LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.
KEEP CRITTERS OUT OF YOUR HOUSE
Human beings are not the only creatures looking for warm and cozy spots to ride out autumn and winter. Very often wild animals see homes as the perfect spots to nest and survive the cold. Fall is a great time to inspect your home top to bottom and make sure there are no points of entry for unwanted guests. The Humane Society notes that deteriorated trim and fascia boards can make great entry points for animals like squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and possums. Other animals may bed down under porches or decks or even inside chimneys. Seal any holes or repair points that are penetrable by cold animals. Just be sure to inspect the home prior to sealing or capping any potential entry points to be certain there aren’t any animals already living inside. Otherwise you can trap unwanted animals in your home. Test possible entry points by sealing them loosely with a paper towel or insulation and see if the material gets pushed out.

HOW your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

It’s hard to know what information to trust these days, but one source I’ve always trusted is Consumer Reports. When not testing the items they review, they go straight to good, solid sources for information. Search consumerreports.org for “Strength Training Tips to Live Longer and Better.”

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111 Page13 EASTWAY EDITION ● FRIDAY,SEPTEMBER 2,2022 This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Strength training is one of the best things we can do for ourselves to maintain strong bones, increase muscle strength and improve mobility, balance and coordination. ose things in turn reduce our risk of falling and help maintain our independence. Many of us, however, don’t know where and how to start. e Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with Tu s University, has a free 126-page book titled “Growing Stronger: Strength Training for Older Adults” (www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/downloads/growing_stronger.pdf). If you can’t download the book, call the CDC at 800-232-4636, and it can be mailed to you. Start using the book (either reading it online or having it sent to you) by completing the test to see if you need to run the program by your doctor, especially if you’ve had any surgeries for your knee or hip. Your second step should be to read the section on getting motivated, because yes, some of us need coaxing to start exercising.
Build Muscles With Strength Training
For an additional source of help, consider investing in two sessions with an exercise coach who specializes in seniors. ings they’ll be able to teach you include how to do each exercise and how to use hand weights without straining joints. At the second session you’ll be able to ask any question that came up and verify that you’re still doing the movements correctly.
And while you’re looking around the Consumer Reports website, consider signing up for their weekly email newsletters. ey’re free, and you can chose between cars, health, home, smart buying, money, food and more.
For additional information on senior exercise from the CDC, take a look at www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/older_adults/index.htm.
REASONS TO SHOP
FARMERS’ MARKETS Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable. 30 North Union St., Rochester, NY 14607

Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay enginecoolinthesummerevenwhentheshutsoff.

My family and I love going to the summer concerts in the park. For safety reasons, most of the villages do not allow dogs, but when we go to [certain] evening concerts, there are always people who have to bring their dogs. Last week, there were a couple of dogs that were barking and snarling at each other. This frightened my children enough that they wanted to go home. Then, every time a dog would walk by, other dogs would set them off all over again. This is very annoying. Please, people, leave your pets at home so others can enjoy the concerts. In America To the rant titled "Private Property: indeed." It is nice that in Scotland, there is mutual respect of property. However, we live in America where there is not mutual respect of property. I support the original rant. The family should've asked for permission. How hard is it to ask a simple question? If anyone in the family had been injured while on that person's property, they would not have hesitated to sue the landowner. In America, we don't respect each other, our laws, or our government. "Personal boundaries" have not become ridiculous in this country. What is ridiculous is your lack of respect. If you like the way they do things in Scotland, please consider relocating there.

Blue-green Algae Is a Potentially Deadly Risk for Pets DEAR PAW’S corner: A couple of weeks ago, my family took a trip to a nearby pond. Our dog Jessup splashed and played along with us. On the drive home, Jessup began to look ill and started drooling. When we reached home he got very ill and started having seizures. I rushed him to the emergency vet, where they treated him. e vet said that he may have ingested blue-green algae, and that it is very common in ponds and still water at this time of year. Please let your readers know about this risk! Jessup is recovering and will probably be OK, but the vet said this can be fatal.

One such event that has continued through the years is St. Mary’s Summer Festival in Canandaigua. is year, the festival returned to celebrate its 50th anniversary. e St. Mary’s Summer Festival started about 50 years ago with a committee from the local Canandaigua Parish. “It was very small,” shared festival coordinator, Valerie Haynes. “ e games were held in what was considered a garage on the convent. en, it kept growing!” One of the most anticipated parts of the festivities—the garage sale—has also grown. “Our garage sale was just a couple of tables,” said Haynes. “It has now grown to ll a huge tent, and it raises quite a bit of funding.”

Different Drinking Water is Not the Cause of Diarrhea While Traveling
SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE
The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.
When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.
Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111 Page26 EASTWAY EDITION ● FRIDAY,SEPTEMBER 2,2022 TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Some people develop diarrhea with stress. Other people are more likely to drink alcohol while traveling, and excess alcohol can cause diarrhea. I can’t explain why drinking bottled or distilled water seems to prevent the problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to All©ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.2022NorthAmericaSynd.,Inc.RightsReserved
DEAR DR. ROACH: While reading one of your recent columns, I learned that all water, except for distilled, contains electrolytes. I wondered if there are differences in the amount of each electrolyte in drinking water in different places in Canada, and if so, whether that might explain why I experience cramping and diarrhea while visiting another place? Through experience, I have been able to avoid the problem by drinking only bottled mineral or distilled water when I am away from my home. In cases where I have been on lengthier holidays, after I lived through the initial distress, eventually, my gastric system calmed down and seemed to accommodate the new source of water. I felt that my malady might be some sort of domestic version of Montezuma’s Revenge, but the analogy is inapt because the water I have consumed away from my home was not contaminated. -- M.T. ANSWER: “Montezuma’s Revenge” is an (insulting) term for traveler’s diarrhea, specifically in reference to Mexico, where drinking water may be contaminated with bacteria. I don’t think the answer to your diarrhea while traveling is in the water. The quality of drinking water in nearly all of Canada and the United States is outstanding, and bacterial contamination is exceedingly rare, as you say. Similarly, electrolytes are kept at very low levels in most parts of North America, although some water softeners do put a fair bit of sodium into the water in exchange for other ions, such as magnesium and calcium. Still, none of these trace minerals are likely to cause diarrhea.
Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.
In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy.

Please address bacterial wilt in tomatoes. My tomatoes were very robust but almost overnight began to wilt. Do we have ralstonia bacteria in this area? How can I test my garden soil to find out what is causing this? What can I do to make the soil healthy again? Home vegetable gardeners love the taste of tomatoes grown in our own gardens, but growing tomatoes also causes us many headaches since they are subject to a variety of problems. Very common in our area are fungal diseases – early blight, late blight, Septoria leaf spot, Verticillium wilt, and Fusarium wilt, to name a few. The wilt described does sound like a bacterial wilt, but of course, that can only be determined by examining the plant, especially the interior of the stem. Bacterial wilt is a disease of tomato and other plants in the nightshade family (Solaneceous). The disease occurs predominately in the wet tropics and subtropics but also has been found in some parts of the northeast. It is caused by a soil-borne bacterium and inhabits the roots, entering at points of injury caused by tools and/or pests in the soil. It can survive for long periods in the soil. In the future,to prevent bacterial wilt, and other diseases as well, here are some good practices for growing tomatoes:
SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO OUR EXPERTS! Ask them today at: GVPENNYSAVER.COM/GARDEN
6. Remove and destroy affected plants throughout the season and in the fall. Place in trash bags, NEVER in the compost.
3. Plant tomatoes in well-drained soil with a balanced pH (usually about 7 in our area). Add some compost to enrich the soil. I am partial to Bessie’s Best composted cow manure, which comes from a farm in Gainesville,NY,and can be found at J&A Farm Market in Avon.
1. Rotate crops. Bacterial wilt and fungal diseases may overwinter in the soil. Do not plant tomatoes in the same area again for about 3 years. If space is limited, consider planting a few in containers.
Marjorie A. Carpenter
7. Wash your hands after handling infected 8.plants.Clean/disinfect tools, tomato cages and trellises, and other equipment that have come in contact with diseased plants.

2. Choose resistant varieties. They are generally marked as to their resistance. Be aware, heirloom varieties are delicious but generally not disease resistant.
9. Never give up! Home grown tomatoes are one of the joys of summer and well worth the effort.
4. Space plants generously for good air 5.circulation.Waterduring the day when foliage is dry and will quickly dry afterwards; some pathogens are dispersed by splashing water and infect while the leaf surface is wet. Water consistently 1-2 inches per week.Water at the soil level avoiding the leaves. Drip irrigation is ideal.

As the cost of college tuition continues to rise and the job market grows increasingly competitive, college students are giving greater consideration to their prospects of being hired before choosing a major. A 2015 study commissioned by the National Association of Colleges and Employers asked 201 employers, including companies like Aetna, Macy’s and Procter & Gamble, which degrees are most in demand, even distinguishing between the most in demand bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. The following are the results of that study, courtesy of the NACE.
• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.
• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.
• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.
• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.
• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.
GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED
• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.
• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.
EMPLOYMENT ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111 Page30
• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.
