Such foods do not need to be shipped hundreds of miles before they ultimately find their way onto your plate, and many people find that contributes to meals that are more fresh than meals made up of foods shipped from afar. But freshness is not the only benefit to purchasing locally grown foods, which pay various dividends for people and the planet. Locally grown foods benefit the environment. The phrase “field to plate” is significant to consumers who prefer locally grown foods. That phrase refers to the distance food travels from the grower to the plate on your dinner table. Estimates vary depending on the source, but advocates of locally grown food suggest that it reduces the field to plate distance by an average of 1,300 miles. That’s a significant feather in locally grown foods’ cap, as the Council on the Environment of New York City notes that it takes 435 fossil-fuel calories to fly a single five calorie strawberry from California to New York. Buying locally preserves that energy that is used to transport foods from afar.

Antique things have an appreciation and worth. Something can be old, but it can be timeless; therefore, it becomes an antique. If this antique is preserved and deemed precious, it could be passed down as a family heirloom. ~CeeLo Green
A house with any kind of age will have dozens of stories to tell. I suppose if a novelist could live long enough, one could base an entire oeuvre on the lives that weave in and out of an antique house. ~Anita Shreve

Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Danielle Nahas as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout by Susan Cook Girl Scouts of Western New York are proud to announce Danielle Nahas of Spencerport, NY, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Nahas’ project, Helping Youth Meet Their Potential, involved creating a book for independent living targeted at young adults in at-risk situations. Nahas partnered with the Center for Youth in Rochester, which offers help and support for teens and youth who are considered to be at risk, such as those who have run away from home or have an unstable family. Knowing the youths would struggle to find an adult to support them as they transitioned to independent living, Nahas hoped her book would provide tips and serve as a guide to get them started. The book’s content included easy cooking recipes (with many accessible items at the Center for Youth’s cabinet), laundry tips, first aid information, and other useful advice.
Nahas stated, “I can empathize with this age group about how hard it is to start transferring into adulthood. However, I do have a good support system in my life and at home so I can only imagine how much harder it would be for those who do not have this to start a new part of their life.”

Nahas also commented, “Girl Scouts has made me gain a greater appreciation for volunteering and making an impact on other people’s lives. I have continued these values into college where I am a part of a service organization that requires 15 hours of service a semester. I enjoyed this so much that I am now a part of the philanthropy committee. I hope that I can always help others in college and even into my career.”

Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers.
The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. Thank you so much to the kind woman at our local pool store who gave me a reference for a pool contractor. We have a nearly new pool from a friend of the family; it was brand new & up for 1 year & taken down for family business needs. We were left in the dust with another contractor after we made arrangements, including the permit & contract, to install the pool at our home. Afterwards, we couldn't find anyone willing to drive out of Monroe County or who would be 'possibly' available by late July. I called your reference (Greg) on Friday, who came to our house to survey the site & pool equipment. He said everything was in perfect shape & that he would get us installed this week. Kindness is hard to find. Thank you again for approaching me at the pool store & helping our family.
Every day we entrust our children to “strangers” and expect them to return home safe each night. These adults have been hired by our school district. This means they have been thoroughly checked and are deemed as safe adults. When teachers, counselors, and bus drivers make decisions and rules to keep our children safe they should not be questioned. When
On June 8th, my husband and I were having lunch at the Dutch Hollow Restaurant in East Avon. The waitress had picked up our dirty plates and we thought she picked up our bill by mistake to. We asked about the bill only to be told that someone had paid for our meal. This was so unexpected but so appreciated. I have done this for others in the past, and now I know how they must have felt. We were grateful and blessed. Many thanks to whoever you are. I will again pay it forward! God Bless, Robin and Rick Dieffenbacher I would like to thank the hardworking women of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Geneseo

We need to support our district staff. If problems arise while your child is learning and growing have the decency to communicate with the district staff. The adults in our community need to come together to help raise respectful children. STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

The word “prom” is short for “promenade dance,” an annual formal dance held for high school students, typically those in their junior and senior years. While the term “prom” might not be used across the globe, schools in many countries host similar dances for high school-aged students on the cusp of moving on to college. In the United Kingdom, proms did not become popular until very recently. Prior to the 21st century, secondary school students in the UK might have attended formal dances at the onset of summer to celebrate the end of a school term, while students old enough to be finishing secondary school might have attended a “Leavers Ball” to commemorate that milestone in their life. But a 2012 report in the Daily Telegraph noted than more than 85 percent of secondary schools in Britain now host school proms, which range from relatively informal gatherings to more extravagant affairs. In South Africa, students may attend a Matric Dance, which commemorates their final year matriculating in their high schools. German high school students celebrate their graduations rather informally, and such celebrations may even include some lighthearted mocking of their teachers.

I love to play with my not so big brother Scofield the Maine Coon and my yellow Labradane brother Liam. My favorite thing to do is swim in the bathtub, until I don’t fit anymore. I’m going to be a big boy! I have lots of energy and love to play. But the best part of the day is snuggling up in bed with mommy, daddy and my brothers. Your Signs of atrial fibrillation — and how to treat it Palpitations of the heart or uncomfortable sensations in the chest can be distressing. Thoughts of heart attack may come to mind, and that anxiety can only exacerbate the situation. While heart attack might be the first thing people think of when experiencing chest discomfort, atrial fibrillation may be to blame for such feelings. Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that may lead to heart-related complications. The American Heart Association says that at least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFib. Although treatable, without proper diagnosis, AFib may lead to blood clots, stroke and even heart failure. Many people with AFib experience no symptoms at all and are unaware they have it until it is discovered during a physical examination. For those who experience symptoms, The Mayo Clinic lists these as some of the more common: • Palpitations, which can be sensations of a flip-flopping in the chest or even a racing feeling. • Fatigue • Reduced ability to exercise • Lightheadedness • Chest pain or shortness of breath • Dizziness and weakness
ECG, which will show the heart’s electrical activity as line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the tracings are called waves. An EKG will determine if the heart is pumping correctly. AFib is more common among people with clogged arteries or diabetes and may develop following valve surgery. AFib also is more common in people with coronary heart disease. As a person ages, his or her risk for AFib increases. Stress also can be a major factor in triggering AFib, according to StopAfib.org.
Once AFib is diagnosed, managing risk factors and restoring When the heart is working normally, it contracts and relaxes in a heart to normal rhythm becomes the priority. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
The Case Against Hydrogen Peroxide --DEAR DR. ROACH: My dental hygienist recommends rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs after flossing. Lately I have heard the using too much hydrogen peroxide can be harmful. What are your thoughts? -- T.W. ANSWER: Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antiseptic that has some usefulness for household objects; however, I don’t recommend it as an oral rinse. It is too toxic to tissues. In a 1993 study, even hydrogen peroxide solutions diluted to half and quarter strengths caused damage to mucous membranes and caused “overwhelmingly negative subjective reactions.” Thus they were not recommended for oral care. A regular mouthwash is a much better choice, and your dentist can prescribe a medicated mouthwash if needed. Incidentally, I don’t recommend hydrogen peroxide for cleaning cuts and abrasions, either. It isn’t effective at inhibiting bacterial growth. I recommend careful cleaning with mild soap and water or saline and an antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a blood-borne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy by an ophthalmologist, whom I saw for an eye exam recently. Would you please tell me more about this disease? Is there any treatment? What can I expect in the future? It is getting harder to read and do close work. -- N.O. ANSWER: Fuchs’ dystrophy is a condition of older eyes, which happens when the cells in the innermost lining of the cornea (the translucent, colorless front part of the eye) degenerate, causing, initially, deposits in the cornea and later swelling of the cornea. The disease has a complex genetic pattern of inheritance, and tends to progress slowly. Treatments include soft contact lenses to “bandage” the cornea, and eyedrops. Transplant surgery of the affected lining of the cornea (called Descemet’s membrane), or the whole cornea, is the definitive treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy ABSENT TEETH The term “anodontia” is used to describe the genetic or congenital (hereditary) absence of teeth. The teeth most commonly missing are the “lateral incisors” (on either side of the two front teeth) and the “second bicuspids” (two teeth behind the canine, or eye, teeth). As you might imagine, missing these teeth poses some problems beyond cosmetic. When holes are left where teeth should be, other teeth may slowly shift out of place, changing the way teeth fit together and adversely affect bite. Depending on the teeth that are missing, the dentist can provide a variety of tooth-replacement options, including a partial denture, a Maryland bridge (resin bonded), a bridge, or a crown supported by a dental implant. It’s one of life’s simple truths - no one gets more than one set of permanent teeth. Teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but you have to work at
it; you have to want to keep them badly enough to do what needs to be done. And if that means protecting them by eating and drinking healthy foods and beverages, brushing and flossing regularly, and having regular professional visits, then we hope you will call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment at 585.343.4246. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, our leading-edge dental office will give you a reason to smile! P.S. If left untreated, anodontia can lead to malocclusion, gum damage, impeded bone (jaw) growth, reduced chewing ability, inarticulate pronunciation, and other possible problems.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Count to 10 if you must, but don’t lose your temper, despite that person’s (you know who!) efforts to goad you into reacting. Your restraint will pay off in a big way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week finds you in a sociable mood, ready and eager to enjoy the company of family and friends. It’s also a good time to seek out and renew old friendships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Patience is called for as you await a decision about that project you’re eager to launch. Meanwhile, try to set aside more time to share with that special person in your life. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid becoming involved in a workplace dispute early in the week by insisting both sides submit their stands to a neutral arbitrator. Things begin to cool off by Thursday. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It promises to be a busy but productive week for the Big Cat. The pace slows by Friday, allowing you to catch up on matters you put aside but that now need your attention. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suddenly disruptive family situation is best handled with a cool, calm and collected response. Wait until things settle to let off all that pent-up emotional steam. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your practical side dominates the week as you reassess your finances to make some sensible adjustments in what you plan to spend and what you expect to save. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected meeting with a former colleague opens some interesting possibilities. But you need to press for full disclosure before making a decision. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent flurry of activity eases by midweek, giving you time to readjust your disrupted schedule and make new plans for a weekend getaway. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re usually the one who gives advice. But now it’s time to open yourself up to counsel from friends who have your best interests at heart. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might find resistance to your call for a full inquiry into a workplace problem. But by week’s end even the most rigid naysayers begin to come around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recurring problem surfaces once again. Maybe it’s time you used your creative talents to help you find a new approach to resolving it once and for all. BORN THIS WEEK: You are guided in what you do both by your intelligence and your emotions. An acting career would suit you quite well. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

WOOD STAINING TIPS
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Switch to LED light bulbs. Some LED light bulbs have a lifespan of up to 10 years, and are 80 to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs. They are generally more environmentally friendly than CFLs and safer, too, since they produce less heat. The return on investment is excellent, as LED bulbs often pay for themselves through energy savings within the first year.

(NAPSI)—Although properly functioning vehicle lights, wipers and mirrors allow for better visibility while driving, these items are all too often forgotten or ignored when people perform basic auto care, says the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making sure that you can see and be seen on the road is essential to avoiding motor vehicle accidents, yet many motorists overlook simple maintenance steps that can improve driving visibility,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Following a few auto care visibility tips can be illuminating, helping to ensure the safety of you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. • Replace any exterior or interior lights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or nonfunctioning and be sure headlights are correctly aimed. • Make sure that vehicle mirrors are clean and properly positioned. • Check windshield washer fluid level and, when it gets low, replace it. • Replace wiper blades if they show cracking or if they chatter or streak when operating. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade. • When in doubt, turn your lights on to help you see and help other drivers see you. Some places even have laws that require headlights to be on when windshield wipers are operating. • Don’t overdrive your headlights. Maintain a speed that will let you stop within the illuminated area; otherwise, you create a blind crash zone in front of your vehicle. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website at www.carcare.org.
