A special thanks to the Brockport Elks Lodge for hosting and working the Linda Clifford Memorial Jamboree. A special shout out to Sue Barton and the Elks Riders for an outstanding job in the parking lot, ticket line and all around help. What a fine job the kitchen did on food for the show and the bar and so many others. Thank you to Kathy Dishong for spending the day taking pictures for all to see. I want to acknowledge the outstanding job done by the entertainers: Boone’s Farm Band, Terry Buchwald tribute to the King, Happy the Clown, Ruby Shooz.

Again thanks to the Jazzercize girls for bringing fun and beauty to the memorial. Thank you for those who made baskets. Again I want to give a special shout out for all those who attended the memorial jamboree. Without you the jamboree would not have been such a success. I want to give a special thanks to my partner Linda Stephens who spends so much of her time helping me with this event. I don’t know how she does it. Thank you, Linda Stephens.

Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. Listen - People tend to forget at least half of what they hear in the doctor’s office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they’ve heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit. Taking notes - Companions can jot down important notes about the appointment, such as dates and times for follow-up visits, medication advice and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargon-heavy language of a physician
into an understandable language the patient can fully understand. Medical history - Sometimes a companion can be a useful resource, calling a doctor’s attention to a patient’s prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking. Serving as an advocate - Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn’t clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light. Translation - Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

THIS SPRING, IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS FISHING -AND YOUR BASIC GEAR COVER YOUR HEAD. Hats w ith a hard-hat liner w ill keep your neck, ears and head w arm in c old w eather. For w armer climates, a w ide-brimmed hat w ill guard against sunburn, overheating and overexposure. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your creative side is enhanced by indulging yourself in as much artistic inspiration (music, art, dance, etc.) as you can fit into your schedule. Bring someone special along. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take a little restorative time out of your busy life. Go somewhere quiet this weekend. Or just close the door, turn on the answering machine and pretend you’re away. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your advice might be much in demand by family and friends this week. But reserve time for yourself to investigate a project that could have some unexpected potential. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Workrelated issues demand your attention in the early part of the week. Family matters dominate Thursday and Friday. But the weekend is yours to spend as you please. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your temper in check as you deal with someone who seems to enjoy showing disrespect. Losing your Leonine cool might be just what the goader hopes to see. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A heated confrontation needs some cool-off time before it boils over. Better to step away than to try to win an argument where emotions overrule the facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone very special in your life finally sends that reassuring message you’ve been hoping for. You can now devote more time to the tasks you had put aside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Job pressures begin to ease by week’s end, leaving you time to relax and restore your energy levels before you face next week’s emerging challenges. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your spiritual strength helps calm a friend who might be facing an unsettling change in their life. An offer to help comes from a surprising source. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) By midweek you could learn some surprising facts about an associate that might cause you to reconsider a long-held view about someone in your past. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) One of those rare-for-you darker moods sets in in the early part of the week. But by Thursday, the clouds lift and you’re back doing nice things for people in need. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use that sharp Piscean perceptiveness to reel in more information about a promising offer so that you have the facts to back up whatever decision you make. ENJOY FRESH, SEASONAL FOODS. Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives. The vivid colors and smells emanating from farmers’ markets indicate just how fresh and nutritious the offerings tend to be. Farmers who peddle their wares at farmers’ markets adhere to careful farming methods to ensure their foods are as nutritious as possible.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vegan Does Not Need Fish to be Healthy --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been vegan for 15 years. I avoid sugar, limit salt and have no caffeine. Recently, a pharmacist told me that I will not get proper protein unless I add fish to my diet. However, long ago, my doctor told me that my vegan diet was good and that I should take vitamin B-12 daily, which I have been doing. What are your thoughts on adding fish? -- S.N. ANSWER: I agree with your doctor. A vegan diet can be very healthy, and avoiding sugar in particular helps assure that it is. The issue of adequate protein is brought up frequently, but most Americans consume more than twice the recommended daily allowance of protein. Plant foods have plenty of protein, and you certainly do not need to eat fish in order to get adequate protein. I think fish can be a healthy part of a diet, but it is not necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital several months ago with poor heart function and only 10 percent kidney function. He has been on dialysis three times a week since then. We have been inquiring for several months about his current kidney function, and we cannot get an answer. We are just curious as to whether there has been any improvement. -- S.K. ANSWER: Dialysis is a way of replacing kidney function when the kidneys can no longer remove enough of the body’s waste materials. It sounds like your husband is on hemodialysis, where the blood is run through a machine that removes excess fluid and waste products, such as creatinine and potassium, which would otherwise increase in concentration in the blood. High potassium is life-threatening, and creatinine, though not dangerous, is the molecule we look at most commonly to estimate kidney function. Very rarely, kidney function can return even after a prolonged time on dialysis. I have never seen a case, but one study showed two cases per thousand where dialysis could be stopped. The clue that kidney function was returning was that urine output, which normally is scant while on hemodialysis, had increased over time. Unfortunately, 99.8 percent of the time, the kidney failure is permanent. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old male, and I have been heavy for most of my life. Over the past 18 months, I have lost a great deal of weight and feel better than I have in years. My issue is where the excess has ended up: just below my belt-line. I know that so-called spot reducing doesn’t work, so I’m at a loss as to how to go about getting rid of this paunch. It’s not above my belt, and it is stubborn. Any ideas? -- T.C. ANSWER: If you keep losing weight, odds are that stubborn fat will gradually go away. High-intensity aerobic exercise did seem to help in one study. I have had patients undergo liposuction, but that helps your appearance, not your overall health. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES Teaching: Retirees can also put their professional experience to work in the classroom. Inquire about teaching opportunities at a nearby university or even the local high school. Such opportunities may only be available on a volunteer basis, but some might pay part-time salaries or small stipends. Either way, many retirees find that working with young people helps them stay young, and passing on lessons learned to younger generations can provide a strong sense of purpose.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
