While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. How To Stay Positive While Social Distancing As recently as late February, much of the populations of the United States and Canada were living life as they normally would. A few short weeks later, when COVID-19 began to affect a greater number of people, many businesses grinded to a halt. Schools were closed to students, and governments instructed people to stay home as much as possible. “Social distancing” quickly became part of the general lexicon, with people in many cities and towns staying six feet apart from others when venturing into the public, but mainly staying at home. While it is still too soon to determine the lasting impact of COVID-19, the psychological effects of social distancing were apparent almost immediately. Anyone who has had some trauma in the past may discover that social distancing rekindled previous traumatic feelings. Any form of isolation can be devastating to a person’s mood because they are left with their own thoughts. Various strategies can help to ease the potential psychological burden of social distancing and give people a new perspective on their situation. • Focus on the positives. Look at what you have gained rather than lost from social distancing. This may translate to more time with the family; opportunities to exercise more; time to engage in a hobby; or chances to finish up projects around the house. • Get fresh air. Where laws allow, make time daily to get outdoors, even if it’s for a short jaunt around the neighborhood. Seeing new sights can be good for the mind, and exercise is also good for the body. • Establish a routine. A routine helps anyone feel more in control, which is helpful when so much of the consequences of COVID-19 are beyond individuals’ control. Get up and go to bed on your typical schedule, eat meals at regular intervals and make time for different activities each day. • Reach out to people. Social distancing does not mean you have to cease being social. Contact friends or family on the phone, through video chats or even speak with them at a safe distance in person. If you need professional help, many therapists now offer telehealth therapy sessions. • Turn off the news. Take a break from the constant onslaught of information. This can reduce stress and anxiety and allow the brain to focus on positive thoughts and ideas. • Express gratitude. Give thanks for what you have each day and try to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Social distancing has been a trial for everyone involved. Certain strategies can help turn grief into gratitude. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

3. General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

CONSIDERING DIVORCE? CONSIDER MEDIATION. Divorce and separation are emotionally draining. There are so many decisions to be made regarding the division of property and debts. Who gets the house? What about retirement funds? What about the kids? Where do they live? How will college bills be paid? Mediation helps you and your spouse make those decisions by guiding you through the decision making process. The final decisions are made by you and your spouse; not a judge. Mediation is: non-adversarial, private, less expensive, faster. If you are considering divorce or separation, consider mediation. MCT Mediation has offices at Spot Cowork in Victor and Henrietta. DEAR C.J.: I know that’s annoying! Cats are opportunists, escape artists and seemingly expert lockpickers that will take every chance to explore something that smells interesting. A trash can filled with food scraps is often irresistible. Once a cat has figured out where all the good table scraps are, it’s going to be very hard to train them out of that particular behavior. You can still try some deterrents. When you’re in the kitchen and see Blaze creeping toward the trash can, hiss loudly and say “Nyah!” or “Leave it!” Or, keep a shaker can filled with pennies within reach and shake it at him when he approaches the trash can. When you’re not in the kitchen, Blaze may still keep trying to get into the trash can. For now, bungee or tape down the lid so that he can’t pry it upward with his paws. Then, look for a trash can that has a locking lid, which will be much harder for your cat to lift up. This will be a huge help at night, when you can’t rush into the kitchen to try and stop Blaze from his nighttime raids. Best of luck, and remember to be patient and consistent with deterrent training methods. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Blaze” has figured out how to lift the lid on the kitchen trash can. He’ll hop in there at any opportunity to get at the food scraps. I don’t want him eating those, and I’m worried he’ll get sick from raw or spoiled food. How can I stop this behavior? -- C.J. in Santa Monica, California

Pickup trucks have long been among the most popular vehicles sold, and Statistica states the number of new pickup trucks sold in the United States continues to grow. Between 2015 and 2016, 2.7 million pickups were sold, and some 2.24 million of those were full-sized pickups. A recent study from the Automotive News Data Center found the big three pickup manufacturers, which include Ford, GM and Dodge, sell an average of 6,500 trucks every day in North America. While the popularity of pickup trucks may be evident to today’s motorists, just who is behind the wheels of those trucks may come as a surprise. According to a recent study from MaritzCX, covering the 2016 model year, more people from affluent families are opting for pickup trucks than economy cars. Other factors also may be contributing to the popularity of pickup trucks. A survey from Insure.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers ages 18 and up to rank the kinds of vehicles driven by the most attractive members of the opposite sex. The survey found that women prefer drivers of black pickups. Motorists who have never before driven pickup trucks but are mulling whether or not to join the truck-loving masses can consider a host of factors as they begin looking for trucks. Size: Pickups are larger than many other vehicles and tend to be heavier. As a result, when driving a pickup, leave more space for braking and do not tailgate. Blind spots: Because pickup trucks are longer than cars, they may have larger blind spots. Drivers should adjust the mirrors to diminish as much of their blind spots as possible. Also, give ample notice when changing lanes or making turns. Reverse: Upon purchasing a pickup, first-time truck owners may benefit from practicing driving in reverse so they can grow accustomed to doing so in a truck. Hauling gear: Be sure to properly restrain items that are hauled in the pickup truck bed, or invest in a bed cover so nothing is lost and safety is not compromised. Inclement weather driving: Pickup trucks have very little weight in the back when their beds are empty. This can cause trucks to fishtail on wet or snowy roads. Alleviate this by placing some sandbags in truck beds before driving in poor weather. Page 7

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Master

Gardeners

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

1.How often should I be harvesting the herbs in my garden? Herbs should be harvested when the oils that provide their flavor and aroma are at their highest. Once the plant has enough foliage to maintain growth, you can begin harvesting. For instance, Basil can be harvested when the plant reaches 6-8 inches high; sprigs of Oregano once the plant is 3-4 inches tall; Cilantro when the stems are 6-12 inches long. When you cut stems, leave new growth below the cut so that the plant will become bushier. The rule of thumb is to cut no more than 1/3 of the plant

back at a time so that it will continue to grow and thrive throughout the season. Cut a few stems at a time. Depending on the size of the plant or the number of them you have, you may be able to harvest every few days. Young leaves have the best flavor, so continue to cut back 2 or 3 nodes of new growth on a regular basis. The best time to harvest is in the morning when the morning dew has evaporated, and the plant is dry. Dusk is fine as well. Avoid harvesting in the heat of the day. Herbs are best harvested before they start to flower (or bolt) to ensure that they continue to produce new leaves suitable for harvesting.

I have Irises that are beautiful but taking over my garden, should I be dividing them yearly? Iris is a very tough plant. If it is in a good location it will spread readily. The iris tubers grow best with the top of the tuber just above the soil surface. They grow longer each year, and may also produce offshoots on the sides, which will form new tubers.

If you dig one up, you will find the healthiest roots on the “front” end, where the flower stem emerges. It will not produce more flowers further back on that tuber. You can cut off the back end, then replant. Yours are blooming nicely, so you could just remove some plants around the edges and give them away each year. If you notice the bed is not flowering well over time, you may need to thin it by removing the spent ends.

KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND (NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come. Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort. For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning. The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain. Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop. Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full. Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include: • Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching • Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users • Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can • Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean • Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch • Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too Learn More: For further facts about sinks and faucets that can make your kitchen safer, more efficient and even better looking, visit blancoamerica.com. MOMENTS IN TIME * On July 19, 1879, Doc Holliday commits his first murder, killing a man for shooting up his saloon. Despite his reputation as a deadly gunslinger, Doc Holliday engaged in just eight shootouts during his life, and killed only two men. (The History Channel)

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you go to a yard sale and an item catches your eye, don’t be afraid to haggle. If the owner can’t agree to your price, give him your name and phone number. If it doesn’t sell, he might be ready to accept a lower price. * “You can sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your porcelain sinks for a non-harsh scrub. It serves a double purpose, because it will also freshen and absorb odors, then get washed right down the drain!” -- M.M. in Texas * Wash and save yogurt cups for kids to use for painting. You can set several in a jelly roll pan to keep them together and upright. * “I have a beautiful glass window in my front door. Unfortunately, once a day, the sun comes streaming through it and seems to magnify. I have a couple of hooks that are backed by suction cups. I can hang a garden flag from the hooks to cover the window. Sometimes I even use it at night for privacy. It still looks pretty from the other side if I don’t take it down, and it didn’t involve any holes in my door!” -- W.D. in Kentucky * Make-up bags make the perfect place to stash extra cords and accessories for your computer or other devices. Put them in a basket and all your tech will stay orderly. * Car Wash Tips: Use a soap that’s made for vehicles, because it’s less likely to strip the protective coating off your paint. Don’t wash in full sun if possible. If you must, then work in small sections to keep soap from drying on the car. Rinse off your sponge regularly -- the dirt and grime can scratch the surface. Use a microfiber cloth to dry.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

LAWN & LANDSCAPING PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH

Family of 1 $29,928 Family of 2 $39,144 Family of 3 $48,360 Family of 4 $57,564

Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

HOME IMPROVEMENT TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * As Shakespeare said, what’s in a name? A duck is called a duck because it ducks its head under the water to feed. The animal was named after the verb, not the other way around. * In the era of TV dinners, it wasn’t enough that you ATE your veggies. No, etiquette experts still found time to make some interesting rules about HOW you consumed them as well. According to one guide, asparagus should be cut in half in order to avoid “the ungraceful appearance of a bent stalk ... falling limply into someone’s mouth.” * What’s in a name? Part 2: The French name for cotton candy is “Barbe a papa,” or “dad’s beard.” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Free Entertainment To help us stay away from the mainstream news that has nothing but disturbing commentary and visuals, I've compiled a list of more upbeat places to investigate online. Best of all -- they're free! Games - Do online searches for your favorite games to play on your computer, such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles, mahjong and vintage Pac Man, Myst and Donkey Kong. (Use "classic games" or "retro games" as your search terms for the old ones.) Language classes - Duolingo (www.duolingo.com) is the best language learning site I've found, and you don't have to pay anything! They keep track of your progress and move you right along once you've mastered a section. At this point there are over 30 languages you can study. Classic TV shows - See if you have MeTV (www.metv.com)on your cable TV lineup. It shows all classics. You'll find "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Twilight Zone," "Mannix," "Barnaby Jones," "The Flintstones," "Wagon Train," "The Waltons," "The Carol Burnett Show," "I Love Lucy," "Perry Mason" and much more. Check the website for the shows and schedule for your area. Vintage music - While you're on the MeTV website, click Music at the top for free vintage tunes. Or you can search in a browser for "free online music" and find dozens of vintage music archives. Even Gutenberg has free music, everything from Bach to Irving Berlin. However, you need to listen to only one at a time on Gutenberg.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Progressive Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award Presented to Richard Enst BY RODNEY L. DUTTON, CANANDAIGUA LIONS CLUB PRESIDENT, DISTRICT 20E2 ZONE 4B CHAIR

Canandaigua city resident Richard Ernst was presented with an award for 24 years of dedicated service to the community. Due to a need for social distancing, the presentation took place with just a few Lions on Richard’s patio, but the informal nature of that presentation doesn’t distract from the sincerity of appreciation for Richard’s accomplishments. Present at the ceremony were (pictured left to right) Lions Dr. Geoff Hallstead (Treasurer), Richard Vara (Board member), Richard Ernst (Past District Governor and current Lion Tamer), Rod Dutton (President) and Bill Williams (Past Council Chair-NYS Lions from Rushville Lions). Also in attendance but not pictured are Canandaigua Lions Diane Seward (Secretary) and Marie Vara (Member).

D

ick joined the Canandaigua Lions Club at the invitation of Lion Rod Dutton in December 1996. Just one year later, he was already fully active in Lions as Lion Tamer and Bulletin Editor, and from that point he launched a marathon of service! During his long Lions career, Dick sponsored five members and held multiple positions in the Club and District. He is a two-time Club President, was Vice President seven times, Lion Tamer for nine years, Tail Twister for three, and Director for twelve years (six of which were as Membership Director). Not only has Dick been active as an officer in the Club, he has also been Chair–in some cases, multiple times–of the following Club committees: Club Bulletin, Club Pin, Beeper Ball, Publicity, Wood Library Liaison, Red Cross Blood Drive, Multi-Club Program/Club Programs, and Membership and was key in establishing and carrying out our vision screening efforts, most recently called KidSight. Dick grew the program to screen children city-wide in a variety of settings and was responsible for obtaining the photo screening camera by applying for a grant through F.F. Thompson Hospital. Dick held the position of Zone Chair in 2006-07, Region Chair the following two years, and First Vice District Governor in 2009-10 prior to doing his home club proud as the District Governor for District 20E2 for the 2010-11 Lions year. As a Past District Governor, Dick was a member of multiple District Committees such as District Global Membership, NYS & Bermuda Foundation, and District Special Funds Project Chair. He also received recognition in the form of International President’s Certificate of Appreciation (2007 and 2013), International President’s Leadership Award (2009),

International President, Lightkeeper - Harbor Light, Master Award, Silver Level (2011), and District Governor’s Certificate of Appreciation in 2015. His community service as a Lion has not gone unnoticed by the Canandaigua Lions; he earned a Melvin Jones Fellowship in the 201112 Lions year and his first Robert J. Uplinger Award during 2014-15. This year’s Progressive Uplinger award is further proof of his longterm dedication to the Club and to the community. We proudly present this Progressive Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award to our friend and fellow Lion Richard Ernst with our thanks, gratitude, and pride in calling him a Canandaigua Lion. Enjoy this article? One positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. A SPECIAL THANK YOU! I want to give a special thank you to the “greeter” I had at Walmart on June 30th. His name is Bob. When he saw me walking with a cane, Bob immediately took my arm and helped get me a riding cart. Bob was so gentle and caring. He blessed my whole day! He also helped me when I came out. Walmart is very blessed to have such a man as Bob working for them.

CLEANLINESS IS THE BEST PREVENTION Wearing masks is really a false sense of security, as touching your face is the more real danger if you don’t wash your hands with soap and water. So, it doesn’t matter if you wear a face mask or not if you don’t use prudent cleansing whether you are out in public or not. Wash your hands! I have seen restaurant workers not washing their hands before touching others’ food orders, so the real danger is lack of cleanliness. neighborhood has to hear, even during the day. Please understand that your neighbors have their own lifestyles, which are likely very different from yours. My taste of music is different from yours, and by the time it makes its way inside my home, the sound is very distorted and sounds horrible. I am trying to work, sleep, read, or watch TV over here, which is a very basic right I have as a homeowner, but your music is making it impossible to do the things I want to do. Please don’t put me in the uncomfortable position of having to talk to you about it. I’ve tolerated it without saying anything because I try to be a good neighbor. It’s not right, and you’re not being neighborly, considerate, or thoughtful. Actions affect others.

That reminds me of an old saying from a comedian, “Here comes the judge.” At least the skit was funny when the comic said it. Your post made no sense whatsoever.

ABOUT THE WOMAN I am not saying people shouldn’t go out. I am addressing those who aren’t wearing their masks in public, only come into the store for one thing, are rude to other people and employees, and are being jerks. I am an essential worker. I get it. You have to work, but I work at a grocery store, so I hear talk like this all the time, and I overheard her. Shame on you all who defend her, and you yourself are offenders. We’re back to where we were in March and not flattening the curve because you’re bored and need to unnecessarily go out. Do some other activities at home or walk down your road. So, thanks. A CHUCKLE Thanks for being rude to me and In response to the post entitled, the stressed employees trying “Here come the cough police!” to stay healthy and deal with

This is obscene! it isn’t progress, only gouging, and ditto electric windows and doors. ROAD RAGE I was on a main road during this time out in the country not on a bumpy country road where I want to wreck my car by going 60 through potholes and bumps. On the main road that links to these country roads however, it is not illegal to go five mph over from 55 to 60, especially when I’m terrified the person behind me is so close they’re a hair’s breath away from causing an accident. That’s not speeding, and it’s not necessary to go 70, 80, 90, 100 down roads, main roads or country ones or back roads. Just stop.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.
