Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope; winter alone reminds us of the human condition. ~ Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic’s Notebook, 1966

KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Protect trees on the way home. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. Wrap the tree in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Commuting is a part of daily life for many working professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day. However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes. The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day. While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work. Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES As a Christmas tree, the white spruce is known for excellent foliage color, short stiff needles and good needle retention. The blue-green color is pleasant, but when needles are crushed, the tree doesn’t produce a favorable evergreen aroma. White spruce trees keeps their needles longer than other spruces.

585-335-9380 PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

PEACH BRUSCHETTA WITH BLUE CHEESE Serves 4 4 slices country bread 2 peaches Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing 1/4 pound blue cheese, gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes. While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact. When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

WINTERTIME CAN BE ‘SNOW’ MUCH FUN TO DISCOVER Winter storms are on the way. While many people are anxious to see landscapes covered in white, others already are counting down the days to spring blooms. Weather can be awe-inspiring and interesting, and learning the secrets about snow is no exception. Snow forms when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. Snow falls as snowflakes, which come in a variety of shapes. However, according to Mental Floss, snow also can precipitate as graupel or sleet. Graupel are pellets of opaque ice particles that fall through freezing cloud droplets. They are not the same as sleet, which are drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice. Snowflakes are generally small and accumulate to form visible snow coverings. However, snowflakes can be large. The largest snowflake on record was reported to be 15 inches across and eight inches thick. According to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” this giant snowflake was discovered at Fort Keogh, Montana, on January 28, 1887. Although it appears white, snow is actually clear and colorless. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says the complex structure and many facets of snow crystals results in visible light being reflected. Light is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, which gives snow its white appearance. Even though snow is more common in northern elevations and cold regions, snowfall is not exclusive to frigid climates. In the United States, snow has fallen in cities most often associated with sun and warmth, such as San Diego, Miami and Hawaii. The southern Italy town of Capracotta received 100 inches of snow in 18 hours on March 5, 2015. In spite of its location, Capracotta has been known to receive enormous one-day snowfalls. While snow can fall even in warm climates, the world record holder for the most snow belongs to a northern area. Mt. Baker ski resort in Washington state experienced 1,140 inches in the 1998/1999 winter season. Snow can fall at temperatures well above freezing. According to ScienceBits.com, snow can still fall at temperatures as warm as 46 F. For snow to fall when temperatures are warm, humidity has to be very low. Even though there’s a common perception that no two snowflakes are alike, this isn’t completely accurate. A scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research found two identical snow crystals in 1988. Also, similar results have been produced in laboratories. Snow is an interesting form of precipitation. It can be scarce or plentiful, and may feature tiny snowflakes or extremely large ones. Snow also may take on the color of its surrounding environment.

Offer Your Family the Gift of Giving this Year Having recently celebrated Thanksgiving Day and remembered our many blessings, may we not forget the twin companions of gratitude: joy and generosity. Being truly thankful for friends, family and the many good things in one’s life can create that joyful state of mind which often overflows into good will and compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. Regrettably, with the push to purchase following so closely upon the heels of, and in some cases even preceding, Thanksgiving, this “heart-healthy” Spirit of Giving is all too often lost in the following flurry of activities. For this reason and several others, Giving Tuesday was started. Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and after the prime shopping days of Plaid Friday, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. While there is certainly much festive fun to be had in preparing for the holidays and selecting the perfect gifts for our friends and loved ones, balancing this with a mindfulness of those in need is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others, to our children and even to ourselves. For the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, this isn’t just a pleasant, seasonal platitude, these are words we live by. We practice giving back to our community in our pages and beyond. Each week, free of charge, we announce upcoming Non-Profit Events which boosts community support for non-profit and local charitable causes and community support organizations. Adoptable pets receive our help finding homes by sharing their photos in our Pet Place section. We are also privileged to bring you inspirational and interesting Hometown Stories from all over our readership area. Libraries are provided the opportunity at no cost to publish announcements on educational activities for the community, professional training programs, literacy programs and more in our Library Columns, while many organizations are able to ask for assistance thanks to our Who Can Volunteer section. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver also supports local schools, literacy, the fight against hunger, MS research and other causes. We encourage all of our readers to take time on Giving Tuesday to find a way to help those who are struggling this holiday season. Giving money is only one way to help; gifts of time, food, acts of service and even simple holiday cards can make such a difference in the lives of those who are struggling or lonely this year. Visit www.givingtuesday.org for more information on this global initiative or connect with charitable organizations in your own community. You can search through Non-profit events and local volunteer opportunities on our website at www.gvpennysaver.com. “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” — Winston S. Churchill

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Finding renewed vigor: Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Geneseo Community Main Street is once again hosting fun, family-friendly events for this yearís Christmas in the Village, a yearly tradition for families all around Geneseo and surrounding towns to begin celebrating the cheer of Christmas. Cookies, elves, horse drawn wagons, caroling, tree lighting and Mr. & Mrs. Claus will make Main Street feel like a cozy winter wonderland on this bustling Saturday, December 1st afternoon. Community members begin their Christmas festivities with the Main Street Elf Stroll. Children can pick up their scavenger hunt cards at local participating businesses and begin searching for sneaky elves hiding in plain sight in businesses along Main Street. These scavenger hunt cards will be turned into Sweet Arts Bakery by 5:00 pm, on Saturday December 8th. The more elves they find, the better their chances of winning Bear Bucks! Bear Bucks are Main Street currency that can be redeemed at any participating Main Street business, for pizza, books, cookies, toys & more! There will also be one Grand Prize winner who gets to take home a paperweight of the original Emmeline Wadsworth Memorial Fountain. At 1:00 pm, the Cookie Stroll will begin. The cost to participate is $10 and there will be a limited number of tickets available at EventBrite beginning November 6th, and at Sweet Arts Bakery or the Not Dot Shop. Registration dayof will be at the Big Tree Inn and the Tompkins Bank of Castile. Participants will receive a map to explore Main Street and stop by businesses who will have delicious cookies from local bakeries to gobble up or save for later. While walking around, be on the lookout for some of the SUNY Geneseo Acapella groups. The South Side Boys, the Geneseo Emmelodics, and Between the Lines will be rotating between participating stores throughout the day to carol and bring Christmas cheer to all of those who participate! If the next shop is just a little too far to walk on a full stomach, the Horse Drawn Wagon will be the perfect break to regain your cookie appetite. Wagon rides will run from 1:00 pm 4:00 pm, circling from the center of town to the Wadsworth Homestead. And if you stick around late enough, you may bump into Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus as they stroll Main Street from

4:00pm - 6:00 pm. Rumor has it they have a sack of candy canes for the good little kids they see around! Beginning at 2:00pm, there will be hot cocoa in the parking lot in front of Florence’s Perpetual Estate Sale, a perfect opportunity to take a break between activities or just warm the whole family up! If the kids are in need of a break, Howard Hanna will also be hosting Christmas coloring between 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. If you’re hungry, Sweet Arts Bakery and other participating restaurants will be offering dinner specials for the whole family beginning at 4:00 pm and running until the 6:00 pm festivities begin at the Village Park with the lighting of the tree, followed by a parade to the Bear Fountain for ChristmaSing. Everyone will be encouraged to join in on the caroling. Cookies & photos with Santa will follow at Touch of Grayce. Warm up with some hot chocolate. Bring your camera and take a quick snap while your little ones sit on Santa’s lap and tell him all that they want this Christmas! There is something for everyone this year at Geneseo’s Christmas in the Village! HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other and potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. Thanks to all those who came to my husband’s rescue when he fell October 31 in the driveway at the Livingston Skilled Nursing Facility. What a bunch of caring and helpful people. Thanks again to all. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas. My daughter and I were walking on the Trolley Trail on Saturday, November 10. It was very cold and very windy, and our orange, white, and blue BB8 Blanket fell out of the stroller. We didn't notice until we got home, and it was too cold to take her out again. The next morning, we went out looking

There are certain stores in my area that always have only one (or on rare occasions, two) cash registers open. It drives me absolutely NUTS that people will be in line with at least fifty items and will very clearly see me or someone else behind them in line with only one item but not offer to let us ahead of them. Please consider this the next time you are shopping and the person in line behind you has only an item or two. I promise, it takes mere seconds to for us to get through the line.

blood work results. Mainly I was concerned about my thyroid #. You should know my name after 10 years and maybe know why I am there. When I arrived, my 1pm appointment was really 2pm. They said sorry we were swamped this morning (they close between 12-1pm for lunch). When I finally was brought to the examination room, I was told the doctor would be in shortly. 35 minutes later, my doctor came into the room and said, “good news, your blood work came back great!" Once she took the time from my 5-minute visit to glance at her computer, she noticed my thyroid was off the charts. She thought her mistake was funny! I did not! Needless to say, I’m in the process of finding a new doctor.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: Articles on strokes or TIAs rarely mention that they can be caused by a congenital heart defect. I had a family member with a patent foramen ovale, found at age 54, after he’d had several strokes. He had surgery to repair it and has been well ever since. I would like to know why a PFO isn’t often mentioned or considered. When I see an obituary for a young person who died suddenly, I wonder if there was an undiagnosed hole in the person’s heart. One in 6 people has a hole in the heart; that is a high percentage. I think the public should be educated and made aware of this congenital condition. -- J.R. ANSWER: A patent foramen ovale (which literally means “open oval-shaped window”) is a remnant of our embryology. The foramen ovale is a small open flap that is necessary to send oxygenated blood from the placenta to the body of the developing fetus. In about 25 percent of people (that’s 1 in 4, even higher than you thought), the “hole” doesn’t completely close. PFO is the most common of the “holes” in the heart (ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defects are the other common ones). A stroke is caused by the death of brain cells. PFOs are certainly implicated in strokes. In general, the younger and healthier the person, the more likely it is that a “cryptogenic” stroke (one with no obvious cause) may be due to a PFO. What is likely is that a blood clot can pass through the foramen ovale and go to the brain’s blood vessel, blocking off blood supply to an area of the brain, causing a stroke. The absolute increase in stroke risk is hard to quantify. For people who have never had a stroke, it is generally not recommended to close the PFO. This surgery has risks, and these risks probably outweigh the small potential benefit. For people who have had a stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke from PFO is higher. One group has created a model (the RoPE score) to help predict the likelihood of recurrent stroke. This can help the clinician examine the benefits of surgical repair of the PFO. Surgery is most likely to benefit younger people without traditional risk factors for stroke. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that letting vinegar touch your skin causes arthritis. Is there any danger in using vinegar as a cleaning agent? -- N.J.A. ANSWER: I often get asked whether apple cider vinegar cures arthritis (it doesn’t) or can help relieve symptoms (it might, but there is no good evidence that it does), but I have never heard anyone ask about vinegar touching the skin causing internal problems. Vinegar is a mild acid (most are about 5 percent acetic acid), which normally isn’t particularly irritating to the skin, and shouldn’t be absorbed. Even if it were, acetic acid is found in the body (it’s an important molecule in several metabolic pathways), and your body can use it as an energy source. There is no reason to be concerned about being exposed to household vinegar. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Genesee Valley Educational Partnership 80 Munson Street, LeRoy, NY 14482

(NAPSI)—It is often said that, in real estate, it’s all about “location, location, location.” However, when it comes to rental properties, the key to maximizing their potential is all about “timing, timing, timing.”

EOE

New vacation home rental industry data shows early fall is the ideal time to buy a property to quickly turn the investment into profit. Here’s why: • In order to plan ahead for spring and summer trips, many travelers book their vacation rental accommodations in January and February, according to a survey of vacation rental owners conducted by vacation rental website VRBO. • Meanwhile, Quicken Loans data shows it takes about 155 days to shop for a new vacation home, purchase it, and get the newly acquired property ready. This means a prospective vacation homeowner should shop at least five months before vacation rentals’ busy booking season in January and February to get everything prepared to rent to travelers looking for the comforts of a whole home, whether it’s a beachfront condo or a cozy mountain cabin. “We often see, at this time of year after travelers have wrapped up their summer trips, that they wish they had a vacation home of their own to return to next year,” says Bill Furlong, vice president of HomeAway, Americas. “This schedule may not follow traditional trends of the real estate calendar, but early fall is the right time to buy so preparations can be done by January, when people search for next summer’s vacation rental.” A survey of vacation rental owners who list with HomeAway and VRBO shows that more than half of them say they can cover 75 percent or more of their mortgage payments each year from rental income.ii For those interested in getting into the burgeoning vacation rental business, VRBO’s Earn Tool can help them evaluate how much a specific property can potentially earn through vacation rental income. By visiting www. vrbo.com/earn and entering the vacation home’s address and basic property information, current and aspiring vacation homeowners can get an estimate of annual rental income potential based on comparable properties already successfully renting on VRBO. “The popularity of vacation rentals continues to grow each year,” says Furlong. “An early start and an informed shopping experience with the help of VRBO’s Earn Tool can create a significant financial opportunity for those looking to enter the vacation rental industry.”

Immediate Position Available: FORD experience preferred, however other training considered. Competitive hourly pay based on ability (no unpredictable flat rate). Health insurance, retirement, paid vacation, and paid personal days provided.
