INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Despite growing up in a family with strong ties to organized religion, Saint Patrick himself was not raised in a particularly religious household. Though his grandfather was a member of the clergy and his mother was a close relative of St. Martin of Tours, Saint Patrick’s childhood home was not especially religious nor was it one that placed a strong emphasis on education. In fact, Saint Patrick admitted later in life that his lack of formal education had long been a source of embarrassment for him.

No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. ~Proverb ENJOY IRISH COFFEE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.”
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. ~Anne Bradstreet

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Unnecessary Procedure on Terminal Patient --DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother has stage 4 cancer. She just went to a dermatologist, who performed Mohs surgery on her nose. I am BEYOND upset by this unethical behavior. The country is already deeply in debt, and Medicare is paying for this? Unconscionable! Not to mention the pain and suffering of my mother, who is now at risk of a secondary infection. I was sickened by the entire ordeal. -- J.B. ANSWER: I agree with you completely that often patients with terminal diseases receive unnecessary care. There have been studies clearly documenting this. However, the studies don’t answer why, in a particular case, a physician performed these treatments, which add only pain, anxiety and expense. I suppose it is possible that the motivation is simple greed; however, I still have enough faith in my colleagues that I think that is a very unusual reason; I think it’s far more likely that a specialist just doesn’t see the big picture. There’s an old expression that when all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail, and I think some specialists see a problem and fix it without realizing that the problem they are fixing isn’t likely to ever cause symptoms. For example, primary-care doctors order unnecessary tests, especially screening tests. I see mammograms ordered for women with advanced colon or ovarian cancer who are in palliative care, and this makes no sense. I have heard some physicians mention that insurance companies monitor the frequency of “quality indicators,” such as mammograms, which affect their ratings and reimbursement. That’s an example of a well-meaning system motivating wrong behavior. I should emphasize that not all care for terminal patients is useless. If the goal is to improve quality of life or reduce suffering, then I am all for it, after a consideration of the costs (pain and inconvenience as well as dollar costs). *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a bloodborne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

And Spring arose on the garden fair, Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast rose from the dreams of its wintry rest. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley, “The Sensitive Plant”
H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Congratulations, Lamb. This is the week to finish your project and then bask in your well-earned approval. (And if you like, you also can say “bah” to all those detractors.) TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The bold Bovine could find a new opportunity too intriguing to be ignored. But don’t charge into it. Go slowly so you see how things develop as you get more involved. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might try to soften your stand on that important issue. A little more flexibility actually could get you what you’re looking for. A new friend enters the picture midweek. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your inner voice is on the mark when it advises you to tackle that family problem now! The sooner you’re able to come to terms with it, the better it will be for everyone. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Someone reveals important news about a longtime associate. But before you decide how to deal with this information, make sure it’s reliable, and not simply self-serving. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some intensive soul-searching early in the week can help you reach a decision by week’s end that should please both you and the other person involved. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The possibility of a career change is intriguing. Learn more about what it can offer and what it cannot. Weigh everything carefully. And ask questions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Work is your priority this week as you try to make up for lost time. Expect help from someone who cares about you. Things take a welcome turn by the weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A health problem causes some anxiety early in the week. But prompt medical attention soon eases everyone’s concerns. Enjoy an arts-filled weekend. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As much as you might resent it, a changing situation could require you to adjust your plans accordingly. The good news: An associate agrees to cooperate. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) That old problem is finally resolved, just in time for you to take on a new work-related project. This one could be the super door-opener you’ve been looking for. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The early part of the week presents some difficult hurdles. But once you get over them, you can start to focus on matters that are more important to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and your dedication to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult that might be. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cruising tips and tricks Cruising can be an ideal vacation for people of any age, but particularly for seniors. Cruises combine all-inclusive meal packages with accommodations, breathtaking ports of call and pre-arranged activities, so vacationers do not have to lift a finger for days on end. Cruising also can be a social activity, meaning singletons can meet up with other like-minded people and enjoy the cruising experience together. Cruise Lines International Association, a global organization advocating for the cruising community, found that 25.8 million passengers expected to take a cruise in 2017, and various cruise companies invested more than $6.8 billion in new ocean vessels.

Lena Jane Cratsley (Rowley) March 10, 2018 Honeoye: Lena Jane (Rowley) Cratsley passed peacefully on March 10th at the age of 86. She was predeceased by Alfred, her husband of 66 years, her parents Gilbert & Annabelle Rowley, brother Gilbert Rowley and her sister, Edna Ingerick. She is survived by her children, Bonnie Thayer, Bruce Cratsley, Betsy (Don) Shaw and Brian Cratsley, 6 grandchildren; Raphael, Adrian, Todd, Tammy, Benjamin & Emily, 6 great grandchildren, brother-in-law & sister-in-law Arthur & Priscilla Cratsley, brother-in-law Joseph Ingerick & several nieces & nephews. Fondly known as Jane, she was born in Webster on February 9, 1932. At the age of 4, her parents moved back to Richmond on Reed Road where she grew up. At the age of 16 she met Al Cratsley at a dance in Hemlock, fell in love and married at the age of 18 on June 13, 1950. Al & Jane were a team throughout their marriage. In the early years, they owned an excavation business installing wells, driveways, septic systems & breakwalls all the around the area. After injuring his back, Al moved onto roofing and siding. Jane learned to measure and cut shingles & siding and helped Al do the installing. Then in 1965, they opened Cratsley Bait Farm. Jane stayed home and ran the business, selling live bait & tackle and renting boats. When age would no longer let them do the roofing/siding and bait business, they closed both and went on the road selling gourmet meats door to door for Anchors Away in the southern tier and northern Pennsylvania. Jane was the navigator, remembering where all their customers were located and keeping Al from getting lost. As age and health issues took over, they stayed home and Jane became Al’s caregiver while she battled her own issues. They would enjoy playing dominoes and other games and watching college basketball. Jane had always wanted to be a nurse so when the Richmond Fire Dept opened their company to women, she joined and became a member of the ambulance squad. For 35 years, she and Al would drop everything and run out the door to a call. Jane was always proud that she had delivered a baby. She also was elected as treasurer and held the position for 37 years and 8 years for the exempt club. Jane enjoyed deer hunting & fishing with Al and she was very good at both. She loved the outdoors and was always found working in her garden and flower beds or watching her kids play in the yard. Jane also loved to crochet and made over 30 sets of afghans/pillows and loved to crochet doilies. Family & friends may call on Friday, March 23rd, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 8624 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye, NY where services will be held on Saturday, March 24th, at 11am. Private burial Lakeview Cemetery, Honeoye. In memory of Jane, donations may be sent to the Richmond Fire Dept. PO Box 469 Honeoye, NY 14471. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com
Clark grew up in Canadice, NY and graduated from Honeoye Central School in 1953 where he lettered in football and basketball. He attended Cornell University and earned an associate’s degree in agriculture. Following graduation, Clark stayed in Ithaca and started his professional career managing one of the dairy barns that was part of Cornell’s Agricultural program. In 1976, Clark accepted a position with Eastern AI, where he worked for the next 24 years as a supervisor of their young sire complex. In his spare time, Clark could be found biking around the Finger Lakes region or twirling Jane around the dance floor. He also enjoyed attending many of the local fairs throughout the region. But his biggest passion was being involved in his kid’s sports. If he wasn’t coaching, he could always be found in the stands, usually being the loudest supporter on the sidelines. Clark retired in 2000 and moved back to the family homestead in Canadice with Jane. He spent his time hiking the hills at Harriet Hollister and many of the other state parks in the region with the Rovers Hiking Club. He also loved to take road trips through the countryside to take-in the beauty of the local farming landscape. Clark was always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend, neighbor, or family member in need. He kept up his passion for sports by following many of the Honeoye High School sports teams no matter what the season. Friends called on Thursday, March 15th, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 8624 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye, NY. Funeral Service were held on Friday, March 16th, 11am at the Honeoye United Church of Christ, 8758 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Clark Affolter Memorial Fund, PO Box 362, Honeoye, NY 14471-0362 (this fund will be used to support athletics within the Honeoye School District). A MATTER OF PRESERVATION The practice of embalming became widespread in this country during the Civil War for the purpose of transporting the dead long distances to their homes for burial. Elsewhere, motives for preserving human corpses vary according to time and place. In ancient Egypt, citizens were mummified with the goal of gaining eternal life. In the Andes, the bodies of Incan emperors were preserved so they could continue to play key roles in society. In Japan and Tibet, holy men were mummified and revered ancestors were preserved for eternity so they could be consulted on important community matters. Mummies of prehistoric Britain were mummified out of respect for their protective powers and ability to intervene with the gods. Life is full of opportunities to show someone we love them. One such opportunity is the funeral or memorial service. Such a loving event celebrates the choices they made, the relationship you shared, and honors the memory of your loved one. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: In the wake of recent events, there has been a lot of discussion about the impact that playing violent video games has on today’s youth and the way that they react to situations. How do you think our youth are influenced by video games? • They are just games and do not encourage violent behavior in youth. • Games that focus on shooting the opponent make our youth believe that this is the way to overcome tough situations. • More research needs to be done to fully understand the impact.

Thank you to Shelly and Keni Read for helping me plow out my elderly mother's driveway on 3/2/18. While the snow was beautiful it was also very heavy. They used their snow machine to help clear the end of her driveway. Greatly appreciate your kindness and willingness to help out. Very fortunate to live in such a great neighborhood.

The Grinch is back again this Christmas in our well-to-do town south of Rochester. There are no Christmas lights along our Main Street, only dark dreary winter pennants. Several years ago, which was the last year our illuminated Christmas lanterns were put up, we noticed that there was
something wrong with them. Upon further inspection, many if not most of the lights inside them were burned out. The lanterns were still intact. Someone was either too lazy to replace the bulbs or it was planned to get rid of them. At least they gave a nice warm glow to our Main Street. All of the surrounding hamlets have Christmas lights except us. They have the Christmas spirit! Sadly dark winter pennants are a poor substitute for lighted decorations. Renowned Ballerina Aesha Ash Encourages Byron-Bergen Students to Dream Bigger By Christine Klem Ballet star Aesha Ash told the hundreds of students at Byron-Bergen Elementary that when she was growing up in Rochester, “there were no princesses or fairies that looked like me. There were no magical creatures, unicorns or swans that looked like me.” When she dreamed of being a ballerina, she was told that there were no black ballerinas, and that she would never succeed. She dreamed anyway, and she did succeed. She was accepted to the legendary School of American Ballet where she was chosen to join the New York City Ballet when she was 18 – one of the first black dancers in the corps. How did this world-famous dancer and winner of the National Women’s History Museum’s 2016 Women Making History Award, come to be in Byron-Bergen? Fourth-grade teacher Alyson Tardy heard about Ash’s Swan Dreams Project, which was founded in 2011. This project uses powerful imagery to counter negative stereotypes of race and socio-economic background and inspire children to dream bigger. She thought that Ash’s message would be a great tie-in to the school’s character education program. She invited Ash and coordinated the special visit. Students surprised their visitor with a hallway lined with artwork featuring swans of many shapes and colors. “The art is so beautiful,” said Ash. “I’m honored that the kids welcomed me this way.” At the crowded assembly, Ash shared her story with attentive students, beginning with her passion for dance and her determination to become a ballerina. She explained how she was part of Rochester’s Urban Suburban program, and constantly faced questions and misunderstanding from peers about her background and city neighborhood. Her family was not rich; she told

the story of borrowing toe shoes for her first tryout. Even when Ash became a professional ballet dancer, she felt a sense of not belonging, of being different. “All my life, I’ve fought to change perceptions and dispel myths – for myself, my family and my Rochester community,” she said. “The more that people told me that I couldn’t do something, the more I wanted to do it.” Ash’s professional dance career lasted 13 years. It included eight years with the NYC Ballet along with performing in the Bejart Ballet in Switzerland and Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, and with many other companies as a freelance artist. She and her family currently live in California where she is working to make the Swan Dreams Project an afterschool program. She hopes to open a studio where she can teach ballet to children who are not able to afford lessons. The Swan Dreams Project video she shared with Byron-Bergen students can be found at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v= 7h58rXzsNhU

Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.
