HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might need to get more facts to help you work out those problems with your new project. As always, a friendly approach shows the charming Arian at his or her persuasive best. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information is what energizes ambition, and this is a good time for the ambitious Bovine to expand his or her range of knowledge and to be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to consider making some long-overdue decorating changes at home or in your workplace. A splash of color can help raise spirits, even on the grayest day. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Learn more. Earn more. That’s the formula for Moon Children looking to expand their career horizons. Investigate the best places to get those training courses you’ll need. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your creative side helps gain attention for many of your ideas. But don’t neglect the practical aspects involved in implementing their move from paper to production. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A health problem should not be ignored. The sooner you check it out, the sooner you can deal with it and then move on. Some job advice comes from an unlikely source. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A relationship takes an unexpected shift that could leave you puzzled and hurt. Asking for an explanation could help uncover the reason for this sudden turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your busy schedule has drawn down much of your energy levels. Restore them by spending a wellearned time out enjoying the arts -perhaps with that special someone. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Make that presentation with confidence. Remember: When you show you believe in yourself, it helps persuade others that you truly know what you’re doing. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you usually prefer doing things on your own, a group effort might be advisable at this time. Try to keep an open mind about suggestions from colleagues. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) This could be a good time to reassess some of your recent decisions and see if any adjustments should be made based on facts that you might have just uncovered. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An emotionally charged situation creates uncertainty about the future of your relationship. Best advice: Talk things out while there’s still time to reach a new understanding. BORN THIS WEEK: You tend to act on matters of principle despite what others might advise. Upcoming Batavia Wine Walk Set to be a Real By: Amanda Dudek “Show Stopper” On October 6th, the 8th annual Batavia Wine Walk will bring area wine connoisseurs and novices alike the opportunity to get together with friends and neighbors for a leisurely stroll through their community while enjoying several superb, New York wines. This year, 25 local businesses have joined the Batavia Wine Tour to serve as tasting locations. Each local business will represent a different New York winery. Wine Walk guests are provided with a program with a guide to these stops and are welcome to visit them within the three-hour event in whichever order they choose. This year’s Batavia Wine Walk begins with its first stop at the Batavia branch of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. VIP guests may arrive an hour earlier and receive special perks such as a goodie bag and a free raffle ticket for entry in the Batavia Wine Walk Basket Raffle. Three, quite large baskets are being raffled off this year, and they are filled with very nice products and gift cards from local restaurants and businesses. All participants receive a commemorative wine glass and a program with the tasting locations guide. Participants are then free to weave through local businesses and become more familiar with these establishments, particularly the ones which are stops along the walk. This event is great fun for businesses, too. Downtown Batavia BID Executive Director, Beth Kemp, states that while some businesses may choose to have a simple, straightforward, winery display and tasting space, several others become much more involved with the theme of the walk, providing food, treats, music and other goodies to Batavia Wine Walk guests. An award with accompanying prizes is given to the business with the best participation. This variety of tasting environments from business to business has provided guests with an enjoyable experience, each year bringing new, little surprises. This year will be the second year that the Wine Walk has also had a theme. Last year,

many guests joined in dressing up for the first ever Batavia Wine Walk Theme: the 80s. Several business owners decorated for this theme, as well. This year, the theme is movie characters, and we have it on good authority that there might be some good, old-fashioned, Hollywood red carpet glamour involved, as well. While dressing up is by no means necessary, best movie character awards and prizes will be given, on an individual and group basis, to some of those who choose to do so. The Batavia Wine Walk will sell only 600 tickets, 150 of them VIP passes, to keep the event somewhat more exclusive. VIP passes are $35 while General Admission tickets are $25. Designated Driver tickets are also available for $5, as guests are encouraged always to drink responsibly. Tickets, especially the VIP passes, do tend to sell out for the Wine Walk. They are currently available online at www.downtownbataviany.com. Tickets are also available at three area businesses: The Yngodess Shop, Adam Miller and The Hidden Door/ Pollyanna & Dot. The Batavia Wine Walk runs from 5pm to 8pm and is a fun way to get out and about with friends and family and, of course, great wine.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy THE FLAP OVER WISDOM TEETH When the third molars (“wisdom teeth”) do not have sufficient room to erupt through the gums, a partial eruption can lead to inflammation and infection of the soft tissue around the tooth. This inflammatory condition, known as “pericoronitis,” commonly occurs among young adults in their 20s, with about 81 percent of those affected being between 20 and 29 years old. The infection often occurs as a result of the development of a gum flap over the partially erupted tooth, which traps food and allows a buildup of bacteria that cause infection. Chronic symptoms include dull pain, a bad taste in the mouth, and swollen gums, while acute symptoms range from severe pain and pus discharge to swollen lymph nodes.

Whether dealing with wisdom teeth, restorations, or cosmetic dentistry, a good experience with dentistry is based on two things – choosing the right dentist whom you trust and who is up to date on the latest in dentistry, and taking the necessary steps to keep dental problems at bay through self-care at home between professional visits. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we work with you to maximize your oral health. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre; please call 585.343.4246 if you’d like an appointment. P.S. Pericoronitis can be averted with regular dental checkups.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Common Pain Reliever Can Have Side Effects It’s a fact that you already know. A mammogram can find lumps in the breast long before they are found any other way. A mammorgram only takes minutes. If you are uninsured and 40-64 years old, it’s FREE. So, what’s stopping you from calling right now?

FREE MAMMOGRAM

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Genetics may be the biggest culprit in undereye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one’s face - paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area - can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 44-year-old man with chronic headaches and migraines. Should I worry about the long-term effects of taking an NSAID (such as diclofenac) at least once a week? -- G.W. ANSWER: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are among the most commonly taken classes of drugs in the world, with 17 million Americans alone taking them daily. Although these drugs are generally safe, any medication has the potential for side effects. Typically, the higher the dose and the more frequently it is taken, the increased risk of side effects. So, a once-aweek dose would be expected to have a low side effect risk. Adverse effects from this class are among the most frequently seen in clinical medicine. Although they can affect multiple systems, let me briefly go over the side effects of NSAIDs on the GI tract, kidneys and heart. NSAIDs might affect the stomach, and although we think of ulcers, stomach pain without ulcers is more common. Ulcers happen most often in people who take higher doses for long periods of time. A history of ulcers, older age and use of other medications (steroids, warfarin, antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, or Plavix) increase the risk of ulcers and bleeding. NSAIDs also might affect the small bowel and colon, causing bleeding and diarrhea, among other symptoms. Again, these are most common in high doses for extended periods. NSAIDs can affect the kidneys, causing both acute and chronic kidney failure, but only in a few percent of people. Periodic blood and urine examination is appropriate for people who are on long-term NSAIDs. The risk of heart disease among people who use NSAIDs regularly is increased, but in people without known heart disease, the risk is small -- about one bad event, such as heart attack, stroke or episode of heart failure, per thousand people taking the medication for a year. I would advise you that the risk of any of these side effects is unlikely in someone taking the drug only once a week, but people who take these drugs every day should know about the potential harms. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When I was 64, a cyst was found in my bladder. When the cyst was removed, it was found to be cancerous. My urologist wants me to continue to have an annual cystoscopy, which I do. I’m now 76 and in good health. Do you feel the annual cystoscopy is still necessary? -- C.K. ANSWER: Now that more people have had successful treatment of cancer, we are starting to learn about the risks they face in subsequent years. The risk of another cancer is generally higher, but it’s the exact form of cancer that determines how much risk there is, and consequently, how aggressive follow-up must be. In the case of bladder cancer, I have read some studies that the risk is quite small after five years. However, the American Urologic Association has clear guidelines: Because of the increased risk for recurrence, it recommends annual cystoscopy indefinitely. Cystoscopy is a pretty safe procedure, so I think your urologist’s recommendation is reasonable. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself.

Warning Signs A Tire Is About To Go Flat

AUTO SECTION

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER As the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

Tires often produce w arning signs that a flat or blow out is about to em erge, so drivers w ho w ant to avoid such unfortunate developm ents can inspect their tires for the follow ing signs. • Varying w ear: Tires should exhibit the sam e type of w ear. The w ear on front tires and back tires m ay differ, but one front tire should have the sam e am ount of w ear as the other and the sam e goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire w ith m ore w ear could be about to go out. • Worn tread: Em ploy the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, w ith George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires. • Low pressure: M ake sure their tires are at the m anufacturerrecom m ended pressure, w hich can be found in a vehicle ow ner’s m anual or by calling the tire m anufacturer or visiting their w ebsite. An under inflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blow out. • Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively m ay do so because tires are dam aged. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should im m ediately take the car to their m echanic for an inspection. • Physical damage to the tire: Som etim es tires exhibit physical dam age like bulges or cuts, and such signs could m ean a flat tire or blow out is just around the corner.

Thank you Genesee Valley Penny Saver for being such a great partner and great paper in all the communities you serve. Mark Farruggia President of Friends & Families of Muscular Disorders Foundation The beauty of country living is common-sense thinking, respect for the natural world and defense of the institutions of democracy. Common-sense is the application of basic logic to obvious facts in making decisions; respect for nature requires application of the best scientific knowledge to

I recently took my dog to the [Local] Vet Clinic in [local town] for a tooth that fell out. I wanted to get an antibiotic for him. During the visit no gloves, creams, ointments, needles, paper products, or peanut butter was used. No medical waste was generated at this apt. My bill however had a 3.50 fee for medical waste. I was told this is an automatic fee that OSHA is

preserve the integrity of our air, water and soil; the institutions of democracy include the independent branches of government, and the Bill of Rights: a free and independent press (media) to serve as watchdog or whistle blower of corruption, the right to form armed militias to defend the ‘people’ against abuses of power, prevention of interference of religion with government policy and vice versa, equal treatment and opportunity for ALL people and respect for the spirit of law (applied to leaders also).

Thank you to Julie of Julie's Floral! Once again, your 1st day of school floral arrangements were awesome. What a wonderful surprise! We appreciate your thoughtfulness so very much.

now charging. I paid the bill with cash. Went home and got online with OSHA Chat and they said no - this is not a new regulation from them. They said the Vet Clinic has to pay fees and they are pushing it off on the clients whether there was waste or not, to cover their costs. With the fees they charge us now, I think this is so unjust. We are trying to make ends meet as it is and keep our pets healthy and happy. So not right! To our neighbors who live across the street from us who feel the need to give my younger sister the middle finger whenever you see her outside, what kind of message are you sending to your young children who are with you when you do it? If you even bothered to take the time to get to know her, you would have found out that she is autistic and doesn’t know what she did wrong

to deserve you flipping her off whenever you see her. She is an amazing girl who is friendly and says hi to everyone and waves to people as they walk by. So the next time you see her and she waves at you, be a decent person and wave back; you will make her happy and you just might make yourself happy as well; besides, if you don’t want to be civil to your neighbors, maybe you shouldn’t have moved into the village. Congratulations to the group(s) who've succeeded in ruining the [local] Boardwalk for everyone. Seems it became 'Party Central' for a select few and they chose to throw their empty beer bottles, cans, liquor and soda bottles directly into the watershed rather than disposing of them responsibly. When the trash accumulation was not enough of a thrill, they elected to kick out the safety slats on the walkway railing,

I just want to say that the wall in Geneseo looks really great! There is still more to do but what has been done so far, it really looks nice. I know it is hard work and look forward to seeing more of it being completed as time goes on. Eagle Scout Project Support I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through

my recent project that benefited the Habitat for Humanity. This includes the individuals who donated to my project, the Avon Rotary also providing funding, and Avon Lumber and Avon Hardware for providing materials for my project.

thus, forcing Village officials to place a steel barricade with a 'NO TRESPASSING' sign across the entry way to the platform. Ironic isn't it? The vandals no longer have access either. Don't know what it will cost to repair, or if it ever will be repaired but, I DO know, that it was a mindless act. I hope this will not be their greatest life accomplishment. The road crews posted construction signs on [local road] from [local town] to [local town] months ago but no work has been started. The road is in despicable condition!! Are they just teasing us with the signs, or are they actually going to repair the road? It's in such bad shape that it is useless getting an alignment done, and it is ruining my tires. Come on [local county], get to work and replace this disgraceful highway!!

Lynn Bezon,

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? Plus, your party may lead to reciprocation from others.

Addicted seniors a serious problem: Opioid use among the older population The public is quickly learning that drug abuse goes beyond the illegal substances that are purchased on the street. Abuse of drugs extends to the prescription medications sitting in many medicine cabinets. While teenagers and young adults may be the first to be stereotyped as prescription drug abusers, seniors may have unwittingly become mixed up in one of the most misused prescription classes: opioid pain relievers. The problem of opioid abuse has been a growing issue for years. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance abuse of opioid pain relievers. Older patients are increasingly and repeatedly prescribed opioids to address chronic pain from arthritis, cancer and other problems that become more apparent as people age. Data from U.S. Medicare recipients found that, in 2011, roughly 15 percent of seniors were prescribed an opioid after being discharged from the hospital. When followed up on three months later, 42 percent were still taking the medication. Fast forward to 2015, and almost one-third of all Medicare patients were prescribed opioid painkillers by their physicians, says AARP. The Canadian Institute for Health Information says adults between the ages of 45 and 64 and seniors age 65 and older had the highest rates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisoning over the past 10 years. AARP also indicates nearly three million Americans age 50 or older have started to take painkillers for reasons beyond what their doctors prescribed. Experts from the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing warn that dependence on opioids can set in after just a few days. Discomfort and side effects can occur when the pills are stopped. Opioids can decrease pain at first, but many people find they can be less effective over time. As a result, patients need to take greater amounts. Although many people can take opioids in small doses for short periods of time without problems, many find

Opioid abuse is a problem for all age groups, including seniors.

themselves overcome by a troubling addiction. Some doctors prefer not to use opioids as a first line of treatment for chronic pain. Another possible risk of opioids among seniors is that the medication can cause disorientation that may lead to falls and fractures. The senior care resource A Place for Mom also says that prescription narcotics may increase risk of respiratory arrest. What’s more, an older body may not absorb and filter medicines as effectively as younger bodies can. This means that older adults might become addicted to or have side effects from a prescription drug at a lower dose. Seniors concerned about opioids can discuss other options with their doctors, such as nonopioid medications and alternative therapies for pain management, like massage or acupuncture. If opioids are prescribed, ask for the lowest dose and don’t exceed the time frame for taking the medicine. Only take the pills when absolutely necessary, and never mix opioids with alcohol or other substances.

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
