BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms. Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes. Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk. The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus. Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports. Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following: • Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com. • Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans. • Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky. • Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time. Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY
[W]ell-apparell’d April on the heel Of limping winter treads... ~ William Shakespeare
While New York and Boston host the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the United States, more than 100 parades are held in honor of St. Patrick throughout the country each year. For those who love a good parade but don’t have much time on their hands, the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, is home to the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s Day parade. The parade takes place on the city’s Bridge Street, which measures just 98 feet in length.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Gus Gus. I got that name before my family saw that I have a pattern on my belly that looks like two G’s! I came from Lollypop Farm when I was four months old and now I am a 3-year-old goofball! I love to talk, parkour off furniture and people, and play fetch with my favorite toys. I always greet my family at the door when they come home! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FUN FOR YOUNGSTERS Many families decorate their homes for St. Patrick’s Day. While such decorations are rarely as extensive as Christmas decorations, parents can encourage their kids’ creative sides by organizing crafts projects for youngsters and their friends. Design projects where kids can create some of the symbols of St. Patrick’s Day that appear in popular culture, such as four-leaf clovers or leprechauns.

These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended my fundraiser on February 24, 2018. The outpouring of love and concern was overwhelming. I would especially like to thank Commander Bill Morgan, President Pat Willsea, John Fredericy, Larry Gnau, members of the Springwater American Legion Post 905, members of the Wayland American Legion Post 402, and the Lighthouse Wesleyan Church, and all those who donated food, raffle items and their time to make this event so successful. A special note of thanks to my family, the doctors and staff at Rochester General Hospital and to the staff at the Livingston County Nursing and Rehab Center for their love, support and exceptional care in helping me get through these past four months. The surgeries and rehab have been lifealtering and without your dedication and encouragement I truly believe I would not have made so much progress in my recovery. I am overwhelmed and humbled by your generosity, kind wishes and outpouring of love. ~Rick Tripp, Jr. SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY The color green is everywhere come St. Patrick’s Day, but celebrants may be surprised to learn that blue is the color that was once most affiliated with St. Patrick himself. Numerous paintings depict St. Patrick wearing blue vestments. But green is the color now most instantly associated with Ireland, which is widely referred to as the “Emerald Isle.” Ireland’s lush countryside and rolling green hills attract millions of visitors each year. The color green can be found just about everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day, even if Patrick himself was partial to blue.

Thank you to Shelly and Keni Read for helping me plow out my elderly mother's driveway on 3/2/18. While the snow was beautiful it was also very heavy. The Grinch is back again this Christmas in our well-to-do town south of Rochester. There are no Christmas lights along our Main Street, only dark dreary winter pennants. Several years ago, which was the last year our illuminated Christmas lanterns were put up, we noticed that there was
something wrong with them. Upon further inspection, many if not most of the lights inside them were burned out. The lanterns were still intact. Someone was either too lazy to replace the bulbs or it was planned to get rid of them. At least they gave a nice warm glow to our Main Street. All of the surrounding hamlets have Christmas lights except us. They have the Christmas spirit! Sadly dark winter pennants are a poor substitute for lighted decorations. Drivers-If you're making a left hand turn, turn into the LEFT lane!!

For w armer climates, a w ide-brimmed hat w ill guard against sunburn, overheating and overexposure. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Congratulations, Lamb. This is the week to finish your project and then bask in your well-earned approval. (And if you like, you also can say “bah” to all those detractors.) TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The bold Bovine could find a new opportunity too intriguing to be ignored. But don’t charge into it. Go slowly so you see how things develop as you get more involved. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might try to soften your stand on that important issue. A little more flexibility actually could get you what you’re looking for. A new friend enters the picture midweek. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your inner voice is on the mark when it advises you to tackle that family problem now! The sooner you’re able to come to terms with it, the better it will be for everyone. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Someone reveals important news about a longtime associate. But before you decide how to deal with this information, make sure it’s reliable, and not simply self-serving. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some intensive soul-searching early in the week can help you reach a decision by week’s end that should please both you and the other person involved. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The possibility of a career change is intriguing. Learn more about what it can offer and what it cannot. Weigh everything carefully. And ask questions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Work is your priority this week as you try to make up for lost time. Expect help from someone who cares about you. Things take a welcome turn by the weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A health problem causes some anxiety early in the week. But prompt medical attention soon eases everyone’s concerns. Enjoy an arts-filled weekend. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As much as you might resent it, a changing situation could require you to adjust your plans accordingly. The good news: An associate agrees to cooperate. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) That old problem is finally resolved, just in time for you to take on a new work-related project. This one could be the super door-opener you’ve been looking for. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The early part of the week presents some difficult hurdles. But once you get over them, you can start to focus on matters that are more important to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and your dedication to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult that might be. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cruising tips and tricks Cruising can be an ideal vacation for people of any age, but particularly for seniors. Cruises combine all-inclusive meal packages with accommodations, breathtaking ports of call and pre-arranged activities, so vacationers do not have to lift a finger for days on end. Cruising also can be a social activity, meaning singletons can meet up with other like-minded people and enjoy the cruising experience together. Cruise Lines International Association, a global organization advocating for the cruising community, found that 25.8 million passengers expected to take a cruise in 2017, and various cruise companies invested more than $6.8 billion in new ocean vessels.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

Renowned Ballerina Aesha Ash Encourages Byron-Bergen Students to Dream Bigger By Christine Klem Ballet star Aesha Ash told the hundreds of students at Byron-Bergen Elementary that when she was growing up in Rochester, “there were no princesses or fairies that looked like me. There were no magical creatures, unicorns or swans that looked like me.” When she dreamed of being a ballerina, she was told that there were no black ballerinas, and that she would never succeed. She dreamed anyway, and she did succeed. She was accepted to the legendary School of American Ballet where she was chosen to join the New York City Ballet when she was 18 – one of the first black dancers in the corps. How did this world-famous dancer and winner of the National Women’s History Museum’s 2016 Women Making History Award, come to be in Byron-Bergen? Fourth-grade teacher Alyson Tardy heard about Ash’s Swan Dreams Project, which was founded in 2011. This project uses powerful imagery to counter negative stereotypes of race and socio-economic background and inspire children to dream bigger. She thought that Ash’s message would be a great tie-in to the school’s character education program. She invited Ash and coordinated the special visit. Students surprised their visitor with a hallway lined with artwork featuring swans of many shapes and colors. “The art is so beautiful,” said Ash. “I’m honored that the kids welcomed me this way.” At the crowded assembly, Ash shared her story with attentive students, beginning with her passion for dance and her determination to become a ballerina. She explained how she was part of Rochester’s Urban Suburban program, and constantly faced questions and misunderstanding from peers about her background and city neighborhood. Her family was not rich; she told

the story of borrowing toe shoes for her first tryout. Even when Ash became a professional ballet dancer, she felt a sense of not belonging, of being different. “All my life, I’ve fought to change perceptions and dispel myths – for myself, my family and my Rochester community,” she said. “The more that people told me that I couldn’t do something, the more I wanted to do it.” Ash’s professional dance career lasted 13 years. It included eight years with the NYC Ballet along with performing in the Bejart Ballet in Switzerland and Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, and with many other companies as a freelance artist. She and her family currently live in California where she is working to make the Swan Dreams Project an afterschool program. She hopes to open a studio where she can teach ballet to children who are not able to afford lessons. The Swan Dreams Project video she shared with Byron-Bergen students can be found at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v= 7h58rXzsNhU

In the wake of recent events, there has been a lot of discussion about the impact that playing violent video games has on today’s youth and the way that they react to situations. How do you think our youth are influenced by video games? • They are just games and do not encourage violent behavior in youth. • Games that focus on shooting the opponent make our youth believe that this is the way to overcome tough situations. • More research needs to be done to fully understand the impact. GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother has stage 4 cancer. She just went to a dermatologist, who performed Mohs surgery on her nose. I am BEYOND upset by this unethical behavior. The country is already deeply in debt, and Medicare is paying for this? Unconscionable! Not to mention the pain and suffering of my mother, who is now at risk of a secondary infection. I was sickened by the entire ordeal. -- J.B. ANSWER: I agree with you completely that often patients with terminal diseases receive unnecessary care. There have been studies clearly documenting this. However, the studies don’t answer why, in a particular case, a physician performed these treatments, which add only pain, anxiety and expense. I suppose it is possible that the motivation is simple greed; however, I still have enough faith in my colleagues that I think that is a very unusual reason; I think it’s far more likely that a specialist just doesn’t see the big picture. There’s an old expression that when all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail, and I think some specialists see a problem and fix it without realizing that the problem they are fixing isn’t likely to ever cause symptoms. For example, primary-care doctors order unnecessary tests, especially screening tests. I see mammograms ordered for women with advanced colon or ovarian cancer who are in palliative care, and this makes no sense. I have heard some physicians mention that insurance companies monitor the frequency of “quality indicators,” such as mammograms, which affect their ratings and reimbursement. That’s an example of a well-meaning system motivating wrong behavior. I should emphasize that not all care for terminal patients is useless. If the goal is to improve quality of life or reduce suffering, then I am all for it, after a consideration of the costs (pain and inconvenience as well as dollar costs). *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a bloodborne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER Dehydration is a dangerous condition that can cause a host of complications and even prove fatal in severe cases. But as dangerous as dehydration can be, many cases are entirely preventable. The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink enough water. When the body does not take in as much water as it puts out, it can become dehydrated. People who live in warm climates or in elevated altitudes may lose more water than those who do not. In addition, water loss is accelerated during strenuous exercise, highlighting the emphasis men and women must place on drinking enough water during their workouts. Water helps the body in myriad ways, many of which might surprise people unaware of just how valuable water can be to the body.
