DID YOU KNOW? Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to commit to 12-month memberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predetermined number of times in a specific time frame (i.e., 50 visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.

Hearty stew s and belly-w arming soups are coming out of the kitchens; frost is sparkling, and w inter jackets are coming out of hiding. Families are craving slow -cooked, savory meals that yield health benefits and leftovers. Delicious, savory w inter-recipe ingredients that w ill surely satisfy are w hite beans and Oso Sw eet Onions, an onion grow n at the foot of the Andes M ountains. Onions are not only believed to be a cancer preventative, their low -salt, low -fat health benefits are the proactive equivalent to superhero pow ers. Onions have 25 compounds that low er blood pressure and cholesterol, prevent thrombosis, inhibit strokes and battle heart disease, says the American Heart Association. Plus, the antioxidants and flavonoids found in onions don’t lose their potency once cooked. This makes them ideal for slow -cooked recipes. They add a punch of flavor and a w hopping serving size, making them an affordable luxury during the chilly w inter months.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy CAN ASPIRIN REVERSE TOOTH DECAY? A recent finding by scientists may help to further bolster aspirin’s reputation as a “wonder drug” with multiple potential benefits. While aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) has been used for many years as a painkiller, new research suggests that it may also reverse the effects of tooth decay. According to initial research, aspirin has been found to have the ability to stimulate stem cells in teeth, thereby enhancing tooth regeneration. While teeth are able to produce a thin layer of “dentin” (the layer beneath the enamel), it is not enough to repair a large cavity. If researchers can find ways to develop treatments using aspirin that help teeth repair themselves, fillings may become a thing of the past. Because the field of dentistry is ever-changing, at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we never
consider our training to be complete. We believe that quality care requires constant, continuing education. Our patients trust us with their care, so we feel we owe it to them to share the knowledge we have learned and provide the most up-to-date treatment available. For personalized attention from dedicated specialists, we offer comprehensive dental care for the family at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. Today’s tooth-colored composite resins used to fill cavities not only look better than amalgam (silver) fillings, but they are far less resistant to shrinkage.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Non-Stop Music Only He Can Hear It’s a fact that you already know. A mammogram can find lumps in the breast long before they are found any other way. A mammorgram only takes minutes. If you are uninsured and 40-64 years old, it’s FREE. So, what’s stopping you from calling right now?

M OMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 23, 1957, the Wham-O toy company roll out the first batch of aerodynamic plastic discs now known as Frisbees. The Frisbee began in Connecticut in 1871 when university students would toss empty Frisbie Pie Company tins to each other.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I hear music playing in my head at all times. I can’t stop it, even if I’m reading, having a conversation or being active. It’s there when I wake up in the night or in the morning. Even if I consciously stop it and try to hear only the ambient sounds around me, the music always comes back. Is this indicative of any major problems? I am a very healthy 64year-old male, and this is annoying. It has been going on for most of my life. I wonder if a psychiatrist could help. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head. One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessivecompulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders. However, my experience is that there are many, many normal people with no psychiatric illness who have music playing in their head almost all the time or all the time. Many people have had a song stuck in their head (often called an “earworm”), but a few people have this continuously. I had one patient in whom this was a major source of distress, and in that case, it appeared to be related to the use of an antidepressant. Solving anagrams and reading are supposed to help, but in your case I am almost sure that would be temporary. Sometimes playing the music that is in your head can stop it. There are a few case reports of treatment with medication (such as carbamazepine) being effective, but sometimes reassurance that this is almost normal makes it easier to deal with. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? -- K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of. In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous. You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed. Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question. Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent. Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. HOW ART BENEFITS YOUNG BRAINS Art can positively affect how students approach other courses. Studies have shown that incorporating arts into core curriculums can have a number of positive effects on students’ overall academic performance and benefit students socially. Studies indicate that students involved in such integrative programs are more emotionally invested in their classes and work more diligently than those not studying in such conditions. In addition, students may learn more from one another when the arts are integrated into core curriculums than when they are not.

And ANTIQUES DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Practice self-control in all aspects of life. Some researchers believe that the self-control necessary to help people maintain their resolutions is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. When selfcontrol is revved up across many different activities, it’s easy to realize one particular resolution. For example, in an experiment at the University of Albany, researchers asked 122 smokers who were trying to quit to practice extra self-control for two weeks, either by avoiding sweets or by squeezing on a grip strengthener for as long as they could twice a day. Twenty-seven percent of those who were diligent about practicing their self-control exercise successfully kicked their cigarette habit in the following month, compared with just 12 percent of volunteers who didn’t maximize self-control.

Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Autumn Jeffery as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout By Susan Cook
Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Autumn Jeffery of Caledonia, NY as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Jeffery’s project was to build two Little Free Libraries to support the community, which has insufficient access to a public library. Caledonia Library has limited hours and the nearby town of York does not have a public library at all. Jeffery researched the project and collected donations of building materials and books, as well as met with local businesses to find a location to put Little Free Library locations. Jeffery sorted the donated books, built and assembled the libraries herself, installing one at the Cal-Mum Elementary School and the other at the York Elementary School where she gave a speech about citizenship. Jeffery stated, “I am proud to be a Gold Award Girl Scout. But to me, the real reward in all of this is that I have made a positive impact in my community and I have helped others.” Jeffery has been a Girl Scout for 13 years. She will receive her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, at the Gold Award Ceremony in June. The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a girl can be passionate about – in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be ongoing or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind
2018 Gold Award Girl Scout Autumn Jeffery of Caledonia
each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing. To learn more about the Girl Scouts of Western New York please visit gswny.org.

Safety renovations for seniors’ homes Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women. Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger. As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery times. The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are admitted to the emergency room for injuries every year. People concerned about the safety of their homes or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer. Falls According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year. In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and high-traffic areas can help seniors stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.
HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping. Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motion-activated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary. A nightlight or LED lights placed near molding can help guide seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits. Physical limitations Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools. Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots. Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals. Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible. Smart Homes Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones. Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.
SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can avoid injury but still get healthy.

To the students and parents of Attica bus 111, Thank you for the cards and gifts for Christmas. The homemade chocolate covered pretzels are very good. Thank you. Mr. Jeff Thank you so much to the Livonia Fire Department for pumping out my flooded cellar and to the Volunteer Ambulance crew who took my 18 month old grandson to the hospital when he had a serious case of croup. You saved his life. We in Livonia are so fortunate to have such great people who serve in our community, especially the firefighters and ambulance crews. Keep up the good work and a big THANK YOU! I want to thank the couple who helped me and the 3 kids I had in my vehicle when I accidentally crashed my car on Union Street in
Ogden. You stopped to see if we were all ok and allowed the kids and me to sit in your blue Jeep in the heat to stay warm. I really appreciate your help and your kind hearts to allow us to stay warm on this bitter cold day on New Year’s Eve. I wish I received your names and address to thank you personally. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
donors. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-to-day operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special I want to give a huge thank you thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are to the person or persons that found my Discover credit card in blessed to live in such a caring community. the Aldi's parking lot on 12/27/ 17. I almost had a heart attack when I couldn't find it when I went to Walmart. I drove back to Aldi's and low and behold someone had found it. I will never put it in my pocket again. I wish you the best of 2018, I'm so grateful. room to ease my car backwards and across the street to a parking lot. He held my arm as we carefully crossed the slippery road to his car, and then drove me to my appointment a few blocks away! God is great--and so were you, Chris!
Slipping and sliding, unable to get my car under control to make it up the icy incline on Gravel Road in W. Webster, several drivers sat waiting too close behind me or passed by as the light turned green a few times. Feeling hopeless and helpless being late for an appointment, my prayers were answered with the The Teresa House Board of arrival of an angel who gave his Directors, Staff and Volunteers name as Chris Brown. He was able would like to send many thanks to to stop the traffic, giving him all of our 2017 Annual Campaign
elsewhere should be built instead of having this in a residential area? To the Bus Driver responding to the post about lights flashing confusion: I think you misread my post. I wasn't speeding up to the bus. I was slowing down waiting for the reds to come on. I was confused and not sure what to do as they did not come on until I was at the front fender of the bus. I am asking that bus drivers don't Is there anyone within earshot of wait until the last second to turn the [local] shooting range that is on the reds. And I was disgusted disturbed by the daily shooting? that the blame was then put on Does everyone realize that this type me when they beeped the horn at of noise pollution MUST be me. They did not use that horn to disclosed when selling your house or warn the students as they were you could be liable? Maybe after dropping off kids as the bus was decades of use, an indoor facility on not even stopped yet. And I never the [local college] campus or said anything about my "precious"
time. I was not in a hurry, only confused. Next time I'll stop at the yellow lights....only to get rearended I'm sure. To the older "gentleman" whom we were unfortunate enough to sit by at our favorite restaurant. Not everyone appreciates hearing how you "severed the aorta" of a deer you shot from your tree stand. My wife and I had to sit there and listen as you described what was evidently a thrilling experience for you, all the while eating our vegetarian lunch that is usually a highlight of our week. I would expect this behavior from a twenties-something guy in [a fast food restaurant]--not a senior citizen in a sit-down establishment, where I assure you
that no one wants to hear about you bagging a trophy buck. Since you were the only one talking at your table, I can only assume that even your family was annoyed. Have a little class, hit the fast food joint, or better yet, stay home and eat by yourself. It is absolutely incredulous that if someone were to be caught by a police officer throwing a candy wrapper out the car window that they would be subject to a $350 fine in New York State, yet people in a supposedly upscale neighborhood in this town routinely place loose trash and recyclables out in 30 MPH winds to turn their neighborhood into a ‘royal’ mess. Is there no town ordinance that can address this issue?

Emphasize time management. Hectic schedules can quickly derail resolutions. Many people want to eat healthier and exercise more but find their time is stretched pretty thin, which can make it difficult to get to the gym or prepare healthy meals at home. Finding ways to manage time more effectively can make it easier to stay committed to New Year’s resolutions. Right down your daily schedule and look for ways to free up time. If you routinely take an hour for lunch each day, use that time to exercise and eat at your desk when you return from your walk, workout or jog. Try to wake up 30 to 60 minutes earlier each morning to exercise, and make use of time before bed by preparing a healthy lunch for the following day.

Networking is often seen as a means to further one’s career, but developing a group of professional contacts can also be a great way for professionals to stay abreast of the trends in their particular fields. Networking also can benefit small businesses as they look to connect with vendors that can help them grow their businesses. A strong professional network is not built overnight, and many professionals spend years nurturing relationships with people in their networks. Individuals and business owners can take several approaches when building professional networks they will rely on for years to come.
