TIPS FOR

Farmers Market - SHOPPING For the best selection, go to the farmers market early. The best goods go first. Popular-but-limited items may even sell out before the day is done. It’s as simple as that. Planning ahead is essential. However, you need to leave a bit of wiggle room for those strawberries you didn’t know would be at market so early, or the zucchini blossoms you’ve never tried before. Trying new things is part of the fun of going to farmers markets. Get to know the merchants. There are a lot of great stories there, if you just take the time to listen. Smile and say hello. You can also ask them questions about where their produce is grown and if it’s certified organic.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

If you have trees that need to be removed, we highly recommend O'Neill's Tree & Landscape. We recently had several trees removed from our property and were very satisfied with the work they did. given to study was not on the final or only a small portion was included in our final exam.” I’m not certain why some teachers don’t create learning objectives, teach to those learning objectives throughout the year, and provide pretest refresher packets to study on those learning objectives, then test on the same. Seems like an easy process to follow and yet we’ve observed multiple instances where our children (and their friends) have shared specific examples that validate these circumstances. If the goal is to teach and have kids learn long term, please ensure consistency between what you teach and test Went to a moving up day ceremony – my granddaughter and her friends moving up, Rite of Passage. During the National Anthem a few people did not stand or remove their hat. Being a Vet I understand their right to dis America. I just think in front of these young adults, it is a poor example from adults who enjoy the Rights & Privileges in America and yet show disrespect

to America in front of these amazing young adults. These young folks learn from us (that’s why it’s the United States). It’s up to us together to show these young adults what is right. Thank you, A Vet It's getting OLD of the garbage men not picking up everything. I keep on having to call the legislature. I keep on having to call them. And we put NOTHING unusual in our garbage. The neighbors across the road and the neighbors next door can put out tons of stuff and EVERYTHING gets taken. I think this person needs to be replaced, because this is happening often and I think this is being intentionally done. I can’t be calling this waste company to keep on coming back to get what is left on the lawn. About holding a child on your lap when mowing, it is a dangerous thing to do. Turn off the deck, give the kid a ride around the yard, and then put him (or her) off the tractor and away from the mower. Child safety is the business of everyone.

It’s a shame....that the "I Gotta Vent" section is twice the size of "Brighter Side." I am a woman. On Saturday morning, I went to an estate sale a few houses over from mine. Of course nothing was priced. (I find this irritating...apparently people want to sell but are too lazy to come up with a price). I asked the gentleman who was running the sale for a price on items downstairs. He rudely passed over me to assist a woman in a short dress with plenty of cleavage showing (remember, this is an estate sale, not a bar). When he could finally make time for me, I asked him for prices on an assortment of screws, nails, etc. He replied, "That's a boy thing." Really? In 2018? Women cannot buy hardware? Needless to say, I left immediately. I simply cannot fathom this man's behavior... it was rude, crude and disrespectful. This man needs to step out of his cave.

Stony Brook State Park Reaches Capacity During Heat Wave By Amanda Dudek Go Figure!

Overflowing with glade-like greenery, stone steps and tables and a “natural” pool created by damming part of the brook, Stony Brook State Park, a gem nestled along a wooded hill just outside of Dansville, is a popular destination for hikers and families alike. However, did you know that, not unlike an enclosed venue, Stony Brook State Park has a visitor capacity? On July 4th, 2018, capacity was reached, and visitors were turned away at the entrances. Once the number of visitors again fell below capacity, drivers were again granted park access. This can lead to frustration and disappointment for visitors who have driven some distance to enjoy all that Stony Brook has to offer. Similarly, the park pool, formed within the brook itself, can be closed for various reasons, and those visiting for the express purpose of taking a swim can sometimes find that the park is open, but the pool is not. There are, of course, simple ways to avoid the frustration and disappointment of being surprised by these events. It may surprise you to realize that finding information on park closings, reached capacity and pool closings is not as simple as checking online before heading out. Stony Brook State Park, like its fellow state parks, does not have its own website. Rather, it is a part of a website entitled, “Reserve America.” On Reserve America’s website, newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com, you can find the details and descriptions of each state park as well as make reservations to camp at state parks; however, the site does not provide up-to-theminute information.

Stony Brook State Park does have a Facebook page, and they do announce park closings, full capacity and pool closings within a reasonable time frame. facebook.com/StonyBrookStatePark/ Even so, the best way to check on both park capacity and pool status is to simply make a phone call to the park office: (585) 335-8111. ␣ ␣␣ Should you find that the pool is closed, even temporarily, you may wish to use that opportunity to explore the other activities that Stony Brook provides, such as taking advantage of the enjoyable playground area, replete with play structures, climbing structures, slides and swings. QR Squares offer additional information around the park. Activities Include: • Camping • Swimming • Snowmobiling • Hiking Trails • Picnicking Areas • Skiing Areas • Fishing • Playground • Baseball Area • Tennis Courts

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longtime situation starts to move into a new phase. The question for the uncertain Lamb right now is whether to move with it. Facts emerge by midmonth to help you decide. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A talent for organizing your priorities allows the Divine Bovine to enjoy a busy social life and not miss a beat in meeting all workplace and/or family commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What began as a dubious undertaking has now become one of your favorite projects. Your enthusiasm for it rallies support from other doubters-turnedbelievers. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Accept the help of friends to get you through an unexpectedly difficult situation. There’ll be time enough later to investigate how all this could have happened so fast. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Change is a major factor for the Big Cat through midmonth. Be prepared to deal with it on a number of levels, including travel plans and workplace situations. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not like all the changes that have begun to take place around you. But try to find something positive in at least some of them that you can put to good use. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s unsettling experience could create more problems if it’s not handled with care and love. And who’s the best one to offer all that? You, of course. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It might not be the right time for you to start a new venture. But it’s a good time to start gathering facts and figures so you’ll be set when the GO! sign lights up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sagacious Sagittarius should have no trouble deciding between those who can and those who cannot be trusted to carry out a workplace commitment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Surprise, surprise. It looks as if that one person you once thought you could never hope to win over to your side suddenly just might choose to join you. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might have to set aside your pride for now and accept a change that isn’t to your advantage. Cheer up. There’ll be time later to turn this around in your favor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your creative self emerges as dominant through midmonth. This should help you restart that writing or arts project you’ve left on the shelf for far too long. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of encouraging others by example to come out from the shadows and enjoy life to the fullest. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

The m any benef it s of aut om ot ive roof rack s Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

DOAN E-Z AUTO 5018 RIDGE ROAD WEST 352-1111 AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Get a healthier glow. Many people equate health and vitality to tan skin. However, spending time outdoors in the sun or using indoor tanning beds that expose you to UV rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, including dangerous melanoma. The American Cancer Society says melanoma will account for more than 73,000 cases of invasive skin cancer in 2015. Melanoma accounts for more than 9,900 of the roughly 13,000 skin cancer deaths each year. Sunless tanners and bronzers can give skin that sun-kissed look without the downside of exposure to UV rays. Those who must go out in the sun should wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit their exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy DIVER’S MOUTH SYNDROME According to a recent study involving 100 certified recreational divers, dental problems can become more apparent or exacerbated under water. Researchers found that the most common problem reported by divers was “barodontalgia.” More popularly known as “tooth squeeze,” barodontalgia is the experience of a squeezing sensation or pain in teeth that occurs as changing air pressure forces any pockets of air in teeth (such as those found in untreated cavities) to expand and contract. Other divers reported jaw and gum pain, which was most likely caused by clenching hard on the mouthpiece, as well as the loosening of crowns. With this in mind, those planning on scuba diving are advised to visit the dentist first to help avoid “diver’s mouth syndrome.”

Ours is a unique, advanced facility at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, designed to provide patients with the most up-to-date, comfortable, convenient dental care possible. We provide all the dental services you and your family require, including fillings, crowns & bridges, periodontal care, complete restorations, implants, cosmetic procedures, nutrition counseling, and preventive care. We’ll keep an eye on your complete oral health at 6 Batavia City Centre when you join our ever-growing list of smiling patients. Call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. P.S. Scuba divers may want their dentists to evaluate their mouthpieces for fit and even distribution of biting pressure.

FRIDAY, JULY 27, 2018

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Know the ABCDE’s of Melanoma --DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1976, I had a mole on my right calf about the size of a pencil eraser. A biopsy showed it to be melanoma, and they thought they had removed all of the cancer, but they did another surgery to be sure that I was cancer-free. I am a natural redhead and never sunbathed or used a tanning bed. It has been 38 years, and I am still cancer-free. I get a skin check from my dermatologist every six months. At the time of my diagnosis, my family doctor said that if the melanoma spreads inside the body, “the ball game is over.” Is that still true? I know melanoma can be deadly. -- W.K. ANSWER: Melanoma is the most commonly lethal skin cancer. Although there have been some exciting new developments in treating advanced melanoma, the survival rate for stage IV melanoma, where the cancer has spread to internal organs, is only 15 percent to 20 percent at five years. Fortunately, the survival rate for melanoma caught early, at stage I, is greater than 90 percent, which is why it’s so important to know the ABCDE’s of melanoma recognition: A: Asymmetry - one half looks different from the other half; B: Border - the border in a melanoma is often irregular, not a near-circle; C: Color - melanomas usually are not a uniform color, like most benign lesions. Some areas are light brown, others brown-black, others red or pale; D: Diameter - greater than 6 millimeters, the eraser on a standard pencil; E: Enlargement or Evolution - any change in color, shape, size or symptoms (including bleeding). Any of these should prompt a visit to your regular doctor or a dermatologist. As an internist, these are the features I look for, and I have a very low threshold for sending suspicious lesions to my colleagues in dermatology. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. Surgery to relieve the nerve compression is successful in some cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. What is a seborrheic keratosis? Thanks to education and awareness about skin cancer, more people are taking heed of skin growths and changes and visiting their dermatologists. A spot or mole on the body can be a cause for concern. A seborrheic keratosis is one such type of skin growth that is actually benign but may cause concern due to its appearance. Seborrheic keratoses, or SKs, are one of the most common noncancerous skin growths, says The Mayo Clinic. Although anyone can get them, they are more common in middle-aged to older adults. Also known as basal cell papilloma, senile warts or barnacles, these growths form as a common sign of skin aging, according to DermNet New Zealand. The American Academy of Dermatology says a seborrheic keratosis may seem worrisome because it can look like a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth or even skin cancer. However, despite their appearance, SKs are harmless. How do SKs form? Seborrheic means “greasy” and keratosis means “thickening of the skin.” Despite the name, SKs are not known to be caused by an abundance of sebum in the skin, nor are they limited to areas of increased oil production. The exact cause of SKs isn’t known, but some doctors feel that an overproduction of skin cells can cause a thickening of the skin in certain areas. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology offers that SKs are most likely hereditary, and they often are found on the trunk of the body and where the face meets the scalp. Sometimes seborrheic keratoses may erupt during pregnancy, following hormone replacement therapy or as a result of other medical problems.

Thursday: Soup/Half Sandwich Vegetable Soup Roast Beef Sandwich Friday: Macaroni & Cheese

Appearance of SKs Some of these growths have a warty, rough surface, while others look like dabs of warm, brown candle wax on the skin. ADA says they can range in color from white to black, but most are tan or brown. The appearance of SKs may change as one ages, and it is even possible for them to fall off naturally over time. The Mayo Clinic says that, unless changes include becoming sore or bleeding without healing, there’s little need to act. SKs may form singularly, but often they appear in groups. Cancer risk? SKs have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to one’s health. Unlike moles, they will not turn into melanoma. The superficial nature of SKs mean they can become irritated by clothing and grow. Treatment Unless a seborrheic keratosis is in an area that causes constant irritation, there is really no need to seek treatment. However, dermatologists can remove them quite easily if they are unsightly or uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic, cryosurgery or laser therapy is possible. Generally little scarring is produced, offers AOCD. Although SKs are harmless, their appearance may be similar to skin conditions that are not. Those who are unsure about changes to the skin should always seek the help of a licensed dermatologist.

DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

24th Brockport Arts Festival August 11-12

VISUALLY IMPAIRED READER INSPIRES AUTHOR (NAPSI)—Four years ago, bestselling author Mary Jane Clark spoke at the Friends of the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped’s Fall Festival. There, she met Ottilie Lucas, a former rehabilitation teacher for people with macular degeneration and other disabilities who is visually impaired herself. After the festival, “we continued our correspondence and one thing led to another,” Lucas says of Clark. “She decided to include a character in her next book with macular degeneration.” And so was born Terri Donovan, introduced in the first book in Clark’s Wedding Cake Mysteries series, 2011’s “To Have and to Kill.” “Mary Jane asked me to give her ways to identify symptoms that a person may be experiencing macular degeneration,” Lucas says. These include blurred vision and difficulty discerning the intensity of colors—symptoms shared by Terri Donovan, who runs a bakery and is the mother of the protagonist of Clark’s series, struggling actress Piper Donovan. Lucas, who was born with retinitis pigmentosa, became a patron of the New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC) in 1966. TBBC is among more than 100 libraries across the United States affiliated with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress. NLS oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. NLS patrons may choose from tens of thousands of books and dozens of magazines in audio and braille-including mysteries such as Mary Jane Clark’s. NLS also loans the portable playback equipment needed to read its audiobooks. Patrons may access books online through the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service. Lucas has been married 49 years and has been on more than 20 ocean cruises. “Ottilie is such an inspiration,” Clark says. “She helped me so much in the creation of Terri Donovan—a mother who faces macular degeneration head-on, who doesn’t feel sorry for herself and is determined to adapt to the challenges she faces. I wish I were as brave as Terri and Ottilie!” To learn more about how the NLS program can help you, a loved one or a friend, go online to www.loc.gov/nls or call 1-888-NLS-READ.

HARMFUL INSECTS Certain insects can be dangerous to animals and plants. The following are a handful of insects that can threaten the vitality of gardens. • Aphids: These insects suck on the juice needed to sustain plants, particularly when they congregate.

• Bald-faced hornet: Hornets tend to be an aggressive species that can sting repeatedly. Should you find a nest near an entertaining space or garden, it can cause trouble. • Carpenter ants: These ants will burrow into wood causing damage. They may compromise any wooden structure in and around a home. • Locusts: Various species of locust can damage plants and crops due to their voracious appetites. • Treehoppers: These small, green insects mimic the look of leaves, and their appetites can affect crops and gardens. • Red pavement ant: As they feed on all manner of human food, these ants can quickly overtake areas with their staggering numbers and deliver painful bites. • Grasshoppers: Certain grasshoppers, like the redlegged grasshopper, can decimate food crops and transfer parasites to birds when eaten as prey. • Caterpillars: Many caterpillars, the precursor to adult moths, will feed constantly on leaves, stems and other parts of plants. The tobacco hornworm moth caterpillar can damage potato and tomato plants.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

ITEMS TO AVOID WHEN COMPOSTING • Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

Keep items dry. Address any moisture issues or leaks so that tools do not suffer water damage. Never operate power tools if cords are running through water.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.
