The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Learn to downsize before a move Aging men and women often take inventory of their lives in an effort to focus on activities or lifestyle changes that can ensure happy retirements. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows there are some 76 million baby boomers — those people born between 1946 to 1964 — across the country. With the youngest of the boomers in their mid-50s and the majority having already reached retirement age, many boomers are trying to decide if it’s time to move out of their family homes and into smaller, more manageable abodes. Many older adults find they do not need the same amount of space as they did when they had children living at home. Retirees and those on the cusp of retirement may find that downsizing is a smart financial move that frees up more time for recreation. However, it can be challenging to cut down on living space and then deal with figuring out how to make furniture, belongings and stored items fit in more condensed areas. Moving can be stressful even without having to cut down on prized items. Taking an inventory of belongings can help the process go smoothly. Before moving, men and women can go room by room, making piles of items that will be kept, donated, sold, or discarded. This can be a tedious task, but it is necessary to avoid clutter in a new home. People downsizing can attempt to sell items they do not need via newspaper classified sections or online classified sites. Appliances and furniture in excellent shape may fetch good prices. Any extra cash can be put toward buying new items that are size-appropriate for the smaller home. Another way to clear out clutter is to sort duplicates from the stock of items. A person may no longer need multiple sets of dishes or silverware. If the move involves switching from a kingsized to a queen-sized bed, donate or trash bed linens that will no longer fit. Pay close attention to kitchen and bathroom items,
which tend to accumulate over time but might not be discarded when clearing a home of clutter. People moving from a detached home to a condominium or a townhouse may learn that homeowner’s association fees cover everything from snow removal to lawn maintenance to pool upkeep. If so, it’s unnecessary to bring lawn and garden supplies. Homeowners are advised to look at the floor plan of their new dwellings and pay attention to storage space. This can make it easier to plan ahead for what may fit, what will need to be purchased new and which storage solutions may be needed. Having a plan in place can make unpacking and settling in go smoothly. The organizing company Organize Me says that homeowners should consider how cabinets and closets will be used before moving in. Downsizing can free up time and money. When done right, downsizing can make retirement easier and create more leisure time for retirees.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Eating Leaves Mouth With Sour Taste --DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife, age 70, complains frequently of a sour taste in her mouth soon after eating. I thought she had esophageal reflux, but I did not find that sour taste is one of the symptoms. She has no heartburn, but the taste occasionally improves after taking an antacid. -- B.P. ANSWER: Gastroesophageal reflux disease can have no symptoms, or many. Sour taste is, in fact, a common symptom. This is the “reflux” of the condition’s name, since it refers to the backward movement of stomach acid -- all the way into the back of the throat or even into the mouth. Heartburn is perhaps the most common symptom, but so is difficulty swallowing. This is more common in people with longstanding symptoms. Antacids neutralize the acid in the stomach but do not prevent the reflux of stomach contents. Widely prescribed medications, including H2 blockers like Zantac or Pepcid (“H2” is a type of histamine receptor, a stimulus for acid production) and proton pump inhibitors (like Prilosec or Nexium, which directly reduce acid secretion), also act on the acid in the stomach, and do not reduce reflux. In order to reduce reflux, I recommend eating smaller meals, not reclining for two to three hours after eating, losing weight if appropriate and avoiding products that weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve-like muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. Alcohol and tobacco are the biggest offenders. Raising the head of the bed (traditionally with a brick, but foam wedges also are good) uses gravity to help the refluxed acid get out of the esophagus. Reducing reflux or acid at night is most important. While the body is in a horizontal position, the acid can stay longer in the esophagus and cause damage.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am very concerned about my 81-year-old sister. She is 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 78 pounds. This is a new low weight for her. She recently had bloodwork done and was told she has an underactive thyroid and should take medication for it. She also has a colon problem and COPD. I thought that with an underactive thyroid, you gained weight, not lost. Can you explain the difference between underactive and overactive thyroid? -- C.K. ANSWER: The thyroid gland in the neck produces thyroid hormone, which affects every tissue in the body. People with an underactive gland (called hypothyroid) tend to gain weight, may have dry skin, and slow bowel movements, and can be lethargic or sluggish. People with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroid) usually are the opposite: full of energy, thin and intolerant of heat. The diagnosis is confirmed by blood tests of thyroid levels. However, these common conditions occasionally look very different from the normal. I have seen people with severe hyperthyroidism be lethargic to the point of apathy. Weight gain or loss isn’t inevitable with thyroid disease. However, with severe COPD, weight loss is almost universal. The COPD may be a bigger contributor to her weight loss. But with a body mass index of 16.3, she is dangerously underweight and needs further evaluation and treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Be Aware of Ticks When Enjoying the Outdoors When the weather warms, yards beckon, hiking trails look even more inviting and even a patch of grass can be a welcoming respite. Lots of fun can be had outside, but caution is needed. While this time of year is prime for outdoor frolicking, it’s also a time when tick populations explode. Ticks are small crawling bugs in the arachnid (spider) family. There are hundreds of different kinds of ticks in the world. The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation says there are at least 40 species of ticks in Canada alone. The creature subsists on meals of blood from a host animal. Ticks can carry bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that can cause serious disease in humans and other animals, according to LymeDisease.org. Ticks feed and mate mostly on deer, but rodents, birds, lizards, and just about any other animal can be a host to these nondiscriminatory bugs. Animals carry the diseases, which are then passed through the tick to others. Disease-spreading ticks can be extremely hard to detect because of their diminutive size, especially when they are in the larva or nymph stages. Therefore, preventing tick bites remains the single-best way to stay ahead of Lyme disease and other illnesses. Understanding tick habitats and behavior can make it easier to avoid them. Ticks will congregate anywhere the animals they feed upon live. Primarily they are located in wooded and grassy areas. Adults will climb up on tall grass waiting for an animal to pass by so they can climb aboard. Nymphs and larvae will live in layers of decomposing leaves under trees. Moisture is a friend to ticks, which are less active in sunny, dry areas. Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says removing leaf litter, clearing tall grasses and brush and mowing the lawn frequently can help.
Wearing long pants and sleeves and tall socks can discourage ticks from latching on when people are enjoying the outdoors.
Here are some additional ways to create tick-safe zones at home: • Stack wood neatly in a dry area. • Keep playground equipment and entertaining spaces away from trees and yard edges. • Discourage unwanted animals with fencing. • Prevent tick migration into yards with a three-foot-wide barrier of gravel between lawns and wooded areas. • If desired, employ acaricides (tick pesticides) to reduce the number of ticks in your yard. When enjoying the great outdoors, avoid tall grasses and stay on trails. Wear tall socks or pants during hikes to prevent ticks from latching on. A thorough inspection of the body is advisable each time people return indoors. Check hidden areas, such as behind the knees, under the arms and in other skin-fold areas, for ticks. Tick populations grow as the weather warms. Ensure spring and summer fun is not dampened by tick-related illness.

In preparation for the June 1st acceptance of girls into their membership, The Boy Scouts of America announced that it will drop the “boy” from its namesake program and become known as Scouts BSA. What is your opinion of the move to accept girls into the organization? • Girls have their own organization – The Girl Scouts – with programs tailored to their interests. That is the group girls should belong to. • All children should have access to the same opportunities regardless of gender. • Merge the two scouting groups, that will solve the problem! The families that own Knuckleheads Craft Brewery, in West Webster, put on a fundraiser for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation this past Tuesday. Ten different small craft breweries donated beer and other establishments donated food and prizes. Knuckleheads raised over 6,000! Everything brought in, including tips, went right to fighting CF. Knuckleheads definitely deserves a lot of praise! You hear a lot of talk today about how the generation coming of age now are spoiled and self-centered and apathetic. I attended a dinner last month to honor student volunteers from a local college, and I want to say that I was so impressed by the caring and selflessness of these young
If you are any driver who chooses to cruise through the stop sign, there is a STOP sign there. You do NOT have the immediate right of way. Plus, that corner is also a school bus stop. I admire them tremendously and think we could all take a page from their book. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and attended the annual Women's Day Breakfast. A special thank you to those who also brought donations for Chances and Changes a shelter for battered and abused women and children and homeless. We had a sold out number of guests and they donated a full carload of items for the shelter. Our guest speaker Karen Tremmer did an outstanding presentation about the shelter and who and how it

As it was clear they had no intention to move, I was forced to stop and then drive behind the group while they snuck dirty looks over their shoulders. Eventually, the group parted and moved out of the road, but not without obscenities and vulgar hand gestures. My son now has a lovely cell phone picture of a woman we recognize giving him the finger. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you might prefer moving forward at a steady pace, it might be a good idea to stop and reassess your plans. You could find a good reason to make a change at this time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Just when you thought you had everything planned to the smallest detail, you get some news that could unsettle things. But a timely explanation helps put it all back on track. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home and work continue to compete for your attention. But you handle it well by giving each its proper due. Someone you trust offers valuable advice. Listen to it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Unsettling news creates a difficult but not impossible situation. Continue to follow your planned routine, but keep your mind open to a possible change down the line. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Lick your wounded pride if you like, but it’s a better idea to find out why your suggestions were rejected. What you learn could help you deal with an upcoming situation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Feeling a bit listless? No wonder. You might be pushing too hard to finish everything on your to-do list. Cutting it down could help get your energy levels up. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Taking time out of your busy schedule might be the best way to handle that sensitive private matter. It will help reassure everyone involved about your priorities. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Insist on full disclosure by all parties before agreeing to be part of a “great deal.” What you learn should help you decide whether to go with it or not. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your decision to protect the secret that was entrusted to you might irk some people. But it also wins you the admiration of those who value trust and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Creative activities take on a practical approach as you realize you might be able to market your work. Ask for advice from someone experienced in this area. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) If you’re suddenly a bit unsure about your decision, ask trusted colleagues and/or friends or family members for suggestions that could help resolve your doubts. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A workplace situation could get stormy. But stay on course until there’s a solution that meets with everyone’s approval, and things can finally calm down. Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
MAKING A FINAL SWEEP In addition to drawing up our wills and making funeral prearrangements, Swedish artist and author Margareta Magnusson believes that we should help smooth the transition surrounding our eventual demise by taking at least one more important step. In her book, “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” Ms. Magnusson advocates that people declutter their homes and get rid of unnecessary possessions before they die so that their children will not be burdened with the task of sorting through a lifetime of things. By performing this late-in-life task, parents help their children avoid the perplexing task of trying to decide what their parents would have wanted them to save and where to store these items. According to the author, getting rid of stuff is a way to bring order to chaos. It is a permanent form of organization that makes your everyday life run more smoothly. Another thing you can do to help your loved ones is to pre-plan your funeral. Preplanning your service allows loved ones to spend time supporting each other instead of worrying about what you would have wanted. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to silence.” ~ Oscar Wilde
