H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With your Arian charm quotient at an almost all-time high this week, plus all the facts to back you up, you just might win over the last doubters to your proposal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be in line for that job change you applied for. But be advised that you could be called on to defend your qualifications against supporters of other applicants. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new approach to an old idea is one way to get beyond that workplace impasse. No such problems in your personal life, where things continue to flow smoothly. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be more forthcoming about your feelings concerning a proposed change either in your workplace or in your personal life. Your opinions are valuable. Don’t keep them hidden. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A changing situation in your life needs more patience than you appear to be willing to offer. Allowing it to develop at its own pace is the wisest course you can take at this time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With more stability in your life -- on both personal and professional levels - this could be a good time to strengthen relationships with both friends and colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) People have always relied on your integrity not only to get the job done, but to get it done right. So don’t be pressured by anyone into cutting corners to save time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While others might get rattled over unexpected changes, your ability to adapt calmly and competently helps you make a positive impression during a crucial period. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A changing environment might be daunting for some, but the adventurous Sagittarian takes it all in stride. A friend from the past could awaken some meaningful memories. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your self-assurance rising to full strength, the bold Goat should feel confident about opening up to new ventures as well as new relationships. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Reaching out to someone who has been unkind to you might not be easy. But in the long run it will prove to have been the right thing to do. A friend offers moral support. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your keen insight once again helps you work through a seemingly insoluble problem in your workplace. The weekend offers a good chance to develop new relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a knack for finding details that others would overlook. You would make a fine research scientist. Scholarships can help students offset the rising costs of a college education. Those who are willing to put in the research, time and effort to apply may find a wealth of scholarship opportunities at their disposal.

Scholarships come in different forms and are usually offered to students as a gift to be put toward college or university costs. Some schools offer scholarships, while other scholarships are sponsored by outside organizations.

Light the way for safer nighttime driving Routine vehicle maintenance protects drivers on the road while also protecting the often considerable financial investment they make in their cars and trucks. Maintenance guidelines have changed thanks to technology, but drivers must continue to care for their vehicles to ensure the safety of themselves, their passengers and fellow motorists. From the time they first get behind the wheel, many drivers recognize the need to periodically change their oil and have their tires rotated. But few drivers may understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ headlights, and just how compromised they and their passengers might be when driving with old, dimming or foggy headlamps. Burned out lights greatly diminish driver visibility and may even draw the attention of law enforcement. But headlight bulbs don’t just burn out overnight. As bulbs age, their light output gradually reduces due to use and factors such as humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers concerned about the efficacy of their headlight bulbs can take steps to improve their visibility when driving at night. • Accept your own vulnerability. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision. As a result, drivers’ visual acuity may be reduced by as much as 70 percent when driving at night. Cloudy, dim headlights only exacerbate that problem, further compromising the safety of everyone on the road. Avoid aggressive driving and always obey the speed limits, even when it’s late at night and roads are empty. • Learn to recognize headlamp clouding. According to the automotive lighting innovator Lumileds, sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and even chemicals used in car washes can contribute to headlamp clouding. Clouded headlamps often appear hazed and yellow and reduce headlight output considerably. Routine headlamp inspection can help drivers discover clouded lamps that can greatly compromise nighttime visibility. • Restore clouded headlamps. Clouded headlamps do not necessarily need to be replaced. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit can help drivers restore their clouded headlamp lenses. The kit employs a protective UV coating that effectively restores yellow, hazy lenses that

have been compromised by years of exposure to the elements. • Replace headlamps that are past their prime. While not all clouded headlamps need to be replaced, some aging or outdated bulbs are best replaced with new models designed to produce substantially more light output. Drivers whose vehicles are equipped with standard halogen headlights may be surprised to learn that such lights typically begin to break down within two to three years of installation, during which time light output might be reduced by as much as 30 percent. Compared to standard halogen bulbs, Philips X-tremeVision Bulbs can put substantially more light on the road while producing longer beam patterns that make it easier for drivers to see more of what’s ahead of them at night. Drivers’ visibility is dramatically reduced once the sun goes down, but maintaining headlamps can help drivers combat that loss of vision. More information about headlamp maintenance and the alternatives to traditional halogen headlights is available at www.philips.com/automotive.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

Assisted Living or Enriched Care vs Nursing Home – Which is it for us? When looking for senior living options, Nursing Home and Assisted Living (or Enriched Care) terms are commonly misunderstood and are used as “catch all” phrases for “senior care” living styles. Senior living ranges from Independent Living to Assisted Living or Enriched Care, to the highest level of care, Nursing Home (or Skilled Nursing). To better understand a basic breakdown is offered as follows: Independent Living is a community of active adults provided supportive services typically including some or all meals, transportation, activities, some on-site staffing, emergency call systems in rooms or apartments, but no personal care. Residents are considered “Independent,” meaning they can manage on their own to take medications, manage dressing and grooming as well as bathing, and can get themselves from place to place with no or minimal supportive intervention (such as family making medical appointments, providing transportation or setting up medications). Assisted Living or Enriched Care provides meals, transportation, activities, laundry service, utilities, and emergency call systems plus oversight of medical care, assistance with personal care, cueing and reminders, and is licensed by the state, but on-site medical care (ie: wound care) or hands on physical care (ie: lifting) is not allowed by state regulation. Assisted Living or Enriched Care facilities are considered a wellness environment promoting independence within safe confines of a resident’s own ability, with staff and aides to assist in activities of daily living or during times of emergency situations. An assessment or evaluation is required to ensure proper placement and to create a personalized care plan for each incoming resident. This determines what care is needed and how care will be managed by the managing nurse and scheduled aides. Nursing Home or Skilled Nursing provides 24-hour medical care on a short- or long-term basis. It is a subacute care environment (medical based care). In Nursing Home facilities, aides and nurses can push residents in wheelchairs or physically help as residents walk, lift residents when unable to stand on their own, treat open wounds, provide medical care and medication administration, they often provide intensive in-house physical and occupational therapy, can manage most or all personal care and hygiene thus providing a high level of hands on personal care required to maintain a safe and healthy living environment. Nursing Homes are also licensed by their state, and are the highest level of regulation due to the medical nature of care received.

In other words, Assisted Living or Enriched Care communities are licensed facilities providing on-site 24-hour caregivers, that may or may not be certified, to oversee care, and in general manage a person’s well-being and safety. A Nursing Home or Skilled Nursing facility offers medical care and hands-on personal care around the clock, and may medically intervene on the residents’ behalf to ensure medical care, personal care and safety are managed on-site. Requiring assistance with daily living activities does not necessarily mean Nursing Home level of care. Nursing Homes require a specific evaluation (called a PRI) and must meet the needs of higher care to qualify for Nursing Home. Those who do not meet that higher care level are referred to Assisted Living or Enriched Care instead. Because Assisted Living or Enriched Care, and Nursing Homes, are separate levels of licensure, Assisted Living and Enriched Care cannot offer Nursing Home services. They are two very separate levels of care. As we have outlined, you do have to qualify to be appropriate for each one, per their specific NYS Department of Health regulations. In order to compare apples-to-apples and find the right senior care solution, it’s important to call on senior living communities and ask questions, as well as allow them to ask YOU questions. Senior living communities themselves can vary widely in what they have to offer. Be sure to ask questions about the different products and services provided on-site and how they apply to changing needs for their residents. Sponsored by The Manor House Senior Living, Independent Senior Living Community and Enriched Care Program, 427 E Main St, Batavia, (585) 344-2345. Visit their website at: www.themanorhouseasl.com to learn more about their Independent apartments and Enriched Care Program services.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

BOX LUNCH SPECIAL

5th Generation Shines Spotlight on Local Legacy By: Amanda Dudek In a day and age where moving away and families spread from coast to coast is increasingly becoming the norm, there is a refreshing continuity with the Marquart family of Darien, New York. Established by Robert “Bob” and Florence “Boots” Marquart when they moved to Darien in 1950, the Marquart homestead, a 110-acre, working farm, has been home to generations of this family for over half a century. However, it is more than beautiful, rolling acreage that has kept this family close for five generations. Bob and Boots Marquart welcomed the latest addition to their close-knit family, great-greatgranddaughter baby Jane Francis Schrodt, into the world on July 16th, 2018. Proud grandfather Bob had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of baby Jane, understanding that 5 generations is quite a milestone and looking forward to presenting his beautiful family in the local paper. In fact, the entire family is very excited about their sweet little new addition.␣␣“We’re just so happy that we lived to meet Jane,” Boots says. “Yes, both of us!” Says Bob. “God has truly blessed us,” they add. Great-Grandparents Cathy & Jeff Houseknecht, Grandparents Dani & Clarence Francis and especially the delighted parents Kate & Ethan Schrodt couldn’t agree more. The family’s harmony doesn’t end with baby Jane either. Says Kate Schrodt, “Our family is very close. I grew up across the road from my greatgrandparents and two sets of my great-aunts and uncles and next door to my grandparents. We would all get together, cousins included, for pizza Sunday night, and we still get together for tea time at least once a week if we can. The families often camp out by the beautiful pond on the farm in the summers. It’s clear that family has always been the most important thing to Bob and Boots, and each of the following generations have kept those same values.” Baby Jane is very fortunate to be the latest addition to such a family. ␣It is true that the family farm is lovely. Among its many features is a pond with a stone bridge that leads out to an island, spacious fields and beautiful woods and a creek. It has been the place of play and make believe for the past four generations. “I can’t wait to show Jane as well, making it five,” Kate enthuses. “There is something special about the fact

that, when you take a walk to the creek or run around in the field and swim in the pond, you know that generations of our family have done the same.” While the farm acreage, which the Marquarts purchased for $9,000 in the 1950s, may have remained largely the same, Bob and Boots Marquart recall how different things were when they first moved to Darien over 65 years ago. “There were no disposable diapers!” Boots laughs. Bob and Boots also recall that, when their own children were growing up, the school bus couldn’t make it up the hill on their dirt road, so the children would walk all the way down to the bottom of the hill, or the bus would have to go around. No doubt the four generations which still live on the farm land are grateful that their road is no longer paved with dirt! I asked this inspiring couple what their secret is to a happy marriage. In response, Boots shared that it was “having a husband that is so easy going” that has helped make their marriage successful. Congratulations, Marquart family, and may there be many more generations to come.

Should You Switch to Alkaline Water?

It’s a fact that you already know. A mammogram can find lumps in the breast long before they are found any other way. A mammorgram only takes minutes. If you are uninsured and 40-64 years old, it’s FREE. So, what’s stopping you from calling right now?

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy GETTING TEETH INTO BETTER SHAPE One of the most conservative cosmetic dentistry treatments dentists use today is also one of the quickest, most effective, and least costly. “Enameloplasty,” which also goes by the name “dental recontouring,” involves the precise removal of a small amount of tooth enamel in order to make a smile more pleasing or more balanced. The procedure involves the use of a drill with a small diamondtipped bit, or even sandpaper, to shave away a slight amount of enamel. The best candidates for tooth recontouring are patients with overlapping, elongated, or overly pointed teeth (in particular, the canine teeth). Enameloplasty does not require anesthesia because it does not affect the tooth pulp or nerves in any way.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: With everyone drinking a lot of water during the summer, I noticed that the water depot where I fill up my gallon jugs supplies water in different ranges of alkalinity, from 8-10. This seems to be a new venture for the depot. The owner sells the alkaline water from inside the store and claims the benefit of this water is to neutralize the acidity of the many products we eat daily. He suggests that one might start by taking water with a pH of 8 or stronger, then dilute it to one’s requirements. The purified water involves reverse osmosis so the company reintroduces calcium, magnesium and potassium to bring it up in value. Do you have any comments on alkaline water being consumed during this hot summer season? -- B.A. ANSWER: I recently have seen much confusion about acid and alkaline consumption. By adding a base to water, you raise the pH, making it more alkaline. You can do this at home simply by adding a bit of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to your water -you don’t need to buy alkaline water. Calcium carbonate is a common antacid. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are all elements we need, so in that respect, the alkaline water you are talking about is better than the sodium you would add to water with baking soda. However, the important point is that under normal circumstances your body does not need any help in maintaining pH or in neutralizing acid. The body’s systems are able to maintain pH under almost any dietary condition. Alkaline water is not necessary for health. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old, physically and mentally in good health. Fourteen years ago, I had a triple bypass, which was very successful. Since then I have had trouble with my blood pressure. The low always runs between 50 and 70, which is fine, but the high side is between 150 and 190, which is not good. My doctor has me on amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide. Is there any way to lower the high pressure without also lowering the low side? My doctor does not want to increase the dosages because it would keep me tired all the time. -- J.B. ANSWER: High systolic blood pressures in the elderly often are due to very stiff blood vessels. Since you have coronary artery disease, I think it’s likely that you have calcium in your large arteries, which make them unyielding to the degree that the rush of blood from the heart drives the pressure up very high. It may be impossible to lower the pressure without causing symptoms, so I understand your doctor’s concerns and position. When I think about treating blood pressure, I think more about trying to prevent bad outcomes (like stroke and heart attack) than just treating a number. There is good evidence that ACE inhibitors, like ramipril, reduce heart attack risk in people with known risk factors, so I might try a very low dose to see if it helps the blood pressure without making you feel fatigued or lightheaded. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS In addition to fresh produce, farmers’ markets may offer baked and other prepared goods. Shopkeepers often mingle with their customers, offering trade secrets and recipe ideas. Additionally, local farm families supported by farmers’ markets generally offer supreme customer service to keep shoppers coming back week after week.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

Shop Smart For Vintage Signs Antique shops are one venue for antique signs and coordinating pieces. Some sellers specialize in vintage signage. Antique stores are popular in many tourist towns and major cities, where more artistic neighborhoods tend to include one or more antique shops. If a particular antique store does not have what you are looking for, they may be able to secure certain pieces you desire from other vendors. Shoppers looking for antique signs also can purchase reproductions. There are many retailers that produce very good likenesses that may be considerably more affordable than the originals. You also can commission an artist to reproduce signage that fits with your design plans. Some research online or a query of artists in your community may yield prospects who can produce the sign you covet.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Students can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertainment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.

I would like to thank the staff at Highland Hospital for taking care of my husband during his time in need. Special thanks to those in the ICU and on the 7th floor. Doctors, nurses, social workers, the entire staff were all very professional, caring and informative, and thanks to all of you he is doing so much better! Thank you to the Johnsons for fixing my porch! I didn't know who else to call and you came right down! Thank you so much! Don't know what I'd do without you! I am so blessed to have such good friends! Thank You!

Thank you to the nice couple behind me at Wegmans who paid the difference in my bill.

respect for our beautiful lake district & our summer visitors. Who determined marriage for a female should be synonymous with the loss of her identity (June 8)? If my future husband insists on sharing the same name, it's his choice to change to Mr. Jane Doe just as it's my choice to keep mine. I'm also disturbed by archaic, sexist terms such as (man and wife). It implies ownership on the part of the husband. As a culture, we've become cognizant of disparaging terminology which only serves to divide the races. Let's use the same political correctness in the words we use to equalize not divide the sexes.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

We can help match your skills to our available jobs!
