TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Why Do We Have Hair? --DEAR DR. ROACH: There is a question that has intrigued me for years: What is the purpose of underarm and pubic hair? I guess, for that matter, what is the purpose of any body hair and hair on your head? -- B.H. ANSWER: Hair provides protection from the sun and helps regulate body temperature. Many evolutionary biologists believe our distant ancestors began losing most body hair when we began walking upright. Axillary (underarm) and pubic hair are thought to be conserved because they reduce friction, wick moisture away from the skin, provide a small degree of protection and as part of sexual selection, possibly due to pheromones, hormones that act outside the body to attract others.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused. While it may be true that the majority of men having prostate cancer may never be bothered by it, what about the minority whose lives will be threatened by it? If they aren’t screened and treated, many will die. -- G.F. ANSWER: I had a professor in medical school, Dr. Larry Wood, who used to say, “If I have confused you, you’re probably paying attention.” You have identified a major issue with prostate cancer screening (and screening in general): If screening harms some but saves the lives of a few, is it worth doing? That answer may be different if you are coming from a public policy perspective versus an individual perspective. Although we don’t know the exact numbers, it is estimated that about 47 men need to be treated for prostate cancer in order to save one life. Put another way, 46 out of 47 men are treated for prostate cancer, with its attendant risk of side effects, such as loss of sexual function and incontinence, without reducing their likelihood of dying of prostate cancer. We can’t predict with certainty whose prostate cancer is destined to kill them and whose is destined to be more indolent and slow-growing. The Gleason score, a measure of pathologic appearance of the cancer, helps, but is not completely accurate. Ninety percent of men with screening-detected prostate cancer elect to get it treated. Based on the many letters I get, all of them feel like they were the lucky ones to have had their lethal cancer removed -- even if, statistically, most of them were not destined to die from prostate cancer. Because it is likely that the harms of screening outweigh the benefits, the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force has recommended against prostate cancer screening in general. However, there are certainly cases in which I feel prostate cancer screening (remember that “screening” means that there are no symptoms or signs of cancer) is appropriate, which is why it’s important to have an individualized discussion of the risks and benefits of screening. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement and cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Dr., Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries charm helps persuade others to listen to your proposal. But it’s still a long way from acceptance, unless you can stand up to the tough questions that are set to follow. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Plan to share a weekend getaway from all the pressures of your hectic workaday world with a very special someone. You could be pleasantly surprised at what develops. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your keen insight once again helps you handle a challenging situation with a clearer perception of what it’s really all about. What you learn helps you make a difficult decision. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) If you want to steer clear of getting involved in a new family dispute, say so. Your stand might cause hurt feelings for some, but overall, you’ll be respected for your honesty. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Expect recognition for your efforts in getting a project into operation. Besides the more practical rewards, your Lion’s heart will be warmed by the admiration of your colleagues. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Set aside time to rid yourself of clutter that might well be drawing down your creative energies. Consider asking someone to help you decide what stays and what goes. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A colleague could make a request that might place you in an awkward position with co-workers. Best advice: Share your concerns with an associate you can trust. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your energy levels are way up, allowing you to take on the added challenge of a task you’ve been hoping to secure. Expect this move to lead to an important opportunity. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your continuing sense of confidence in what you’ve set out to do gives encouragement to others. Expect to see more people asking to add their efforts to yours. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might think it would be best to reject a suggestion that others insist would be unworkable. But you might be surprised by what you find if you give it a chance. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Changing a decision might disappoint some people, but the important thing is that you be honest with yourself. Don’t go ahead with anything you have doubts about. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There could be some fallout from an emotional confrontation that you really should deal with before moving on. Best to start fresh with a clean, clear slate. BORN THIS WEEK: Your honesty not only helps you make decisions for yourself, but also helps others find the right choices for themselves. Whiskey Riot Fest Includes Local Crafters By Amanda Dudek
Winemakers Many Varieties
Grape Juice
Perhaps counterintuitively given its name, the Whiskey Riot Festival, held in Rochester’s Riverside Convention Center, was not a scene of unruly behavior. Rather, Whiskey Riot Festival goers were in high spirits -pun intended- and were polite and upbeat as they made their way around the room, tasting the various whiskeys and a few other brews. Brewers were situated behind booths circling a large, elegant ballroom. Two inner circles of booths and an upper section offering food and snacks as well as a room for two seminars completed the space. The ladies and gentlemen representing their breweries were knowledgeable, friendly and professional. With brewers pouring over 90 different whiskeys, it was nearly impossible to sample every liquor during the event’s 3-hour window. Also serving guests were three popup bars: Tommycider Splash Cocktail Bar by Tommyrotter Distillery, The Lost Monster Cocktail Bar by Highland Park, and the Lawrenceburg Cooler Cocktail Bar by Four Roses. These pop-up bars provided a fun, outon-the-town atmosphere to the event. With what we were able to taste, crafted by brewers hailing from across the United States as well as from other countries, we were pleased to find that Finger Lakes Region crafters stood up very well against their competition. Out of several whiskeys tasted, a handful of distilleries stood out, with our own local craftsmen among the best of these. Our favorites among sampled liquors came from the following 6 distilleries: West Cork, Tommyrotter Distillery, Hochstadters, Finger Lakes Distilling, 1000 Stories and Black Button Distilling. Of these 6 distilleries, half of them are local businesses: Tommyrotter Distillery, Finger Lakes Distilling and Black Button Distilling. Tommyrotter Distillery, located in Buffalo, presented among its offerings a triple barrel, American whiskey made of wheat, rye and corn, which was strong, smooth, slightly sweet with a pleasant finish. They also offered up a Tommycider Splash Cocktail which was delicious over ice, preserving the cider taste while including notes of cinnamon. Finger

Lakes Distilling, which can be found in Burdett not far from Watkins Glen, was serving, alongside other options, its McKenzie Whiskey, a bourbon whiskey in which the bourbon was not overpowering and which ended with a clean finish, as well as a whiskey aged in a sherry cask, well-flavored and mellow with a fade finish. Our final tasting, and the perfect end to a wonderful evening, was at Black Button Distilling which, besides its locations in Buffalo and Rochester, has several additional connections to the Finger Lakes Region. Edgewood Farms, located right in Groveland, provides all their corn, barley, wheat and rye. Dairy cream is sourced from New York farms, and the apple cider they use is from LynOaken Farms in Medina. This past spring, Black Button Distilling created a farm of their own, Black Button Farm & Forestry in South Bristol. The business plans to grow juniper for gin, white oak to make its own bourbon barrels and fresh herbs and spices as well as organic honey for its cocktails. Black Button Distilling utilizes and supports New York State products and agriculture not just in words but in deeds. At this inaugural Whiskey Riot Festival, Black Button Distilling made taste buds dance with their Bespoke Bourbon Cream which contains notes of vanilla and caramel. At the end of this festival, local craftsmen could certainly hold their heads up high beside their peers. Local flavors were among the very best to our tastes, adding yet another exceptional aspect to our already extraordinary region.

How common is carpal tunnel? Increased hours spent on computer keyboards and digital devices can put people at risk for a relatively common and oftentimes painful condition that affects mobility in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, can cause numbness, pain and tingling in the hand or arm as a result of one of the major nerves of the hand — the median nerve — being compressed in the wrist. The American College of Rheumatology says that CTS may be the most common nerve disorder experienced today, affecting between four and 10 million people in the United States alone. Middle-aged to older individuals are more likely to develop CTS than younger persons, and females are diagnosed three times more frequently than males. What is the carpal tunnel? The carpal tunnel is a passage that forms in the wrist on the palm side of the hand. It is located just beneath the skin surface. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says the carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones. Eight small wrist bones form three sides of the tunnel. The width of the tunnel is only about an inch. Injury or inflammation to the tissues inside of the carpal tunnel can shrink the space of the tunnel, eventually pressing on the tendons and the median nerve that runs through this narrow area. The role of the median nerve: When compression occurs in this area of the wrist, a key nerve is affected. The median nerve originates in the neck and runs through the arm. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist and goes into the hand, providing feeling to the palm side of the thumb and to the index, middle and part of the ring fingers (although not the little finger). It also controls some small muscles at the base of the thumb.
LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel: Weakness of the hand as well as tingling and numbness are the two most common symptoms of CTS. The numbness particularly affects four of the fingers. It can occur when holding a phone, book, newspaper or steering wheel or engaging in just about any activity that involves the hands. CTS also may wake a person up from sleep. There are a number of other compression issues that can occur in the hand and arms, causing similar pain and tingling in other areas. Ulnar nerve compression in the elbow can cause part of the ring finger and pinky finger to tingle and may be indicative of a different ailment. That’s why a professional diagnosis must be sought when experiencing symptoms related to CTS. When to see a doctor: If pain and tingling are affecting activities and sleeping patterns, individuals should see their doctors. Various nonsurgical remedies and therapies may help. If left untreated, any condition that affects nerve function may lead to permanent nerve and muscle damage.

THERE IS NO PLACE FOR GUILT In psychological terms, “guilt” is an unhappy feeling that individuals may have when they feel that they have not done the right thing. This kind of emotion is particularly harmful when it is misplaced. With this in mind, one primary benefit of preplanning a funeral for one’s self is that it spares others from making important and expensive decisions based on the notion that “it’s what he or she would have wanted,” especially if it means that a guilt-ridden survivor of the deceased must go into debt and endure financial hardship. Instead of leaving it to others to guess what you would have wanted, it is far better to get what you know you really want by preplanning your own funeral. Thousands of people choose to plan their funeral and burial expenses and, in doing so, they receive great emotional relief for themselves and their loved ones. Prepaying your funeral will allow you to make your own funeral plans, but, more importantly, will spare surviving relatives and loved ones from the emotional burden of having to make decisions at a time of great stress and grief. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY, facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

I am a rescued white Shepherd from a home right here in Rochester, NY. If it wasn’t for my father, Bob, I would not have been able to pose for this picture. My mom, Diana, says that this pose reminds her of the “most interesting man in the world.” You know, the Dos X guy, “stay thirsty my friends!” I will be 3 at the end of May & think I know everything, but, guess what, I don’t! Still learning, my friends! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Thank you to Danielle, Grace and Activity staff at Morgan Estates for celebrating National Assisted Living Week with style. They organized many activities, music performances and outings to celebrate the residents! What a wonderful way to honor the residents and all they contribute to their living situation. Lots of laughs and smiles. Morgan Estates is very fortunate to have such a great, caring staff. I recently purchased my first vehicle from Randall Farnsworth Chevrolet and I can say it was the most relaxed, hassle free car dealership experience I've ever had. The professionals
at Randall Farnsworth Auto Group deliver quality, respectful, and knowledgeable service to ensure the customer is getting into a vehicle they want. Special thanks Charlie Webb Thanking our Rescuers who were at Boughton Park just when they were needed. DEC Officer Ken Levanway helped revive my older Lab "Toby" when his larynx restricted and breathing stopped. Also many thanks for the assistance of our new Park Ranger Matthew McDonald and Ann, the nurse who was also walking her dog and stopped to give comfort.
could give your little one is teaching her to forgive and to love. Venting is not going to get your stuff back. Did you lock your car door I hope when you were doing your activity? Did you leave it in plain sight for temptation to get the better of someone? Always remember, out of sight is out of mind. Theft can happen anywhere. Just use common sense.
I am sorry your little girl’s things were stolen at a church parking lot but the greatest thing you could teach your little girl is forgiveness and mercy. No, stealing is not right, never was or is, but to call someone rotten, etc. I think if you are a church goer because you were in a church parking lot, I would hope you listen to what is taught by your pastor. The best example you
To the tattoo shop in [local town], shame on you for putting a tattoo on a minor. Did you know it is illegal to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 even with parental consent? Did you know you could have your license suspended for tattooing a minor? Shame on the minor's parents for taking the child to get the tattoo. You are teaching your child that the law doesn't have to be followed. I have reported your shop to the local authorities and
Special mention to the staff at Mendon Village Animal Hospital for being ready, willing and able to assist the moment we arrived. I was on route to the hospital to visit my niece & new great niece, & stopped at Dunkin Donuts to bring her something. As I pulled in the busy place, about 5 cars ahead of me, I see 2 cars pull in, too. I thought, oh we must take turns going thru, no big deal. One car snuck in and the other, a Jeep, sat there awaiting his turn. The 5 ahead of me must have been in a big hurry, for none let him in. My turn came, so I waved him in to go. I placed my order, drove up to the window and the very friendly
they will be looking into this. On 8/15 I went to [local store] in [local town] to get the double pack of steaks on sale. I in the past have gotten them and understand they are very popular and go quickly! The store opens at 9 am and as I walk into the store at 9:01 am to get my steaks... a man with his cart took ALL of them right in front of me and saw me; he knew what I was there for. I was furious as he took all of them away. However, the cashier was nice enough to get me some that they had in the back. I just want to say that I was furious as to how greedy some of you shoppers are! I know you like them, for the same reason I was there, but I would have left plenty for other customers that wanted them. By the way, I got 2 of the packages! An Un-Greedy Steak Shopper
clerk said, it’s all paid for. I was like, excuse me, no I didn't pay yet. She explained that the gentleman in the car ahead paid for my order. I just about burst into tears. I am so thankful for him and for what he did. I used the extra $ saved for the parking fee. THANK YOU!
I was late for an appt, wrong address and got behind you in a 2 lane road traveling under the speed limit. I couldn't get around you and you decided to slow down to punish me and gave me the finger. You could have moved over for me or at least gone the speed limit. Thanks for being so courteous - not. Why travel in the left lane if you don't need to (you eventually turned right)? Dear Suzie Sunflower: You pulled in our driveway when we weren't home last week, parked your car, and cut some of our sunflowers for yourself. Taking them without permission is THEFT. Our neighbor did see you! Please don't do it again. Realize too that if you had knocked on the door when we were home, we would have cut you a bouquet. We do this all the time. Thanks for your consideration in the future.
