--DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know if you have ever heard of a person being allergic to psyllium fiber? My doctor suggested I take Metamucil for constipation, as opposed to stool softeners. However, when I took it, my face and eyes began to itch, I began to wheeze and I coughed until I vomited it up. My doctor stated he had never heard of anyone being allergic to it. As a side note, my husband has used Metamucil for years, and I have had a couple of episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath that could be attributed to inhaling some of the powder when he mixed it. -P.G. ANSWER: I haven’t seen any cases either, but it can happen, rarely -- most often to people who have allergies to grasses or dust. It is possible that inhaling some of the powder started the allergy. I would be careful to stay away from the area where your husband is mixing his, as allergies sometimes worsen over time. Unfortunately, you will have to find another source for fiber. Good dietary sources include wheat bran, prunes and prune juice. If you need a supplement, you may try methylcellulose (such as Citrucel), wheat dextrin (like Benefiber), and calcium polycarbophil (Fibercon). Be sure to get enough fluid, and start with a low dose and then slowly increase. The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 86 years old and in generally good health. He has been falling for no apparent reason for the past three years. He has had MRIs and X-rays, been to neurologists and ENTs -no one has an explanation. He has walkers and an electric wheelchair, but there are times when he has to stand and/or walk a little. My parents’ apartment looks like a war zone. Almost all of the furniture has been broken, not to mention the cuts and bruises on my dad. Is there anything you can think of that might cause this? -- J.G. ANSWER: If multiple doctors haven’t helped with the benefit of a complete history, exam and labs, I’m not likely to. However, vitamin D supplements have been shown to improve strength and reduce falls in the large number of people who have low levels. There are two ways to find out. You either can have the vitamin D level checked by a doctor, and use vitamin D if it is low; or, you can try a daily dose of vitamin D for a month or so and see if it helps. Most authorities recommend 400-800 IU daily. Personally, I have found that 1,000-2,000 IU often is needed. This dose is unlikely to do harm if taken for only a month trial, and may be necessary for those whose levels are deficient and have symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Side effects of snoring include higher risk for Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and

slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called betaamyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

What a fantastic music department at Penfield High! The wind ensemble, choral and choir, strings and symphony are outstanding; overwhelmed and thrilled with the beauty and skill of the musicians. Thank you and congratulations to 14 to 18 year olds who are the 'good guys'! You looked super in lovely gowns and tuxes! Only wish more of the audience could compliment you by dressing up a bit, too. The hours and hours put into the music presentations by hundreds of teens who choose music ...for us in the community are much appreciated. who deliver our Penny Saver! Monday I had to put air in my tires. I always go to BJ's in Webster. Well I was on my last tire and I was taking off the cap on the tire and I hear a snap and all the air comes rushing out of my tire. I just stood there and didn't know why or what to do. Thank God for the kind gentleman in the cashier’s booth at the gas station at BJ's who came running over to tell me I broke the sensor off and he would get me help from the auto dept. in BJ's. Within 5 minutes another kind gentlemen came over with tools to change my tire and put the spare one on. I asked him what I owed and he said "Merry Christmas." I didn't get the names of either men but I just wanted to say thank you so very much to both of you for your

On 9/13/17 I had picked my child up from an area high school and quickly turned around in the driveway across from the school to pick up another student who also needed a ride. I completely turned my car around so that I wouldn't have to back out of the driveway with so much school traffic and children walking. After picking up this second student I was flagged down by a car so I put my window down. The homeowner got into his car and chased me so that he could scream, point his finger and belligerently remind me that I am never to use his driveway again. Because you chased me down and scared me, I did report your

forwarded my concerns to the county. I'm sorry it resorted to this, but I am tired of asking you to pick up an occasional box that you shouldn't have left behind and having to call you. It’s frustrating.

How hard is it for this garbage company to pick up a box and throw it away? I've constantly had to call them and they keep on sending someone to pick it up. I have better things to do than to constantly call up this company to pick up something they should've done in the first place. It’s getting old. One lousy box and it’s Tuesday and I called Saturday. We pay for this service in our taxes. Please don't make this difficult for me. I don't want to have to call you up almost on a regular basis. I've contacted the town; they've

I recently phoned [local provider] about a $1.99 extra charge on my bill. I was told it would cost me $5.00 to talk with a live person! I should go online to find out. What do you do if you don't have a computer or are 85 and have a problem using the internet? I find that outrageous!! [Local Town] is being turned into one big junkyard. A once nice restaurant has a view south of a junkyard. The old diner and adjacent properties have turned a once nice area into a slum. Can't something be done?

5th Grade Runner Earns All-American Status at Nationals By Karin Fetzner St. Agnes School 5th grade student Catherine Staley competed in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships 3K race on December 9th in Tallahassee, Florida placing 12th out of a field of 323 runners in the age 9-10 bracket which puts her in the top 4% of runners in the country in her age group. Catherine improved her ranking in the nation this year by 12 places improving on her 24th place finish last year. The race was conducted under cold and damp conditions with temps only in the 40s and the rainfall from the previous day left the field soggy and muddy but Catherine put in a time of 11:25 earning the status of an All-American Runner. “My goal going into the race was to be in the top 25,” reflected Staley after the race. “I was so happy when I was done and made it. I didn’t know I could go that fast!” Earlier this season, Catherine won the women’s division of the Geneseo Trio. Her overall trio time of 1:00:01 was recognized as a new Women’s Trio record. Catherine was the top female finisher in the Oak Tree 5k with a time of 20 minutes - good for 10th overall. In the Friday Knight 5k, her time was 20 minutes, 9 seconds and she

Long nails can be painful for dogs. The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently.

W e C are FACTS OF LIFE While most funeral homes and newspapers will write an obituary, some family members take it upon themselves to write the death notice, including a personalized account of a loved one’s life. If so, mention should be made of the deceased’s full name (and nickname), dates and locations of birth/marriage/death, the names of pre-deceased and surviving loved ones, schools attended, military service, places of employment and positions held, and memberships in organizations. Mention should also be made of the time and location of a funeral, visitation, and burial, as well as preferred charities for donations. Further detailing of the deceased’s hobbies, favorite passions, most oft-heard quotes, and preferred pursuits help make an obituary more meaningful and memorable. Many funeral homes provide forms for basic information and will write the full obituary for you as part of the services they provide. Some newspapers have specific style guidelines or restrictions on length, some only accept obituaries directly from funeral homes, and some only publish obituaries written by newspaper staff members. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER

Housekeeping Positions

Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
