607-329-2578 • www.mjcontractingwesternny.com TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Top up or replace old insulation in your attic. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss. Also, over time, some types of insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Experts recommend installing a dimensionally stable batt insulation. Aim for an r-value of at least R-50, or a depth of roughly 16 inches.

Have you paid attention to the amazingly beautiful flowers down Main St. in Canandaigua? The garden carts in Bloomfield? Thank you to the workers/volunteers who have kept all the flowers watered and cared for this summer. You are appreciated! As a Chaplain volunteer in the Continuing Care at Thompson Hospital, I am truly blessed to visit the elderly in the Dementia/Alzheimer’s wing. It is SO important that the elderly people have visitations. Even if their minds are gone or going they still like and need to see family or friends, children, pets, a

This is to the woman who I was behind on [local road] in [local town] on Saturday. You had your left directional on and turned left and I stopped and proceeded. Next thing I know you made an unbelievable Uturn and you were facing the oncoming traffic and almost hit

bouquet of flowers, Etc. Most residents have had to give up their independence, their car, their home, and perhaps even their spouse. Please take the time, take your children or grandchildren to visit the elderly and show them love and that someone cares. Talk to them about their professions, and their lives. There is a great “wealth” about the elderly and the lives they have lived. It will not only bless your day, it will bless their days. We would like to thank Seth Graham of Seth Graham Design at 3105 Main St., Caledonia, for creating such a beautiful Memorial video of

me which made me slam my brakes and lean on the horn. You looked at me as if you did nothing wrong!! You may have a death wish but I sure as heck don't!!!! This intersection is bad enough without inconsiderate idiots like you making it worse!!!! Next time, continue your left turn and proceed to the street on the right, approx. two car lengths away and turn around in someone's driveway or in the driveway on the left which is the same distance. Remember, you are not the only person on the road AND LOOK before you turn!!! I returned home from work only to find my neighbor behind me on this dead end street had company. How did I

our mother/wife/MeMe Donna Brew. Seth's compassion and ideas were truly heartfelt and appreciated. He's absolutely a talented young man. Thanks again, Seth, for keeping our memories alive through this beautiful video!

Thank you Kelly for volunteering your time to put up the new letters on the Opera Block building. Your dedication to making the Avon community look beautiful is greatly appreciated by everyone living in or visiting our Town.

know? The cars parked partially on my lawn were a dead giveaway. I pulled up and asked the lady with the baby, can you not park on my lawn? Well now my neighbor claims they have to move, because they have neighbor problems. Problems like, the dog barking, putting your overflowing tote to the road on Friday for Tuesday pick up so it leaves a mess all over? Problems like not mowing by your tree out front that still has Christmas lights on it? Problems like the cat spraying the garage and taking a dump in the flower bed? Yes that is a neighbor problem. Do you need boxes for your move or a good Realtor? Let me know! I would love to help you out so I don't have a neighbor problem.

Thank you Crosby’s Gas & Mini Market -Caledonia! And thank you to the person who found my billfold insert and the employee who returned the insert to me by mail. It was appreciated very much!!!!

How can you be so shameful? For the past 3 weeks in our quiet town you have stolen things off of porches, have tried breaking into homes of elders and broke windows. In our yard, your picture is being taken and we have security alarms. What is wrong with people like you? We have reported this to all the authorities! You know who you are, so stop and get a job instead of depending on us! If you get caught, you may not like the outcome and you may get a new home!

Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

WOMEN IN STEM Despite the widely held notion that men exceed the number of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields, data indicates that there isn’t actually much disparity among the sexes. According to the National Science Foundation, women equal men in terms of bachelor’s degrees awarded in most of the fields of STEM, including biosciences, social sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences. The only STEM fields in which men still outnumber women are computer science and engineering. Women are just as capable as men to meet the demands of STEM careers. Raw IQ tests from the British Psychological Society have indicated that women and men frequently score equally well, with some studies suggesting women have the edge. In terms of mathematics prowess, girls score a mere 3 percent lower than their male counterparts on the math portion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, according to the College Board.

Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a longstanding trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.

• Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty-nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.

As people are increasingly seeking to bring a more personal touch to end-of-life services, they are looking for unique ways to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed. With this in mind, they are encouraged not only to compare the costs and goods offered by our funeral home, but also to inquire about how they can best represent the deceased. According to the National Funeral Directors Association 2017 Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study, nearly half of respondents report having attended a funeral at a non-traditional location, such as an outdoor setting or place that had some meaning in the life of the deceased. Making such arrangements can contribute significantly to the remembrance of a unique life. When it comes to personalizing a funeral or memorial service, your options are nearly unlimited. When you attend a funeral today, you are likely to see a photo display, a memorial wall, pieces of the deceased’s collections, or some other tangible collection of personal artifacts. To learn more about our funeral and memorial services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Bodybuilder Son Takes Steroids --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? -- Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack. Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. -- F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the most-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be distracted by promises of good times, yet you ultimately reach the goals you set for yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

Grime’s Glen Park Enchants Visitors with Creek Bed Hiking and Three Waterfalls Grimes Glen Park sits along a quiet corner of the lovely Village of Naples. The entrance road, branching off of Vine Street, is fairly inconspicuous, marked by a small sign at the end of Vine Street and a wooden sign at its parking area entrance. The parking area for Grime’s Glen is somewhat limited and fills up quickly. A men’s and a women’s restroom are open and available alongside this parking area. The Grimes Glen trail begins here, with picnic tables on either side and an informational shelter greeting visitors and describing the park and the area it encompasses. The picnic area leads to a muraled, cement bridge across rippling Grimes Creek. The bridge is decorated with images of fish in the water. Upstream from the bridge, the creek slows and pools, creating a shallow swimming spot within view of the picnic area. Trails lead upstream on either side of the creek bed; however, further upstream, the trails become much more challenging, switch from bank to bank and even wash out in places. Walking in the creek bed is often the best, and sometimes the only, option especially as you advance towards the first waterfall. As the creek is shallow, this does not present much of an issue; however, visitors must be vigilant to avoid the slippery, flat rocks that lie here and there beneath the water. The creek runs through the bottom of a gorge, and beautiful, high gorge walls rise from its banks on either side. The woods and foliage through which the creek flows are dense and glade-like. Along the way to the first waterfall, a picnic table stands along the trail, offering hikers a respite to enjoy looking across the creek. Birds, chipmunks and other wildlife can be viewed along the trail, and fish can, occasionally, be seen in the creek, as well, particularly further downstream. Roughly a half mile upstream, the first waterfall appears, created by a tributary entering the left bank of the stream. The waterfall plummets approximately sixty feet along the rocky gorge wall into Grimes Creek below, creating a white cascade along the craggy rock face. There are two waterfalls further upstream,

with the second one pooling at its base and creating a swimming space along the falls. Grimes Glen, apart from containing a delightful trio of waterfalls, also sourced New York’s oldest fossil tree. According to a New York State informational sign, Grimes Glen is the “home of the oldest fossil tree, found and mounted by D. Dana Luther, Naples, N. Y., now in the State Education Building, Albany, N. Y.” Today, Grimes Glen provides the uncommon opportunity to interact with a park’s natural features. From its creek bed to its waterfalls to its gorge trails, the space allows avid and casual hikers alike the opportunity to engage with nature at each visitor’s own level. A young person could walk up the creek bed, undeterred by its shallow, flowing waters, while an experienced hiker could scale the steep gorge wall trails for a more challenging experience. It is, therefore, little wonder that Grimes Glen Park is a local favorite.
