Give her er y your heartt th this Valent tin Valentine’s Day ay! Day!
HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day. Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.

Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds.

New Brain Health Initiative Could Unlock Mysteries Of Alzheimer’s, Dementia (NAPS)—Scientists are contemplating important questions about health, mind and age: Could your blood hold the molecular secrets to a fountain of youth, preventing agerelated brain disorders? Are brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease caused by a failure of interconnected systems, triggering a dominolike cascade of disease? Can targeting the red blood cells and blood vessels jointly keep your brain healthy and prevent dementia? The Problem As people live longer, Alzheimer’s and other age-related dementias are on the rise, projected to reach more than 75 million people worldwide by 2030. To date, no effective therapy has been developed for these disorders, which are not only deadly but exact a high financial and emotional toll on society. The Research To find solutions, three large-scale research teams are exploring those questions as part of an initiative to merge research of the brain and the blood vessels to develop new understanding of—and, ultimately, better preventions and treatments for—age-related brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. The Scientists To help, American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, and The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, a division of the Allen Institute, launched the $43 million research project to bridge the science of vascular and brain health through revolutionary, out-of-the-box thinking. Additional supporters include the Oskar Fischer Project and the Henrietta B. and Frederick H. Bugher Foundation. The three teams, headquartered at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif.; Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif.; and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland, OH, respectively, work to develop new solutions to the urgent problem of age-related cognitive decline. The researchers are: • “Rusty” Gage, Ph.D., a neuroscience researcher and president of Salk, who will lead an eight-year project looking into new targets for therapeutic research and biomarkers of early-stage cognitive decline. • Tony Wyss-Coray, Ph.D., a professor of neurology at Stanford, who will lead a four-year project studying how changes in the immune system affect cognitive health. • Mukesh K. Jain, M.D., a cardiologist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, who will lead a team of investigators on a four-year project investigating whether targeting red blood cells and blood vessels can prevent dementia. The Hope The research could yield transformational discoveries to better detect, treat and prevent cognitive decline. Scientists are seeking answers to important questions about how to preserve your mind over time.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Homes are safe havens that people retreat to in an effort to relax and unwind. However, homes may be harboring some hazards that put their inhabitants at risk. Cleaning products and chemicals can be found in every home, but some may be putting people in jeopardy. Even seemingly safe items can prove dangerous when they are used and/or stored incorrectly. Individuals who make a concerted effort to educate themselves about common household chemicals can reduce the likelihood that such cleaners will hurt them in the long run.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read an article on the pros and cons of a daily aspirin for protection against both heart disease and colon cancer. This is not a new topic, I realize, and I know that the benefits of daily aspirin apply only to certain segments of the population. Here’s my question: If a person doesn’t experience any stomach or bleeding issues, does a much higher dose of aspirin daily also convey the same possibly protective effects? I don’t believe that more is better, but I already take an average of nine 325 mg generic aspirin tablets daily for leg pain. I’m in that 50-59 age group, and there is heart disease on both sides of my family, so I’m hoping this dose confers some cardiac benefit. I would love to find a cure for the deep ache I get in my legs -usually just the right calf. I’ve had these since I was a child, and I’ve reconciled myself to the fact that I will have them for the rest of my life, but the aspirin I take has never caused me stomach pain or excessive bleeding, and it works for the pain. -- T.P. ANSWER: The studies showing that taking aspirin protects the heart mostly have been done using 81 mg daily or 325 mg every other day. However, the mechanism of the action, preventing platelets from forming a clot, is even stronger at higher doses, so it would make sense that higher doses would be at least as effective. However, they are much more likely to cause bleeding, even if most people can take higher doses without problems. So it’s recommended you take the minimum effective dose to get the benefit with the least harm. In your case, however, I think you are likely getting all the benefit there may be. I say “may be” because recent studies have failed to replicate the protection seen in earlier studies. I still believe that aspirin is useful in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease. More and more evidence is coming out that the same low dose of aspirin helps protect against several forms of cancer, especially of the colon. However, I don’t yet recommend it just to protect against cancer, but I will continue to pay careful attention to ongoing studies on aspirin and will revisit this topic when more research becomes available. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent test, my blood vitamin D level was good, at 43, but my calcitriol level was low at 16. I do have hyperglycemia, but how do I increase my calcitriol level? I take no medications. -- J.I. ANSWER: If you don’t have kidney or parathyroid hormone problems, then calcitriol isn’t the right blood test to determine your bone health relative to vitamin D. Calcitriol is an activated form of vitamin D, and it best reflects calcium intake. I suspect low calcium intake when I see a high calcitriol. Since calcitriol removes calcium from the bones, it may worsen osteoporosis. If you haven’t had your kidneys and parathyroid hormone level (which also affects calcium movement in the kidney and bones) checked recently, then do so. If those are OK, then be sure to get enough calcium, especially from dietary sources like leafy green vegetables. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Hello my name is Isa Baby! I am a male vanilla cream ball python with a big attitude! I am one year old, although I can live to about 20! My favorite thing to do is stare at Mom while I’m underneath my log hoping she’ll give me a snack. Sometimes if I’m having a bad day and want to be left alone I’ll hiss, but it’s all drama. I’ve never bitten anyone before. I’m a little bit shy around new people, but I love to give kisses!
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Some unsettling facts about a past situation could come to light. And while you’d love to deal with it immediately, it’s best to get more information to support your case. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A straightforward approach to a baffling situation is best. Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into an already messy mass of tangles and lies. Deal with it and move on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be discouraged or deterred by a colleague’s negative opinion about your ideas. It could actually prove to be helpful when you get around to finalizing your plan. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Ignore that sudden attack of “modesty,” and step up to claim the credit you’ve so rightly earned. Remember: A lot of people are proud of you and want to share in your achievement. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A financial “deal” that seems to be just right for you Leos and Leonas could be grounded more in gossamer than substance. Get an expert’s advice to help you check it out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Don’t ignore that suddenly cool or even rude attitude from someone close to you. Asking for an explanation could reveal a misunderstanding you were completely unaware of. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Unless you have sound knowledge, and not just an opinion, it’s best not to step into a family dispute involving a legal matter, regardless of whom you support. Leave that to the lawyers. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An awkward situation presents the usually socially savvy Scorpian with a problem. But a courteous and considerate approach soon helps clear the air and ease communication. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A calmer, less-tense atmosphere prevails through much of the week, allowing you to restore your energy levels before tackling a new challenge coming up by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your approach to helping with a friend or family member’s problem could boomerang unless you take time to explain your method and how and why it (usually!) works. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Someone who gave you a lot of grief might ask for a chance for the two of you to make a fresh start. You need to weigh the sincerity of the request carefully before giving your answer. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Too much fantasizing about an upcoming decision could affect your judgment. Better to make your choices based on what you know now rather than on what you might learn later. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of seeing the best in people and helping them live up to their potential. (c) 2019 King Features Syndicate

Pittsford Neighbors Use Generosity To Build Community
By Amanda Dudek
T
hrough modern technology, we can now have constant access to people and information, but are we developing authentic, realitybased relationships? Some suggest that in spite of our digital hyperconnectivity, we are, in fact, becoming more isolated. Online groups, which are centered on giving locally, are helping people make these connections, across the web and across town. One online group, Buy Nothing (BN) Pittsford, which operates through Facebook, allows people within a specific geographical area, typically a town or a neighborhood, to connect within a gift-based economy. Uniquely, nothing is to be bought or sold in this group, ever. Everything must be absolutely free. Members post “gifts,” which can be anything from actual items such as toys, lightbulbs or clothing to gifts of self (like shoveling a driveway), gifts of talent (such as offering a free guitar lesson) and gifts of time (such as offering to be a jogging partner). Members can also post requests searching for things they need or want. Members can offer to lend or request to borrow items, too. This gift-based economy creates a unique giving experience. Pittsford group founder Christine Winchester notes that she particularly enjoys seeing group members asking for something, then seeing that need or wish be met. Her fellow group administrator Stephanie agrees. “I love the feeling that beyond donating you can gift something to someone who really wants it and can use it,” explains Stephanie, describing how giving through Buy Nothing differs from other methods. Also unique is BN’s continual encouragement for its members to wait before choosing whom to select to receive an item they have posted. Says Christine, “One behavior we try to encourage is letting a post sit for 24 hours rather than just choosing the first response. This allows people who are not able to reply the quickest to have a chance, too. There is no right or wrong way to choose a recipient of the gift, you can choose them for whatever reason.” Christine and Stephanie also state that this purposeful delay at times allows members to connect with a member they otherwise would not have. This connection is one of BN Pittsford’s greatest goals. Christine explains that groups like hers are “hyperlocal,” that is, each BN group is centered around a specific town or neighborhood, and only people who live within that town or neighborhood can be accepted into that specific BN group. Therefore, members are also neighbors, and the giving and taking starts building a greater sense of connection across the community. As Stephanie says, “I live in a particular part of town where I have everything I need nearby. BN lets me go into, see and explore other parts of my community as I am either dropping off or picking up items. It has been a very good experience.” Members like Stephanie are meeting their real-life neighbors, as well, and the Pittsford group, started in July 2017, has already The recipient of this item was selected burgeoned to 570 members. Christine by best pirate themed joke. remembers when it was just an idea. “I was inspired partly out of a desire to embrace minimalism in my own life,” Christine recalls, describing the appeal that reducing waste through free gifting held for her. “Also, I have a heart for my community, and I am very empathetic and caring about the people around me. It is so important to me to build those connections with my neighbors.” Stephanie adds that she came to the group a little later. “When I moved here, I saw Buy Nothing Pittsford on Facebook and joined it. I loved the community feel. I have made friends, explored Pittsford; there are a lot of positives.” In fact, the friendship between these two women is itself a testament to the community building effects of BN groups. As Christine
shares, “Stephanie was an early member who reached out to me this past fall and asked if I would like some help administrating the group. I made her Co-Admin.” Stephanie chuckles a bit as she remembers, “I saw that our group was getting big, and I thought that Christine would probably need some assistance.” When reflecting on what it was like becoming the Co-Admin, Stephanie shares, “I was a little nervous just learning, but now I love it. Christine Co-Administrator Stephanie and her son has taught me so much.” with Founder Christine. Who can say if these kind, generous and inspiring ladies, neighbors, ever would have met each other had it not been for a BN group? While it hasn’t been completely smooth sailing, both Christine and Stephanie state that issues are rare, and they have established a positive group culture. “Our group is a really helpful and positive place,” says Stephanie. Christine concurs, recalling a particularly heartwarming story. “There was this one couple that have since moved out of the area that posted to Buy Nothing Pittsford about 9 months after the group started. The wife was getting rid of quite a bit of clothing. I reached out to her personally aside from the group and asked her if she needed any help. We ended up having coffee, and she shared her personal story about her health struggles and she and her husband were not in a state of health such that they could handle dealing with the things in their home. They had end-of-life plans, including moving to another country. A few of us decided to help her clean out her home and her things and help the couple downsize. Then, the BN Pittsford community rallied around this couple. Our members, their own neighbors, helped them clean out their home, ready it for sale, make their big move happen and achieve their end-of-life plan dreams. It organically grew into this beautiful, naturally reciprocal relationship of love and generosity,” says Stephanie, warmly. When looking to the future of BN Pittsford, Christine and Stephanie hope to encourage more “Gratitude Posts,” which simply express thankfulness, on the group page. They also plan to encourage members to gift more of themselves, their talents and their time. Stephanie believes this may be particularly needful on voting week and will work to encourage it then. “Several Monroe County communities have BN groups,” says Christine. “We encourage people to check their area and see if there is one to join. If there isn’t, start one!” Stephanie echoes this sentiment. “It is really rewarding. I love being a part of this. When Christine added me as an Admin, I was so excited! There is so much joy in giving and receiving and seeing people give and receive and knowing we are making a green impact, as well.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? to get their mail!!! Then leave them in the road to die!!! Just 1 example of the INSANITY on the roads today!!! Slow Down and L-I-V-E!!! Why does the [local town] Police Dept. publish all the people arrested in their weekly “Police Report”? I am honestly wondering why this is done. Driving today is scary! My opinion on this is BAN SUPER ENERGY DRINKS like they do alcohol!!! Think about it. Every convenience store has them as well as grocery stores etc. So, stop in and get your “Fix” so you can run over people just going out
Not a “vent” - not a “brighter” - just some suggestions. For the New Year: Try some patience, friendly smiles, helpfulness toward others. Please, thank you, excuse me - these all go a long way in dealing with
others. With so many problems in the world, we can all use a little peace & joy! I was recently sideswiped by a white box-type delivery truck. After the truck hit me, it continued down the road without stopping. There is over $5000 damage to my car. There were several witnesses to the accident, but no one stopped to ask if I needed help. I know there are several witnesses that could help to identify the truck. I guess this is where we are today. No one wants to get involved. It’s a sad day for this country. I took the family to the Capital over the holidays. At the Holocaust Museum
there are several exhibits of the concentration camps. While viewing a picture of children wearing prison uniforms, behind a wire fence, skinny and sickly looking, my 8-year-old turned to me and asked: “What did they do to be put in there?” The children in this camp were about my child’s age. I didn’t want him to fear that this could ever happen to him. I told him they didn’t do anything wrong. There were a lot of problems in the country and the leader didn’t want to be blamed, so he blamed outsiders: the Jews. He put them in the camps and let them die. Then my child asked: ”How could the good people let this happen?”
Brighter Side Congratulations to all the hardworking volunteers at the Henrietta Library Book Shop, the Shop is opening again and we can’t wait to see you all, we missed you. A special thanks to Adrienne and Brigid for making the reopening happen! I would like to tip my hat to outgoing Clarkson Town Supervisor Jerry Underwood. Jerry served his post with class, dignity and honor. Have you heard of any other Town Supervisors who would give up their first-year salary to keep their public library going? Or attend to a citizen’s concerns about road
repair and snow plowing? Or investigate energy sources that would be cheaper and cleaner for the Town? I wish Jerry all the best and that he will consider a future position in public service again. Many thanks to Rick Falker, Service Advisor at Bob Johnson Chevrolet, who provided such prompt and courteous service on my 2016 Malibu on January 10th. The Joseph Gallipeau Avon American Legion Post #294 would like tothank Avondale Pub, Town
of Avon and Avon Tops Friendly Markets for their continued support. Many thanks to Mike for helping us all out in the winter. He helps all of us during the storms, without pay, always with a smile. We don’t ask him, he just shows up!! Some of us older senior citizens really appreciate it. THANKS MIKE!! Scottsville and Wheatland and God Bless You, Your the job you people did this LeRoy neighborhood weekend was outstanding and enabled me to get my papers to I want to give a special my customers. I have lived and shout out to the Wheatland Highway Dept. for their great delivered papers here for years job keeping our roads clear and and your efforts are greatly passable during this latest storm. appreciated!! Thank you and I deliver newspapers throughout keep up the great work!!

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
STUDY WHAT YOU LOVE—ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS THE PATH TO SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT (NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch.
