TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Real Estate _____________________5

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Vibes & Rants _____________________7

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Forgetting to preheat: Preheating the grill ensures that foods will cook quickly and as evenly as possible. Otherwise, meats can lose moisture and even stick to cooler grates. Reader’s Digest suggests preheating to between 350 F and 450 F depending on the food.

LOVE PETS The loss of a beloved pet accidentally killed by a car is beyond heartbreaking. But your pet’s death is not the responsibility of the driver. It’s the responsibility of the person in your household who deliberately or inadvertently let your pet out. Trying to shift blame to the driver is wrong, whether it’s for the death of your pet or for leaving your pet on the side of the road. You don’t know the reason the driver didn’t contact you, so stop assuming they’re a bad person. Can you imagine how heartbroken the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STEALING FLOWERS FROM A GRAVE SITE A couple weeks ago on a nice Saturday morning I took my family to visit my parents’ grave site in Rush, NY. My wife & I visit throughout the year and have taken care of my parent’s plot since my parents passed away around 2000. This year my oldest (17-year-old) daughter & I cleaned up and planted beautiful flowers around my parent’s headstone. It was a touching memorable moment. We visited their plot today just before Memorial Day to see how the flowers were doing and because my father was a veteran officer in the US Navy. We were shocked to discover someone had stolen the flowers we planted. Honestly, who steals $10 worth of flowers from someone’s grave site? It was awkward trying to explain the circumstance to my 3 young children. How incredibly disappointing, upsetting, and repugnant.

a pleasure to go camping this past weekend, to enjoy nature, breathe the fresh air, have campfires, roast marshmallows, make s’mores, and watch the stars. We have been cooped up for quite a while, so this was a welcome change of pace! PAY IT FORWARD Thank you to the person at Dunkin’ Donuts who paid for my coffee. It was a nice treat and I paid it forward!

PLEASE CALM DOWN! I agree with the post about people not respecting the cashiers, etc., who are supplying us with a service we really need. What is it with people? As the Governor put it so concisely weeks ago, “You don’t have the right to infect me or my loved ones.” Get over it already with the masks. You wear seat belts, don’t you? Do you think that isn’t necessary? It is the same with following a simple rule of wearing a mask. How simple can it be? No one is asking you for a kidney. Calm down and smell the flowers! LEARN HOW TO COUGH Cleanliness is the best prevention. I agree with that wholeheartedly. That’s why wearing a mask is so vital. I see people cough, into the open air or into their hands. Yet, we’ve been told time and again that if you cough, do so into your elbow. That is one reason why masks are beneficial!

Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Extend the life of your vehicle:

Give tires the eye test. The eye test can be an effective and quick w ay to detect tire damage. Uneve n w ear may be indicative of insufficient tire pressure or an alignment problem. Uneven w ear also may indicate t he vehicle is experiencing problems w ith its steering or suspension. But many times uneven w ear can be remedied by a simple tire rotation, so take your vehicle to your mechanic if you notice uneven w ear.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Blood in the Urine Won’t Just Go Away --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 92-year-old man in better-thanaverage health. I have had two episodes of blood in my urine in the past two months. I know this isn’t normal. At my age, I’d just like to make believe it didn’t happen. What’s my future like? -- Anon. ANSWER: Your future will shortly include, I hope, a visit to your regular doctor. Blood in the urine often is due to a urine infection or a kidney stone, but in older men, there is always a concern about a tumor, whether of the kidney, bladder or prostate. Pretending it didn’t happen is not a good solution, and your doctors will certainly take your age into account when looking at diagnostic possibilities and treatments. Most cases will turn out to be not much to worry about, so the sooner you get in, the sooner you can find out what’s going on and see what steps may be necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, my acupuncturist suggested that I try hyaluronic acid capsules for the arthritis in my hands, feet, back, neck and hips. I had heard of hyaluronic acid years ago and checked it out. Since it promotes cell growth, I assume it can’t differentiate from good cells or cancer cells, so I avoided trying it. Is this really safe to take? -- C.F. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is indicated for use via injection, especially into the knee for arthritis symptoms, but is also used for other purposes, such as a filler in cosmetic surgery. For knee injection, it appears safe and moderately effective. It isn’t thought to work by promoting cell growth but rather by replacing synovial fluid, a fluid that acts as a kind of shock absorber, protecting the cartilage, bone and nerves of the knee. There have been studies evaluating oral hyaluronic acid, and one from Japan in 2012 showed a very modest improvement compared with a placebo. I wouldn’t recommend oral hyaluronic acid based on the studies done so far. There are many reports in basic cancer research on the ability of cancer cells to grow in conditions of high hyaluronic acid; however, this does NOT mean that taking oral hyaluronic acid promotes growth of cancer cells. As far as I can tell, there is no evidence that links oral hyaluronic acid to increased cancer risk. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from constipation for years, and after consulting with a gastrointestinal specialist, I was prescribed MiraLAX. I take it every morning and have added fiber to my diet. The program has been successful. How wise is it to continue MiraLAX indefinitely? Should I worry about side effects? It has been quite pleasant to be free of constipation worries. -- Anon. ANSWER: MiraLAX is a non-absorbable chemical called polyethylene glycol. It passes through your system, bringing water with it, which makes stool less hard and easier to pass. It is very safe for short-term use. If used excessively, it can pull sodium and potassium out of a person’s system. If you are taking in enough fiber, it should be possible to decrease the MiraLAX without worrying about constipation again, but it’s OK to use MiraLAX as needed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Genetics may be the biggest culprit in undereye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one’s face - paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area - can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Moving Won't Solve Social Isolation Our experiences with the coronavirus have changed many of us. We've been locked down, scared to shop, startled at the number of people who refuse to wear a mask in public, and worse, we've been socially isolated. Now we want something new. My email confirms it: Many of us believe we want to live in a different place, one that will surely be better, and retirement communities are the top choice. We have various reasons for feeling this way. Many of us have been hit with serious lockdown depression and believe that it's from being so isolated. Maybe the grandchildren want us closer than the other end of a Zoom conference call, and we certainly can't fly there to visit. Maybe we want to live somewhere we perceive is safer. However, as enticing as that idea is, before packing up, be sure what's on the other end: Check the health stats in your new chosen location. No need to go from one area with a few cases of the virus into a major hotspot. In many places the numbers are just now starting to climb. Check the rules in the new location. Some areas are still locked down more than others. In some places a move doesn't qualify as essential travel.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. I just started a vegetable garden and a few of my lettuces are growing so tall that they started flowering. Should I take them out, cut them in half or leave them? Bolting lettuce - You have some choices here that you can make. Lettuce is one of the cool-season crops, not a good summer season crop. When the weather gets warm and the days get long, lettuce is inclined to bolt or “go to seed”. When this happens, the leaves get very bitter. You can cut them back to the ground, leaving the roots intact, and they should re-sprout when the weather cools a bit if they have

consistent moisture. You can donate the tops to someone who has rabbits, guinea pigs or chickens. They will eat them readily. You can let them go to seed and collect the seed for next year’s crop. This also helps pollinating insects as they visit the flowers for nectar and pollen. Leaving them there, if you have the room. can also serve to act as an insect trap crop to help protect other crops such as broccoli and cabbage. You can, of course, pull them up SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO OUR EXPERTS! Your question(s) will be answered directly and start over, but some of the other options, I think, are more fun. I would & may be featured in our column! not cut them in half. Ask them today at: GVPENNYSAVER.COM/GARDEN

Restorative Justice: Dialogue & Healing for Broken Communities By Amanda Dudek

S

ometimes, it seems as though conflict surrounds us. The issue of conflict within our communities, while necessarily addressed, is not solved through the criminal justice system. In fact, New York State’s recidivism rate has held steady around 40% since the 1990’s. Many are looking for a better way. The Ontario County Restorative Practices Collaborative believes restorative practices are a big part of the answer. Established just a year and a half ago, Ontario County Restorative Justice Collaborative (OCRJC) approaches conflict, tensions, and justice in a different way. This OCRJC consists of individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as professional mediators, law enforcement officials, educators, and very importantly, community volunteers. Their hope is to replace conflict with community peace and justice, unity, and healing. “We talk about seeing justice done in the broadest terms, more than simply punishing someone who has done something wrong,” explained Kim Reisch, OCRJC Coordinator, mediator and former attorney. “Restorative justice focuses on who has been affected and how as well as what needs to be done to address the harm done.” Each member brings a unique understanding of this process based on their expertise and line of work. “We really are a collaborative in a very real sense of the word,” said Reisch. “While staff members of the Center for Dispute Settlement, myself included, currently facilitate our group, we all work together to bring the principles of accountability, compassion, and repairing harm out into our communities.” What do these restorative processes look like? “Primarily, we promote dialogue using a circle format,” shared Reisch. These circles can have different purposes: to discuss a particular topic, to give those exiting a corrections facility reentry into their community, and to resolve conflict when harm has been done. “We bring together the person who did the harm and their support people, the person directly harmed and their support people, community members who have experienced harm at some level from these actions, along with facilitators,” said Reisch. Everyone gathers to answer three simple questions: What happened? Who has been affected and how? What needs to be done to repair the harm? “Restorative justice is sometimes thought of as a ‘soft’ process; it is not,” Reisch stated. “People must be willing Kim Reisch, and able to face the persons they have harmed and do what is necessary to Ontario County repair that damage, including anything Restorative Justice from taking steps to maintain sobriety Collaborative Coordinator to repairing vandalized property.” Repair is a key word in restoration practices, and not just repair of those harmed or of damaged property. “We have to understand that when harm happens, everyone feels shame and isolation,” explained Reisch. “The systems that are in place don’t address this aspect and, therefore, cannot work to repair it. These kinds of conversations create space for all kinds of harm to come out.” This process explores the roots of each incident, allowing for compassionate responses as a more complete understanding is reached. Far from being an easy out, this process creates no place to hide. “When you look those you have harmed in eye, it is very hard to claim victimhood,” shared Reisch. “For example, if you’ve committed breaking and entering, you may have to face a parent with a young child who now feels afraid because of what you have done. Rather than simply accepting an impersonal consequence, you are held accountable by the people you hurt.” The benefits of restorative practices cannot be overstated. “We live in a time when neighbors are often quick to call the authorities,” said Reisch. “Traditional retributive justice takes the humanity out of the situation. People are capable of so much more when we realize we are

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

a part of the community, see everyone’s humanity, and understand other people’s points-of-view.” “Human beings are wired to be in connection with each other, and if we do harm, it causes breaches in those relationships,” Reisch continued. “This process provides valuable insight into the perspectives of others. For example, I once participated in a restorative conference with a group of students who had gone joy riding in an ATV from a school. They thought nothing of it. A facilities person was so afraid that they were going to crash, be hurt and possibly killed. These young people never considered these adults would be afraid for their safety.” Reisch, the OCRPC and others believe a restorative justice world would be a better place. “I believe there would be a lot less violence,” state Reisch. “Repair would be offered before situations got out of hand. We are all connected as a community, and we need the whole community,” said Reisch. “Everyone’s hurt counts. Looking at the world this way can be really restorative, healing the breaches in our social contracts.” Recently awarded a grant for their work from the Canandaigua Walmart store, the group “welcomes anyone in the community to join the collaborative,” said Reisch. “The role of community members in restorative processes is crucial and has a real impact on people. We hope to educate community members, support practitioners, and provide accessible opportunities for community members to have equal say.” For more information, contact Kim Reisch at kreisch@cdsadr.org or 585-396-0840, or visit their Facebook page @ OntarioCountyRPC.

Hi! My name is Addie and I live in LeRoy. My nickname is now “Digger,” because I helped Tom McGinnis in our yard. He put down yards of dirt for our new lawn and I just couldn’t help but dig it back up! He even let me on his Cat shovel! We make a great team!

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Summer afternoon — summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. ~Henry James

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Roll scarves around cardboard tubes to store flat. You’ll skip the wrinkles and be able to find the scarf you want without much fuss. * On a home improvement kick? You’re not alone. Here’s a wallpapering tip from way back: If your wallpaper is applied with adhesive, add a few drops of food coloring to the paste. It will give it a slight tint that will not be visible when dried. Now you can be sure that the adhesive makes it all the way to the edge of the paper for best results! * “Ironing intricate sleeves or other difficult shapes can be made easier with the use of an oven mitt. Slip the mitt over your hand, put your hand on one side of a fabric to create a flat area to iron. Use care and go slowly, and you’ll get a good press.” -- E.R. in Missouri * Bright strips of tape can be a great safety addition to the edges of stairs. Even better is bright, textured, reflective tape for low-light areas, like basements or porch steps. The bright color makes the edges visible in daylight; the reflection does the same at night. A bit of texture makes sure they’re not slippery. * “Here’s a great sewing tip from my grandma: When you are attaching buttons, hooks, snaps, etc., tape them to the fabric with transparent tape. You can sew right through it, and it will help keep the item from slipping around while you get it secured.” -- A.J. in Pennsylvania * “Now that my baby is entering her messy eating phase, I cut up several burp cloths to make wipe up cloths for the high chair. They are soft enough for a full face wipe and sturdy enough to sop up baby food and go right in the washer.” -- P.W. in Texas

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Neighbor’s Dog Loves To Visit DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t own a dog, but I have a minor problem with one. My neighbor has a Staffordshire terrier named “Hazel.” Almost every day, Hazel is let out into the neighbor’s backyard, and she quickly escapes by jumping over the short gate at the side of the house. Then she walks into my yard to visit me as I work in the garden. Hazel is very nice, so I don’t feel threatened at all. I’ll give her a few pats and then lead her back over to her house. But I worry about her running around the neighborhood, off-leash and unsupervised. How should I approach my neighbor about her roaming? -- Greg in Albany, New York DEAR GREG: You’re right to be concerned. Hazel could be hit by a car; she could be attacked by another dog; or she could frighten other residents who might injure her. If police or animal control officers see her, she will likely be picked up and taken to the local pound. The next time Hazel comes over to visit, head next door and knock on your neighbor’s door. Talk to them calmly about raising the height of the gate so that she can’t leap over it. You’re a good neighbor to bring Hazel back each time, but ultimately it is the responsibility of her owner to make sure she stays in her yard. Remind your neighbor that having a dog off a leash can result in steep fines from the city or county. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.
