Shoppers across the country routinely make the holiday season one of the biggest spending periods of the year. American Research Group, Inc., said that in 2015 the average predicted expenditure on gifts equaled $882, which was up from $861 the previous year. Many holiday shoppers worry about whether or not they will have enough money for gifts, while others anticipate using credit cards or other financing methods to stretch their abilities to spend even further. This can make the holiday season more stressful than it needs to be while affecting finances into the new year. Budgeting for the holidays is a great way to keep spending in check.

Furry, finned and feathered friends help make a house a home. These companions are more than just pets; they’re often cherished family members. So it should come as no surprise that, come the holidays, people want to lavish extra attention on their animals by way of presents. The American Pet Products Association says pet owners spend billions of dollars on their pets each year. The majority of pet owners plan to gift their pets on holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas. DogTime.com says that pet presents are not a North American phenomenon, either. Pet owners in the United Kingdom are expected to spend the equivalent of $46 U.S. per pet on gifts. While dog owners are more likely to buy their pets gifts, cat owners have been closing that gap over the years. Some pet parents even offer Christmas cards or hang Christmas stockings for their pets. According to data from PricewaterhouseCoopers, shoppers between the ages of 17 and 21 are willing to spend more than anyone else ($70) on holiday gifts for their pets. Gifting pets has become the norm, but various animal welfare organizations advise that giving companion animals as pets should be avoided. Pets given as gifts may be at a higher risk for surrender to shelters by families who miscalculated the amount of time and money that’s necessary to care for pets. Welcoming a pet into the family is often a personal decision, and one that should be weighed carefully by all members of the household.

Thanks to all those who came to my husband’s rescue when he fell October 31 in the driveway at the Livingston Skilled Nursing Facility. What a bunch of caring and helpful people. Thanks again to all. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas. My daughter and I were walking on the Trolley Trail on Saturday, November 10. It was very cold and very windy, and our orange, white, and blue BB8 Blanket fell out of the stroller. We didn't notice until we got home, and it was too cold to take her out again. The next morning, we went out looking

There are certain stores in my area that always have only one (or on rare occasions, two) cash registers open. It drives me absolutely NUTS that people will be in line with at least fifty items and will very clearly see me or someone else behind them in line with only one item but not offer to let us ahead of them. Please consider this the next time you are shopping and the person in line behind you has only an item or two. I promise, it takes mere seconds to for us to get through the line.

for the blanket, fearing the worst. However, a nice person had found the blanket, and tied it to a post so that we would see it and so it wouldn't blow away in the wind. Thank you very much! You've made my threeyear old very happy. She says, "thank you," and didn't let go of BB8 until we got home and I made her put it in the washer. Thanks again! I am ashamed that I have to write this. But then I hear that the [local town dept.] has put a stop to the FoodLink Food Truck from providing food to the community in their parking lot. The people who used to go and get food were people who needed that extra help once a month. ONCE A MONTH! And the [local dept.] will not even allow this. I thought that it was the town's taxpayers who paid for the parking lot, so shouldn't they be able to use it once a month? [Local dept.] ought to be ashamed of themselves. blood work results. Mainly I was concerned about my thyroid #. You should know my name after 10 years and maybe know why I am there. When I arrived, my 1pm appointment was really 2pm. They said sorry we were swamped this morning (they close between 12-1pm for lunch). When I finally was brought to the examination room, I was told the doctor would be in shortly. 35 minutes later, my doctor came into the room and said, “good news, your blood work came back great!" Once she took the time from my 5-minute visit to glance at her computer, she noticed my thyroid was off the charts. She thought her mistake was funny! I did not! Needless to say, I’m in the process of finding a new doctor.

SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

Canandaigua’s Jeanne Crane Brings Celtic Ireland to Life Celtic wisdom teaches us that there are thin places where the curtain that separates our world and the spiritual one becomes but a sheer veil. Such thin places are something long-time Canandaigua resident Jeanne Crane has explored and experienced deeply, both in Ireland where her new novel takes place and in her own hometown of Canandaigua, the lakes and rolling, green hills of which often remind her of the Irish countryside. In fact, in Crane’s newly released novel, Amidst the Stones of Celtic Ireland, it is in Southwestern Ireland that lovers Abby and Mark find themselves surrounded by Celtic mystery, miracle, mysticism and magic. A former Program Director at Finger Lakes Community College and a successful Organizational and Leadership Development Coach and Consultant, Jeanne Crane was at last able to transform her love of travel, especially to Ireland, into a new career as a writer, presenter and workshop facilitator once she retired. Travel to Ireland gave her the opportunity to develop her passion for the stone circles of Celtic lands and explore Celtic thin places in Ireland all the while immersing herself in Celtic spirituality, lore and wisdom. Crane has also learned much about the history of Ireland, particularly the history surrounding Neolithic sites and other ruins. Jeanne Crane’s Amidst the Stones of Celtic Ireland creates an alluring balance between the earth and beyond, the physical and the spiritual, the feminine and the masculine with grounded Mark seeking out lighthouses and sensitive Abby drawn to stone circles, ancient Celtic church ruins and the voices that call to her. Crane’s intoxicating mix of history and drama, realism and intrigue will have readers at once pondering the Mother/Divine Feminine, ancient religion, local myth and history while at the same time relishing every luscious detail of Abby and Mark’s relationship as it unfolds. A timely novel, Jeanne Crane’s latest work explores the concept of sovereignty - of the land, of women, of communities and countries. Amidst the Stones of Celtic Ireland is Jeanne Crane’s second novel. She has also written, Celtic Spirit: A Wee Journey to the Heart of It All, and a series of pictorial travel books: Snapshots of Ireland: Pictures and Notes on Travel - Cork - Kerry - Clare and Limerick Galway and the Aran Islands. All of her books are available on Amazon and locally at the Cheshire Farms Creamery book rack in Canandaigua. Jeanne Crane continues to pursue her interests in sharing Celtic stories. “Passion for the Stone Circles of Celtic Lands” is the topic of her presentation at the Victor Library next January. It is the first in a series of presentations and book signings being planned for spring 2019. She is also starting a new blog on her website, JeanneCrane.com, discussing these Celtic themes. Jeanne Crane’s relatable characters and first-hand descriptions of Ireland bring a magical Celtic experience to every reader’s fingertips.

Being truly thankful for friends, family and the many good things in one’s life can create that joyful state of mind which often overflows into good will and compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. Regrettably, with the push to purchase following so closely upon the heels of, and in some cases even preceding, Thanksgiving, this “heart-healthy” Spirit of Giving is all too often lost in the following flurry of activities. For this reason and several others, Giving Tuesday was started. Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and after the prime shopping days of Plaid Friday, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. While there is certainly much festive fun to be had in preparing for the holidays and selecting the perfect gifts for our friends and loved ones, balancing this with a mindfulness of those in need is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others, to our children and even to ourselves. For the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, this isn’t just a pleasant, seasonal platitude, these are words we live by. We practice giving back to our community in our pages and beyond. Each week, free of charge, we announce upcoming Non-Profit Events which boosts community support for non-profit and local charitable causes and community support organizations. Adoptable pets receive our help finding homes by sharing their photos in our Pet Place section. We are also privileged to bring you inspirational and interesting Hometown Stories from all over our readership area. Libraries are provided the opportunity at no cost to publish announcements on educational activities for the community, professional training programs, literacy programs and more in our Library Columns, while many organizations are able to ask for assistance thanks to our Who Can Volunteer section. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver also supports local schools, literacy, the fight against hunger, MS research and other causes. We encourage all of our readers to take time on Giving Tuesday to find a way to help those who are struggling this holiday season. Giving money is only one way to help; gifts of time, food, acts of service and even simple holiday cards can make such a difference in the lives of those who are struggling or lonely this year. Visit www.givingtuesday.org for more information on this global initiative or connect with charitable organizations in your own community. You can search through Non-profit events and local volunteer opportunities on our website at www.gvpennysaver.com. “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” — Winston S. Puzzle Answers Crossword Puzzle

Submitted by Geneseo Community Main Street

Geneseo Community Main Street is once again hosting fun, family-friendly events for this yearís Christmas in the Village, a yearly tradition for families all around Geneseo and surrounding towns to begin celebrating the cheer of Christmas. Cookies, elves, horse drawn wagons, caroling, tree lighting and Mr. & Mrs. Claus will make Main Street feel like a cozy winter wonderland on this bustling Saturday, December 1st afternoon. Community members begin their Christmas festivities with the Main Street Elf Stroll. Children can pick up their scavenger hunt cards at local participating businesses and begin searching for sneaky elves hiding in plain sight in businesses along Main Street. These scavenger hunt cards will be turned into Sweet Arts Bakery by 5:00 pm, on Saturday December 8th. The more elves they find, the better their chances of winning Bear Bucks! Bear Bucks are Main Street currency that can be redeemed at any participating Main Street business, for pizza, books, cookies, toys & more! There will also be one Grand Prize winner who gets to take home a paperweight of the original Emmeline Wadsworth Memorial Fountain. At 1:00 pm, the Cookie Stroll will begin. The cost to participate is $10 and there will be a limited number of tickets available at EventBrite beginning November 6th, and at Sweet Arts Bakery or the Not Dot Shop. Registration dayof will be at the Big Tree Inn and the Tompkins Bank of Castile. Participants will receive a map to explore Main Street and stop by businesses who will have delicious cookies from local bakeries to gobble up or save for later. While walking around, be on the lookout for some of the SUNY Geneseo Acapella groups. The South Side Boys, the Geneseo Emmelodics, and Between the Lines will be rotating between participating stores throughout the day to carol and bring Christmas cheer to all of those who participate! If the next shop is just a little too far to walk on a full stomach, the Horse Drawn Wagon will be the perfect break to regain your cookie appetite. Wagon rides will run from 1:00 pm 4:00 pm, circling from the center of town to the Wadsworth Homestead. And if you stick around late enough, you may bump into Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus as they stroll Main Street from

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other and potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. Improve crossword-solving skills Crossword puzzles are an integral component of newspapers. In addition to their entertainment quality, crossword puzzles can help improve cognition and brain health in individuals of all ages. The first known crossword puzzle to be published was created by a British journalist named Arthur Wynne, who is often credited as the inventor of crosswords. The first puzzle appeared in the New York World on December 21, 1913. The original crossword was diamond-shaped and did not feature the familiar black squares. Throughout the 1920s, crossword puzzles became a standard offering in many newspapers. During this period, puzzle shapes evolved to the more familiar form, and certain puzzle standards were established. LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Does Hole in Heart Increase Stroke Risk? --DEAR DR. ROACH: Articles on strokes or TIAs rarely mention that they can be caused by a congenital heart defect. I had a family member with a patent foramen ovale, found at age 54, after he’d had several strokes. He had surgery to repair it and has been well ever since. I would like to know why a PFO isn’t often mentioned or considered. When I see an obituary for a young person who died suddenly, I wonder if there was an undiagnosed hole in the person’s heart. One in 6 people has a hole in the heart; that is a high percentage. I think the public should be educated and made aware of this congenital condition. -- J.R. ANSWER: A patent foramen ovale (which literally means “open oval-shaped window”) is a remnant of our embryology. The foramen ovale is a small open flap that is necessary to send oxygenated blood from the placenta to the body of the developing fetus. In about 25 percent of people (that’s 1 in 4, even higher than you thought), the “hole” doesn’t completely close. PFO is the most common of the “holes” in the heart (ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defects are the other common ones). A stroke is caused by the death of brain cells. PFOs are certainly implicated in strokes. In general, the younger and healthier the person, the more likely it is that a “cryptogenic” stroke (one with no obvious cause) may be due to a PFO. What is likely is that a blood clot can pass through the foramen ovale and go to the brain’s blood vessel, blocking off blood supply to an area of the brain, causing a stroke. The absolute increase in stroke risk is hard to quantify. For people who have never had a stroke, it is generally not recommended to close the PFO. This surgery has risks, and these risks probably outweigh the small potential benefit. For people who have had a stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke from PFO is higher. One group has created a model (the RoPE score) to help predict the likelihood of recurrent stroke. This can help the clinician examine the benefits of surgical repair of the PFO. Surgery is most likely to benefit younger people without traditional risk factors for stroke. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that letting vinegar touch your skin causes arthritis. Is there any danger in using vinegar as a cleaning agent? -- N.J.A. ANSWER: I often get asked whether apple cider vinegar cures arthritis (it doesn’t) or can help relieve symptoms (it might, but there is no good evidence that it does), but I have never heard anyone ask about vinegar touching the skin causing internal problems. Vinegar is a mild acid (most are about 5 percent acetic acid), which normally isn’t particularly irritating to the skin, and shouldn’t be absorbed. Even if it were, acetic acid is found in the body (it’s an important molecule in several metabolic pathways), and your body can use it as an energy source. There is no reason to be concerned about being exposed to household vinegar. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

THE GRAVESIDE SERVICE After the funeral, the “committal” (or graveside) service is conducted as the coffin is lowered into the ground. This short ritual is usually attended by the immediate family members, other relatives, and closest friends in order to have the opportunity to say their final good-byes. It also often includes the shoveling of dirt and the placing of flowers onto the coffin. Regardless of the type of funeral that precedes it, the importance of the committal service rests with its chance to give the living a chance to eulogize the deceased. Beginning with a short prayer reflecting the religious and cultural affiliations of the deceased, the committal service continues with spoken testimonials that commemorate the deceased’s life in an intimate setting. A funeral service can mark the significance of the life that was lived. They also help us find meaning and purpose in our continued living, even in the face of loss. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY, facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count.
