Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

The m any benef it s of aut om ot ive roof rack s Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Recently my husband and I went to a coffee shop in our town where there are many of these franchise/locations. We have our favorites. Recently we went thru the drive-thru and ordered our regular drinks – 1 coffee and 1 iced coffee. We were treated with such disrespect by the young girl at the window. This young girl brought my husband lukewarm coffee. When he told her he needed it heated up she
Thanks also to Highway Supt Mark David, and to Colby’s and Montesano's for lunch! A most heartfelt thank you to Dr. Bob Lann at Cats Exclusively Veterinary Hospital in Pittsford and his wonderful staff for their longtime care and support of our cat, Patches. On May 7, Dr. Lann quietly and patiently confirmed that we were making the tough but right decision to say a final goodbye to our 20-year-old girl. They made the process as gentle and loving as possible that day and Dr. Lann followed-up with a lovely handwritten note as well as a donation to a local rescue group in her honor. We are grateful to all. The Smiths
said she had a long line of people to wait on and that it would have to do. When my drink came out it was iced milk, not iced coffee. I complained enough that she took mine back put her hands all over the top of the cup, held the straw and added flavor. To be honest it grossed me out. I asked her to please make me a fresh one. She refused! My husband and I ran out of time but later in the day my husband called the store and spoke to the manager who was horrified by her employee’s behavior. All we're saying – Respect and kindness go a long way. Can someone explain to me why, at a 4 way stop, everyone takes turns to cross or turn. Why then, at a 2 way stop, the driver across from you assumes they have the right of way because they are crossing the intersection straight and not turning. I stopped, waited for about 5 cars to go, and then made my left. As
I am compelled to write my following words of praise for a remarkable aquatic teacher in Webster, Carol Cuomo. Why? Week after week Carol approaches her classes of 20 or more with innovative ideas, classes which challenge us, and a smile, always, from here to there! Often in life, we think positive thoughts for someone who we know deserves our applause, but I'm writing today for each of her students who feel the same way. Yesterday, in a huge downpour, every lady showed up! Thank you, Carol Cuomo for your hard work and caring. You are worth your weight (and more!) in gold. Phenomenal Event!! My husband and I attended "Glass Half Full TEDxHFLHighSchool" on
I turned, another car, who just pulled up, laid on their horn because they felt I had to wait for them first. I've asked AAA instructors and police officers who has the right of way. All I get is...the car to your right??? What does that mean? I'm at a stop sign; there is no car on my right. If they are traveling through and don't have a stop sign, that's different. The hand book for learner's permits don't address this either.
Saturday. Congratulations to students, staff, speakers and sponsors for putting together such an interesting and thoughtful panel of presenters. The event was extremely well organized--from sign in to reflection labs to dinner and dessert to the use of eco-friendly glassware and utensils and helpful Green Team volunteers. You did our community proud!
and pointed to the sign. She looked at me as if I had two heads and continued to block me. Sitting in the parking lot I have seen numerous cars coming in that way, even a local POLICE car! I wonder what would happen if I tried to come in that way? Probably get a ticket. Please, people. Use the second drive which is the entry.

But it's really replaced him with an attorney with no municipal law experience a shame that people there can't and then gave him a raise. They read. There is a drug store near ran on the false premise of the roundabout with two side financial responsibility and driveways. One is clearly marked "Do Not Enter". It is the exit for getting the village back on track. Everyone knows they ran on the prescription pickup. I have revenge because their partner’s had two standoffs with people who will actually block my car as I relative got terminated for payroll try to exit from the left lane which forgery. is the exit lane for turning west. LAWN & LANDSCAPING THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

HIDDEN HERO: OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT CAN MAKE YOU VERY POPULAR Five Things You May Not Know About Your Lawn Mower, Chain Saw, Generator, Power Washer, UTV And More (NAPSI)—Spring is here. Finally. After the 2018 winter season, you may be itching to get outside and spend time in your family yard. Having the right outdoor power equipment, like lawn mowers, chain saws, generators, edgers, trimmers and more, ensures you have the tools to get “backyard ready.” “The right outdoor power equipment can be your best friend when you start to work in your family yard—not to mention the best friend of the neighborhood,” says Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). “If you have a yard, you have a playground, but only if it’s ready for outdoor living and recreation.” Here are several ways outdoor power equipment keeps life humming, prepares family yards to be useful and play worthy, and keeps homeowner associations happy. 1. Plain and simple, outdoor power equipment makes the yard. The right equipment makes it easier than ever to create and take care of a great living landscape. You might not even break a sweat with the right equipment. Make mowing, trimming and pruning a little easier with some of today’s ergonomic, supercharged mowers, trimmers, edgers and chain saws. 2. Outdoor power equipment saves you time. Doing things outside is fun, and using some of the latest equipment will make sure grass is mowed, trees and shrubs are pruned, and borders are edged efficiently and quickly. After all, you have games and barbecues to attend and friends and family to meet (or invite over!). The right equipment can help you quickly take care of outdoor tasks, so you can have more time to enjoy your outdoor family room and relax. 3. The latest and greatest outdoor equipment innovation can make you the envy of neighbors and family. Today’s outdoor power equipment is powered in a variety of ways, from solar to battery and electric, from propane to gasoline. Your neighbors may be jealous if they see you lounging on the front porch with a cold drink watching your robotic mower trim the grass—but don’t let it bother you. Enjoy the time outside and encourage them to check it out. 4. The right equipment at the right time can also win you the Most Popular Neighbor award. Be the person who can whip out a chain saw when the tree falls across the road, or fire up a snow thrower to clear driveways and cul-de-sacs with ease (be sure to use safety precautions, too). Your house will be the most popular one in the neighborhood during a power outage if you have a generator and let your neighbors charge their phones and borrow space in your refrigerator. 5. Storms may wreak havoc, but outdoor power equipment makes sure your life and work aren’t interrupted. Engine-powered water pumps can help dry out homes after a flood or powerful rainstorm. When the lights go out, generators keep your house humming with light and power. Outdoor power equipment not only helps you handle your personal green space, but it also supports our first responders. You can rest easy knowing they have the tools to get their important jobs done. Generators, chain saws, the jaws of life, utility terrain vehicles and more help those who are injured and hurt every day. The efforts of our firefighters, utility contractors and those who work with nonprofit organizations such as Team Rubicon and AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams are all amplified with the help of outdoor power equipment. Follow hashtag #PoweringGood to learn more about people making a difference with their outdoor power equipment. Go to www.opei.org for safety tips and more information on outdoor power equipment.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES
DON’T LET NAUSEA SPOIL YOUR LIFE
Dark circles may result from pigmentation changes that occur after exposure to the sun or some other type of UV light. Individuals who apply sunscreen on their faces, including around their eyes, may be able to reduce or prevent pigment changes.
(NAPSI)—If you ever get sick to your stomach due to pregnancy, chemotherapy, surgery, riding in a car, a boat, a plane or an amusement park ride, or even virtual reality gaming, you may be relieved to learn two things: First, you’re not alone. Nausea affects millions of people every day. Scientists are not sure why, but according to a study published in the journal Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine, there is a significant genetic contribution that may be responsible for as much as 57 percent of the people who suffer from motion sickness.
Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. What To Do Next, whatever the cause, you can feel better with the help of these four anti-nausea tips: • Eat light, plain food, such as dry bread and crackers. • Avoid anything too sweet or greasy. • Sip certain liquids if you can—ginger ale, ginger tea, mint tea and plain water may all help. • Get a fast-acting, drug-free, nausea relief band that works without the side effects of medications such as drowsiness and constipation. How It Works Featuring a clinically proven technology, it’s a specially designed wristband that uses patented scientific knowledge, endorsed by health care professionals, and that emits accurately programmed pulses with highly specific waveforms, frequency and intensity. These pulses signal the median nerve at the P6 location on the underside of the wrist. This stimulation of the nerves, known as “neuromodulation,” uses the body’s natural neural pathways to send messages to the part of the brain that controls nausea, retching and vomiting. The signals have a rebalancing effect, normalizing nerve messages from the brain to the stomach and quickly reducing symptoms of nausea, retching and vomiting. The unique band is easy to use and comfortable to wear, even over time, and the attractive design rivals the most fashionable wearables. Called Reliefband 2.0, it features a latex-free band and hypoallergenic surgical steel contacts for efficient transmission of pulses. The intuitive display has 10 intensity settings that can be moved up and down at the touch of a button and a battery that lasts about 18 hours on a full charge and recharges quickly. This adjustable band, designed to control nausea, helps put you back in control so you can live your life in full motion. Learn More: For further information, go to www.reliefband.com, and to find a community of fellow nausea sufferers and learn how they cope, visit www.nationalstopnauseaday.com.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Adult Vaccines Help Boost Immune Systems --DEAR DR. ROACH: I was wondering what adult vaccines should be given to enhance the immune system, in addition to improving sleep and diet. -- P.P. ANSWER: Our bodies’ immune systems are designed to protect us from outside invaders (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) as well as internal errors (cancers), and they are very effective at doing so. Unfortunately, the germs and abnormal growths also are skilled at avoiding our immune systems, so there is a constant struggle going on. Giving your body proper nutrition and rest, and managing stress help your immune system perform at its best. Vaccines improve your body’s ability to fight off particular infections, increasing your immunity to very specific bacteria and viruses. The vaccines that are generally recommended for healthy adults are: • Flu vaccine (yearly); • Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis once, then tetanus/diphtheria every 10 years; • Human papillomavirus (three doses, up to age 26); • Zoster, the shingles vaccine (once after age 60); • Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13 once, PPSV23 once or twice). Depending on the person’s past history and risk factors, other vaccines – including the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine; meningococcal vaccine; hepatitis A and B vaccines; and haemophilus vaccine – also may be recommended. International travelers may need others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains the most recent recommendations on its website at www.vaccineinformation.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: This may seem like a trivial concern in comparison to some of the matters you address in your column, but it is a concern of mine. My spouse passes gas throughout the night. He claims that he is asleep and unaware of any problems. I say that this is a voluntary activity and that he should be able to control it. Who is right? -- D.B. ANSWER: He is. Passing gas while asleep is entirely involuntary. You probably are doing so also while asleep. If you are really bothered by his intestinal gas, then you can work on some dietary changes, including avoiding carbonated beverages and limiting foods that commonly cause the intestinal bacteria to produce gas, such as beans, bran, cauliflower and cabbage. In some people, excess gas production can be a sign of mild lactose intolerance. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Let’s not shake hands, period. Doctors seem determined to shake hands. I have been half-medicated when the doctor leaned over and insisted on shaking hands. In the ICU, I, another patient and several visitors were visited by several doctors, who came in and had to shake hands with everyone. I did not notice whether they cleaned up. -- L.F. ANSWER: I understand what you are saying, but I am not ready to recommend giving up shaking hands. I can understand not shaking hands with visitors in an ICU, but if I am going to be examining a patient, it’s polite to shake hands. Of course, I wash my hands before and after every exam, and hospitalized patients and their visitors should wash their hands frequently as well. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. BETTER ORAL HYGIENE IMPROVES DIABETIC OUTCOMES If you have type-2 diabetes, you have all the more reason to take good care of your teeth and gums by flossing and brushing regularly and getting regular dental checkups. It is also important to undergo “scaling” and “root planing” (non-surgical forms of “deep-cleaning” teeth above and below the gums) as needed. According to recent research, by treating and eliminating oral bacteria that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease, people with type-2 diabetes can better manage their blood glucose levels. Previous research has shown that oral bacteria may play an important role in diabetes. Those with type-2 diabetes are at greater risk of developing gum disease, and gum disease may increase the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Although gum disease is caused by oral bacteria, other factors can increase the risk, severity, and speed
of their development. These factors include disease, medications, smoking, poorly fitting bridges, defective restorations, poor diet, pregnancy, impacted food, and bad habits. You can still achieve good oral health, though, by following your dentist’s advice and practicing preventive hygiene. If you are new to the Batavia area and haven’t found the right dentist yet for your family, we invite you to call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, to set up an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Type-2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease, accounting for 90-95 percent of all cases among 30.3 million diabetics in the United States.

Your Early signs of Parkinson’s disease Despite affecting roughly 10 million people worldwide, Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, remains a mystery to many people. To people outside of the medical field with no personal or family history of Parkinson’s, the disease may only ring a bell because of some notable names attached to it. Actor Michael J. Fox and the late Muhammad Ali are two household names that made their Parkinson’s diagnoses public. But even those who study Parkinson’s for a living do not know everything about this puzzling disease. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the cause of Parkinson’s disease is largely unknown. While there’s no cure for the disease, various treatment options can help those diagnosed with the disease live as normal and productive a life as possible. The PF notes that understanding the disease and its progression is the first step to living well. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An apparent act of injustice might turn out to be either an error in judgment or just plain stupidity. So calm down and cool off, and let the explanations roll out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s upsetting when someone you trusted might have failed you. But with new opportunities ahead, you’ll soon be too busy to feel even a wee bit sorry for yourself. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sense of uncertainty could be a good reason to change your position on an important matter. Someone close might try to talk you out of it, but it’s your decision to make. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Being too zealous in pursuing your goal could create some resistance. Try to be more mindful of what you ask people to do, and they’ll be more likely to do it. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Things change as you go from being ignored to being Lionized once again. This is a good time to reintroduce those previously rejected ideas to a more receptive audience. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone new in your life creates both anticipation as well as anxiety. Avoid the potential for misunderstandings by watching what you say and how you say it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch your budget so that you don’t overspend now and have less to invest when the time is right later on. Arrange to share your weekend with someone special. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The temptation to involve yourself in a friend’s or family member’s personal problems is laudable. But get the facts before you make a firm commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to keep the faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’ve reached an important point in your ongoing pursuit of your goals. You might now want to consider letting someone you trust join you on your journey. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You’ve been going through a spate of uncertainty involving people you care for. But it might be time to take a stand on a position you feel sure you can defend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Treading water keeps you busy, but it won’t get you where you need to go. Time to stop making excuses and to start moving ahead toward your goals. BORN THIS WEEK: You see life as both creative and pragmatic. You would not only be a fine artist, but also a successful one. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

David Marsh, A Life of Courage By Pat May, Perinton Historical Society Director of Communications David Marsh was a little boy who smiled often but nothing garnered smiles from him more than his two loves – firefighting and baseball. Although his life took a different turn than most boys his age, David was still able to realize some of his dreams due to the compassion of the Fairport community. Paul David Marsh, the eldest of Harold and Carolyn Crane Marsh’s three children, was born on August 7, 1940. Later he was joined by brother Harold Jr. “Hal” and little sister Molly. He was named after his paternal uncle, Paul Marsh, but the little boy was always called David by family and friends. At the age of six, David contracted rheumatic fever, which led to the beginning of many stays in the hospital throughout the rest of his short life and caused him to be wheelchair bound. In an age where accessibility for physically challenged individuals was rare, David received support from many in the Fairport community, who found alternative ways to include him in childhood activities that others his age would have taken for granted. Knowing of David’s interest in firefighting, the Fairport Fire Department presented him with an honorary membership in 1949 at the rank of lieutenant and gave him a jacket, badge and hat, all of which he wore proudly. Three years later, on November 8, 1952, David was promoted to captain in a special ceremony held at the New York State Rehabilitation Hospital in Haverstraw, New York. David received this honorary rank from the Fairport Fire Department, but it was given to him by Charles M. Fales, president of the Firemen’s Association of New York State, with 16 members of the Haverstraw Fire Department looking on. Each spring at the opening game of the Little League baseball season, David handed the baseball to the Mayor, who would then throw the first pitch. He served as the honorary president of Little League and was awarded a sportsmanship award. On June 8, 1953, the baseball field at Perinton Park was dedicated “David Marsh Field.” An historic marker was placed at the park in 1988 commemorating the site of the town’s first Little League baseball field. In spite of the challenge of spending months at a time at Genesee Hospital, where he required an

educational tutor, and then a year away for rehabilitation at the hospital in Haverstraw, David was eventually able to return to Fairport schools where each day boys lined up to help carry his wheelchair up and down the stairs of West Avenue School. David proudly graduated from Fairport High School in 1959. The following year, he enrolled in a correspondence course in accounting, which allowed him to acquire a job as bookkeeper at Plastic Pools of Rochester in Fairport. Paul David Marsh died August 1, 1964, just six days shy of his twenty-fourth birthday. He was laid to rest at White Haven Memorial Park, but that wasn’t the end of his story. Earlier this year, David’s sister Molly donated items which were close to David’s heart to the Perinton Historical Society. The collection includes his Fairport firefighter jacket, Captain’s and Lieutenant’s hats and badges, framed certificate naming David an honorary member of the Fairport Fire Department, newspaper articles, photographs and David’s Little League trophies. The items are now on exhibit in the Fairport Historical Museum (18 Perrin St.) where, despite his short life, the little boy with the big smile is being remembered and honored for his courage in the face of adversity. This exhibit will be on display through the end of 2018. For more information, please visit: www.perintonhistoricalsociety.org

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
