HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
McMANUS CONSTRUCTION
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Lay down mulch. Mulch helps insulate and protect soil during summer, when soil can quickly dry out. When applied correctly (ideally before summer temperatures get too hot), mulch helps the soil conserve moisture and prevents weed growth. Weeds can rob soil of the water it needs to promote strong root systems, which can help plants get the nutrients they need to withstand summer heat. Mulched soils also do not experience the fluctuations in temperature that non-mulched soils can experience during summer heat waves, helping plants to grow evenly.

PEST CONTROL DID YOU KNOW?
Clip & Save
Clip & Save
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent. While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES
DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN
Makeup can help counter the look of dark shadows and pigmentation around the eyes. Use a shade that is opposite the color of the circles to camouflage them. For example, use orange-yellow tones to combat blue-purple shading under the eyes. Makeup artists also advise applying concealer in the shape of a triangle. That way a person is creating a light arrow that draws attention to the bright part of her eyes.
Apply - and reapply - sunscreen. Look for products that offer an SPF of 15 or greater. The American Academy of Dermatology actually recommends an SPF of 30 or greater. Make sure the product is broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen thoroughly, paying attention to the tops of feet, hands and other places that tend to go untreated. Reapply every two hours or more frequently, if necessary.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is It OK to Crush Pills? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know your opinion about whether it is OK to crush up different psychiatric medications and put them in a small container of water to drink. This doesn’t seem very safe to me, but I’d like an expert opinion. -- Anon. ANSWER: I’ll give you my answer, and also tell you where to find an expert opinion. My answer is that many people have trouble swallowing pills, and that most pills can be crushed and taken with water or mixed in with food. Your local pharmacy sells pill crushers, or you can get a mortar and pestle. While you are at the pharmacy, ask your pharmacist. He or she can look at your medications and tell you whether it is safe for you to crush your particular medications. Slow-release medications, of which there are many, should not be crushed. Often, the bottle will tell you, but ask your pharmacist for the expert opinion. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts about the MiraDRY procedure to get rid of underarm sweat? Is it safe not to have sweat under the arms? -- S.J. ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is not normal underarm sweating, but a rare condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis. According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness. This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www.sweathelp.org.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: What causes foot drop? Is there any cure for it? -- B.H. ANSWER: Foot drop is most commonly caused by damage to the peroneal nerve, which wraps around the fibula, one of the two bones of the leg (anatomically, only the lower leg is called the leg, as opposed to the thigh). The nerve can be damaged from trauma, such as during surgery or prolonged hospitalization. Leg casts and prolonged positioning with stress on the nerve, such as squatting, also can damage the nerve. Most people describe numbness but not pain, and the dropped foot can cause people to trip, so people with this condition learn to flex the hip to lift the thigh up higher. The diagnosis can be confirmed by electrical studies of the nerves. Treatment usually is to prevent further damage, with a splint to keep the foot flexed upward. A physical therapist can prescribe helpful exercises. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -- no, demand -- help with this problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually sure-footed Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of what’s right can inspire others if you remember not to push too hard to make your case. Moderation works best for you. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

32nd Annual Avon Corn Festival on Track to be the Best Yet ␣ For over thirty years, the Town of Avon has been delighting both community members and visitors from near and far with its Annual Rotary Corn Festival. Bringing the community together has been the key to its success from its early years until now. You may wonder what, other than the abundant corn produced in our local communities, inspired this festival? So did we. In 1986, the Avon Rotary, along with the Avon Lions Club, decided to start a festival to serve their community while bringing people together and giving local groups a way to help themselves. Each organization appointed three people to conduct a study and recommend a festival. One of these appointees suggested a corn festival, since he knew of a successful one elsewhere in New York. In the summer of 1986, Avon held its first Annual Corn Festival, and the rest, as they say, is history. This year, on Saturday, August 11th, the Annual Avon Rotary Corn Festival will extend for over two blocks along Genesee St. in Avon and is slated to draw anywhere from 5,00010,000 people. School “shuttle” buses, which are handicap accessible, will be available to transport visitors from parking areas to different stops along the festival route. “…We not only provide a fun and family-oriented day of entertainment, but [the festival] is also an opportunity for the Rotary and other area organizations to raise money for worthy causes,” Avon Rotary members share in their short article, “Why We Sponsor a Corn Festival.” This reflects the Rotary motto: Service Above Self. This service to others is demonstrated very well in the festival’s Kid Zone, a section of the festival filled with such kid-friendly entertainment as Gadgets the Clown, a bounce house, Mr. Scribbles and Cookies Songman. Many of the children’s activities start at 10AM and end at 2PM, so come right in and join the fun. Great entertainment is offered all day long on the festival’s three stages, with features such as local bands, dance performances, a corn eating contest and headliner Skycoasters free concert from 7pm-11pm. Also, a new game has been introduced to the event’s festivities: the Avon Cornhole-a-palooza Tournament. Registration and check-in are required. More information can be found on the Facebook page: Cornholea-palooza at the Avon Corn Fest. Over 100 arts & crafts vendors will also be providing a variety
of products, services and experiences ranging from health information to pickling & canning to jewelry. There is, quite literally, something for everyone. Another festival favorite, the food court, will be even bigger and better this year. Returning for its 32nd year, Lapressi’s Lemonade will be offering cool refreshment. The Rotary tent will be serving corn on the cob and salt potatoes while its fellow, original co-founder, the Lions Club will be dishing up a tasty chicken BBQ plate. Many more delectable food options will be available, served from tents, stands and food trucks alike. Offerings range from the everpopular corn fritters to gourmet grilled cheese, from fried ravioli to extravagant cotton candy and Amish baked goods, from savory to sweet, from homemade soda to craft brews. That’s right; brews, wines and ciders will be offered in this year’s brand-new Avon Rotary Beer Garden, set up next-door to the Avon Police Department, from 12pm-9pm Still, what is perhaps most appealing about the Avon Corn Fest is the sense of connection it brings, reconnecting with friends from near and far and the feeling that no matter where your travels have taken you, the Avon Corn Fest will always welcome you back with good fellowship, great music and delicious food. For more information, please visit the Avon Rotary website at www.avonrotary.org

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes.
Spacious 1 & 2 bedroom includes hot water + 24 hour emergency service, storage & laundry in each bldg. Cat friendly. Cable TV ready, A/C & gas heat. Walk to stores, library, etc.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.
Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

Different generations can learn and benefit from one another In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Finding renewed vigor Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another. Planning for the future Younger generations may not understand the concept of “hard times” or “doing without” like a person who has lived through various ups and downs. Passing along advice about economic cycles, saving for the future and maintaining stability is one area of expertise at which many seniors excel. Practicing interpersonal skills All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become

stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation. Learning new technology Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren’t ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets. Providing sense of purpose Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

To the family who has the cute little produce stand in the Village - we love having the convenient, friendly option to buy from you. Everything has been fresh and delicious. Thank you!
I'd like to thank GVPS for the Give and Take Column as nearly 30 people called me in response to the free garden plants ad I posted. I was unable to return all the phone calls but would like to thank all who responded to the ad.
Thank you to all our friends, family, co-workers and colleagues who have helped us get ready for “Baby Bedo.” We are truly blessed! -MK and NK
To the lovely person who left a Kitty Mug with a Showering Plant on my doorstep, I love it and I thank you! Nancy D.
On July 31st, I received a special surprise when another customer at Aldi's in Geneseo paid for my groceries. What a thoughtful and generous gesture!
The First Presbyterian Church of Livonia Chairpersons of the New 2 U Clothing Sale (Sept. 21 & 22) and Penny Social (Oct. 27th) would like to thank Susie Q.
To the farmer who thinks city people should stay in the city and not invade their precious country living I have this to say. You need to follow the same rules and laws that I have to in this state. You're not special. You don't get a pass. I worked all my life, I saved to
build and own property in the country. I paid taxes all my working life. I have never been tax exempt! I was NEVER paid not to work either. So you benefit from me paying taxes, then cry that we should move back into the city. I wasn't given farm property as an inheritance from my parents or grandparents either. Yes, you work and work hard, but so do I. Population is growing, it's a fact, so here's my sarcastic comment back...Either accept that your country is changing or perhaps YOU should move further out to farm. Hey, Smoky the Bear! Why don't you burn your putrid smelling garbage in your
Rescue and Dreamers Closet Consignment Sales for their very much appreciated donations to our sales! Although we’ve had a very dry summer, all the towns have beautiful flowers thanks to the faithful waterers. “In my neck of the woods” the hanging baskets and business’ flowers along Main Street in Livonia are so pretty. Also many thanks to those caring for beds in Vital Park, Long Point Park (and just south of the park) and Mart at Fortune Palace in Lakeville for his lovely garden. P.S. The hanging baskets are nice but I miss the tire planters at Briggs Tire.
fireplace inside your house instead of in your back yard late at night fouling the air of the entire neighborhood? What gives you the right to ruin the air everyone has to breathe? Especially people with asthma or COPD trying to get some fresh air only to encounter remnants of your foul smelling garbage odor that has invaded their open doors and windows and permeated the entire house. I asked the Town Supervisor it if was legal to burn garbage in a back yard. His bizarre answer was 1) open burning of garbage/ trash fires is not allowed, but, 2) burning garbage/trash fires in an urn or container is allowed. Duh? Maybe we will get lucky and it will rain,
As usual, this year’s summer programs for the children at the Livonia Public Library were just wonderful. Seems the adults enjoyed each one as much as the kids! Many thanks to the staff! and Smoky will disappear for a long time. To the person or people who took my 2 year old little girl's backpack in the parking lot of the [local church] on July 4th, I hope you enjoy my 2 year old's things, her baby blanket, her diapers and her tablet. She was asking for her things the rest of the night and will continue to for weeks. You are disgusting, and it is a shame you could not just turn it in to lost and found. She says you stole it, and even she understands you are disgusting and rotten.

COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Playing with food: Grilling does not require much intervention. Repeatedly flipping and squeezing meat and poultry can cause flavorful juices to leak out. Then you’re left with dried-out food. Resist any urges to prod and poke food. And minimize how many times you lift the grill cover to take a peek, as that can cause temperatures to fluctuate. Use a thermometer to determine when food is done. And don’t forget that meat will still cook a bit after it’s taken off the grill.

A heartfelt thank you for all the kindness and support at the time of our loss of our loved one Donald P. Schunk. “There is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials…” ~ Lin Yutang
Perhaps the greatest thief of our time is the notion that we must attend to all the countless little petty tasks that confront us daily. We try to take them in order, complete them if possible and hope for the day when we will have a little time for more important things. What would happen if we simply left the trivial chores undone? If we eliminated the non-essentials, we might find time for more important activity. We might even have time for that long-delayed self-improvement project. It is our belief that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience to remember. It should aid the bereaved in their difficult adjustment to loss.
The Family of
Donald P. Schunk Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
THE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross was a Swiss-American psychiatrist whose book On Death and Dying (1969) discussed her theory of the five stages of grief. The first of these, “denial,” helps individuals survive a loss that, initially, seems overwhelming. The second necessary stage of the grieving process is “anger,” which helps us dissipate pain. Fortunately, our anger subsides as we heal. Next, grieving individuals might engage in “bargaining,” which involves asking “what if” or declaring “if only” in attempts to make a pact with God to stave off death. Then, there is “depression,” in which our grief deepens. Finally, there is “acceptance.” While each stage is a necessary part of grieving, the order in which they are reached varies with each person. Keep in mind that grief doesn’t follow a neat progression of stages. It’s a complicated and personal thing. In addition to providing burial services, cremation services, memorial services, and celebrations of life, funeral homes also serve as resources for those grieving the loss of a loved one. CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized. C. Thomas Moran “T” “Bompa” August 4, 2018 Avon: Tragically on August 4, 2018 at age 66. Predeceased by his parents Charlie & Marion Moran. Survived by his loving partner of over 20 years Connie Ryan and children; Traci (Dominick) D’Alessandro of Deer Park, NY, Kathryn “Katie” (Chad) Smith of Livonia, Matthew (Danielle) Moran of Avon, Peter “Rock” (Rebecca) Ryan of Avon, and Jessica (Adam) Soucy of Avon; grandchildren, Gianna, Joseph, and Michael D’Alessandro, Aidan and Jack Smith, Christopher, Connor, and Emma Moran, Jack and Owen Johnston, and Finnegan Soucy; siblings, Patty Moran of Lima, Molly (Paul) Korndoerfer of Conesus Lake, and Liz (John) Prinzi of CO; also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Tom will be so missed by everyone that knew him including their beloved dogs, Hunter and Izzy. Tom was a 42-year Member of the Avon Lions Club, serving twice as its President, and being so honored by his peers as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest recognition afforded any Member. He embodied the Club’s “We Serve” mantra, unselfishly giving of his time and talent at the Club’s Barbeque fundraisers, Children’s Halloween Party or Easter Egg Hunt, Medical Loan Closet for Senior Citizens, Sports night recognizing High School Athletes, collecting used eye glasses for recycling, Speech and Hearing Clinics held in area schools, and Patriot Project decorating US Flags along the streets of Avon. His enthusiasm was infectious, as was his easy-going good nature and constant smile. Tom’s record of service includes Avon Community Cares, Avon Food Pantry, Avon Little League, Avon Sports Boosters, and Avon “Welcome Home” Project. In business, he expanded Duffy’s Irish Pub and relocated it to the historic Erie Depot Railroad Station, a site where his Great Grandfather began his Livery business. Ever proud to be Irish, Tom represented Avon as he led the Duffy’s float & crew in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. T-Mo was a long standing member of the Livingston Country Club where he was a past board member and also won many golf tournaments. Recently he had his first hole in one. Tom was a dedicated employee of the Village of Avon Public Works Department for over 40 years, taking on increasing roles of responsibilities throughout his career. He was the first Plant Manager for Avon’s multi-million dollar Water Filtration Plant. For eight years into his retirement, he continued his service with part-time work in support of the water department. He was a highly respected coworker, mentor, and a beloved friend to everyone with whom he worked. In his retirement, Tom remained active in helping those Senior citizens still living on their own in his beloved hometown, checking on their safety and welfare during sever weather events, and providing mowing and plowing service to many. Known to his friends as “T”, he had trouble saying “no”. Friends called on Wednesday, August 8th, from 4-7pm and Thursday, August 9th, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. Tom’s Funeral Mass was held on Friday, August 10th, 10:30am at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 96 Prospect Street, Avon, NY. Burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery, Avon, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in T’s Memory to the Avon Lions Club, PO Box 293, Avon, NY 14414. Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity. Andrew J. Schwan August 4, 2018 Andrew J. MON.-FRI. 6-11 AM 244 East Main St. • Avon Peppermintsrestaurant.com (585) 226-2707 Backyard Maintenance Tips For Summer (NAPS)—Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues! Before your guests arrive, check these four backyard maintenance tasks off your to-do list to ensure your yard is looking good. Clean Your Barbecue To prevent food from sticking to your barbecue grills, rub cooking oil on the grates before you start. After you’re done barbecuing, use warm, soapy water to clean the grates with a wire brush. Give Outdoor Furniture a Pick-Me-Up With all furniture, check for wear and tear that may have occurred during winter. Clean plastic furniture and chair or couch cushions simply with a cloth or soft scrub brush dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent. Some outdoor cushions can be thrown in the washer so check the tags. Check Power Equipment Since power equipment most likely hasn’t been used in months, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. Some equipment may need to be lubricated to run smoothly again. Easily lubricate the moving parts of a lawn mower with WD-40 EZ-REACHTM. It has an 8-inch, flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape to get WD-40® Multi-Use Product into hard-to-reach places, like in and around the blade. Tidy Up Your Lawn Trim large plants, hedges and bushes that had a growth spurt during the spring, and remove dead limbs from trees. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters around your home, and remove weeds from the lawn and garden. You may need to reseed some areas of your lawn as well. With the completion of these four tasks, guests will be enjoying your backyard barbecues all summer long. To see how WD-40 EZ-REACH can help you tackle other outdoor maintenance projects, visit WD40.com.

ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a worklife balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide up the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your well-being. Quiet time at home in the morning can be a prime time to fit in a workout or catch up on paperwork.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.
