Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Mia. I’m a 5-year-old Chihuahua. I love to spend time with my Mom wherever she is in the house. I am a good snuggler, too! I love to chase ping pong balls and play fetch with Dad and my big sister. When it thunders I get a little nervous and shake but my Mom holds me and calms me down. This picture was taken right after I got a haircut! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

REMODELING Keep Winter Energy Bills in Check (Family Features) As w inter temperatures drop, the potential for higher utility bills goes up. Taking steps ahead of the cold season can help you trim costs and make your home more energy efficient, keeping those utility bills in check even as the w inter w eather rages. Before w inter w eather sets in for your part of the country, take some time to assess your home for potential problem areas and improvements that can help low er your energy costs. Lighting. Though turning off unneeded lights is a smart strategy any time of year, it’s especially helpful during the w inter months w hen utility expenses can add up. New technology lets you manage your lights aw ay from home using an app on your smartphone. Water heaters. Heat isn’t the only system that gets an extra w orkout come w inter. Cooler house temperatures may require w ater heaters to w ork harder, so ensuring you have a model w ell-suited to your family’s year-round needs is key. In fact, heating w ater is the second source of energy use in the residential home after space heating and cooling, w ith standard electric w ater heaters costing the average homeow ner $585 every year to operate. Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is easy to install and saves energy (and money) by automatically adjusting to predetermined temperature settings. Air leaks. An airtight house is critical to managing your heatrelated expenses. Sealing cracks around those w indow s and doors, and other leak-prone areas such as the basement and attic, w ill help keep heat inside and costs dow n.

70th Anniversary SeriesAs we continue down our path of GVPS history, one of the most important aspects of our business is the weekly delivery of the Penny Saver to every home in our circulation area. We include the counties of Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Genesee, Orleans, Steuben and Wayne. In our infancy, about 1000 papers were produced each week which covered Avon, Caledonia and Geneseo. Today we’ve grown to over 150,000 papers delivered into 80 towns. No small task to get all these papers to their appointed destination. Approximately half of our delivery is by adult carriers with either driving or walking routes depending on the area. The other half is distributed through the US Postal Service. Our carrier routes are carefully mapped out and delivered either to a GVPS tube installed by us in front of the home or bagged and placed on the porch or hung on the doorknob. Coordinating the Post Office deliveries and carrier routes is an important job. Shari Rapone, our Circulation Manager, has been employed by us for nearly 30 years, and has supervised the weekly delivery of our Penny Savers for nearly 25 years. Her duties include hiring carriers, arranging routes and handling absences which can sometimes occur with little notice. Shari sometimes needs to find substitute carriers quickly and has often gone out herself to complete a route. She also keeps track of the carriers’ employment information, routes, mileage and weekly pay. She works with the Post Office weekly as well, filling out postal permits and being sure the papers are bundled according to delivery routes. Also, Shari prepares information for our semi-annual audits by Circulation Verification Council (CVC), which provides audit reports for over 3,500 publications in North America. For the past 13 years, we have received their Gold Standard Award which ranks us in the top 1% of publications in North America and first in New York State for our extensive “Reach”, “Readership” and “Response.” A CVC audit report shows all our circulation numbers and is like receiving the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for publications. They, as well as we, closely monitor these reports as a way of determining how well we are doing our job, for both our advertisers and our readers. For our 71 adult carriers, we have 164 carrier routes in total with Penny Savers being delivered every Friday, or Saturday morning if necessary. Our carriers do a great job for us and often need to deliver in rather harsh weather conditions. Four of our carriers have been with us for over 25 years and 27 over 10 years. As we celebrate our 70th year in business, we want to continue to express our gratitude to those who have made it possible. To our current carriers who are listed here, as well as the many who have worked for us throughout the years, we are very grateful!

3 money-saving travel tips for retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. 1. Take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. 2. Don’t overlook travel agencies. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access

to the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors to their countries want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. 3. Travel as part of a group. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it’s with a retirement community, religious organization or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters. Many working professionals hope to spend the bulk of their retirement traveling the globe. While such a goal is potentially costly, there are various ways to save and still see the world.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Beware Use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s Disease --DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s disease? My chiropractor wants me to take it because my mother had Alzheimer’s. She says her father is doing well and not progressing. What do jellyfish have to cause this result? I have not seen any research from medical facilities that back this up. -- L.C. ANSWER: I could not find any peer-reviewed literature that supports the use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s disease or other neurological disease. The manufacturer has unpublished data on its website that suggests there may be a benefit in memory. There is also a study in rats that suggests the active protein, apoaequorin, may protect nerve cells against loss of glucose and oxygen. This protein was originally identified from luminescent jellyfish but is made synthetically in Prevagen. The rat research result is surprising, since proteins are normally broken down in the GI tract, and would not be expected to have activity in the brain. There are reports made to the Food and Drug Administration of serious adverse events from this product. A supplement is not required to show its benefit; in fact, the product information for Prevagen clearly states that it is “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.” I don’t recommend using this product until there is clear, peer-reviewed evidence that it is better than placebo. In my mind, taking any treatment -- drug or supplement - to prevent a condition requires the highest level of certainty. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 50-year-old female. How accurate are the results of fecal blood tests? In May, then July, I saw what looked like blood in my stool. My GP ordered the fecal blood test, three smears over three days. Results negative. Then in November I saw it again. My doctor said since the fecal test showed no blood, there is no blood. My sister had colon cancer at age 45. I have had pre-cancerous polyps removed every three years for the past 10 years. Can I trust the fecal blood test results? -- S.C. ANSWER: The fecal occult blood test uses an enzyme that causes a color change in the presence of heme, a component of hemoglobin, the major protein in blood. Although the fecal blood results are pretty accurate, they can be erroneous in two ways: a false positive and a false negative. A false positive means the stool test is positive when there is no blood. This can happen from eating raw vegetables (many types, especially turnips and radishes) and meat. A false negative can happen in the presence of large amounts of vitamin C, but more importantly, many lesions of the colon, including colon cancer, bleed only intermittently. In my opinion, someone with a history like yours, including precancerous polyps and a family history of colon cancer, should have a colonoscopy as the screening test rather than stool cards. READERS: The booklet on colon cancer provides useful information on its causes, symptoms and treatments. To order a copy, write: Dr. Roach -- No. 505W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com. © 2018 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

I work for a delivery company. Generally, I find that customers don't see me as a fellow human being, but rather as a conduit for their latest online whim. In particular, I dread the holiday season, because I don't spend it with my family--I spend it with other people's "stuff." I was eating my "lunch" at 7pm outside a gas station before Christmas when I noticed you running into the convenience store. I saw you come out with a gallon of wiper fluid and watched as you approached my truck. I thought you might ask me to help you, so I set aside my sandwich and looked for my gloves. Instead, you handed me a gift card to a doughnut/coffee shop. I was touched by your thoughtfulness toward someone you've never met. It made me feel less Scrooge-like and buoyed my spirit. Thank you so much.

Thank you Partyman Catering and The Cake Place for the delicious luncheon and desserts we enjoyed at our Holiday Party. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver Staff This past Friday I had the pleasure of fine service from three wonderful professionals who obviously take great pride in what they do! First was Wendy at Canandaigua Post Office, who was not only friendly and efficient, but showed several options on a complicated transaction to get the job done at reasonable cost. Next, Leroy and family who own PennYan Sewing Machine were extremely helpful in keeping older machines serviced and ready for another year of hard use. Then our faithful UPS man, Todd, who does Honeoye deliveries, was cheerful and conscientious as

and that one is being used by what appears to be an able bodied person. In comes an individual with limited ambulation obvious enough to require sitting while bathing their perspiration-laden body. First I want to stress the "apparent" able bodied person, as I know all too well that disabilities can be misleading. For instance my wife with MS (multiple sclerosis) appears on the exterior to be fine walking from her vehicle parked in a handicap spot. If you did not know you would suspect he or she would be abusing the Once again, thieves are stealing handicap tag on said vehicle. If you money from farmers' produce stands. are handicapped, I do not mean to Enough! Farmers work from early AM direct this to you. The others ... well. to late PM and yet you are willing to break into their money box because of What is the thinking behind what you want. Get a job! putting animals in a cage in 'their home' for hours and hours... or First, picture this; men’s shower locked in a garage or in a facilities at a local health club. All 8 windowless cellar? always, despite the often heavy, bulky, and constant parcels he brings to keep our farm and home supplied. We are indeed blessed to have these and many more fine people making life easier! We would like to thank the staff at the LeRoy Village Green for such wonderful care that they gave our father with his rehabilitation after his partial hip replacement. It was greatly appreciated.

me the ring. "Her name is inscribed inside." I said her name. You handed me the ring. I was so abashed I could barely utter thanks. You said, "I'm glad I found it. Maybe it came off when you removed your glove. You should go to a jeweler and ask that they make the ring smaller so it won't slip off." You turned and walked to the doors of the hall above the library; so little, pretty and brave.

You stopped me in the parking lot above the library. You said, "Did you lose your wedding band?" I removed a glove and there a bare finger. I said, "I usually wear it when I go out." You said, "Come with me. I'll show you where I found it." On the way you stopped and showed

Why lock a cat or a dog in a cage and think this is okay? Do you like the idea of saying you have a pet? Or of maybe once in a while walking the dog? Or once in a while playing with the pet? Caging is cruel and stupid. Take the time to train an animal properly and enjoy the rewards of a loving pet. Or, find a good home with people who actually care. Some of us hear dogs barking for a long time while locked in a garage; some of us know cats or dogs left in basements day after day; some of us know dogs of all ages locked in cages except for a few minutes in the back yard! Be kind to animals. Please, I beg you; contact your local animal control officer to report this animal cruelty. Nothing will be done for this poor animal unless you or other concerned folks speak up! This dog deserves better than this. PLEASE speak up and report this!

I play golf twice a week [local area] and have lunch in [local restaurant]. Two weeks ago I was there for lunch with a group of golfers, removed my beige cable knit cardigan and placed it on the back of my chair. Unfortunately, I neglected to bring it home with me and when I realized what I had done, called the restaurant to see if the sweater was there. "Oh, yes, we hung it in the closet by the front entrance." The following week I returned for lunch, but the sweater was not there. It had been taken. Well, folks, that is stealing! There are hats and other garments in that space that have accidentally been left there, but my sweater has found a new home. Shame on you! Sorry there are such dishonest people out there. Very disappointed in my fellow man.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

LIFE AFTER DEATH It is interesting to note that, although young adults’ affiliation with religious institutions may seem to be on the decline, the vast majority of younger adults believe in an afterlife. A survey involving 58,000 individuals showed that four out of five younger adults between ages 18 and 29 believe in some sort of afterlife. Over the past fifteen years, the percentage of those in this age group who identified themselves as religious fell from 49 percent to 38 percent. Over a longer 40-year period, the percentage of those believing in an afterlife increased from 73 percent to 80 percent. In fact, those in younger generations were more likely to believe there is life after death than older ones. Life is full of opportunities to show someone we love them. One such opportunity is the funeral or memorial service. Such a loving event celebrates the choices they made, the relationship you shared, and honors the memory of your loved one. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Prattsburgh: January 22, 2018 at age 74. Predeceased by her husband Salvatore Galletta, parents Ralph & Edith Spiller, and step-son Gary Galletta. Survived by daughters; Angela (David) Blood, Cara (Eric) Riesdorph, and Jennifer (Corey) Hawkey; step-daughters; Melanie Galletta and Carol (Robert) Schneider; daughter-in-law Mary Galletta; granddaughter Leah Blood; 7 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren. Also survived by brothers Edward (Carolyn) Spiller and Robert (Christine) Spiller, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends especially Lucille McHugh, Robin (Andrew) Nistock, and Julie Lovejoy (Todd “Red” Rhodes). Diane spent most of her life on Long Island, growing up in Elmont and pursuing her education and career, earning a Masters degree in education. Later she raised her family in Massapequa. She was a devoted wife and mother, raising her three daughters while taking care of her husband during illness. She was an elementary school music teacher, and enjoyed arranging chorus concerts for the school children. After her retirement, she moved to Prattsburgh, New York to the area she had always loved; often on trips upstate she would call out for everyone to “appreciate the scenery”! She loved music, and often attended local concerts and recitals. She loved all animals, but especially her horses, cats and dogs, and enjoyed volunteering at the SPCA. She enjoyed taking family vacations with children and grandchildren. She loved going to craft fairs, bake sales, library sales (often later donating back all the items she bought), playing cards, putting together puzzles, and seeing movies. She was selfless, loving, and incredibly generous to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her as mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. Friends called on Thursday, January 25th, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 8624 Main Street (Rte 20A), Honeoye, NY where Diane’s Funeral Service was held on Friday, January 26th, at 11am. Burial Canadice Hill Cemetery, Canadice, NY.
