BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

Different types of treatment are available for patients with breast cancer. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), and some are being tested in clinical trials. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are open only to patients who have not started treatment.

* On Oct. 6, 1926, Yankee slugger Babe Ruth hits a record three home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth game of the World Series. In 1928, in the fourth game of another Yanks-Cards World Series, he knocked three more pitches out of the same park.

* On Oct. 10, 1985, the hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro ends when U.S. Navy F-14 fighters intercept an Egyptian airliner attempting to fly the Palestinian hijackers to freedom. On Oct. 7, heavily armed terrorists had hijacked the ship and 400 crewmembers and passengers.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS

Stripe smut

The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING

When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree.

BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS

It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms.

Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes.

Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk.

The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus.

Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports.

Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following:

• Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com.

• Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans.

• Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky.

• Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time.

Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.

FARMINGTON

Just after the death of the flowers, And before they are buried in snow,

There comes a festival season, When nature is all aglow— Aglow with a mystical spendour That rivals the brightness of spring,

[L]o! the eventide of the year, the melancholy season of Autumn.... the widowed quail, which is shivering on the fallen tree, utters her plaintive cry, causing a momentary sadness to oppress his heart. The oak rears its head above the plain, but is stripped of its foliage,—naked and alone,—a fit emblem of man in the hour of adversity. We see the leaves floating on the bosom of the river, and we feel that such too will soon be our condition.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

DID YOU KNOW?

Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

Herbal Product Can Help Soothe

Gastro-intestinal Symptoms

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had gastroparesis for many years. About two years ago, it led to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (which I once read about in your column). I worked with a dietician for several months. One of the treatments she suggested was an herbal product called Iberogast. The combination of herbs helps the stomach to empty quicker. I use it each night before bed (as part of a 12-hour fast), or whenever I have overeaten and feel bad. It has been most helpful for me. Iberogast is available online. -- L.E. ANSWER: Iberogast is a combination of nine medicinal plant extracts. Studies in Germany and Austria, where it is most commonly used, have shown the medication to be more effective than the placebo (and about as effective as one common prescription medication) in the treatment of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel disease. The medication has generally been regarded as safe, but there are rare cases of liver injury associated with this medication, with at least one of which eventually requiring a liver transplantation.

All medications -- whether prescription or overthe-counter, natural or synthetic -- have the potential for harm. Iberogast is pretty safe, with just a handful of bad outcomes in its 50 years of use, involving millions of doses, but it can still cause rare and severe adverse effects. Iberogast is worth considering in people whose symptoms have not been successfully treated with other therapies.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES

Stay away from pollen. Stay away from pollen and prevent it from being tracked indoors. Remove shoes when walking through the door. BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

Hormone therapy is a cancer treatment that removes hormones or blocks their action and stops cancer cells from growing. Hormones are substances made by glands in the body and circulated in the bloodstream. Some hormones can cause certain cancers to grow. If tests show that the cancer cells have places where hormones can attach (receptors), drugs, surgery, or radiation therapy is used to reduce the production of hormones or block them from working. The hormone estrogen, which makes some breast cancers grow, is made mainly by the ovaries. Treatment to stop the ovaries from making estrogen is called ovarian ablation.

Hormone therapy with tamoxifen is often given to patients with early localized breast cancer that can be removed by surgery and those with metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body). Hormone therapy with tamoxifen or estrogens can act on cells all over the body and may increase the chance of developing endometrial cancer. Women taking tamoxifen should have a pelvic exam every year to look for any signs of cancer. Any vaginal bleeding, other than menstrual bleeding, should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible.

Hormone therapy with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonist is given to some premenopausal women who have just been diagnosed with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. LHRH agonists decrease the body’s estrogen and progesterone.

Hormone therapy with an aromatase inhibitor is given to some postmenopausal women who have hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors decrease the body’s estrogen by blocking an enzyme called aromatase from turning androgen into estrogen. Anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane are types of aromatase inhibitors. For the treatment of early localized breast cancer that can be removed by surgery, certain aromatase inhibitors may be used as adjuvant therapy insteadoftamoxifenorafter2to3yearsoftamoxifenuse.Forthetreatment of metastatic breast cancer, aromatase inhibitors are being tested in clinical trials to compare them to hormone therapy with tamoxifen. Other types of hormone therapy include megestrol acetate or antiestrogen therapy such as fulvestrant.

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS Symptoms of cataracts

Individuals with cataracts may begin to experience diminished vision. Harvard Medical School says cataracts typically do not cause any symptoms until they have grown large enough to affect vision.Afterwards, symptoms can include:

· Double vision

· Cloudy

Masks are required.

Flu Shot Clinics

NOTE: The vaccine is administered to those 9 years of age and older.

HOW TO OVERCOME

Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

DEAR JESSICA: ere certainly are volunteer opportunities for kids in most communities. e hard part can be nding one that will work for your kids, t in with school schedules and provide the kind of rewarding experience you want them to have. PAWS.org, for example, has several volunteer opportunities in the Lynnwood, Washington, area. e shelter doesn’t allow kids under 18 to work directly with animals, but it hosts a special Day of Service for those 10 or older to help spruce up its dog trail, and hosts a PAWSwalk each summer. Kids also can choose to “donate their day” -- ask for donations to the organization in lieu of birthday presents, for example. at’s just one organization in one area. Kids and parents should search for local shelters and animal-rescue organizations to see what volunteer or fundraising opportunities are available. Another, more immediate opportunity may be right in your neighborhood. Do you have friends or neighbors with pets? Are they willing to let your kids visit and play with their dog or cat? Is there an elderly relative or friend who needs help walking their dog or taking their cat to the veterinarian? Remember that, as the parent, you’ll need to supervise your kids for many of these events or pet-care opportunities. But you’ll be giving them key tools to be awesome pet owners of the future.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER

Water helps to fight fatigue. The fatigue-fighting properties of water are another of its lesser known benefits. When the body is not adequately hydrated, it can experience muscle soreness. And fitness enthusiasts who do not drink enough water may notice their bodies require extensive recovery time after working out. Each of those consequences can be prevented by drinking enough water, and doing so can even improve performance, as studies have shown that just a 3 percent loss of body weight due to dehydration can cause as much as a 10 percent drop in performance level.

EMPTY HEARTED WORSHIP

Jesus said, “Ye Hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you saying,This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew l5:7) So many Christians (professing anyway) have the idea so long as they go to an hour worship service and go through various religious rituals of their church that the LORD must be satisfied with their homage and He will certainly be pleased and overlook their phony life the rest of the week. Wow. Jesus couldn’t stand it then, and can’t today either. “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found” Is the message to all. See ya Sunday.

SENIOR NEWS

Free College Courses

In an attempt to keep brain cells active this winter, I have signed up for a college course. e good news is that it’s all online and it’s free. e other good news is that it’s sponsored by a major university.

It’s called Open Courseware, and I found my class on the internet. Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and many others have “massive open online courses,” also known as MOOCs, and their main purpose is to provide learning opportunities. You have to appreciate MIT especially. ey make course material for their 2,600 classes “available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.”

Most of these open courseware classes are self-paced (do them when you want a er downloading the lecture). Most don’t get you a certi cate or a degree, but then most don’t cost anything either. Beware, of course, scammers who’d like to take your personal information and charge you for a class that’s actually free and doesn’t require you to sign up. Your best bet, until you’re familiar with open courseware, is to stick to the big-name universities.

For a three-minute video showing an explanation of MIT’s open courseware, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICa_4xUr8BA.

Read the ne print on the website as you hunt for a class. Read the syllabus (description of the course) and the list of texts to be used. If you’re required to read books, see if they’re free to download online. (Some of the material downloads are huge.) Pay attention to the estimated time commitment for the course you want to take.

If you de nitely want to attend in-person college but need nancial help, see www.aseniorcitizenguideforcollege.com. Click on “Find Your State Tuition Waivers” and see if any in your state are covered. Some colleges will have a link to an application for a tuition waiver for seniors; some will just have a website and phone number to call for information.

Note: e Great Courses (www.thegreatcourses.com) are not open courseware and will cost money. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children.

When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds

Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes.

* Get started by selling entry to the event and prize tickets. Some organizations prefer to sell entry packages to participants. This may include an entrance fee to the event as well as a number of tickets that can be used at the auction. Naturally, more tickets will be available for sale at the night of the event. Advertise the gift auction well in advance to generate interest. Mention a few of the big-ticket prizes in any advertisements to increase interest.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)

Serves 4

1 pound morcilla blood sausage

1 pound mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, slivered

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons white wine

1 cup shelled spring peas

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoons mint oil

Mint Oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup chopped mint

Pinch of salt

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

RAVES

Thank you, Livonia!

Thank you to the wonderful businesses in Livonia NY for sponsoring Autumn in the Village. My grandchildren from Syracuse look forward to this wonderful festival as do I. This family friendly event is making memories for this Grandma and Papa!

Deepest Thanks

On August 13th at about 12:45pm, there was a horrible car accident on Route 19, just north of LeRoy. Many people stopped to help. The man in the car behind me came immediately to see if I was “all right.” The neighbor across the street came, bandaged my hand, let me use her cell phone to call my daughter, and put my frozen foods in her own freezer to preserve them. A wonderful friend who happened to be passing by, stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. Many passersby stopped to give the police an accurate report of what had happened. Most of all, I am deeply grateful to all the police, including the State Troopers who showed me great concern and protection. They were superb. Thank you to all who helped in so many ways. - Rosemary F.

Thank you, Teachers!

Thank you to teachers and staff for making the start to this school year so fun for the students. It’s nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again!

Thanks, Coach!

Thank you to girls’ soccer coaches for all your hard work and positivity! Go Braves!

Grape Fest Praise

Kudos to the Naples Grape Festival for once again providing a wonderful festival with something for everyone! With the weather cooperating as it did, it turned out to be the perfect day indeed! I hope that you had fun if you attended; I know that I did!

Vulgar Signs on Property

I have noticed in our town as well as other towns that people displaying signs on their property with vulgar words on them. Please think about others before you display foul language for the world to see. Are you helping make the world a better place, or are you adding to the abundant filth that permeates our culture? There are so many children who travel by your homes every day and have to see these awful words that they should not even know...but now do because of you. Please remove these offensive signs and show some respect to others. Help make the world kinder instead of adding more turmoil to it.

No Trash because of "Rotten Apples"

Some public areas don’t have bins because cheap [people] use those receptacles to avoid their weekly household trash disposal fee. The result is a double whammy: abused opportunity means “no public bins,” then ground litter accumulates for lack of handy receptacles!

I live near a rural park without any bins, just a sign declaring a “carry in, carry out” policy. This policy is often ignored, so on my walks, I pick up the resulting roadway trash and pay for its proper disposal since others won’t accept responsibility.

Poor Service!

We certainly enjoy supporting all of our local businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. On a Saturday a few months ago, we received in our mail a coupon to [a local establishment]. When [we went to use it and] the clerk rang up my order, it was full price. When I had this new coupon, our [clerk said we couldn't] use our coupon. I requested the manager to void one [item]. She said there was nothing she could do. I asked for the owner's name, and the manager said, "I don't know. Look it up on Google." How unprofessional and rude! STEPS TO ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal.

Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack.

The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team.
