* New Yorkers went through a bizarre phase of wearing chameleons as living ornaments in 1894. They were fastened to cushions, scarves and women’s bodices with tiny chains and collars as little “jeweled playthings,” but thankfully the trend was shut down by the SPCA, which banned their sale -- though not until over 10,000 of the creatures were already running loose in the city.

HOW TO PREP YOUR YARD FOR SUMMER PARTIES
HANDYMEN/WOMEN
Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear.

FAST-GROWING VEGETABLES Arugula: Some people call arugula “rocket” because of just how quickly it grows. The green has been growing in popularity as a salad starter or vegetable side dish. Simply cut the leaves when they are large enough and as needed for recipes. Other fast-growing greens include kale, chard mustard greens and watercress.

STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Install ceiling fans. Cool people in a given room by installing ceiling fans in areas of the home that might be warm but not too hot during the summertime. Modern ceiling fans with the ENERGY STAR® logo can be as much as 75 percent more efficient than older models, and ceiling fans typically consume far less energy than air conditioners. Install fans that can rotate forward and in reverse, as the direction the fan is rotating can actually heat or cool a room. Consult the owner’s manual to determine which direction fans should be rotating in on hot and cold days.

While drivers are protecting their cars, they should also protect themselves, passengers and pets. Never leave a person or animal unattended in a hot car, even for a short time.
GAS IN A CAR WON’T STAY FRESH FOREVER Can gas go bad? Yes it can, the lighter, more volatile components of gasoline evaporate over time. Old gas can compromise engine performance, potentially causing a car to hesitate or stall. Gas that has gone bad can begin to smell like varnish. To determine if gas smells differently, drivers should remove the gas cap and stand next to the car where you would normally put the gas pump. If you detect an aroma of varnish, then the gas has likely gone bad. Gas can begin to go bad in as little as three months, so drivers who haven’t driven much over that period may have bad gas in their tanks. One way drivers can combat bad gas, even if they aren’t driving much, is to add fuel stabilizer when filling up the tank. Fuel stabilizer keeps gas from degrading, but it’s only effective if it is mixed with good gasoline, hence the reason to add it when filling up and not when you detect the gas already in the car has gone bad.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
We’ve Gotten Careless If you read the news, you know there are serious questions about how well the vaccines we’re been taking actually protect against COVID. Especially worrisome is the protection they offer against the Delta variant that’s sweeping the world. Those in authority seem to be flipping a coin each day, depending on who you listen to. Some days we can throw caution to the wind and go about our business, and other days we need to continue to beware. There’s talk of going back to the indoor mask mandates, and that’s likely one step away from again limiting the number of people allowed in stores at one time, or so I imagine. If those things happen, it won’t be like it was in March 2020. Back then we were all scared to death. We’d spread out in the grocery aisles, staying far away from other people. We wore that mask at all times when out and about, and we respected all those 6-foot markers on the floor. We certainly didn’t sit down at a restaurant table for four and take off our masks, or head to the gym. Now, having lived through that whole horrible year, people are tired of it all, and we’re eager for a normal life. We think that because so many people have had the vaccination, that surely we’ll be safe. I fear that this time, however, if the mask mandates come again, it will be even more dangerous than it was last year, because we’ve gotten too casual, careless and passive about our safety. My short to-do list involves buying new masks and more hand sanitizer, renewing my grocery curbside pickup account ... and saying no to an invitation to join a dance group. How about you? Are you ready for what’s likely coming? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Rubbing alcohol can be used to remove ballpoint-pen ink from most upholstery. * “Polish wall tiles in the bathroom using car wax. They will repel water really well. Just be sure that you cover the floor before you apply any wax. You do not want to polish your tub, as that is a safety hazard for sure!” -- M.W. in Missouri * If you have wood floors, you might already know about felt furniture pads -- the little self-stick felt circles you put on furniture legs to reduce scratches on your floors. You might not know that these same pads can reduce scuff marks that appliances make on countertops. It also makes it easier to scoot around a heavy mixer or other appliances. * “Check your mower to see if you’re cutting your lawn to the optimum height. Generally, cutting grass to 2 1/2 inches will allow it to retain more moisture, requiring less watering, and help shade out weeds, too.” -- O.F. in Alabama * Here’s a workout tip: Rotate among a few pairs of running shoes to get the best life out of them. Rotating gives them a chance to dry out between wearings, and runners who practice this routine have a 39% lower chance of injury, according to a Luxembourg research firm. * “If you’re looking to save money, don’t ignore the dollar store. You can find a lot of personal-care and home-care items there for, well, a dollar. I save quite a bit of money this way.” -- R.L. in Texas

Mary Cariola Students Participate in 4-H Public Presentations BY SUSAN COYLE
4
-H Public Presentations are held each year to encourage youth to develop their communication skills. The program supports youth to create a presentation and develop the skills needed to deliver it to an audience. With public speaking known as one of the biggest fears that people have, it is easy to appreciate that this is a challenging and important project for youth to complete. For a group of youth at Mary Cariola Center, this challenge is magnified as the students are non-verbal and non-ambulatory. However, these youth, and their supporters, meet the challenge head on and succeed! Sean, Maddie, DeAshaney, and Shamell are hard workers and brave to try out and improve an important skill! A cornerstone of 4-H is to create experiences that all youth can participate in. According to author, Liz Fosslien, “Diversity is having a seat at the table. Inclusion is having a voice. Belonging is having that voice be heard.” Tricia Coleman, Speech Language Pathologist, embraced that quote and set out to make public presentations possible for these students. Access to technology, on-going educational and therapeutic support, motivation and dedication made 4-H Public Presentations a reality for the 4-H Busy Bees. The evolution and adaptation of technology has made communication increasingly more accessible for students with disabilities. All four youth utilize a speech generating device, which involves dynamic technological equipment programmed with communication software to allow access to voice output communication. Each system is accessed differently and all programs are customized to meet the needs of each individual. Moving from the technological aspects of Public Presentations, the youth explored Dream Boards for 2021. The youth organized their thoughts and answered questions on their dream boards that included “What do I want to learn more about?”, “What do I like to do with my friends and family?”, “What do I want to accomplish this year?”, “What will keep my mind and body healthy?”, and “Where do I want to go?”. Based on the ideas that were gathered, each student created a visual dream board and presented them to both a live as well as a virtual audience for the annual 4-H Public Presentations event. Two of the youth shared in their planning that they dreamed to be in a fashion show and a live concert. A week before the presentation, music and speech therapists collaborated to make those dreams come true. Music Therapist, Jason Willey, was at the ready to support the musical part of the youths’ dreams. As the students collaborated to plan their event, entitled “Melodies and Accessories” they used their speech generating devices to select music that would be performed and how each song would be presented. They also co-wrote and recorded an original song to premiere at the event. After they wrote the lyrics to this song, one of the students composed the primary melodic hook on an electric keyboard, and the other student added her own vocal stylings. The event featured modeling accessories and the debut of “Dream It-Be It,” the original song composition that

highlighted the fact that we can all achieve our dreams just as we are Joanne Fisher, Mary Cariola Center Communications Specialist, shares that every Cariola student has goals. The team of educators and clinicians work together to support students to achieve those goals. Using purposeful work, fun, and encouragement, the Mary Cariola Center celebrates all successes as the Center works to transform the lives of individuals with disabilities. Kathy Lee, classroom teacher and leader of the Busy Bees 4-H Club, shared how much it means to the youth and their families to be able to participate in the 4-H Public Presentations Program. The youth were thrilled with the certificates they earned and loved the 4-H goodie bags they received. Parents loved the bragging rights to share their childrens’ success in the public presentations and amazing fashion show. The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth ages 5 to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. In return, youth who participate in 4-H find a supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on or “experiential” learning about things that interest them. ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dog’s Begging Spirals Out of Control DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our dog “Boadicea” is a sweetheart, but when she wants a treat she turns into a little monster. She drools on my arm, chews on my roommate’s shoe (with his foot in it), barks loudly, yips ... whatever it takes. We eventually break down and give her a treat. This happens several times a day. How can we stop this behavior? -- Darren in Manchester, New Hampshire
Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.
DEAR DARREN: There are two steps I’d recommend to curb this behavior, because you know the downside of Boadicea’s begging: spiraling behavioral problems, future digestive issues and potential obesity. First, reinforce her basic obedience training. Work with her at least once a day on the “sit,” “stay,” “lie down,” “leave it” and “come here” commands. I recommend not working with her during the time that you’re normally relaxing in the living room with your roommate, because you want to try to reinforce that certain places and times are for training, play or treats. Obedience training alone won’t resolve the problem, though, because she’s developed a habit of begging whenever you’re trying to relax or socialize. So, you’ll need to employ the “ignore and divert” strategy as well. Ignore her attention-seeking behavior for a specific amount of time ... say, five minutes. Next, command her to either sit or lie down, and give her a chew toy. When she inevitably gets up to beg again, repeat the process. Don’t give her a treat at all. This will take time, but eventually she will get it. Many dog owners add a structured treat time to the day. For example, after your dinner and dishes are done, she can have her treat. This will help reinforce when and where she gets treats, and how she is supposed to behave. Send your tips, questions and comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Non-Stop Acid Reflux? Look at Surgical Options
Reclaim your ability to enjoy every moment with the latest hearing aid technology.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 78-year-old female who has suffered from acid reflux for many years and has been taking Prilosec (omeprazole) for at least 15 years. I have heard that it is not meant for longtime use. If I don’t take it, I have such heartburn I can’t sleep and am in misery all day and night. I recently attended a seminar on the new LINX surgery and hope to have it done. Do you have any information on the success of or problems after this surgery? -- J.B. ANSWER: The LINX device is a magnetic ring, placed by laparoscopic surgery, that helps increase the strength of the lower esophageal sphincter, the valvelike muscular structure at the junction of the esophagus and the stomach. This reduces reflux (backward movement) of stomach acid up into the esophagus. The procedure was very effective at reducing both heartburn symptoms (89% before procedure to 12% after) and the need for daily medicines like omeprazole (100% before to 15% after). The device has not been in use for a very long time, so long-term safety data is unavailable. Some people had to have the devices removed because they eroded into the esophagus, but only 0.3% of devices were removed at four years. There are other types of surgeries used to treat reflux, most of which are effective at reducing both symptoms and the need for medication. There are now options for treatment being done endoscopically (with an instrument placed through the mouth), without the need even for laparoscopic surgery (with the instrument being placed by small incisions through the skin). My personal practice is to discuss medication treatments as well as surgical treatments for people with moderate to severe acid reflux. Surgery in younger people may have more benefit by preventing a lifetime of daily medication. People who do not get relief with medication are those who most clearly benefit from these kinds of procedures. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION: 7 SURPRISING AND INSPIRING THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW (NAPSI)—For people on the transplant waiting list, returning to health is a real and remarkable possibility. In fact, more than 90 Americans get another chance at life every day thanks to organ donors. How many of these inspiring facts about donation and transplantation in the U.S. do you know? 1. Transplants literally keep people alive. In 2016, doctors gave former NFL quarterback and head coach Sam Wyche just days to live. Then, the same day Sam said his goodbyes, he received a new heart from a donor and a second chance at life. After the surgery, Sam said he “felt 20, 30 years younger” and he’s now back to biking, riding horses, and traveling to see his grandkids’ football games. 2. One person can give many life-changing gifts. People can donate organs (heart, liver, pancreas, intestine, two lungs and two kidneys) plus tissues (corneas, skin, heart valves, and other parts). Altogether, one donor can save up to eight lives and improve over 50 more. It’s incredible how one “yes” can change so many lives. 3. You can register online in minutes. You can visit organdonor.gov to sign up on your state registry as an organ, eye, and tissue donor. It’s wonderfully fast and easy to make a difference. 4. You can donate at any age. You might think that when organs turn 60 or 70, they’re ready to retire. Nothing could be further from the truth! A 93-year-old liver donor from Texas once saved the life of a 69-year-old teacher; and in 2017, one of every three donors was over 50. 5. Transplants grow with young recipients. Organs transplanted into children can grow and function into their adulthood and beyond. These gifts can last a lifetime. 6. A little goes a long way with livers. When transplanted, a segment of a donor’s liver will grow within a recipient until it achieves the functional capacity of a whole liver. 7. Recent innovations mean more possibilities. Vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) like face and hand transplants involve multiple kinds of tissue, and they’re giving hope to service members wounded in combat, people injured in other traumatic situations, and those born with missing limbs or severe disfigurements. Registering as an organ donor does not provide authorization for VCA donation. Your family must provide that authorization at the time of your death. Learn more at organdonor.gov/vca. Discover more about the surprising and inspiring world of transplantation and sign up to save lives at www.organdonor.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.

The Gospel Corner An Eternal Record!
Richard E. Philipson, Sr August 16, 2021 Bloomfield: Richard E. Philipson, Sr., was born on August 27, 1933 and passed away peacefully on August 16, 2021. He was born in Rochester, NY, and grew up in and around Detroit, Michigan. He is predeceased by his mother, Alma V. Philipson (Cox) of Rochester, NY, and his loving aunt, Doris Philipson Flieger of Ionia, NY, Margaret Schneider Philipson of Middlesex, NY, and by his beloved daughter, Chrisann Philipson (Richard Lentz) of Bristol, NY. He is survived by Michael A. Philipson of Rochester, NY, Thomas W. Philipson of Pittsford, NY, Judith Philipson Green (Scott) of Honeoye, NY and Richard E. Philipson, Jr. (Andrea) of Lyons, NY. He is also survived by grandchildren, Meagan Philipson Johnson (Toby), Brittany Philipson Kuka (Nick), Liam Philipson, and by great-granddaughter, Ava Philipson, and great-grandson, Kyran Kuka. Richard was an avid musician. At an early age he learned to play – by ear – both the piano and the accordion. He often entertained friends and family in Dearborn, Michigan where he graduated from Dearborn High School. He enlisted in the Air Force and was deployed to Landsberg, Germany, as an officer in the Air Military Police. On returning to the States, he settled in Rochester, New York, where he met and married Patricia Ann Russo. They subsequently had four children together and moved from Rochester to settle in Ionia, NY.
Man is incessantly compiling records. He is keeping track of everything from auto thefts to the latest sports statistics. Although man is keeping volumes of records, the greatest record is found in 1 John 5:11-12. This record has never been topped by anyone and never will be. This record stood the test of time being recorded almost 2,000 years ago. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” What a fantastic thing, that God would give to anyone that wants it freely, eternal life. The Bible, the King James Version for the English speaking people, has always had the best record and always will. Will you take heed of this record more than that of mere men? Jesus waits for you to recognize Him as the best record holder and crown Him Lord of All.

Richard eventually moved to Canandaigua, NY, where he welcomed another son. His life took him abroad to St. Thomas, USVI, where he worked for 12 years as an independent roofing and painting contractor and became pastor of Victory Christian Center Church (Pentecostal). He returned stateside and settled in Middlesex, NY, with Margaret Philipson. After her death, he moved to the Bloomfield, NY area and finally to MM Ewing (The Meadows) at Thompson Hospital (URMC). There will be a graveside service for family and callers on Friday, August 20th at 11:00am at Millers Corners Cemetery, County Rd.14, Ionia, NY, across from the Ionia firehouse. Condolences can be addressed to Judith Green, PO Box 162, Honeoye, NY 14471. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Open Door Mission, Rochester, NY in his name. Amazing Staff at Batavia’s Perry Pet I am overdue in thanking the amazing staff at Perry Pet in Batavia. We went through an incredibly difficult time this past April when we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl. Our dog was almost 17 years old and a huge part of our family. The staff at Perry Pet were kind, helpful, considerate, and so supportive during this time. Because of their kindness, we were able to have our whole family together one last time. I can’t tell you how much this meant to us. We cannot thank you enough for helping us through one of the most difficult times our family has gone through and for treating our girl with grace and dignity. The beautiful card and the touching memento that were sent to us afterwards were such an amazing surprise. Now we have her paw prints framed and a touching reminder of our sweet girl. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Credit where it’s due I’d like to thank Alexander Central School, its administrators, teachers, and the school board at the time for getting me involved at a young and impressionable age. I learned a lot.

Mind your own business To the person who put a face mask on, entered the fitness room, and tried to belittle me and make fun of the fact that I wear a mask.(You never wear a mask.) I am vaccinated, but I still wear one to protect myself and others, unike you. Then, you ask me what I’m doing on the treadmill and tell me that I should be outside walking. You then replied that you walk 4 miles a day outside. So what? Who are you to judge me? Who are you to know why I have to use a treadmill? I guess you don’t know I have titanium in three different parts of my body (rods, plates and cadaver bone). I’ve had two surgeries on my spine and a botched foot surgery. Stay in your lane, buddy, and mind your own business! A sad week for our country! After 20 years our time in Afghanistan has ended. After great cost in terms of human life and money spent the people that supported us there have been left in many cases high and dry. It might have always ended like this but it’s still a shame that things came to a close the way they did. Nonetheless thanks to all the vets that served there overseas. To those that are unvaccinated. In case you haven’t heard, hospitals are overrun with Covid patients, children are struggling to breathe (they don’t have the choice to get vaccinated) and thousands of people are dying. All because you “know your rights” and want the government to butt out. How many of you refused your stimulus check? Your unemployment? Your Social Security? It’s time to start thinking about someone other than yourself. It’s not too late to do the responsible thing and get vaccinated.

EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS “What separated me from the masses was ‘connecting’ with a faculty member. I didn’t even know what the possibilities were until he laid out a ‘roadmap’ and showed me a few shortcuts to get there. When my confidence was shaky, he reminded me that I could do it.” - Graduate, University of Michigan.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Aug. 24, 1875, Capt. Matthew Webb of Great Britain becomes the first person to successfully swim the English Channel without assistance. Webb reached shore in 21 hours and 45 minutes. In 1883, Webb attempted to swim the Niagara River and drowned in 10 minutes. * On Aug. 25, 1950, in anticipation of a strike by railroad workers, President Harry Truman issues an executive order putting America’s railroads under the control of the U.S. Army, saying it was necessary for the protection of American citizens as well as “essential to the national defense and security of the Nation.” He used the same justification for seizing control of steel plants. * On Aug. 26, 1974, Charles Lindbergh, the first man to accomplish a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, dies in Hawaii at age 72. To reduce weight during his famous 1927 flight, everything not essential was left out: radio, gas gauge, night-flying lights, navigation equipment and parachute. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.
