The breath of autumn had already passed along the foliage, and a coming death had spread over its hues golden, brown and crimson—a strange gaiety of decay, which, with all its beauty, carries an idea of sadness into one’s heart. ~T.H.E., “The German’s Daughter,” 1840
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Why Risk Buying a Pet Overseas? --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to your recent article about pet imports from overseas being banned. Potential pet owners may be frustrated by this rule, but what is their reason for going outside the country? Most likely, they want to purchase a purebred dog at a lower price. Buying a dog overseas is very risky. The countries mentioned in the temporary ban are listed for a reason. Often the breeding is poor, and standards are low. A country’s culture can play a role. They learn what is wanted, they produce, and you buy. The old saying, “You get what you pay for,” applies here. Many owners end up spending more in vet bills than they saved on an overseas dog. The risk is yours. There are many good breeders in the U.S., but they’re not always easy to find. The U.S. is not perfect and has poor breeders too. But certain standards must be met, and it will show in a so-so breeder. Three things to look for are: 1. Sanitary conditions. If the place you visit smells at all, go no further. 2. Do puppies live in the house and not in a kennel? The best of breeders will not replace human contact from birth. 3. Selling too soon. Baby animals need their mothers. A good pup has stayed with its mother ideally for 11 or 12 weeks. Anyone willing to sell under 8 weeks should raise your eyebrow. The American Kennel Club has good representatives taking calls. They are often breeders themselves and can guide you to your choice of breed. Why not get the best and safest dog? It’s important to trust your breeder. Be safe -- buy American! -- Colleen R., via email DEAR COLLEEN: You told them, and I thank you. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

3rd Canandaigua Children’s Book Fest Coming this October! BY LAUREL WEMETT
R
eading is fun – that is the message of the 3rd Canandaigua Children’s Book Fest on Saturday, October 2nd from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the main campus of Finger Lakes Community College, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive in Canandaigua, NY 14424. “The Book Fest is a wonderful way for children ages 3 to 8 years and their families to meet local authors, hear them read from their books, and be creative through craft projects based on the authors’ books,” says Mary Ferris, Wood Library’s Children’s Librarian and President of the Community Reading Partnership (CRP), that is sponsoring the Book Fest with FLCC. CRP, an all-volunteer non-profit organization, was formed as an outgrowth of a literacy improvement initiative in the Canandaigua City School District in 1998. Youngsters at the Book Fest will be meeting an assortment of costumed animals – a frog, a raccoon, and a squirrel, among others - each a character from a book written by one the guest authors and illustrators. Parents are encouraged to take photos of their children with these characters out on the front walkway if it is a nice day.
CRP has gathered a talented group of authors and illustrators whose books will be featured at the Book Fest. These include Laurie Gifford Adams Finding Atticus, Susan Beckhorn Moose Power, Judy Bradbury Cayuga Island Kids, Kevin Coolidge Ninja Raccoons book series, Margo Fass Froggy Family’s First Frolic, Marsha Hayles He Saves the Day, Nancy Lane KoKo Cat, Inside and Out and Call the Horse Lucky, David Smith Animal Quest series Debbi Socha How Much Longer?, Sally Valentine Theft at George Eastman House and What Stinks? An Adventure in Highland Park) Vivian Vande Velde Squirrel in the Museum and Squirrel in the House, and Elaine Verstraete Helen Keller.
Following the Canandaigua Children’s Book Fest, author Kevin Coolidge will be presenting a free “Book Talk for Kids” at the Ontario County Historical Society (OCHS) at 3 pm on October 2nd. Youngsters will find out that a President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, had a pet raccoon named Rebecca at the White House. The First Lady Grace Coolidge even had a treehouse built for her. The talk is presented in connection with the current OCHS exhibit, Our Family Companions: The History of Pets in Ontario County in the museum’s gallery, located at 55 North Main Street in Canandaigua. For information: (585) 394-4975. Kevin Coolidge is the owner of From My Shelf Books & Gifts in Wellsboro, PA. He’s the author of twelve children’s books and one fantastical adventure novella for adults.
Children will have the opportunity to visit craft stations where they can make something like a fire breathing dragon or a leaping frog, among other creations, each keyed to the featured books. Many of these books can also be purchased and signed by individual authors and illustrators. Sulfur Books is the Children’s Book Fest’s official book vendor. “There will be a variety of books for children of all ages,” says Sarah Butler who manages the independent book store at 18 East Main Street in Clifton Springs. “These include wonderfully illustrated picture books, books for kids at various stages as they are learning to read, and exciting chapter books for middle readers— along with some books by authors at the event.” Children who attend must be accompanied by an adult, and to ensure a healthy and safe environment, anyone over 2 years of age needs to wear a mask indoors. Festival admission and parking are free thanks to many generous sponsors including the Pi State Educational Foundation of Delta Kappa Gamma, Ontario County Arts Council, Wegmans, Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua, Aldi, CDGA Coffee Co., Canandaigua School District, Finger Lakes Community College, Xpress Yourself Screen-printing, Wood Library, and Sulfur Books.
The Community Reading Partnership’s Family Literacy Initiatives Books for Newborns: "Read to Your Bunny" by Rosemary Wells, along with tips on reading, is given to a new parent when a baby is born at Thompson Health's Birthing Center. Prescription to Read: “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” by Annie Kubler is given out at the Pediatrics offices in Canandaigua and Farmington during an infant’s wellness visit. Welcome to Kindergarten: The book, "Pete's Big Lunch” was received by kindergarteners at Canandaigua Primary and St. Mary’s Schools upon registration in 2021, followed by its use in the classroom. Tips on eating healthy are included. Little Red Bookshelves. Gently used books are available free at locations throughout Ontario County.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER As the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
High Blood Pressure Can Thicken Heart Wall ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the difference between eccentric LVH and concentric LVH? Which one is more dangerous and needs more attention? My mother was diagnosed with severe eccentric LVH for body surface area with adequate systolic and diastolic functions. What does that mean? -- C.F. ANSWER: The left ventricle is the chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the entire body, except for through the lungs; that is the job of the right ventricle. When the job is too hard, usually because of high blood pressure, the left ventricle hypertrophies, meaning its walls get thicker as a response to the increased workload. That hypertrophy can be symmetrical (concentric) or asymmetrical (eccentric). Early on, the left ventricle can still do its two jobs despite the hypertrophy: It can push out all the blood the body needs (that’s the systolic function), and relax under low pressure (that’s the diastolic function). Your mother has adequate systolic and diastolic function, so she is not in heart failure at this time. If LVH is not treated, it tends to get worse. Usually the diastolic function fails first, and the left ventricle, being thick and stiff, requires higher pressure to relax properly and allow the blood to flow in from the left atrium. The major symptom of diastolic heart failure (now called “heart failure with preserved ejection fraction,” or HF-pEF) is shortness of breath, especially with exertion. Some people may progress to having both systolic and diastolic failure (“heart failure with reduced ejection fraction,” HF-rEF), where fatigue becomes a major symptom. Swelling of the legs and increasing nighttime urination are additional symptoms. It’s not good to have either eccentric or concentric LVH, but cardiac physiologists note that concentric LVH gives the heart less ability to adapt to increased stress and has a worse prognosis. Both situations need to be treated as rapidly as possible to allow the heart to return to a more normal state. Blood pressure reduction -- whether through diet, weight loss, salt restriction, stress management, pharmacologic therapy or a combination -- is the primary treatment. Some blood pressure medications are more effective than others in helping the heart return to a more normal state, and high blood pressure experts often choose agents that are more effective in those people with LVH, especially concentric LCH, on echocardiogram. ACE inhibitors and beta blockers are typically a part of first-line treatment.

The Gospel Corner A Good Conscience 1 Timothy 1:5 – “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned.” Notice: If you have a faith that’s not fake (that’s if there’s been a day in your life where you realized you were on your way to hell, and trusted JESUS CHRIST to save you), the Holy Spirit will work in you so you’ll have a pure heart, and out of that you will get a good conscience. Be sure you don’t try to live life your way. God is the Creator and knows what your sins are. Don’t trust your conscience, trust a genuine faith described in the Bible. I’m praying wisdom for you to act on what’s in God’s WORD. See you Sunday.

Rocks, really? To the person ranting about the painted rocks: There is so much bashing and hate in this world, and you pick this to rant about? If you don’t like them, pass by and let someone else find them. I love them!
S E V RA Not so finicky A recent rave thanked the Penny Saver carriers for avoiding the delivery tube where a wren was building a nest. The writer was a kind birdwatcher but is misinformed about wrens. Male wrens identify several possible nesting locations and start building a nest in each. Then, when they meet a mate, they bring the female to each nest. She selects the one she likes the best. The nest in the tube wasn’t a sad tale of a female abandoning her work. It was a suitor trying to impress, and she liked one of his other homes better. Watching grass grow Watching grass grow is much more exciting than it sounds when it is your lawn! Thank you so much to the generous volunteers at Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County and to the young SUNY Geneseo college student who came out to prepare, seed, and straw my yard a few weeks ago. The new green grass is looking good! - Grateful Habitat Homeowner Thanks for the stories! I’d like to thank Amanda Dudek for all of her great articles she writes in the Penny Saver. Keep up the great work, Amanda! Patriot Day Thanks Thank you to those responsible for the beautiful 9/11 Ceremony at the Circle in Avon. It was wonderful to see our Veterans, EMTs, Firemen & LEOs, the Patriot Guard, St. Agnes School students and community members all pause and remember. Beautiful rendition of our national anthem too. Thank you. Honesty wins! Last Saturday, we went to the Land of the Legends Raceway in Canandaigua. When we were about to leave, we realized my boyfriend’s driver’s license was missing, so we started looking for it. He went to the booth to see if someone had turned in a driver’s license, and it was there! What a relief! We would like to say thank you so much to the stranger who found the driver’s license and returned it to the booth. We appreciate your honesty!
Going to the dogs I am afraid that my apartment complex is going to the dogs. Maybe they should just turn the place into a daycare center since there are always kids around. Whatever happened to the different activities that used to go on? If the office doesn’t want to be bothered doing anything, then maybe let someone else handle activities. Thank God we have a great maintenance crew! They are always on top of everything when they know about it.
How low can you get? During the last few weeks, our gas has been stolen out of our cars and trucks. You are going around our town and doing this. We aren’t the first. A local roadside stand has fruits and veggies that are being taken, too. Your pictures is being taken, so make sure you smile when you do these things. You need to get a job and a life. Stop doing these bad things. In case you don’t know, the people you are stealing from are retired and handicapped. You may think this is a joke, but it’s not. You will pay the consequences. My advice to you is to get a job and be a human, not a thief. May God have pity on you if you get caught. - Resident of this Little Town

Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

shred the leaves. It’s always best to do this when leaves are dry. Do put them through a leaf shredder. If your mower isn’t set up for mulching, consider a dedicated leaf shredder or a leaf blower with a shredder attachment. In addition, don’t hurt your back by endless raking. Be mindful of posture
if you do. Do use leaves as natural mulch for plants and animals. When leaves fall in the woods, they break down and add nutrients to the soil that improve the health of native plants. As with all mulches, make sure you don’t pile the leaves directly against plant and tree trunks.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Budget to Stay Busy, Not Bored This Winter This winter is not going to be a repeat of last year, at least not at my house. COVID will no doubt keep raging around the world, limiting our options for activities, canceling plans that were made with fingers crossed. But here at home I’m going to be busy, not bored. I’ve decided to spend a little mental health money that in a normal world I would have used for meals out, a few new outfits and maybe a couple of weekends away at a very nice hotel in the next state. To make up for the disappointments, I’ve renewed my Amazon Prime, not only for the free shipping but for the movies and videos I can watch for free. There are hundreds of documentaries, including ones on travel, giving me great views of places I can’t currently go. There are thousands of movies and television series I can watch with my Roku device. And then there are the books, sent instantly to my Kindle, with font sizes I can change in a moment. If I’m in the mood for British television and movies, Adobe.tv has a big selection (even Australian!), only costing a few dollars per month. BritBox is nearly as good as Adobe, at almost the same price. I’m looking at an inexpensive exercise bike, possibly a recumbent one. These allow all the movements of riding a bicycle, but there is a seat back to lean against and two handles to hold. (If there is no space for a bike, there are pedal machines that can be used while seated in a chair.) And then there are the arts and crafts to fill the long days. I searched online for crafts for adults and found thousands of kits, including several types I’d never tried before. Some of them, if they turn out well, might end up being holiday gifts I won’t have to shop for! (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.
HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics:
Magic Maze WELL-MADE WORDS
1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. NOW HERE’S A TIP
Crest of crimson tint and folds of fading green,
By JoAnn Derson
Stand the woods in tranquil beauty as of old,
* Have your carpets cleaned. Hightraffic areas may require cleaning as often as every three or four months, but bedrooms can go as long as 18 months. Use runners and area rugs to safeguard spots that may be vulnerable, like under a vanity or by your sofas.
Stretching into vistas dim and opaline; When the Year is ripe and mellow it is meet Earth should echo, “Peace is blessed; rest is sweet.” ~C.B. Galbreath, “Autumn Afternoon,” This Crimson Flower, In Flanders Field—An Answer, and Other Verse, 1919
* “I had some residue on my bathroom ceiling from hard water condensation. I happened to have a set of crutches lying around. I used a hair elastic to secure a hand towel to the arm rest of one crutch. Then I sprayed it with water and used it to scrub the ceiling. It worked really well. I was done in no time.” -- A.A. in Florida * Two ways to remove a bandage: Rub a little baby oil or vegetable oil over it. The oil will soak in and make it easier to remove. Or -- and this works especially well with kids -- have them soak in the bath and use baby shampoo to soften the sticky edges. * A baking soda and water mix is great for tile floors if you want a quick mop up. If a lot of your floors are tile, do yourself a favor and invest in a steam mop. They clean and sanitize, leaving your floors brilliant. * Be sure you use a trivet or other protectant when placing flowerpots on wood floors. Also, purchase felt pads for the bottoms of furniture. This will eliminate divots or other kinds of depressions or scratches in the floor. * “Tiny tears in your window screen can be secured with clear nail polish. I dab the spot, then use tweezers to line up the tiny wires, then dab again. Just make sure the window is open, or the screen might stick to the windowpane.” -- T.T. in Indiana

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.
WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.
DID YOU KNOW? Many college students are struggling to graduate without accumulating substantial student loan debt. Data compiled from Market Watch, an economy and investing resource, has found that nearly 70 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients leave school with considerable debt. It’s estimated that America’s student loan debt grows almost $3,000 per second. The Institute for College Access & Success has listed the average American student debt at $29,000. The Canadian Federation of Students lists the average debt at $27,000 for Canadian students. The burden of debt may cause graduates to accept the first job offer that comes along and/or impede their ability to buy houses or make other large purchases. Only about 40 percent of borrowers are paying down their debts after landing a job. Graduates should realize that many loans only have six-month grace periods before repayment begins. Those who feel that student loan repayment may be difficult can speak to a financial advisor to go over loan consolidation, refinancing or extending the repayment period to make monthly payments more manageable.
