Add mushroom stems and garlic and fry until no moisture remains, taking care not to burn garlic. Set aside to cool. Combine cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Stuff each mushroom cap with cheese mixture and arrange on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, or until mushrooms are piping hot and liquid starts to form under caps.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

market, though, keep your eye out for anything that looks particularly good, whether or not it’s on your list. It is easy enough to change the menu if something unexpected and great shows up at the market. If you buy it and it needs to be cooked, though, make sure to make a plan for when to serve it so it won’t get forgotten in the fridge. Other things to bring include a handful of the plastic bags you have lying around your kitchen and a shopping bag. If you’re going to be out for a while, you may also want to bring a cooler so that your heat-sensitive veggies do not wilt on the ride home. 2. TALK TO THE FARMERS! The experience of shopping at a farmers market is enriched when you begin talking with the farmers. Some good topics: what to look for when choosing a particular kind of vegetable, the farmer’s favorite ways of preparing a particular vegetable, when the ___ might be ready for harvest, and the impact of the recent weather on the crops.

Whatever your style, if you’re at a new market you may feel most comfortable if you pick a strategy. 4. TALK IT UP. It’s your community’s farmers market! The more you and your neighbors go - and spend money! - the stronger and more diverse your market will become. If your town gets a reputation as a place that supports local food, more new farmers will want to try farming in your community.

HURRY IN FOR BEST SELECTION!

GVPS ONLINE POLL: The Supreme Court dealt a major blow to public sector unions on Wednesday. The justices struck down an Illinois law that required non-union workers to pay fees that go to collective bargaining. The public sector unions argue that if non-members don’t have any obligation to pay fair share fees for the collective bargaining obligations, they would become free riders, benefiting from the representation without sharing the costs.

PSAT/NMSQT GIVES STUDENTS LEARNING TOOLS AND OPPORTUNITIES (NAPSI)—Every year, some 4 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT, a valuable part of preparing students for college success. When the results come in, they get so much more than a score—they get an invitation to productive practice and a connection to distinct benefits and opportunities to support their journey to college. That’s because the PSAT/NMSQT test reflects what students are learning in the classroom, measures the skills and knowledge necessary for postsecondary success, and is an important step toward college. It’s also great practice for the SAT because both have the same question types and formats. Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT score higher, on average, on the SAT than those who do not. One reason may be that students and teachers can use the scores to see where they’re thriving and where they need additional support. Since PSAT/NMSQT scores are on the same scale as SAT scores, it’s easy to track student progress. After taking the PSAT/NMSQT, students can link their College Board account to Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy (satpractice.org) and use their score to get a free, personalized SAT study plan focusing on the areas where they need the most work. These free study tools help students prepare for test day and support classroom learning. The program features thousands of interactive questions with instant feedback; video lessons that walk students through how to solve a problem step by step; eight full-length practice tests; test-taking tips and strategies; and a practice schedule based on the student’s upcoming test date. What’s more, the PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The College Board’s scholarship and recognition partners, including the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, and United Negro College Fund, provide over $180 million annually to qualified, low-income and minority students based on PSAT/ NMSQT scores. Students’ test scores can also help indicate their potential to succeed in challenging Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Students can review their score report with their counselors and teachers to discuss which AP courses they should consider. This helps schools ensure that no student is overlooked and encourages more students to challenge themselves with college-level coursework. Students who succeed on AP exams can save money on tuition and are more likely to graduate on time. Learn more at www.psat.org.

Batavia City Firefighters, IAFF Local 896 thanks the community for their patience in the downtown area during the MDA Fill the Boot event on 6/15. The event raised over $9,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in five hours. Thanks also go out to local businesses that have hosted our traveling boot throughout the year. I was at Mugsy's on 5 & 20 in Bloomfield this week. The staff, service and food were wonderful.

The servings are good and the prices are reasonable. The owners mentioned they had only opened two weeks ago. I definitely will be returning to the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Wishing you the very best success. It was an excellent program at Pavilion Central School, the Pre-K Graduation Ceremony on Monday, June 18. It was well organized and well done! Thank You for providing such a

Then you act put out when we remind you that you didn’t give a donation for all the drinks you got. So sick of people thinking they can get everything free. Quit mooching off the rest of us! Hats Off (not!) to my local school district for allowing a suspect in a criminal case to enter the high school building (after an ID check, no less). The ladies in the front office need to stop eating cookies and get down to business! It's not good enough that the SRO later caught the mistake- the person was not on the original guest speaker list and should never have been allowed to proceed into the school. I face stricter scrutiny when I go to vote, LOL. As usual, the high school principal and the superintendent were too caught

Last week, we tragically lost one of the beloved members of our Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Judy Gillis was the assistant to our Sales Manager. Her duties were many, and because of her position she was involved in almost every aspect of our business. She was thorough and efficient in her work and a good friend to us all. She will be sadly missed.

…stay tuned for volume 12 next month

FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAY LOWER RISK OF PAD

Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness. When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

EVERYONE WITH ALS COUNTS (NAPSI)-Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells. It first gained national attention as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with ALS in 1939. To date, the cause of ALS is unknown, and there is still no known cure. The disease strikes quickly, usually leading to death within two to five years of diagnosis. But every person with ALS has an individual story, and understanding these stories will help researchers ultimately piece together clues about this disease. Ed Tessaro was diagnosed with ALS in 2009. As he learned to cope with this diagnosis, he reflects, “I’ve never considered myself a victim of the disease because I believe in my heart all of us have a wheelchair. In my case, it’s quite literal, but with everything that goes on in my life, I realize that every family has had a crisis.” One of the things that helps him and others with ALS is reaching out for community support and resources. “The ongoing struggle is to encourage newly diagnosed people to come in and talk about their condition. I want to help people learn about the National ALS Registry, clinical trials, and other resources that can provide support and hope.” The National ALS Registry helps gather information from those who are living with this disease. Researchers from all around the world can access the Registry data to help scientists learn more about what causes this disease. Everyone’s story is different, and everyone’s piece of the puzzle is essential. The Registry has found that almost 16,000 persons with ALS live in the United States, as of 2014. It is important to include as many people as possible living with the disease to get the most accurate information. When patients join, it helps give researchers more information. This could lead to a better understanding of the causes of ALS, because learning more about the disease is one step further in the battle to defeat it. Concludes Ed, “It’s tough, but maybe we can fling open a door or two in the next couple of years of research. I’m happy just to stall this thing and get all of us to another chapter in our lives.” If you or someone you care about has ALS, please consider learning more about the National ALS Registry by visiting www.cdc.gov/ALS.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Don’t fight the elements. Many people go to great lengths to change what nature gave them. For example, those with curly hair will spend hours with straightening irons or special serums. Try to embrace the elements and your natural hair texture this summer. Use a product to keep frizz away and let hair air dry. Wavy, beach-inspired hair screams summer and can give you that carefree look.

“Knee pain no longer rules my life!” – Phylis Aderhold, Niagara Falls, NY

For Phylis Aderhold, walking down a grocery aisle or to the mailbox was an excruciatingly painful experience. “My right knee was bone on bone with no cartilage to provide a natural cushion,” said Phylis, who was nearly 100% immobile and experiencing sleepless nights. Her husband, Jerry, had heard that WCCHS uses 3D printing technology to create knee replacements based on the patient’s actual knee. “For me, the better choice was to have my knee replacement based on my knee,” said Phylis. Dr. Paul Mason (far right), a board certified orthopaedic surgeon at WCCHS, performed the surgery. He was careful to work with Phylis to make sure she was ready for the surgery physically.

“Now I can walk, bend my knee and even ride a bike!” said Phylis, who for thirteen years struggled to walk. She also sang the praises of Jim O’May, PA (far left) and Orthopaedic Patient Care Coordinator Becky Noon, RN (center) for their compassion and professional care. “It’s really different being in a hospital away from my hometown,” says Phylis, who traveled from Niagara Falls. “I’ve been in a hospital forty different times and I’ve never been treated as well as I was here at WCCHS!” “I know where I’m going to have my left knee replaced,” says Phylis. “I’m going to Wyoming County Community Health System!”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Genetic Screening May be Helpful for Some --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old female who weighs 97 pounds and is 4 feet, 10 inches tall. I’m a non-smoker, non-drinker. I’m a mother of three, take no medications and have no medical issues except acid reflux. My brother died of Ewing sarcoma at 6. My 10-year-old sister died of dysgerminoma. Mom was diagnosed with colon cancer at 47 and died at 52. Dad died of pancreatic cancer at 81 after being in remission from prostate cancer for five years. On Mom’s side, her sister and aunt also had colon cancer. What screenings do I need? What screenings are needed for my two daughters, ages 41 and 43? My daughters’ paternal grandmother died of breast cancer at 72. My other siblings, a 56-year-old brother and 68-year-old sister, are healthy. -- G.T. ANSWER: With so many cancers in your family, I would strongly suggest a visit with a genetic counselor. The combination of colon, pancreatic and prostate cancer suggests a genetic syndrome, such as Lynch syndrome and BRCA 1 or 2, although your history isn’t classic for either of these. There are many less-common familial syndromes that increase the risk for various cancers, and we are gradually increasing our knowledge of them. Some of the cancers you mention are not associated with any known syndrome, such as Ewing sarcoma, a primary bone cancer, and dysgerminoma, a rare type of ovarian cancer. It’s possible that your family has just been very unfortunate. Still, I would recommend getting more knowledge about any genetic risk you may have. With this information, you can learn the right screening strategies for yourself, as well as obtain information that could potentially be valuable to your siblings and children. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: At first the doctors thought my wife had myasthenia gravis. After a series of tests, it was determined that she did not have that disease. However, the neurologists now think she has mitochondrial myopathy. Can you tell us a little more about this disease, please? -- R.R. ANSWER: Mitochondrial myopathies are a group of disorders of the mitochondria, which are responsible for the production of energy inside the cell. Almost all cells contain mitochondria, but muscle cells are loaded with them. Since they do so much of the energy consumption, muscles are most affected. These disorders used to be considered rare, but it is now thought that 1 in 10,000 people may have one of these disorders (which makes it uncommon, but not rare). Mitochondria come almost completely from the mother, and as a result, a family history of muscle problems in the maternal line suggests this diagnosis. Mitochondrial myopathies range dramatically in severity. They are diagnosed with a combination of blood testing, EKG (since some can affect heart muscle), EMG (a test of the electrical activity of muscle), muscle biopsy and genetic tests of the mitochondria. Unfortunately, I can’t give you any details at all about prognosis or treatment, which require a specific diagnosis. Most of these have no specific treatment, though L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 and creatine often are tried. Your wife’s neurologists will give you more information. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy PLANE FACTS To prevent the mild form of gum disease known as “gingivitis,” patients should be diligent about brushing and flossing at home and scheduling professional cleanings that can effectively remove the sticky film of bacteria-laden “plaque” that can cause inflammation. As gums become inflamed, they pull away from teeth to form pockets. Plaque that then becomes trapped in these pockets cannot be removed with regular brushing. Instead, the accumulated plaque hardens into “tartar,” which can only be removed with “scaling and root planing.” This deep-cleaning procedure involves the use of a sharp, hookshaped instrument that scrapes away plaque and tartar from the sides of each tooth, all the way down below the gum line to the bottom of the pockets. Some studies estimate that more than half of all people over age 18 have at least the early stage of gum disease.

After age 35, about three out of four adults are affected. Avoid the need for gum scaling and root planing, and protect yourself and your family – practice conscientious home care, have regular checkups, and eat a healthy diet. We’ll help too at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL because we care almost as much as you do about the health of your teeth and gums. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. According to a July 2015 study in the Journal of the American Dental Association, scaling and root planing are beneficial to patients with chronic periodontitis, which affects 47.2% of adults over age 30 in the United States.

Your 3 money-saving travel tips for retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. 1. Take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. 2. Don’t overlook travel agencies. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many

specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors to their countries want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. 3. Travel as part of a group. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it’s with a retirement community, religious organization or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters. Many working professionals hope to spend the bulk of their retirement traveling the globe. While such a goal is potentially costly, there are various ways to save and still see the world.

Did You Know? An individual retirement account, or IRA, is a type of account men and women who meet certain eligibility requirements can open to save money for their retirement. Unlike a 401(k), a type of retirement account that is provided by an employer, an IRA must be opened by an individual.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A money problem that shows up early in the week is expeditiously resolved by savvy Bovines who know how to turn a momentary financial lapse into a monetary gain. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good time to shed negative energydraining forces and develop a positive approach to handling current, as well as upcoming, personal and/or professional situations. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your urge to do your best on a current task is commendable. But don’t let it become all-consuming. Spend some spiritually restorative time with those who love you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) This could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas to take your bows for your recent achievements and then go off to enjoy some fun times with your prides and joys. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A negative response to a wellintentioned suggestion could communicate a sense of distrust you might later find hard to refute. Think carefully before reacting. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your loving attention comforts a family member who is feeling a bit out of sorts. But be careful to prioritize your time so you don’t neglect your work duties. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your curiosity might be resented by some. But those who know you will support your penchant for never settling for less than the truth. So stay with it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A pesky situation from the past recurs, albeit in an altered form. Deal with it promptly before it can go from merely irksome to decidedly troublesome. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t wait too long to submit your proposals after giving them a last look-over. If necessary, you should be able to defend any portion called into question. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A bid to use your workplace dispute-settling skills in another situation is tempting. But be careful: You might not have all the facts you’ll need if you agree to do it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) That sense of self-doubt is so untypical of you, you should have no qualms in shaking it off. Remind yourself of all you’ve done and can do, and then do it again. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to charm others without sacrificing sincerity is what makes people want to follow your leadership. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Pet$aver Healthy Pet Superstore Russell & Brenda Herman established their first store in Greece in 1994. Their Rottweiler Bucky had terrible skin and coat due to being fed poor quality pet food. Once they were educated on the advantages of feeding a great pet food and healing their dog in under a month, they decided that they needed to get this message to every pet owner. They then opened their first store. The primary focus is on getting their customer’s pets on great quality foods. In addition to providing very personal customer service, they offer a full line of pet products and self-washes for dogs. Pets make people happy and are part of the family. If they can help improve the health of those pets and improve the bond people have with their pets, that makes them happy. Between the 4 stores, corporate office, and warehouse, they employ about 45 people. Pet$aver’s Healthy Pet Superstore are suckers for every cause, besides being active in their local Chambers, Rotary, church, etc. They are very proud to be able to donate all of the dog and cat food fed at Lollypop Farm and Rochester Animal Services. With the help of the customers and pet food manufacturers, they developed a program to cover this entire cost. Doing so frees up funds for them to use for other projects such as spay/neuter programs and pet ownership education. They also sponsor running races, Veteran’s Outreach Center, CURE Childhood Cancer, many local

pet rescue groups, Scouts, etc. Their family believes in serving their community and their country. Both of their children are active duty military members, so helping and honoring our veterans is one of Pet$aver’s major causes. Isn’t it great to have your pet eagerly awaiting your arrival at home? That’s how they want you to feel when you come to Pet$aver. They especially love it when you bring your pet with you. There have been many times they have given customers hugs who have come into our stores to tell us that they just lost their beloved pet and knew that we would understand their loss. Then there is the customer who brings in their new puppy or kitten knowing that we would be thrilled to meet them. Pets are family and they get it. They are going to do everything that they can to make them happy. Congratulations to Pet$avers Healthy Pet Superstore as June 2018’s Business of the Month!

WOOD STAINING TIPS

HOME SERVICES

Page 35

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Inspect flashing. Professional roofers can recognize properly installed flashing, the material that connects the roof to other parts of the house that adjoin the roof, like skylights or a chimneys. Poorly installed flashing can cause leaks. Stains that appear below chimneys or near attic windows may indicate new flashing, and not new shingles, is needed.

Fig and Walnut Fruit Cake Makes 12 servings 1 1 3⁄4 1⁄2 1⁄2 1 3 1 1⁄2 1⁄4

Vegetable oil spray lb. walnut halves & pieces lb. dried figs, stems removed, quartered cup all-purpose flour teaspoon baking powder teaspoon fine sea salt cup sugar large eggs, lightly beaten teaspoon vanilla extract cup diced candied orange peel cup walnut brandy

Preheat the oven to 225 F. Coat the inside of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with the vegetable oil spray; set aside. Toss the walnuts and figs in a large mixing bowl; set aside. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Toss 3 tablespoons of the dry ingredients with the nuts and fruit to coat. Adds the eggs and vanilla to the remaining dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon to form a smooth batter. Mix in the candied orange peel. Scrape into the nuts and fruit and toss with a rubber spatula until everything is evenly coated. Scrape the batter-coated nuts and fruit into the prepared pan, wet your hands with cold water, and pack the nuts and fruit firmly into the pan. Set in the oven and bake for 8 hours, until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. (An instantread thermometer inserted in the center of the cake should register 215 to 225 F.) Remove the pan from the oven and spoon the brandy over the top. Cool on a rack for 30 minutes. Run a knife around the edge to loosen, invert onto a rack, remove the pan, turn right-side up, and cool to room temperature. Variation: You can “bake” this in a slow cooker; you will need a 11⁄2-quarter soufflé dish and a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Once the batter is in the soufflé dish, put it in the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours.

Submit resumes to: officeassistant456@gmail.com TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective.

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.

That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.
