, uses every opportunity she can to educate others that people of all abilities have powerful stories to share. She helped create a unique creative writing partnership between CP Rochester and the University of Rochester called the Inspiration Project, which pairs participants with college students. Now in its 14th year, Latrice remains an integral part of the collaboration to highlight the experiences and aspirations of people with special needs.
Jeff moved to Rochester from Long Island 20 years ago and has been with CP Rochester ever since. Along with living in one of the CP Rochester houses, Jeff attends the Day Habilitation Program. He likes to help out and stay busy. At the Winton Campus, he helps deliver packages, monitor equipment, and other important jobs. When not working, Jeff enjoys visiting his friends and being creative through his artwork and storytelling.

Instead of playing field hockey in Europe a er college, she moved back to Upstate NY to be closer to family. Emily found Empowering People’s Independence (EPI) and joined a structured support group for adults with epilepsy. She says, “Meeting other adults with epilepsy and working through the challenges and emotions of being capable of working and living an independent life while being unable to drive has been extremely helpful.”
Jakobe is a two-year-old learning to communicate with others at Rochester Hearing & Speech Center. He has learned to identify photos on the screen and connect them to words to ask for items at snack time, to listen to his favorite songs in class, and more. “Using this device has made him much happier, as he can express his opinions now,” shares Speech Language Pathologist Debra Cecere. “It goes everywhere with him – from class to home and then to the next program he will attend when he ages out of Early Intervention.” Melissa, RHSC Special Educator, adds, “Jakobe’s frustration levels have significantly decreased since learning to use his communication device. He lets us know his needs and wants.”

For Renee, community habilitation is a vital resource, offering support and empowerment within their community. Renee thrives under the support of Elisha, a dedicated member of the Starbridge team.
“Before I started, I didn’t realize all of the services Medical Motor Service provides,” says Melvin, who started driving to help stay busy during retirement. “I work with all ages, from babies to 90-year-olds,” he says with a laugh. “I like to say we’re helping deliver people, not packages, so you have to be flexible. Some riders need a bit more time. It feels good to help.”
Suzanna had been living with MS for 15 years when she reached the point where she could no longer work. “It was a scary time,” she remembers. “MS Navigators from the National MS Society guided me through challenges with my employer and health insurance. ey also helped me find safe, affordable, accessible housing.” Suzanna is a top fundraiser at WalkMS in Canandaigua. “As a Team Captain, hosting fundraisers has helped me overcome the stigma of using a mobility scooter in public. Now, every time I roll into a Bills game and take my place amongst the crowd that’s on its feet – that is my Independence Day.”
Renee and Elisha take part in activities like exercising, not just for physical health but also to boost confidence. Budgeting is another key area the two work on, allowing Renee to budget for necessities and plan for her needs. Renee is gaining vital skills, independence, and a vibrant social life within her community, truly creating a fulfilling and enriching life.
