DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

Paving stones are used around the house in many different applications, including on walkways and patios. Sometimes, however, paving stones are beyond homeowners’ budgets. Fortunately, there’s another alternative that may look just as attractive and save homeowners money. Stamped concrete, also called textured or imprinted concrete, is a design element that replicates the look of stone, brick, wood, slate, or other materials in concrete. Stamped concrete can be used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete also may be incorporated into interior flooring designs. Homeowners can explore their options with regard to stamped concrete by speaking with a masonry expert or landscape architect.
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Smart watering conserves water and saves
money
Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

* Dunce caps used to be a sign of intelligence! Thirteenth-century philosopher John Duns Scotus believed that a pointed cap helped spread knowledge from the tip to the brain, and his followers proudly wore them as badges of honor. A few hundred years later, when his ideas became less popular, the meaning of the Duns cap was turned on its, er, head, becoming a joke that led to its less flattering association.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Debilitating Menstrual Pain Might Be Due to Endometriosis
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a woman who has had terrible experiences with menstruation. I’ve probably seen two dozen different gynecologists, and I complained to every one of them about my painful periods. Not even a painkiller was prescribed. Most of them seem to think that debilitating pain is part of being female. This pain is so bad that it is incapacitating. I’ve missed work and school because of it. I would throw up anything that I tried to eat or drink for a full day. It drives me nuts that everyone can empathize with a migraine headache, but no one has empathy for someone with menstrual cramps.
Once, I told the nurse practitioner that I had a really painful episode, and she asked, “Why didn’t you come into the office? You might have ruptured something.” Had I come into the office, it would have required an ambulance. By then, I had heard about endometriosis. I asked her if she thinks I have it, and she said, “Oooh, you probably do. You’d have to get laparoscopic surgery to know.”
Well, that would have been great to know 40 years ago. I could have gotten the surgery and spared myself years of agonizing pain. Did I explain myself incorrectly all those times when talking to my doctors? It’s too late for me (thankfully, I’m past all this), but please help us learn how to talk to our doctors in order to get through to them. These are not your garden-variety cramps that can be treated with Midol. -- S.N.
ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear of your experiences, and I’m glad you have written to try to help others avoid this outcome. While it is true that most women have discomfort during menstruation, some women experience a lot more than discomfort, and what you had is not typical at all for dysmenorrhea.
When a woman has pain that doesn’t respond to the first-line treatments, such as a heating pad and regular exercise, most primary care doctors, including gynecologists, consider pain medication as well as a trial of hormone treatment (such as combined oral contraceptives -- “birth control pills”). I’m honestly surprised you weren’t ever recommended these treatments, even though I have heard horrific stories of pelvic pain being ignored before.

If pain medication and hormone treatment are inadequate, it’s time for a primary care doctor like me to refer the patient to a specialist. The specialists I choose are gynecologists who have special expertise and training in pelvic pain. They consider multiple reasons for this persistent pain, including adenomyosis, fibroids and endometriosis. With endometriosis, there are lesions outside the uterus near the ovaries, pelvic ligaments, bladder, or the lining of the pelvic wall in the cul-de-sac (an anatomical structure in the pelvis). Just like the endometrial tissue in the uterus, these lesions outside the uterus react to hormone levels, and at the time of menstruation, they can typically cause pain or pressure, bowel or bladder issues, painful sex, fatigue, and other symptoms.
While I can’t be sure that you had endometriosis, it is the most likely diagnosis. The diagnosis is often supported by an ultrasound, not usually by surgery at first. Medical treatments for endometriosis (such as GnRH-analogue drugs or aromatase inhibitors) are generally preferred to surgery, but surgery is still necessary sometimes. I am concerned about your having seen two dozen gynecologists. One should have been enough to treat you with increasing levels of aggressiveness. I’d advise women in your situation to seek out a gynecologist with expertise in pelvic pain.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT
Adesiretoliveahealthy, activelife compels many people to include exercise in their daily routines. Numerous studies have shown that regular workouts that include a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise can make bodies less susceptible to injury while reducing a person’s risk for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Exercising is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine, but that routine can be derailed if men and women are not taking the appropriate measures to avoid injury while working out. While even professional athletes succumb to injury from time to time, there are steps everyone can take to avoid injury when working out.
DID YOU KNOW?
According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills up to half its users, annually killing roughly six million people each year. The WHO notes that more thanfivemillionofthosedeathsare the result of direct tobacco use, while more than 600,000 deaths can be attributed to non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke. While many in the United States may understand the threat that smoking poses to their overall health, theWHOnotesthatstudies indicate knowledge about the specifichealthrisksoftobaccouse is not widespread. A 2009 survey ofsmokersinChinafoundthatless than 40 percent of smokers knew that smoking tobacco causes coronary heart disease, while only 27 percent were aware of the link between smoking and stroke. It’s also important that smokers recognize that cigarettes once characterized as “light” or “low tar” are not healthier than more traditional cigarettes. While the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of such terms incigarettesaleswithintheUnited States, smokers traveling or living overseas should be mindful that other countries may not operate under such restrictions. In addition, the American Cancer Society notes that there is no proof that cigarettes sold as “all natural” and marketed as having no chemicals or additives are any safer than traditional cigarettes and that the best way for men, women and children to avoid the dangers of tobacco is to never smoke or to quit immediately.

Place signs around your neighborhood. Be aware that there are ordinances that govern where signage can be located. Check with your town’s municipal office to determine if you need any permits for your signs or the yard sale itself. Make sure signs are legible for drivers and pedestrians alike.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE
Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus.
Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leadingtomillionsofdollars exchanging hands.

Thank You to All!
Thank you to all! I did not have time to obtain all of your names at the time, but I wanted to thank the gentlemen who so kindly helped push my very dead Buick wagon off Rte. 31F and into the parking lot of the LNB Bank on Sunday a couple of weeks ago. I was making a left hand turn into the Tom Wahl’s parking lot from the turning lane that I was in when all of a sudden the car stopped dead in its tracks. I tried to restart the motor with no luck! So I had no power (no brakes, no power-steering, no nothing) with which to make the turn! A quick prayer to the Lord and suddenly out of nowhere 2 fellows appeared at my side windows and wanted to help. One grabbed my steering wheel, another ran to the rear and began pushing on the tail of the car (with other men already in place) and before I knew it I was in the parking lot. What could have been a nasty accident turned out for the better with no injuries to account for. I was soon able to get my wagon fixed and running again.
I am sorry this is so late, but I was so very thankful for the help of these good Samaritans!

For Handicap
VENT
Why does our local “big box” store allow teenagers to cruise around the store on the electric carts that are for handicapped? There were two “kids” maybe 15 or 16 going up and down all the isles with nothing in their baskets. Before anyone says, “maybe they were handicapped and it doesn’t show,” they come over from another shopping center walking and running. When someone would look at them they got loud, laughed at them and basically dared them to say something. Where was Security? Are they afraid to chase them off and out? I wouldn’t have been surprised if there was a physical confrontation between a customer and one of them. Trying to contact the store manager was an absolute waste of time.
Shop Lifting and Stealing in our communities
I live in a small town and our [local store] had to shut down the self check out because people were dishonest and not paying for the items they checked out. This problem extends to our large stores in [local town], example [local store], and other business. When we let the low lifes and criminals get away the the crimes, they affect the business, the workers, and the community. I for one would like to see armed guards at the exit doors outside of the business and when they suspect someone is stealing an item, confront them out side the store and if they have taken an item without paying put them in handcuffs and make them stand outside the store for public display. What I really want to say is against the law. We as a society cannot overlook the crimes to make our country better; we need to stand up and say this is wrong.
CRANE’S AUTOMOTIVE
Prevent summer sun and heat damage to your car Wax more often. Try to wax your car after every wash. A good layer of wax can protect a vehicle’s paint from dirt, debris and the sun’s rays. Remember, premium waxes do not necessarily work any better than less expensive waxes, but the type of formulation (liquid, paste andspray)mayaffectapplication and how long each application lasts. Consumer Reports found that paste waxes are easier to use than liquid waxes, though liquid waxes cleaned the best. Spray waxes were the easiest to use and left the fewest stains on plastic parts, but they didn’t last as long as other waxes.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
4 toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.
Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

PAW’S CORNER

Traveling with a pet. Car Edition.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re taking a road trip across the country and bringing our dog “Frankie” with us. He’s about 6 years old and well trained, but has never been beyond the front yard. How can we keep him comfortable on our journey? -- Linda P. in Trenton, New Jersey
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com

Or, Mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DEAR LINDA: A road trip sounds like fun! And the key to your dog having a great time is to plan, plan, plan.
First, make sure that Frankie’s vaccinations are up to date and that his license tag and identifying information are securely attached to his collar. It’s not a bad idea to microchip your dog, too -- in case he runs off and his collar gets detached. Carry a copy of his vet records with you, too. Next, start planning the road trip with Frankie in mind.
-- Plan rest breaks and build them into your travel time. Check along the route that you’ll be traveling for pet-friendly rest areas where you can walk dogs (on leash) during stretch breaks. You’ll want to stop every two to three hours.
-- Look for pet-friendly accommodations along the route. If you’re camping, check the campsite rules -- not all of them allow pets!
-- Pack a bag just for Frankie that has his medications, food (especially if he eats specialty pet food), favorite toys, extra blanket and extra leash.
-- Make sure Frankie is safe and secure in the car. Bigger dogs do better in a kennel cage set up in the back of your SUV or the folded-down back seat, with a padded bed to lie down on.
-- If Frankie suffers from anxiety or tends to get sick in the car, talk to the vet about medication to ease his symptoms.

Small but Mighty! Irondequoit-based Pet Rescue Serves Rochester Community for 20 Years
BY CAROLYN LAUBER AND SUZIE WELLS
Located in the heart of the Irondequoit community is Pet Adoption Network (PAN), a place where compassion meets dedicationandwherethelivesofhomelesscatsaretransformed through love and commitment. PAN is a bit of a hidden gem, quietly but steadfastly making a profound impact for more than 20 years on the lives of cats and kittens in need and the families who have welcomed them into their hearts.
PAN operates with a mission that resonates far beyond its modest appearance. Founded in 2003 on the belief that every pet deserves a second chance, PAN – an all-volunteer-led, no-kill, 501c3 organization – has become a beacon of hope for cats in dire circumstances. rough their unwavering diligence, PAN strives to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome cats, ensuring they find new, safe accommodations where they can thrive.
“We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings,” shares Kate Sullivan, president and co-founder of PAN. “We pour our hearts into the work that we do. To date, we’ve placed nearly 3,300 cats in loving homes, all due to our supporters and the hard work of our team of volunteers who devote their time and talents. Together, we’re making a difference.”
Sullivan says Rochester’s stray and feral cat population exploded especially since shelters had to close during COVID. She says, “it’s disheartening” that so many cats are mistreated or neglected, and they’ve been working hard to make a dent in that population. Each rescued and adopted feline is a step in the right direction. “ ey don’t ask to live like that,” Sullivan says.
PAN’s undertaking begins with rescue efforts that span the Greater Rochester region. e group works tirelessly to save disadvantaged cats; many are found abandoned on the streets, in unsuitable residences, and/or with physical mistreatment. At times, cats are removed from shelters where overcrowding and limited resources threaten their well-being.
PAN also partners with other local groups to provide emergency intake and assists with some trap-and-release services for feral cat colonies. O en taking in cats with medical needs or behavioral challenges, PAN seeks to heal both physical wounds and emotional scars by procuring the necessary veterinary care and rehabilitation to prepare them for their forever homes.
Central to PAN’s mission is its resolution to match cats with compatible families. Unlike some larger organizations, PAN takes an individualized approach, ensuring that each adoption is a perfect fit for both the pet and the person.
Jay Bachmann, PAN’s volunteer coordinator and board member since 2016 and recently appointed Vice President, affirms the importance of this strategy. “ e personal touch in our process is designed to reassure you that you’re making the right choice and to give you the confidence that your new cat or kitten will be a perfect match for your family.”
Bachmann says, “I have always loved animals, with a special spot in my heart for cats. Volunteering with PAN allows me to help directly improve the lives of animals in our community. My favorite moment with PAN was in 2020 when my wife and I adopted two cats from PAN who have become treasured members of our family.”
Sullivan remembers a cat rescued from the back of a packed garage in a terrible part of the city. e cat’s ears were frost-bitten, she was so dirty and terrified, but within a few weeks at Sullivan’s own home, the cat was back to health and melted into her household, acting like she’d been there her whole life. She was already 12 years old, but she slept on Sullivan’s bed for the rest of her life.
My favorite memory with PAN was when they placed their 3,000th cat, aptly named Jubilee. She was super sweet, and this was a giant milestone for PAN and a cause for celebration, a very proud moment for all of us and proof that we were making a difference.
Sullivan adamantly implores, “Please spay and neuter your pets, and please consider opening your heart and home to another pet to help alleviate the stray/feral population around the city.”
Whether you’re looking to acquire a new furry friend, foster, volunteer, donate, or simply spread the word, there are many ways to support PAN’s mission. By choosing to adopt from PAN, you gain a loyal companion and contribute to their ongoing endeavors. Volunteers are crucial to providing temporary foster homes, assisting with events, or lending professional skills such as photography or veterinary care. Donations of money, supplies, or your time are invaluable in helping PAN continue to save lives. Visit www.petadoptionnetwork.org to learn more.

Every civilization has had its version of soccer. People in ancient China played a type of soccer known as ‘cuju’ using a ball made of leather and feathers. Cuju later spread to Japan, where it was known as ‘kemari.’ Similarly, the Aztecs played a ritualistic game called ‘ollama,’ in which the ball was considered a symbol of the sun, and the captain of the losing team was sometimes sacrificed to the gods. Later, the Mesoamericans used rubber balls — which were absent in other cultures — to play a similar game.
SOCCER Day
In 1863, the first football association was formed in London. The association standardized and established the first version of soccer rules. They also banned the use of hands in the game and created standards for the size and weight of the ball used in the game. The new set of rules and standards divided the game into two classes: football and rugby.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* In 2005, a Powerball drawing had a stunning 110 second-place winners, all of whom attributed their luck to ... a fortune cookie. No foul play was involved, just a Chinese fortune cookie distribution factory named Wonton Food, which happened to correctly foretell five of the six winning numbers. Each grateful recipient took home between $100,000 and $500,000.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE
Economics: The effects of climate change on crops and livestock may force farmers to change the nature of their farms. The UCS notes that farmers may be forced to choose crop varieties and animal breeds that are suited to the new conditions sparked by climate change. Going in a new direction could force farmers to make potentially costly investments in machinery and other changes as they make the transition.

Put a healthy spin on an old family favorite
Meatloaf is a dinnertime staple for many families. A favorite of adults and children alike, meatloaf can be prepared however cooks see fit, making it a versatile dish for family dinners. Parents who want to enjoy meatloaf with their families and do so while promoting healthy diets can try the following recipe for “Turkey, Vegetable & Oat MiniMeatloaves with Marinara Sauce” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds).
Turkey, Vegetable & Oat
Mini-Meatloaves with Marinara Sauce
Serves 6
Expeller-pressed canola oil spray
1 8-ounce package crimini (baby bella) mushrooms (about 21/2 cups)
1 small yellow onion, cut into eighths
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon extra-virgin oil
1 cup dry rolled oats
2 large eggs
1 pound lean ground turkey (or beef or bison) 13/4 cups pasta sauce, divided
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Italian herb seasoning
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Preheat oven to 375 F. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or 6 mini loaf pans with spray. Pulse mushrooms in a food processor until finely chopped and add them to a large bowl. Repeat with onion and garlic.
Place a large frying pan over medium heat and add oil. When oil is shimmering, add vegetables and sauté for 7 minutes or until water releases and evaporates completely, lowering the heat as necessary. Set aside.
Process the oats until they are of a fine consistency. Whisk the eggs in the bowl used for the vegetables. Add processed oats, turkey, 3/4 cup of pasta sauce, cooked vegetables, vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and stir together with a fork until blended.
Scoop the mixture into 6 mounds on the pan or into each mini-loaf pan, about 3/4 cup each. Shape each mound into a 4 x 2-inch loaf. Spread remaining 1 cup of pasta sauce on top of the loaves, distributing evenly. Bake on middle rack for 25 minutes, turning pan midway through cooking, until loaves are firm or a thermometer inserted in the middle reads at least 165 F. Allow loaves to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Recipe Notes: You can finely chop vegetables with a knife rather than using a food processor if you prefer. Whole oats can be added to the meat mixture for a more rustic texture.
