By Lucie Winborne * While filming “Jailhouse Rock” in 1957, Elvis Presley inhaled his tooth cap as he slid down a pole in the opening dance number. It lodged in his lung and required surgical removal, but aside from a little hoarseness for a few days, the King made a fairly easy recovery. * The popular kids’ game “Operation” was invented by John Spinello, a sophomore at the University of Illinois in 1962, as part of a class assignment. Sadly, he only made $500 off the game after selling the prototype. * By the way, in case you’ve ever wondered, the “patient” in “Operation” is named Cavity Sam.

VISION GREATLY AFFECTS DRIVING ABILITY
Call for your appointment today!
NYS SAFETY/ EMISSIONS INSPECTION $ *
332 W. Main St., Honeoye Falls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 6,165 people ages 65 and older were killed in automobile accidents in 2015, representing 18 percent of all traffic crashes in the United States, and declining vision may have been a factor in many of those accidents. Older drivers can make certain changes to improve their safety on the roadways. Reduce driving at night. The group AAA says by age 60 eyes need three times as much light to see as they did at age 20. Over time pupils get smaller and do not dilate as much in dark conditions at night, making it harder to see. Limit driving at night as much as possible. Accommodate for glare. Invest in anti-glare coatings for glasses to minimize glare from the sun and oncoming headlights. Be especially cautious at intersections. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 40 percent of the fatal collisions that occur for people age 70 and older take place at intersections. Taking more time to assess oncoming traffic and make sure intersections are clear can save lives. Get frequent vision checks. Annual eye exams are recommended by the American Optometric Association. This can help older drivers be aware of shortcomings in their vision. Other drivers Drivers of any age with vision issues should take heed of their limitations and make modifications as needed. Driving with macular degeneration. Macular degeneration affects central vision. It happens when deterioration of the central portion of the retina occurs. The American Macular Degeneration Foundation says MD is the leading cause of vision loss. As MD impacts vision, driving may need to be reduced or ceased. Color blindness impacts driving. Those with color blindness may need to use caution when identifying traffic signals or the brake lights of other vehicles. It may take practice and driving with someone who sees colors to become comfortable. Cataracts can blur vision. Those with cataracts may have blurry vision and see halos around lights that can make driving challenging. Cataracts also may make it more difficult to see pedestrians against the landscape, especially at night. Treating cataracts can improve vision significantly. Page 3

Social Security disturbance
S E V RA Angels among us! On Saturday afternoon I was at a checkout in Wal-Mart with a cart of groceries. Behind me was a young man with three items in his hands. I asked him if he would like to go ahead of me. He replied that would be great. After he checked out, he handed the cashier a $20 bill and told her to use it toward my grocery bill. I told him that it was not necessary. I want to say thank you for a kind deed. I will pay it forward. Yes, there are angels among us. Sometimes they stand in the most unlikely places. Married bliss My husband and I were utterly astounded when we were told that the delightful young couple who had sat at the next table and with whom we had been chatting as we ate, had paid for our very nice dinners! They had told us that they had just gotten married that very day, and we wished them a long and happy life together as they left. We greatly appreciate, and thank them for, their so very generous gift! We will pay it forward! Lost FitBit While shopping at Aldi's in Batavia I lost my Fitbit. Thanks goes out to the person who turned it into a worker. I did go back within an hour to pick it up. Thank you for being honest. There still are good people in the world. Good customer service I feel like those gathering carts and janitors in general were not given enough credit during the pandemic. Next time you see them, give a bit of gratitude! They really deserve it. All of your hard work and dedication is not in vain, and we appreciate you!
I found it disturbing that you would want to cut off Social Security and Medicare. Either you have not worked a day in your life, or you are self-employed. I have been taxed every paycheck I have received for the last 52 years, putting money into the Social Security system which includes Medicare. I agree Medicaid is out of control and needs to be revamped to cover the ones that really are unable to work due to debilitating conditions. Don't tell me these programs are an entitlement when I have paid for it many times over. The reason the system costs so much is the politicians over all these years misused the tax funds that hard-working people put into it. The Social Security System and Medicare are not a handout. People work many years for this benefit, and our Government was charged to handle it in such a way that the tax income would cover the cost. I really wonder what you do for a living that you would not understand the basic concept of this program.
Still there My mother went to a local store. She bought a pair of jeans for me. When she gave them to me, I realized that the alarm tag was still on them. Since it's important to take off, I asked my mother what happened. She said that the cashier said that he didn't have the machine to take it off. The alarm didn't go of when she was leaving the store, but I fear that if I enter a store with the jeans, the alarm will go off. I am not happy.
Recyclables wasted I recently took a new job. I was shocked at the tons of alcohol bottles, soda cans, and water bottles just dumped with the trash. I discussed this with the owners who added two green recycle bins. So many homeless and needy stop by for help, and they cash in these precious resources. Why don’t gas stations and convenience stores provide bins? Thousands of dollars could be collected for the many worthy causes out there as well. These businesses could also get charity credit on their taxes. Why aren’t recycle bins required, considering the terrible state our natural environment is in? It’s humane and helps preserve our dwindling resources like the water it takes to manufacture glass and plastic containers. Please change your ways! Check out what’s happening out west with drought, heatwaves, wildfires and the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and the Hoover Dam which provides California, Nevada and Arizona farmers with water to irrigate with, water that is drying up. We in the Northeast have no idea what water shortage is and waste water while the West perishes.

Celebrating the Most American of Freedoms BY KEN PAULSON
T
he 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence knew what they were getting into. As we celebrate the 4th of July 245 years later with flags and fireworks, it’s easy to forget that these patriots risked death to give a new nation life. If you’ve never read the Declaration of Independence in its entirety, this is a good time to do so. More than two centuries later, it’s still a good read. These rebels, who would be accused of treason by Great Britain, wrote the document in a reasoned manner, attempting to convey to the world that their cause was a just one. At its most basic, it’s a demand for a divorce, with one party explaining why the marriage can’t be saved. What’s fascinating, though, is how the list of complaints about the King of England not only cited justification for the break-up, but it also telegraphed the principles the new nation would insist upon when establishing its own governance. The entire document was a bold statement, speaking truth to power. As it established its own future, this new nation would have to find a way to guarantee free speech, particularly in regard to criticizing government. The Declaration of Independence lists more than two dozen examples of why the king “was unfit to be the ruler of a free people.” The new United States of America would need to create a check on those who abused their power. That would come from a free press. Much of the Declaration is devoted to examples of the king ignoring the colonies’ needs and maintaining a stranglehold on new legislation to address those needs. Clearly, the United States would have to guarantee petition and assembly. Memorably, the Declaration states that all men are endowed by their “Creator” with certain “unalienable rights.” This was an acknowledgement of a Higher Power without a specific reference to any religion. This new nation would go on to guarantee freedom of faith. Freedom of speech, press, and religion; the rights of petition and assembly: today, we see all five nestled together in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It took a war for independence and 17 years,

but those aspirations became the cornerstone of a young and vibrant country. Fast forward to the 21st century. A new survey of citizens around the globe by legal public policy center, Justitia, has assessed how citizens in 33 countries feel about freedom of speech. It found that most citizens in most countries feel free speech is important and positive, but they waver when presented with scenarios in which free speech offends others or hampers society. In order, Norway, Denmark, the U.S., and Sweden top the list. Citizens of these nations say they are steadfast in their support of free speech. At the bottom of the list sit Tunisia, Kenya, Egypt, and Pakistan. In a telling passage, Justitia quotes free speech expert and Columbia University President, Lee Bollinger, as saying that the U.S. is “the most speech-protective of any nation on earth, now or throughout history.” The report also notes that a 2015 Pew research study determined that no nation in the world was more supportive of free speech and a free press than the U.S. At our best – and not without lapses – we walk that talk. In 1776, our founders published a Declaration of Independence, but also a declaration of intent. Those early Americans sought “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” by creating a nation founded on freedom. But those freedoms must never be taken for granted, and our collective vigilance is essential. On the most American of holidays, let’s be sure to celebrate the most American of freedoms. Most of us strive to be just in our dealings with others. When we fail, we try to make it up to them and restore confidence in our relationships. This is an admirable quality and satisfies the Lord’s first requirement - to “do justly.” Next, we are to “love mercy.” When we sin, we fail God, and our realtionship with Him is broken. If we are to restore our relationship with Him, we must face God with the TRUTH about our sin and ask for His MERCY through the Lord Jesus Christ.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Poison Ivy? Gardener Shares Home Remedy ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Quite by accident, I have found a home remedy for poison ivy and poison oak. As an avid gardener, I get poison ivy once or twice a year. I always wash my hands, arms and any affected area with liquid soap. However, this time I was out of soap and used a liquid detergent with a degreaser. I put a small amount on my arm, rubbed it down my arm and added water to wash it off. I have tried different detergent degreasers over the past several months, and any of them will work. It makes sense, because poison ivy and oak have urushiol oil, and of course a degreaser would dissolve it and wash it away. I hope you can pass this on to your readers! -- F.C. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing, and I agree with your take on the issue. Poison oak, ivy and sumac all have the same irritating oil, urushiol, which is one of the few substances that can cause a severe hypersensitivity reaction the first time a person is exposed to it. Repeated exposures are often worse. The most important advice on these poisonous plants is not to get exposed in the first place. That means removing it if it’s in your yard, if possible, and knowing how to recognize and avoid it. Protective clothing is essential if you must be near it. If you are exposed inadvertently and recognize it, then removing the oil is urgent: Within 10 minutes is best, but washing off will help even if it’s two hours after exposure. Washing after the rash shows up isn’t helpful. Warm water with soap or detergent is recommended, but don’t over-vigorously scrub, because damaging the skin can make the rash worse. The oil can stay under the fingernails and on clothing. Clean under the nails carefully and wash clothing in hot water. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was receiving testosterone injections for a diagnosed low testosterone level (96, with the normal 300-720). I received testosterone injections for a number of years, as directed by my doctor at that time. Ultimately, I changed doctors and the new one prohibited the testosterone injections as “too dangerous to continue.” I objected then and am about to object again, since my symptoms in the past year continue to point to low testosterone, in my mind. I have low energy level, low libido and erectile dysfunction. -- M.J. ANSWER: If a person with normal testosterone takes a large amount of extra testosterone, such as athletes looking for a performance boost, there are significant risks. Scientists used to worry that a similar issue would be the case if a person with low testosterone took a replacement dose to get him into the normal range, but the fears of testosterone replacement therapy have been proven largely unjustified. Given your symptoms and your definite low level, experts would agree that you are a good candidate for long-term testosterone replacement therapy. The risks and benefits are not known with certainty, but the evidence so far suggests no serious risks and some potential benefits on heart health even beyond improvement in symptoms. I would a suggest consultation with an expert on testosterone replacement, such as a urologist. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it’s well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to one’s health. That’s why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside. Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain. Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun. Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It’s also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne Magnolia plants are so ancient that they’re pollinated by beetles, as they existed prior to the appearance of bees. A study by psychologists found that when 4- to 6-year-olds pretended to be Batman while doing a boring but important task, it helped them resist distraction and stay more focused. (We’re trying this the next time we wash the dishes.) Tootsie Rolls were added to soldiers’ rations in World War II due to their ability to withstand all weather conditions. In medieval games of chess, pawns that had been promoted to a queen were given the title of “adviser,” so as to not imply that the king had more than one queen or was guilty of adultery! Ancient Egyptians loved their cats so much that household members would shave their eyebrows as a sign of mourning when the cat died. Mourning ended when their brows had grown back. *** Thought for the Day: “I never thought in terms of being a leader. I thought very simply in terms of helping people.” -John Hume (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE
HANDYMEN/WOMEN
Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Cats Shouldn’t Get a Free Pass DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Could you explain why cats can poop in my garden and the owners are not responsible for them? Cats kill birds and chipmunks, and they dig in my garden. Children’s sandboxes get fouled by cats. Cat poop is really unpleasant and can spread diseases. It seems unfair that cat owners should get all the enjoyment out of them, but not have to be responsible for their messes. Why do cat owners get a free pass? What can be done to keep the cats from killing birds and leaving messes in my yard? -- Pat in Spokane DEAR PAT: You’re absolutely right. Cats can wreak havoc on the local environment as they don’t limit their hunting to mice: A 2013 study estimated that cats kill billions of songbirds per year in the U.S. alone (www.smithsonianmag.com and search for “The Moral Cost of Cats”). Yet owners who allow their cats outdoors often don’t think that their sweet, adorable Fluffy could be a neighborhood menace. That’s one reason I constantly ask owners to keep their cats indoors. It’s also for the cats’ personal safety; they’re at risk of being attacked by bigger wildlife or other cats. Right now, there are two things you can do. First, deter cats from coming onto your property. Scatter a mixture of used coffee grounds, lemon peels and vinegar around the perimeter of the yard (pans of vinegar also work). Cover exposed ground in garden beds with river rock to discourage digging. Second, raise awareness in the community. Spread the word about the damage cats do, and what owners can do to prevent it. Do this by talking with your neighbors and speaking at town or HOA meetings. Get the word out so the entire community can address the problem. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Leaving An Estate To Charity One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed.

Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.
Magic Maze WORDS WITH THREE R’S
When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.
STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.
