H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With new facts to work with, you should feel more confident in moving ahead. But continue to do so at an unhurried pace so you can spot details you might otherwise miss. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Taking on that new workplace project could be one of your smarter career moves. Expect a surprising show of support from someone who had always been a critic. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel you’re too busy to undertake a new responsibility. But check it out before making any decisions. What you learn could persuade you to change your mind. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You feel quite content enjoying all the comforts of home right now. But the urge to travel grows stronger, and by week’s end, you could begin packing your bags. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A hectic period begins to ease up, but that doesn’t mean the Fine Feline can do much catnapping these days. You need to finish those old tasks and prepare for new ones. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expect to get some good news about your financial situation by week’s end. But it could still be too early to rush out with a long shopping list of things to buy. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your management skills make an impression on some workplace VIPs who might be looking for someone like you to take on an upcoming project. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Meeting a former adversary might be unsettling at first. But time has softened hard feelings, and you could be on the brink of starting a new relationship. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A troubling situation close to home might cause you to change your travel plans. But getting all the facts before you act might cause you to reconsider. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might be quite alone right now in deciding to support a major workplace shift. But others will join you as new information supports your bold move. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A former co-worker returns with news that could persuade you to reassess recently made plans. Be sure to consult with a trusted colleague before you act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your motives behind a recent decision could be called into question by a rival. But once you present the facts, all doubts will be resolved. Enjoy an artsrich weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: While you love being the center of attention, your generous heart allows you to share the attention with others. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. • Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. • Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. • Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the

stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. • Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

HOW TO KEEP CHICKEN FROM STICKING TO YOUR GRILL According to the grill manufacturer Weber, the keys to grilling chicken are temperature and time. But even cooks who have paid close attention to the temperature of their grills and the time their chicken spends over a hot flame have no doubt fallen victim to chicken that sticks to the grill. This can affect the quality of a meal and make post-grilling cleanup that much more difficult. To prevent sticking, Weber advises cooks to put a light coating of olive oil and seasoning directly on the chicken prior to putting it on the grill. Once the chicken has been dressed, make sure the grill temperature remains around 425 F to 450 F. Chicken will stick to a grill if the temperature is too high, so pay close attention to the temperature at all times. Once the chicken has been placed on the grill, allow each side to cook for roughly 4.5 minutes. If the chicken is difficult to flip or remove from the grill, close the lid and allow it to cook for one additional minute.

Extend the life of your vehicle: Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.

AUTO SECTION

Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicle’s oil every 3,000 miles, many of today’s newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil changes, and don’t forget to replace the oil filter when changing your vehicle’s oil.

Avoid hanging items that compromise visibility. M any drivers like to hang trinkets, fuzzy dice or personal photos from their vehicles’ rearview mirrors. Avoid hanging such items, w hich can prove distracting and res trict your view of the road.

“Dream Big & Believe”

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Oatka Fest – July 14th, 2018 By Amanda Dudek

Even from a distance, the pitched, white tents and the luscious scents wafting along warm summer breezes suggested one thing: this place has good food. The twin rows of tents lining the LeRoy Junior/Senior High School grounds boasts many delicious options, including kettle corn, cotton candy, pulled pork, snow cones, hot dogs, pulled pork, candy apples, beef on wick, Italian sausage, even Mooney’s Bar & Grill’s outstanding mac n’ cheese. The Oatka Festival primary spans two streets: East Main Street and Church Street, which also flank the school in the Town of Le Roy. On the corner of Church and East Main, one can’t help noticing a stand with signs encouraging passersby to sign up for the unique, and hilarious, Duck Derby, an event in which dozens or even hundreds, of numbered rubber ducks are hosed from one side of Oatka Creek to the other. Cash prizes are awarded for the first ten ducks and the last duck retrieved from the water. This sign-up location, perched atop a hill, overlooks the banks of Oatka Creek where the Duck Derby will be held and where the Regatta has already gotten underway. Back amidst the food tents, Fowler’s Lemonade stands out with its fresh strawberry, raspberry and regular flavors. Made fresh, they were all succulent with berry and pulp and ice and sugar. A local restaurant, Mooney’s Bar & Grill is also representing its hometown of LeRoy with customer favorites such as lobster mac n’ cheese and cheeseburger mac n’ cheese. More traditional fare, such as hot dogs and hamburgers, are also available from the Rotary. Underneath the Rotary tent, the School Superintendent Merritt Holly is pitching in

behind a grill. He very obligingly posed with fellow Rotary volunteers for a picture, an example of the community spirit that abounds here. On the adjoining side of the school grounds, the Oatka Festival follows through on its promise to have several fun and free activities for children. Pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course, a National Guard football toss, a 9 hole mini golf, a mini-ark petting zoo and a rock wall are all open and free to children of all ages. Finally and worth noting, the Jell-O Museum and the LeRoy House were both offering free tours during the festival. Although there were several other events offered which we did not experience, both earlier on Saturday and also on Sunday, my family, friends and I had a very enjoyable afternoon at the Oatka Festival and look forward to going again next year. GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Does an Aspirin a Day Keep Heart Risk at Bay? We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy LONG-TERM SATISFACTION WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS As we live longer, older adults have every expectation of preserving their chewing ability and oral health. In cases where tooth replacement is necessary, dental implants have emerged as the most natural-looking and best functioning option. To best gauge how dental-implant patients feel about their dental restorations, a questionnaire was sent to 587 patients, eight to fourteen years after their procedures. Of the 400 individuals who responded, a great majority (81 percent) indicated that they experienced high chewing comfort. The mean time elapsed since implant installation was 10 years. Fully 94 percent of those answering the survey said that they were satisfied or sufficiently satisfied with the aesthetic aspects of their implant restorations.

prevent you from smiling, take care of the problem with the help of your dentist. Here at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we care how you feel, and we’ll work with you to help you achieve optimal oral health, from implants to complete restorations to cosmetic enhancements. For gentle dental care for everyone in your family, using the leading-edge techniques, equipment, and materials available today, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. According to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study, 90 percent of the dental-implant patients surveyed rated the procedure as “good” or “excellent.”

It’s hard to smile with satisfaction when you have oral issues. If missing, neglected, damaged, or unattractive teeth

www.bataviafamilydental.com CONNECTING CAREGIVERS TO LOCAL RESOURCES AND SUPPORT (NAPSI)—Americans are living longer these days. The number of older adults is expected to reach 73 million by 2030. With 30 percent of Americans serving in a caregiving role, it is important to remember that caring for a loved one can be both rewarding and difficult. Often, caregivers don’t know where to turn for advice and assistance. That’s where the Eldercare Locator—a program of the U.S. Administration on Aging and administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a)—Comes in. By connecting older adults and their caregivers to local resources and support, the Eldercare Locator makes life a bit easier all around. The Eldercare Locator connects older adults and their caregivers to local services and supports across the spectrum of need, including in-home and community-based services, transportation and healthy aging. What It Offers Some of the Eldercare Locator’s more popular publications are: • “Before You Give Up the Keys: Create a Roadmap for Transportation Independence” • “Older Adults and Medication Safety” • “You Gave, Now Save: Guide to Benefits for Seniors” • “Living Well with Dementia in the Community: Resources and Support.” Learn More: For tips and advice on caregiving, visit www.eldercare.acl.gov or call 1 (800) 677-1116 and see @eldercarelocator on Facebook and @EldercareLoc on Twitter.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: A column in a popular consumer magazine states that taking a baby aspirin daily does more harm than good, and it should not be taken unless you have heart disease. I have been taking a baby aspirin daily for 10 years, and now I’m concerned. Your thoughts, please. -- G.D. ANSWER: Experts disagree on the best advice. Some points, however, are not controversial: Aspirin is beneficial for reducing future heart risks in people with established heart disease, but it increases the risk of bleeding events. Some of these are minor, but a few are potentially life-threatening. According to a recent review of published studies, in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease, a daily aspirin reduces the risk of a nonfatal heart attack by about 20 percent, without significantly changing stroke risk or risk of dying from heart disease. Risk of bleeding is increased by 50 percent. Also, newer evidence suggests that aspirin may decrease the risk of some cancers, especially colon cancer. Aspirin is more likely to have a net benefit in people with higher risk of heart disease, even if it isn’t diagnosed. The decision of taking aspirin should be made after a thorough review of all your individual risk factors, including heart disease risk and history of bleeding, and possibly colon cancer risk. When I discuss aspirin with patients, I very seldom recommend it to anyone with no known coronary disease who has had a significant side effect (such as bleeding) with aspirin in the past. As more studies are failing to show benefit, these recommendations may change. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? -- V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes. Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The booklet on COPD explains in detail both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Come & Pick ‘em Farm Blueberries! Fresh Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. PLAYING MOTHERHOOD FOR LAUGHS (NAPSI)—If any of America’s estimated 74 million kids are yours, an uproarious new book may be for you (and make a great gift for any mom you know). As you may have found, parenthood is not for the fainthearted. It’s often a mayhem marathon filled with exhausting days, punctuated by public outbursts, poison control phone calls, and poop (everywhere). But you’re not alone. About The Book The book, “Parentally Incorrect: True Tales by Real Moms About the F**ked-Up Things Their Kids Have Done” (HCI), comes straight from Tracey Tee and Shayna Ferm’s irreverent mom-to-mom comedy tour, The Pump and Dump Show. Created mostly from cards by women across the country who confessed the craziest, most exasperating, unforgettable things their kids have done, it also features Sad Cake moments-those little bummers that deflate you; Stump the Breeder trivia questions; Awesome MOMents drinking games; and Lies We Tell Ourselves Before We Have Kids. The idea behind the book is to help parents everywhere realize that the insanity that can happen is in no way a reflection of their worth or skills. Where To Find It It’s available in stores everywhere and on Amazon at https://amzn.to/2w3vzlZ.

Early Tuesday evening, I pulled my car into GearHeadz Auto Repair on Rt. 15 in Avon. My car had been acting very strangely, and the battery light was on. Michael Rubert asked me to pull my car to an open bay door. My car refused to start again. I had just finished my second day of work at a new job, and my two children were still at daycare, waiting for me. Mike didn't hesitate. He offered me his van, complete with the necessary car seats, to pick up my children. Then, even though his business hours had ended before I even walked in the door, he offered to repair my vehicle that night, the next morning at the latest. He drove to an auto parts store several

The condition of the old family cemeteries in the [local town] are a disgrace to the early settlers and their families who made the town what it is today. The pioneer cemetery across the street from my house has been mowed but only twice this year, and the second time they mowed they didn't even trim around the headstones. Another of the

towns away just to get the necessary part for my vehicle more quickly. When an issue arose, he was still there when I called, thinking I would leave a message, at 10:30 at night! Mike's kindness and his willingness to go above and beyond have earned both my gratitude and my future business. Thank you, GearHeadz! We'd like to thank everyone who supported the 26th annual St. Agnes School Golf Classic in Memory of Michael B. Hayes. This is a great celebration of our wonderful St. Agnes School and Genesee Valley community and a fond remembrance of our dear friend and brother Michael, and

we thank the players, guests, volunteers, the local businesses and patrons and the staff at Livingston Country Club and the Oaks for making our tournament a success! In today's day and age, we know your time and money is asked for a lot, and we want everyone know we sincerely appreciate your support. Thank you! Just wanted to say I appreciate people who pick up after their doggies and throw their baggies into any outdoor trash receptacles or toss them at home. You are doing a great job helping keep your area clean.

cemeteries had a large tree fall last year. All that was done was cut up the tree and leave it where it lays to this day. A few years ago, a lot of time and effort was put into fixing, straightening, and cleaning the stones in these cemeteries and cleaning the cemeteries in general. The surrounding towns do an excellent job of maintaining their cemeteries, why can't our town do the same? The [local town] deserves better.

delightful cheery flowers were mowed clear cut to the ground at their peak. Why? It doesn’t make any sense! They weren’t trees that we have been told must be taken down to “secure the banks of the canal” These were delicate plants that brought much joy and delight to the walkers and bikers on the Path. Not to mention the good they do in attracting bees. NYS Canal Authorities, please leave the wildflowers alone! Keep the mowers in the shop!

My husband and I walk the Canal Path in our Village every day. Lately, we have been in awe of the beauty and rich display of wildflowers of every color, size, scent and type. Absolutely gorgeous! “Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as these.” A splendid display! Then the State came through. These

Those little rascals sure can push buttons. But the thing is that if you've got buttons then they're bound to get pushed. Why get angry? They're the children; we're the adults, aren't we? Let’s try harder to NOT let others decide the kind of people we're going to be, especially when the other people are children.

A huge thank you to those who helped me retrieve my dog who escaped from his harness while on a walk in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood on July 7. I didn’t get your names—a family in a van and a man in a white SUV—I’m so grateful for all of your help. Thank you so much!

Once again, venturing thru [local town] risks our personal safety because some people don't follow right-of-way traffic regulations - the Monument at the center of town is a TRAFFIC CIRCLE & ALL FOUR routes entering said traffic circle are governed by YIELD signs, giving vehicles already proceeding within the clearly painted lane of the traffic circle the RIGHT-OFWAY... more than one vehicle can travel within the circle at the same time as long as a vehicle entering the circle DOES NOT infringe on the forward progress of any vehicle already within the traffic circle (a.k.a.; Right-of-Way) - The YIELD signs are large, bright, and clearly posted - if you don't understand traffic regulations: ask our local LEO to explain how it works before your severely injure yourself and/or others!! TNX!
