To the misogynist attention seeker who thinks that a woman should take on her husband’s last name when they get married. Why is it any of your business what other couples do? It is their own decision, and for whatever reason, the woman decided to keep or hyphenate her last name. We no longer live in the 19th century where women were property and obligated to take on her husband’s name to show that he owns her. Women are free to do what they want to do, and I am sure they discussed it with

We have spoken to our village neighbor about feeding the deer and squirrels. They have finally stopped feeding deer once I explained it was actually illegal, but they continue to spread peanuts all over their deck. It has now caused a huge problem; the deer and squirrels now destroy our perennial gardens that we have worked so hard for and spent so much time and money on. We have asked nicely to refrain from doing so but we are ignored. We had no trouble with wildlife until they moved in. The squirrels now make a mess of our deck and yard. The deer eat all our plants. Our gardens were started long before they moved in. We are trying to add beauty to our home and the village. We are respectful of our neighbors but we do not receive the same respect.
On July 3rd at a local store in Livonia I had an angel come to my aid when I had a small problem with a sandwich tray opening up on me. (Oh and by the way it was a good sandwich tra, a lot of food for a reasonable price); anyway this lady helped me not only get the tray fixed but carried it to my car. I didn't get your name but your act of kindness made my day. I thank God for his special angels he sends us. God bless you.
In my area there are several people flying the Confederate flag. Researching the Secessionist papers of the states that seceded from the Union all include a statement that one of the reasons for secession was the potential denial of slave ownership in the United States as well as the justification of their position on the matter. The states would no longer have the right to own other human beings. This is the heritage that those who identify with the Confederacy are so proud of. Despite what one wants to believe the Secessionist papers speak for themselves. Find them online and read them in their entirety. The Confederate flag represents the states that fought for the right to own slaves. That is the bottom line and that is what you are supporting. Not a heritage but a horror. Around the anniversary of my husband's passing, I placed a lovely lavender, purple and white hanging basket at his gravesite. Several days later somebody stole
that hanging basket! How cruel can someone be? May that thief live with their conscience. I am disheartened and ashamed of the representation of our town Little League by the coaches and the core values, or lack thereof, they showed in the way they chose players for the All-Star team. I'm not saying this because my child wasn't picked, if you're good you're good, if you're not you're not, but that wasn't the case here. Kids who play well but have appalling sportsmanship (ie. screaming at the coaches, slamming their equipment, not shaking other player’s hands) were chosen over kids who play well AND have great attitudes, kids who are true AllStars. FYI, they're not fooling anyone, everyone knows the system is rigged through jealous fathers living vicariously through their sons, serving themselves, not the players. Looking forward to the years when they're in the stands!

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had a hip replacement. I am 84, with hearing loss. My family says my hearing is worse after the operation. My daughter talked with several seniors who experienced the same thing. They think it has to do with the anesthesia. Fact or fiction? -- D.W. ANSWER: Possibly fact. Hearing loss is a known and rare occurrence after surgery, and there are several ways in which it can happen. You mentioned anesthesia: Several anesthetic agents, especially nitrous oxide, can cause temporary hearing loss, but nitrous oxide is not used as often during surgery as it once was. Changes in the fluid pressure in the ear also can cause both temporary and permanent hearing loss. Finally, antibiotics given around the time of an operation can cause hearing loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently attended a free introductory visit at my local health spa. It’s an interesting process. There is a circuit with 12 machines and 12 mats for doing cardio. Each exercise is done for 30 seconds, then you move to the next station. The circuit is supposed to be done twice at each session, three times per week. Can this really work to help you lose weight and get fit? Need I say again, 30 seconds ... really? Your opinion please. -- E.Y.M. ANSWER: There are two questions, and the first is on fitness. There, the answer is a resounding yes. High-intensity interval training has been clearly proven to improve muscle and cardiovascular fitness. If you were to follow the program at the gym, working hard but not overdoing it, you certainly would find that your ability to do the exercises would improve, your stamina would increase, and you’d likely feel better and have more energy. A 24-minute workout (24 stations of 30 seconds each, done twice) is enough (and a LOT better than no workout at all). Unfortunately, just doing the exercise will not make you lose much weight. Losing weight comes from better dietary habits, which can help you eat less food and still feel satisfied. The combination of increased exercise and a little less food, especially less low-quality (“junk”) food, may help you lose a few pounds. Losing weight shouldn’t be the goal, in my opinion. Losing weight and keeping it off is tough to do, but by exercising regularly and eating well, you can dramatically improve overall health and well-being even without weight loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an itchy-ear problem. It even wakes me up at night. I’ve tried Cortizone-10, hydrogen peroxide solution, ear baths and cotton swabs. Nothing seems to work for long. Can you help me? -- G.P. ANSWER: Stop the hydrogen peroxide -- it is very drying and can damage the sensitive skin in the ear. The hydrocortisone should work for many common conditions, but if it hasn’t, then your regular doctor, a dermatologist or ENT doctor should take a look in your ear and see what is going on. Seborrheic dermatitis and eczema are common conditions that can affect the skin in the ear. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SEEING IS BELIEVING WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD SAFETY (NAPSI)—Although properly functioning vehicle lights, wipers and mirrors allow for better visibility while driving, these items are all too often forgotten or ignored when people perform basic auto care, says the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making sure that you can see and be seen on the road is essential to avoiding motor vehicle accidents, yet many motorists overlook simple maintenance steps that can improve driving visibility,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Following a few auto care visibility tips can be illuminating, helping to ensure the safety of you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. • Replace any exterior or interior lights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or nonfunctioning and be sure headlights are correctly aimed. • Make sure that vehicle mirrors are clean and properly positioned. • Check windshield washer fluid level and, when it gets low, replace it. • Replace wiper blades if they show cracking or if they chatter or streak when operating. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade. • When in doubt, turn your lights on to help you see and help other drivers see you. Some places even have laws that require headlights to be on when windshield wipers are operating. • Don’t overdrive your headlights. Maintain a speed that will let you stop within the illuminated area; otherwise, you create a blind crash zone in front of your vehicle. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. When is clumsiness a cause for concern? Who hasn’t tripped over his own feet or knocked over a water glass on a table? No one is immune to the occasional clumsiness, but some people may grow concerned that their bouts of clumsiness are becoming more frequent. For healthy people, bumping into a wall when misjudging a corner or dropping silverware on the floor is often a minor, isolated incident. Lack of concentration or multitasking often may be to blame. In 2007, Professor Charles Swanik and a research team at the University of Delaware studied athletes to discover why some seem to be more injury prone than others. Researchers found that clumsy athletes’ brains seemed to have “slowed processing speed,” which referred to how their brains understand new information and respond to it. But clumsiness also can be a sign of a bigger issue at play, namely motor problems within the brain. According to Taylor Harrison, MD, clinical instructor in the neuromuscular division of Emory University, coordination of the body is complicated and tied to both motor and sensory systems. That means the eyes, brain, nerves,
cerebellum, which specializes in coordination and balance, muscles, and bones must work together. Clumsiness can result from stroke, seizure disorders, brain trauma or the presence of tumors, and other conditions. Healthline also says that clumsiness may be an early symptom of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s affects the central nervous system and can impair motor skills. Alzheimer’s slowly damages and kills brain cells and may cause issues with coordination. This may be the case with other dementias as well. Clumsiness may sometimes result from a lack of sleep or overconsumption of alcohol. Arthritis also can lead to clumsiness when joint pain and restrictive movements make it challenging to get around. Psychologists may suggest cognitive behavioral therapy or propose performing tasks with more mindfulness to reduce clumsiness. If that doesn’t work, men and women should visit their physicians, who can conduct tests to rule out certain things and provide peace of mind.

Take Steps to Reduce Conflicts Between Bears and People The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Black bears have been keeping DEC Wildlife staff busy, with numerous human-bear conflicts already this summer. Bears are often attracted to bird feeders, improperly stored garbage, messy grills, and pet food that is left outdoors. When people allow bears to have access to human-related foods, it encourages bear behavior that put people, property and bears at risk. Reducing human-bear conflicts requires changing human behavior. When we reduce attractants for bears, we protect people and property, and we do what’s best for bears too. To Reduce Human-Bear Conflicts: • Take down bird feeders after April 1st. • Store garbage in a bear-resistant garbage can or keep inside until the morning of pick up. • Clean up grease from grills after use. • Feed pets indoors. • Owners of backyard chicken flocks in bear country should also take steps to secure their flock and feed. If You Encounter a Bear: Never Approach, Surround, or Corner a Bear - bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective. Never Run From a Bear - stay calm, speak in a loud and calm voice,␣slowly back away␣and leave the area. Use Noise to Scare Away Bears From Your Campsite yell, clap, or bang pots immediately upon sighting a bear near your campsite. Do Not Throw Your Backpack or Food Bag at an Approaching Bear. • Doing so will only encourage bears to approach and “bully” people to get food. • By teaching a bear to approach humans for food, you are endangering yourself, other campers/ residents, and the bears. In Your Yard: • From a safe distance, make loud noises by shouting or banging pots to scare the bear away. • Once the bear leaves, remove all attractants such as bird seed, garbage, and pet food.
• Ask neighbors to remove attractants. In a Building: • Give the bear a clear escape route. • Leave any doors open as you back away from the bear. • Do not lock the bear in a room. If a Bear Becomes Aggressive and Approaches You: • Raise your arms and speak in a loud, calm voice while backing away. Charges You: • Stand your ground. • If you have bear spray, dispense directly at the bear. Please follow the link leaving the DEC’s website to learn about the proper use of bear spray. Follows You: • Stay together. • Do not run, but continue to back away while speaking loudly. If the Bear Continues to Follow You: • Stand your ground. • Intimidate by making yourself look bigger by waving arms, clapping, shouting, banging sticks. • Prepare to fight or use bear spray. UNDERSTAND HARDINESS ZONES BEFORE PLANTING Gardening benefits the environment in myriad ways. Maintaining natural landscapes and preserving green spaces can reduce the collective carbon footprint of the human race. Trees, flowers and other greenery filter the air and create welcoming habitats for all species of animals and insects. Many home gardeners set out each spring to create landscapes that cater to all of the senses. But choosing plants that are unlikely to thrive in certain climates can lead to dissatisfaction and premature plant demise and may require gardeners to use more fertilizers, pesticides and other not-so-Earth-friendly techniques to help plants thrive. One of the more important steps gardeners can take before spring arrives is to educate themselves about plant hardiness zones. Hardiness zones are defined by the average climatic conditions of the region and are broken down into various zones. The USDA Hardiness Zone map divides North America into 13 separate zones. Each zone is marked by 10 F incremental differences from the last zone. In some versions of the map, each zone is further divided into “a” and “b” regions. The National Gardening Association says the USDA Hardiness Zone Map was revised in 2012. The latest version was jointly developed by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Group. To help develop the new map, the USDA and Oregon State University requested that horticultural and climatic experts review the zones in their geographic areas. As a result, the zone boundaries in the 2012 edition of the map have shifted in many areas. Canada’s Hardiness Zone map, updated in 2010, uses nine different zones. Zone maps are tools that show where permanent landscape plants can adapt. Home gardeners who are looking for shrubs or perennials to last year after year should recognize that such plants must tolerate year-round conditions, including the lowest and highest temperatures and the amount of precipitation. Snow cover and humidity also can impact a plant’s propensity to thrive. While zone maps are not perfect, they can be useful in planning and ensuring the survival of future gardens. Plant and seed manufacturer Burpee says that other factors to consider that also affect the viability of plants include wind, moisture and soil conditions. The company offers an interactive zone finder on their website that will indicate the hardiness zone as well as average first and last frost dates. Paul D. Humphrey Sr. July 5, 2018 Honeoye: Peacefully on July 5, 2018 at age 90 years. Predeceased by his wife Rev. Barbara Humphrey and grandson Austin Paul White. Survived by children; Margaret (Paul) Watkins of WI, Douglas (Tracy) Humphrey of Fairport, and Catherine (Dan) White-Barber of Honeoye. 8 grandchildren; Ray, Jen, Carrie, Michael, Matthew, Ashley, Zeke, Chloe, 8 great grandchildren; Jake, Michael, Ayden, Sean, Katie, McKenna, Darby, and Kalila. Paul was a dedicated member of the Honeoye Community where he served in the Rotary Club, Richmond Fire Department, and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a proud US Marine that served honorably during the Korean Conflict. Paul was born May 5, 1928 in Richford, Vermont to parents Edgar and Minnie (Gallup) Humphrey. The family moved to the “homestead” on Phillips Road in Webster, NY when he was a very small child. He had seven brothers and one sister. Prior to graduating from high school, Paul enlisted in the New York Guard, Company G, 21st Regiment, serving from November 1944 to October 1946. He transferred directly from there to the U.S. Marine Corps in 1946, and attended Alfred University, Alfred, NY from 1949 to 1950 where he earned high school credits and studied refrigeration and air conditioning. During college, he married Barbara Myers on February 22, 1950, and they spent 65 wonderful years together. He served his country as a supply sergeant during the Korean Conflict, shipping out in 1951 and receiving an honorable discharge the following year. Following his service, he started a small business in fire and flood restoration, which he named, Humphrey Service Company. Humphrey’s grew to become a well-known and respected establishment, located at 700 Goodman Avenue in Rochester, NY. He and Barbara moved to the lake cottage in 1985 that he had built for Barbara’s parents, Ford and Lois Myers (both deceased 1975), at 188 West Lake Road, Honeoye, NY. After retirement, he started several other side businesses to keep himself occupied. He had a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying the club’s WWII Waco bi-plane to fly-in breakfasts, acting in several amateur musicals, traveling, and was an avid supporter of his wife’s ministry. He was a longstanding member of the Masons and Cooper Marine. He served on the Richmond Planning Board, the Chamber of Commerce, the Richmond Fire Department as a first responder and traffic manager, and at St. John’s Episcopal Church-Gleaners Kitchen in Canandaigua. He and his wife were loyal supporters of the activities of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending as many of their school and sporting events as they were able. His perpetual whistling and dry sense of humor will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed. Friends called Tuesday, July 10th, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 8624 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye, NY where military honors concluded the calling hours at 7pm. Paul’s Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, July 11th, 11am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 183 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY, 14424.
