Canine Health: Getting To the Heart of It (Family Features) According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 43 million dogs are estimated to be overweight or obese, and a primary risk of excess weight, in pets, is heart disease. And, just as humans often adopt a natural diet to help support cardiac health, feeding natural foods can also benefit their canine companions. When it comes to canine heart health, there are two key things for pet parents to consider: feed a balanced diet that is rich in highquality, natural foods and encourage regular exercise to help maintain lean body condition.
Introducing the Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s Pet of the Year!
Mac Takes Top Dog! McNamara “Mac” is an energetic, fun-loving Rottweiler. She is very loyal and enjoys spending time with her family on the farm. Mac’s favorite activities include exploring, going for car rides, working outside with her Dad, watching over her 2-year-old sister, Rhowen and laying outside on nice days. Mac is a gentle, kind and loving member of our family.
Mac received 224 of the 557 votes. A $50 donation will be made to a local animal shelter in Mac’s name. Congratulations, Mac!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Non-Stop Music Only He Can Hear --DEAR DR. ROACH: I hear music playing in my head at all times. I can’t stop it, even if I’m reading, having a conversation or being active. It’s there when I wake up in the night or in the morning. Even if I consciously stop it and try to hear only the ambient sounds around me, the music always comes back. Is this indicative of any major problems? I am a very healthy 64year-old male, and this is annoying. It has been going on for most of my life. I wonder if a psychiatrist could help. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head. One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessivecompulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders. However, my experience is that there are many, many normal people with no psychiatric illness who have music playing in their head almost all the time or all the time. Many people have had a song stuck in their head (often called an “earworm”), but a few people have this continuously. I had one patient in whom this was a major source of distress, and in that case, it appeared to be related to the use of an antidepressant. Solving anagrams and reading are supposed to help, but in your case I am almost sure that would be temporary. Sometimes playing the music that is in your head can stop it. There are a few case reports of treatment with medication (such as carbamazepine) being effective, but sometimes reassurance that this is almost normal makes it easier to deal with. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? -- K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of. In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous. You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed. Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question. Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent. Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTH SAYINGS AND THEIR ORIGINS “Fit as a Fiddle.” The phrase “fit as a fiddle” is often used to describe someone who is very healthy and full of energy. But what does fitness have to do with an instrument, anyway? Actually, very little. According to The Phrase Finder, “fit” didn’t originally mean healthy. It was actually used to represent the words “suitable and seemly.” Therefore, something that is fit as a fiddle would mean it was suitable for its purpose. Now “fit” frequently refers to one’s physical shape, and the phrase has evolved. “Survival of the fittest.” Again, the word “fittest” initially did not represent physical strength or well-being. Rather, in this phrase, attributed to Herbert Spencer and later to Charles Darwin, fittest referred to those who were best suited to their environment, or more plainly, those who were best able to survive. Today, it can mean anyone who is able to rise above the odds against them or beat the competition. “Strong as an ox.” The idiom “strong as an ox” has long represented a person who is unusually strong and able to persevere. Because oxen are large beasts of burden that were used instead of horses by American settlers before railroads were created, anyone compared to an ox would have to be someone capable of strong physical labor and ability. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Many believe this phrase to be a helpful rhyming device to remember to eat healthy food to maintain good physical health. However, according to Snopes, the first known version of this proverb comes from Wales in 1866 and stated, “eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Other sources trace the phrase to ancient Rome. Apples can have many health benefits, but no research has confirmed that eating an apple daily will safeguard individuals from any particular illness. A 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine did find that people who ate an apple required fewer prescription medications than those who did not.

Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Autumn Jeffery of Caledonia, NY as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Jeffery’s project was to build two Little Free Libraries to support the community, which has insufficient access to a public library. Caledonia Library has limited hours and the nearby town of York does not have a public library at all. Jeffery researched the project and collected donations of building materials and books, as well as met with local businesses to find a location to put Little Free Library locations. Jeffery sorted the donated books, built and assembled the libraries herself, installing one at the Cal-Mum Elementary School and the other at the York Elementary School where she gave a speech about citizenship. Jeffery stated, “I am proud to be a Gold Award Girl Scout. But to me, the real reward in all of this is that I have made a positive impact in my community and I have helped others.” Jeffery has been a Girl Scout for 13 years. She will receive her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, at the Gold Award Ceremony in June. The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a girl can be passionate about – in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be ongoing or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind

each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing. To learn more about the Girl Scouts of Western New York please visit gswny.org.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will.
Cohocton: Betty B. Buck of Cohocton, NY passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 with her daughters at her side in the Livington County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born January 9, 1934, at home in Campbell, NY the daughter of Floyd LaVee and Lena Jane (Lewis) Butler. She was a graduate of Campbell High School and earned her Associates Degree from Corning Community College. Betty retired from the Steuben County Department of Social Services where she was a social worker in the Preventive Services Unit. Betty is survived by her children; Todd (Lee) Buck of McDonald, Kansas, Tammra Buck of Savona, Penelope (Thomas Majka) Buck of Cortland; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and her former husband, Gerald Buck. She was predeceased by her sisters, Iowa (Raymond) Buck, Elaine (Harry) Taft, Alberta “Bert” Bates Wilson (Bill) and Joyce (Louie) Buchanan, and her brothers, Lewis Butler, Nolan (Carrie) Butler, Kasson (Ionne) Butler and Jay Butler. Betty liked to say that she talked for a living, but her passion was helping families keep their children healthy and safe. She loved to share her knowledge and advice, and she enjoyed playing with children and encouraging them to learn and thrive. Once she retired, her grandchildren were a constant source of joy as they entertained her and made her laugh. She also loved reading and surrounded herself with books and her Kindle filled with as many titles as she could fit into it. Following her wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral service. She asked that friends and family gather for a picnic in the summer to celebrate her life by sharing food, laughter, and stories of our time with her. Plans for the gathering have not yet been finalized. Memorial donations in Betty’s name may be made to the child-focused charity of your choice. Safety renovations for seniors’ homes Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women. Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger. As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery times. The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are admitted to the emergency room for injuries every year. People concerned about the safety of their homes or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer. Falls According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year. In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and high-traffic areas can help seniors stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping. Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motion-activated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary. A nightlight or LED lights placed near molding can help guide seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits. Physical limitations Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools. Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots. Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals. Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible. Smart Homes Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones. Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function. I wasn't speeding up to the bus. I was slowing down waiting for the reds to come on. I was confused and not sure what to do as they did not come on until I was at the front fender of the bus. I am asking that bus drivers don't Is there anyone within earshot of wait until the last second to turn the [local] shooting range that is on the reds. And I was disgusted disturbed by the daily shooting? that the blame was then put on Does everyone realize that this type me when they beeped the horn at of noise pollution MUST be me. They did not use that horn to disclosed when selling your house or warn the students as they were you could be liable? Maybe after dropping off kids as the bus was decades of use, an indoor facility on not even stopped yet. And I never the [local college] campus or said anything about my "precious"
time. I was not in a hurry, only confused. Next time I'll stop at the yellow lights....only to get rearended I'm sure. To the older "gentleman" whom we were unfortunate enough to sit by at our favorite restaurant. Not everyone appreciates hearing how you "severed the aorta" of a deer you shot from your tree stand. My wife and I had to sit there and listen as you described what was evidently a thrilling experience for you, all the while eating our vegetarian lunch that is usually a highlight of our week. I would expect this behavior from a twenties-something guy in [a fast food restaurant]--not a senior citizen in a sit-down establishment, where I assure you
that no one wants to hear about you bagging a trophy buck. Since you were the only one talking at your table, I can only assume that even your family was annoyed. Have a little class, hit the fast food joint, or better yet, stay home and eat by yourself. It is absolutely incredulous that if someone were to be caught by a police officer throwing a candy wrapper out the car window that they would be subject to a $350 fine in New York State, yet people in a supposedly upscale neighborhood in this town routinely place loose trash and recyclables out in 30 MPH winds to turn their neighborhood into a ‘royal’ mess. Is there no town ordinance that can address this issue?

How to get noticed in a crow ded job market - Bew are of hyperlinks. Adding hyperlinks to a resume can be hit or miss. When it’s a hit, a hiring m anager can click on a link in your resume and be taken directly to samples of your work. However, if you’re asked to submit your resume via an online application instead of sending it directly to a hiring m anager’s em ail address, then those same hyperlinks might be relegating your application to the trash bin before it’s ever seen. That’s because the database may be programmed to associate any documents with hyperlinks as spam, in which case the hiring manager will never see your application or resume. Hyperlinks can be useful and help you stand out, but only when they’re employed under the right circumstances.
