This move was unexpected, unplanned and painfully difficult for us and our entire staff. We really enjoyed the short time we conducted business from the 1260 Rochester St., Lima, NY location but unfortunately the building was sold this past September and our lease was not renewed. We investigated other commercial rental opportunities within the Honeoye Falls - Lima area but after much consideration we have opted to move the Honeoye Falls H&R Block into the same building as the Avon H&R Block office at 5552 East Avon Plaza, Avon, NY 14414. We will still be operating independently with our own entrance and parking at the rear of the building. We were able to move our existing telephone and fax numbers to this new location. We are still in the process of setting up furniture, computers and network systems but we will be ready to serve you with the same staff and consideration we always have by the upcoming tax season. To apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this move may cause you, we would like to offer you a $20.00 discount towards your 2018 Income Tax Return as a thank you for continuing to be a loyal client. Thank You, Lew Ann Reshnyk , Dawn Every, Karen Durkee, Peggy Durkee, Nelson Mastin

$20 Off Tax Preparation

Happy New Year! www.bloomfieldpubliclibrary.org

Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope; winter alone reminds us of the human condition. ~ Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic’s Notebook, 1966

GLOBAL NEW YEAR’S TRADITIONS Around Stonehaven, Scotland, people wield large fireballs for the Hogmanay festival on New Year’s Eve. The idea is to ward off evil spirits by swinging balls of fires over the heads of trained professionals and then tossing them into the sea. The tradition has endured for more than 100 years.

Livonia Kiwanis Celebrates 2 Years of Toys for Tots Submitted by Robin Phenes For a moment, try to imagine the excitement you felt at Christmas when you were a child. Remember the butterflies in your stomach as you awaited a visit from Santa. Remember the magical feeling on Christmas morning when you saw the gifts that Santa put under the tree and in your stocking. Now try to imagine what it would be like if you woke up on Christmas morning and there were no toys, no magic and no excited laughter. Imagine the sadness of a parent experiencing financial hardship and not being able to provide a joyful Christmas for their children. Fortunately, the elves at Livonia Kiwanis ensure that no child in the Livonia School District experiences a Christmas with no toys. In 1998, Livonia Kiwanis was given the privilege to oversee the local Toys for Tots program. Over the past 2 years, the program has brought Christmas magic to hundreds of families and thousands of children in the Livonia School District. In 2017 alone, Toys for Tots provided toys for 166 children in 69 families. Several Toys for Tots programs have popped up within the community in recent years, but only the Livonia Kiwanis Program ensures that 100% of the toys collected are given to children within the Livonia School District. The Toys for Tots program sponsored by Livonia Kiwanis provides a unique Christmas experience to local families. Unlike many Toys for Tots programs that distribute a standard bag of toys regardless of the age, gender, or interests of a child, the Livonia Kiwanis Toys for Tots program allows parents to “shop” for the gifts that match the interests and personalities of their children. With the help of Kiwanis elves, parents choose the toys that will make their children happy. “Families are always extremely grateful for the toys provided by the community, and it is a joy to see the happiness of the parents as they prepare for Christmas Day,” said one Kiwanis member. Toys for Tots would not be possible without the generous donation of toys and money from

wonderful people and businesses in our community. The kids at the Livonia Central School learn the importance of giving during their toy drive for the Livonia Kiwanis program. Toy collection boxes are located at several local businesses, including Wanda’s (formerly Shelby’s Restaurant), Livonia Fitness, and Five Star Bank. Community members can also donate toys at the Livonia Library and the United Methodist Church of Livonia Thrift Store (which collects new toys year-round). Monetary donations collected through Livonia Kiwanis are also used to purchase toys or items for various age groups to ensure all children receive the Christmas they deserve. Livonia Kiwanis, a civic organization dedicated to benefitting children within our community, raises money for Toys for Tots throughout the year at various events. Two steak dinner fundraisers in May and October at the American Legion in Livonia Center provide attendees with a fun dice game (Bunko), raffles, and prizes donated by generous local businesses. At the Hemlock Fair, Livonia Kiwanis sells 50/50 tickets to benefit Toys for Tots and other local programs for children. Livonia Kiwanis is always looking for new “elves” to join their team and bring Christmas cheer to local families. If you are looking for a rewarding way to spend time with good people and give back to your community, consider joining Livonia Kiwanis – a gift of your time to volunteer is like Christmas magic that lasts throughout the year!

Take Steps To Improve Your Retirement Confidence (NAPSI)—A recent study by the Insured Retirement Institute found that only 25 percent of baby boomers believe they will have enough money in retirement and just 28 percent believe they did a good job financially preparing for their retirement years. This dismal view of their retirement prospects by so many aging Americans is concerning, but what is even more sobering is the study found that boomers are actually less satisfied with their finances than they were as recently as five years ago. In 2012, 41 percent of baby boomers believed they were doing a good job of financial preparation. This decline in retirement confidence has taken place in spite of healthy market conditions and rising interest rates for most retirees’ investments. Fortunately, the news doesn’t have to be so bad if seniors allow this news to serve as a wake-up call for them to take action. Here are five steps that experts say boomers can take to revisit their retirement plans now and fix things that have gone awry: 1. Reassess priorities. Take stock of your available resources and prioritize your needs vs. your wants, based on where your life is now and what is most important to you in the years ahead. 2. Raise cash. Consider options that may be available to you for boosting your savings, such as a part-time job or perhaps selling off some possessions you no longer need. 3. Generate interest. Re-evaluate where your money is sitting today and consider moving as much as you can out of cash and into interest-bearing accounts, which are paying depositors more than they have in several years.

4. Look for hidden assets. Inventory all your assets that might create cash flow, including those you may have overlooked in the past, such as a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is your personal property and, if you no longer need or can afford it, you may be able to sell it for an immediate cash payment. 5. Leverage your house. If you own your home, consider a reverse mortgage or a home equity line of credit as a way to free up cash that you can use to pay off health care bills or other expenses. Of these five steps, the one that could produce the most immediate cash flow may be the sale of a life insurance policy, known as a life settlement. Most consumers who qualify for a life settlement are 70 or older and own a life insurance policy with a benefit of at least $100,000. For more information or for a free evaluation of your life insurance policy, go to www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at 888-985-0773.

LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.

BRINGING FAMILIES TOGETHER AROUND THE WORLD (NAPSI)—With all the sad stories of conflict and desperation from around the world, it can be heartening to hear of loved ones reunited. Here are just two of the happy examples: • Lydia spent months wondering if her daughter Odette was alive. Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced Lydia to seek asylum in the U.S., leaving her far away from her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom—she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me to talk to her. There was no other way.” • Conflict in Burundi forced Fidele to flee and lose touch with his loved ones, including his father. After living in Tucson, Arizona, for some time, he connected with the Red Cross RFL program to open up a search for his father to help give him peace of mind. After months of searching, Fidele finally received the welcome message: His father was alive and well. Armed conflict, international disasters and migration leave millions of people around the globe in urgent need of humanitarian assistance every year. As the world’s largest humanitarian network, Red Cross and Red Crescent teams help reconnect families separated by international crises. How It Works Red Cross Restoring Family Links services are free and confidential and help reconnect loved ones when: 1. Families are separated as a result of disaster, migration or other humanitarian emergency. 2. Families have already tried normal channels of communication to reconnect. 3. The family member making the inquiry is able to provide essential information on the sought person. 4. The family member making the inquiry is a relative who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred. Learn More: For more info, to help the Red Cross or to ask for help, go to www.redcross.org/ international.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It’s a good time to take a much-needed break from your recent hectic schedule and spend some time in quieter surroundings. Important news could arrive early next week. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Taurean traits of reliability and thoroughness could be well-tested when decision-makers consider your proposals and/or requests. Be prepared to answer some probing questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sudden attack of boredom leaves you with some tasks undone. It’s OK to take a short respite. But get back to work by week’s end so that you have time for other projects. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid prejudging a situation just because it looks bad. Facts could emerge that would make your position uncomfortable, to say the least. A relative has interesting news to share with you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to begin reassessing some of your recent decisions about your longrange goals to see if they still have merit. Spend more time with loved ones this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettled situation at home or on the job early in the week could drain your energy levels, making it difficult to get your work done on schedule. But things improve by midweek. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A temporary setback could give you time to go over your plans to find weaknesses you might have overlooked before. A romantic getaway with that special person is favored this weekend. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Professional and personal situations benefit once you set a positive tone in getting things off to a good start. Honest dialogue smoothes over any occasional display of balkiness. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A problem with workplace colleagues or family members seems to defy even your sage counsel. But be patient. Your words eventually will lead to a resolution. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t just wait out that unexpected and unexplained delay in your career move. You could gain added respect if you ask why it happened and what you can do to move things along. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Although your workplace strategies usually are accepted, you could be challenged by someone who isn’t so favorably impressed. Be prepared to defend your positions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your friendship circle expands, with new people coming into your life at this time. Welcome them warmly. But don’t neglect those cherished longtime personal relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You love to search for knowledge and share it with others. You would make an especially fine teacher. Owners and store managers, please do the decent thing and give your cashiers those little beeswax cakes businesses used to have or even some hand cream. Either that or I'll find some other places to shop.

Am I the only one disgusted by cashiers licking their fingers while opening plastic bags and handling cash, etc.? I've been seeing a lot of this lately and I can't believe that others haven't complained about it or that cashiers don't seem to be concerned about what germs they are putting in their mouths.

Why are you in the roadway on your medical scooter, after dark, no lights on scooter, and wearing dark clothing? It is VERY dangerous not only to you but to other drivers in cars, trucks and other actual licensed vehicles on the road. The sidewalks are plowed. If it's going to be okay to drive a medical scooter on roads, then get lights on it, get it inspected, licensed, and insurance registration just like you have to do for any other motorized vehicle! While it is nice to feature young athletes, it is discouraging to see that the focus of the coverage is building unfair and unrealistic pressure on these kids. Whether or not a team is going to win a sectional title this year or in the future should be secondary. Athletes’ participation should be rewarded with positive coverage, not negative pressure. EASTWAY EDITION

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2018

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Alternative Therapies in Cancer Treatment --DEAR DR. ROACH: I wonder why you never talk about holistic measures to prevent illnesses, such as cancer. I just read an article by an oncologist who said there are certain anti-cancer supplements that work, including vitamin D, magnolia extract and artichoke extract, all of which have been shown in laboratory studies to kill a variety of cancer cells, including colon, breast and liver cancers, and leukemia. Artichoke extract also contains cynarin, which decreases inflammation. Other compounds that can reduce cancer growth are black cumin seed oil and bee propolis, which is rich in caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), chrysin and cinnamic acid -- compounds that affect cancer genes. Studies show that they reduce the growth of many cancers, including colon, prostate and kidney. I’ve also read about the powerful effects that simple seasonings have on cancer cells: black pepper, sage and oregano. My question to you is: Why isn’t this blasted all over the news media, and why don’t physicians who can access this information tell it to their patients? -- V.A. ANSWER: The therapies you mention are termed “complementary” or “alternative” treatments, specifically “herbal treatments.” Holistic medicine, on the other hand, aims to treat the entire person -- physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Holistic medicine ought to be a goal for all providers, since health consists of much more than mere absence of physical disease. While a physician can help with some of these aspects, it is difficult or impossible for one person to be expert in helping a person meet all goals of wellness, which is why collaborative care is so important. With respect to the herbal treatments you mention, and others like them, it is my opinion that these have potential to help treat some kinds of cancer. However, I am quite convinced, after reading many studies, that none of them is completely effective at preventing or curing cancer. Compounds can be very effective at killing cancer cells in a laboratory, but that is very different from killing cancer cells in a person at a level that’s achievable without toxicity. That’s why they aren’t on the news media -- they aren’t a cure, and haven’t been proven definitively helpful. If that changes, I will be among the first to spread the news. Where I believe alternative therapies have the most potential in cancer is in combination with traditional therapies: helping people feel better through chemotherapy and radiation. Some herbals, like turmeric, have solid data showing benefit in combination with chemotherapy in treating some cancers. However, finding an oncologist who has expertise in alternative treatment might not be easy. Similarly, finding an alternative medicine provider who knows enough about cancer and chemotherapy to be of value to both the patient and the oncologist isn’t easy. There are some centers where both traditional and complementary therapies are used, and where the patient’s entire care team is aware of all the treatments a patient is getting. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
