Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Danielle Nahas as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout PDS COINS
by Susan Cook Girl Scouts of Western New York are proud to announce Danielle Nahas of Spencerport, NY, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Nahas’ project, Helping Youth Meet Their Potential, involved creating a book for independent living targeted at young adults in at-risk situations. Nahas partnered with the Center for Youth in Rochester, which offers help and support for teens and youth who are considered to be at risk, such as those who have run away from home or have an unstable family. Knowing the youths would struggle to find an adult to support them as they transitioned to independent living, Nahas hoped her book would provide tips and serve as a guide to get them started.

Signs of atrial fibrillation — and how to treat it Palpitations of the heart or uncomfortable sensations in the chest can be distressing. Thoughts of heart attack may come to mind, and that anxiety can only exacerbate the situation. While heart attack might be the first thing people think of when experiencing chest discomfort, atrial fibrillation may be to blame for such feelings. Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that may lead to heart-related complications. The American Heart Association says that at least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFib. Although treatable, without proper diagnosis, AFib may lead to blood clots, stroke and even heart failure. Many people with AFib experience no symptoms at all and are unaware they have it until it is discovered during a physical examination. For those who experience symptoms, The Mayo Clinic lists these as some of the more common: • Palpitations, which can be sensations of a flip-flopping in the chest or even a racing feeling. • Fatigue • Reduced ability to exercise • Lightheadedness • Chest pain or shortness of breath • Dizziness and weakness
ECG, which will show the heart’s electrical activity as line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the tracings are called waves. An EKG will determine if the heart is pumping correctly. AFib is more common among people with clogged arteries or diabetes and may develop following valve surgery. AFib also is more common in people with coronary heart disease. As a person ages, his or her risk for AFib increases. Stress also can be a major factor in triggering AFib, according to StopAfib.org.
Once AFib is diagnosed, managing risk factors and restoring When the heart is working normally, it contracts and relaxes in a heart to normal rhythm becomes the priority. --DEAR DR. ROACH: My dental hygienist recommends rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs after flossing. Lately I have heard the using too much hydrogen peroxide can be harmful. What are your thoughts? -- T.W. ANSWER: Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antiseptic that has some usefulness for household objects; however, I don’t recommend it as an oral rinse. It is too toxic to tissues. In a 1993 study, even hydrogen peroxide solutions diluted to half and quarter strengths caused damage to mucous membranes and caused “overwhelmingly negative subjective reactions.” Thus they were not recommended for oral care. A regular mouthwash is a much better choice, and your dentist can prescribe a medicated mouthwash if needed. Incidentally, I don’t recommend hydrogen peroxide for cleaning cuts and abrasions, either. It isn’t effective at inhibiting bacterial growth. I recommend careful cleaning with mild soap and water or saline and an antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a blood-borne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy by an ophthalmologist, whom I saw for an eye exam recently. Would you please tell me more about this disease? Is there any treatment? What can I expect in the future? It is getting harder to read and do close work. -- N.O. ANSWER: Fuchs’ dystrophy is a condition of older eyes, which happens when the cells in the innermost lining of the cornea (the translucent, colorless front part of the eye) degenerate, causing, initially, deposits in the cornea and later swelling of the cornea. The disease has a complex genetic pattern of inheritance, and tends to progress slowly. Treatments include soft contact lenses to “bandage” the cornea, and eyedrops. Transplant surgery of the affected lining of the cornea (called Descemet’s membrane), or the whole cornea, is the definitive treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Count to 10 if you must, but don’t lose your temper, despite that person’s (you know who!) efforts to goad you into reacting. Your restraint will pay off in a big way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week finds you in a sociable mood, ready and eager to enjoy the company of family and friends. It’s also a good time to seek out and renew old friendships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Patience is called for as you await a decision about that project you’re eager to launch. Meanwhile, try to set aside more time to share with that special person in your life. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid becoming involved in a workplace dispute early in the week by insisting both sides submit their stands to a neutral arbitrator. Things begin to cool off by Thursday. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It promises to be a busy but productive week for the Big Cat. The pace slows by Friday, allowing you to catch up on matters you put aside but that now need your attention. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suddenly disruptive family situation is best handled with a cool, calm and collected response. Wait until things settle to let off all that pent-up emotional steam. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your practical side dominates the week as you reassess your finances to make some sensible adjustments in what you plan to spend and what you expect to save. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected meeting with a former colleague opens some interesting possibilities. But you need to press for full disclosure before making a decision. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent flurry of activity eases by midweek, giving you time to readjust your disrupted schedule and make new plans for a weekend getaway. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re usually the one who gives advice. But now it’s time to open yourself up to counsel from friends who have your best interests at heart. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might find resistance to your call for a full inquiry into a workplace problem. But by week’s end even the most rigid naysayers begin to come around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recurring problem surfaces once again. Maybe it’s time you used your creative talents to help you find a new approach to resolving it once and for all. BORN THIS WEEK: You are guided in what you do both by your intelligence and your emotions. An acting career would suit you quite well. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

A MATTER OF SAFETY In societies less advanced than ours, it’s not uncommon to read stories in worldwide media involving individuals being buried alive after the local authorities have incorrectly deemed them to be dead. The possibility of a premature burial occurring today in this country is nearly impossible, because a medical determination of death and a death certificate are requirements for burial. However, centuries ago, when comatose and unconscious individuals were not so easily distinguishable from the dead, it was possible for U.S. citizens to be buried alive. Consequently, so-called “safety coffins” were developed, which had devices (a string attached from the hand of the buried person to an aboveground bell) that would enable prematurely buried individuals to convey their status to passersby. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. Honoring the life of your loved one means you value the relationship you shared. We look forward to helping you decide how to celebrate that bond and honor the unique person you’ve lost. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. SEEING IS BELIEVING WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD SAFETY (NAPSI)—Although properly functioning vehicle lights, wipers and mirrors allow for better visibility while driving, these items are all too often forgotten or ignored when people perform basic auto care, says the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making sure that you can see and be seen on the road is essential to avoiding motor vehicle accidents, yet many motorists overlook simple maintenance steps that can improve driving visibility,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Following a few auto care visibility tips can be illuminating, helping to ensure the safety of you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. • Replace any exterior or interior lights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or nonfunctioning and be sure headlights are correctly aimed. • Make sure that vehicle mirrors are clean and properly positioned. • Check windshield washer fluid level and, when it gets low, replace it. • Replace wiper blades if they show cracking or if they chatter or streak when operating. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade. • When in doubt, turn your lights on to help you see and help other drivers see you. Some places even have laws that require headlights to be on when windshield wipers are operating. • Don’t overdrive your headlights. Maintain a speed that will let you stop within the illuminated area; otherwise, you create a blind crash zone in front of your vehicle. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website at www.carcare.org.

585-261-8506 Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Thank you so much to the kind woman at our local pool store who gave me a reference for a pool contractor. We have a nearly new pool from a friend of the family; it was brand new & up for 1 year & taken down for family business needs. We were left in the dust with another contractor after we made arrangements, including the permit & contract, to install the pool at our home. Afterwards, we couldn't find anyone willing to drive out of Monroe County or who would be 'possibly' available by late July. I called your reference (Greg) on Friday, who came to our house to survey the site & pool equipment. He said everything was in perfect shape & that he would get us installed this week. Kindness is hard to find. Thank you again for approaching me at the pool store & helping our family.
Every day we entrust our children to “strangers” and expect them to return home safe each night. These adults have been hired by our school district. This means they have been thoroughly checked and are deemed as safe adults. When teachers, counselors, and bus drivers make decisions and rules to keep our children safe they should not be questioned. When
On June 8th, my husband and I were having lunch at the Dutch Hollow Restaurant in East Avon. The waitress had picked up our dirty plates and we thought she picked up our bill by mistake to. We asked about the bill only to be told that someone had paid for our meal. This was so unexpected but so appreciated. I have done this for others in the past, and now I know how they must have felt. We were grateful and blessed. Many thanks to whoever you are. I will again pay it forward! God Bless, Robin and Rick Dieffenbacher I would like to thank the hardworking women of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Geneseo

We need to support our district staff. If problems arise while your child is learning and growing have the decency to communicate with the district staff. The adults in our community need to come together to help raise respectful children. Wishing you a great day!!
Anytime that you're in an accident the Integrity of the materials that make up the car seat have been compromised and should no longer be used! You simply add the car seats to the insurance claim and they will pay to replace them. I hope this message reaches many people that will in turn share with others.
