CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off.

Extreme heat can be dangerous to pets, who often suffer in silence when dealing with the consequences of extreme heat. Pet owners who take certain precautions and learn to recognize signs of a pet struggling with heat can better protect their animals from succumbing to rising temperatures.

Thank you to the Avon Garden Club for the beautiful flowers in the planters throughout the village and around the park. You all do a beautiful job. I especially love the flower cart. Thank you to the village crew for your help hanging the military banners and keeping our village looking so nice. The Memorial Day parade was great as usual. Thanks! On Thursday evening, June 14, after shopping, we stopped at Burger King on Eastern Blvd. in Canandaigua for a light supper meal. When we went to pay, we were informed that the gentleman ahead of us had already picked up the tab. What a wonderful gesture! We did not catch his name or address, so we can't acknowledge him personally. But we would at

I recently enjoyed a local town parade. But there was one float I didn't find appropriate. It had heavy metal music playing loudly, people with painted, blood-like faces, and other gory features. I know this is advertising for your Halloween party, but please, less creepy stuff ? There are children watching and I find some of the

least like to thank him in this venue for his kindness and generosity. . So, if he happens to be reading this, a heartfelt "thank you." In our 70+ years on this planet, we have never experienced anything like this before. Mike and Gerda Speziale, Naples, NY I have been running on the canal towpath for years and am finally getting around to publicly thanking the courteous town landscape crews that mow the grass along the towpath and in Perinton Park. I very much appreciate the way you pause your machines when pedestrians and bicyclists approach, not resuming until we are out of the line of fire from your grass

cutting equipment. Thank you! Many thanks to whoever turned my husband’s treasured sun glasses lost at the Bristol Fun Day on the 10th! They belonged to his father who died many years ago. The Ray Ban glasses in the battered original case were anything but impressive at first sight, so we were delighted when we called the Bristol Town Hall to learn they were found and safe. My husband was grieving the loss. What a tribute to kindness. Many blessings to the finder and the Town Hall Staff. Sincere Thanks to two individual Good Samaritans, who driving by on a very rainy and windy night, stopped to help us pull down a large tree branch in our yard that had broken and was

displays very disturbing. Kids are sensitive, and have very good memories. It's likely to give them nightmares! I remember when I was a kid, and I saw something I found scary, I would not be able to stop thinking about it, and would keep my mom up. PLEASE think about the community, and the kids and parents!

wife's birthday to come to this place. Our waitress was very friendly for the first 15 minutes lol. After that all went to bananas!!! Everything went wrong from A to Z to say the least. We are not the only customers who had this very bad experience. Our friends had it all. They never celebrated my wife's birthday with me. The owner was embarrassed by it. Not easy being a waitress I know but I still gave 20% tips…Come on.

We work so very hard to endure life's journey. Therefore, we want to go out to a very nice dinner with our hard earned money to have a great meal and service with the spouse and IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK? We have heard bad reviews about a local small town restaurant that specializes in Prime Ribs near our home, but we decided to give it a chance. I've made reservation for my

Just read with great agreement, the "Vent" of June 1, 2018, concerning residents in his town not taking care of their property. We too, live in a Rochester area town. We have watched as older residents, pass on or move away. The "new" residents DO NOT take care of their homes and/or yards. We have called our Town,

going to fall in the road. In addition, after they got it down, one of them had a chain saw and they cut up the limb and helped take the pieces out of the road. We doubt if we could have done this ourselves and could have been hurt while trying. Many thanks again from Bob and Debbie Joseph, Rt. 53, Ingleside, NY.

mailed our Supervisor, and all to no avail. As our Cities become more "Upscale", the more impoverished, head to the surrounding suburbs. Leading to "Urban Sprawl." Our street looks like a War Zone. Yards not mowed and trash just sitting by the roadside. Most do not have a trash collector. They expect the town to pick up garbage. We may have no choice, but to move out if things don't improve. This is getting crazy. Please, please people, take pride in our neighborhood!!! People still burn their garbage in Livingston County. It’s not allowed!! Does anyone know who I can contact? I have my windows open to air out my home and have to smell their garbage! Need help to give me information on who to call.

INFLAMMATION

We Gladly Welcome New Patients! 4384 Lakeville Rd., Geneseo Most insurances accepted. Dr. Daniel Cocris

Remember Dr. Doaga will see Dr. Washburn’s patients at our office.

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Was Son Right to Ignore His Doctor’s Advice? --DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve suffered from essential tremor for 16 years. I take 500 mg of primidone and 40 mg of propranolol twice daily. I’ve gradually increased the dose over the years, and the combination works quite well. What is the highest dose of these medications that I can take? Also, are there any new drugs on the market that have been proven to help? -- S.S. ANSWER: Primidone, a medication indicated for seizures, often is used off-label for essential tremor. The normal dose for essential tremor is 250-500 mg at night, but doses up to 750 mg sometimes are used. For seizures, the highest recommended dose is 2,000 mg, so although yours is at the high end of normal for essential tremor (“essential,” by the way, simply means we don’t know what is causing it; it isn’t essential for anything), you still are at a dose that’s well below the safe limit. I suspect that because you have been on it for so long, your body is used to this dose. The usual starting dose is 25 mg. Propranolol is used for many conditions, including high blood pressure and preventing migraines, but its use in essential tremor also is off-label, meaning that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug for use for this condition. “Off-label” doesn’t necessarily mean your prescription is wrong or dangerous, only that it hasn’t been approved by the FDA. In your case, the combination of primidone and propranolol frequently is used and recommended in the medical literature. For essential tremor, experts have recommended doses up to 320 mg per day, but the dose can be limited by slow heart rate or low blood pressure. If you are doing well, there is no reason to change. Other medications frequently used for essential tremor include gabapentin and topiramate. There also are surgical treatments, deep brain stimulation, gamma knife radiation and ultrasound for resistant cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. (NAPSI)—Have you ever pondered the delicious cup of coffee served up at your favorite coffee shop and wished your hurried morning home-brewed cup could be just as good? If you use one of the push-button pod brewing systems, you are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor, value and the environment. Do you realize that when you buy coffee pods, you are paying about $40 per pound of coffee and adding greatly to the local landfill? A drip coffeemaker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but you probably waste half the coffee that you brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee.

ALBION: 15797 Ridge Road (between Murray and Albion) 6/27-30 (9-4pm) GRANDDADDY OF ESTATE SALES Antiques, vintage, collectibles. You won’t want to miss this sale hosted by renaissancehouseholdsales.com

Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers, you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and what’s more, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer such as the AeroPress coffeemaker you can brew a smooth, rich cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The AeroPress has the unique capability to brew espresso so you can make café-quality lattes at home. The process is simple, cleanup is fast and easy, and the grounds, including the filter, are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Use a manual brewing device, brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and you’ll get the most out of every bag of coffee you buy.

Why buy life insurance? Facing one’s mortality and the prospect of leaving family members behind is not always easy. Death, financial security and planning for the future are all difficult subjects, but planning ahead can make matters much easier in the long run. Life insurance needs frequently come up when making plans, and many people find that purchasing a life insurance policy is a worthwhile investment. Life insurance holds an important place in overall financial planning. One of the most apparent benefits of life insurance is that it will provide a considerable sum of cash upon the insured’s death, which can be put toward the cost of funeral arrangements, housing and dependent care. Beyond end-of-life bills and care, life insurance can offer other advantages, say the experts at Allstate Insurance Company. Life insurance can provide a family with a financial safety net. When a beneficiary is named, life insurance can serve as an inheritance for that person or people. Heirs may face estate taxes after a loved one dies, and life insurance benefits may help offset all or a portion of the costs.

Business owners also can use life insurance policies to their advantage. Including life insurance with the list of other benefits offered to prospective employees can entice topnotch candidates. Sole proprietors may use life insurance as a business continuation plan so that insurance proceeds can keep the business in the black until it is sold or a replacement owner is found.

There may be benefits to life insurance while a person is living as well. The life insurance information site Term Life 2 Go says that, depending on the policy, life insurance can be borrowed against to pay off debt, buy a house or live off of dividends from the life insurance investment. This can provide a source of supplemental retirement income.

Shopping for life insurance requires careful research and an understanding of the products available. Consumers should have a thorough understanding of term and whole life policies, what premiums will cost, what the death benefit will pay, and if there are any living benefits. For example, living benefits may cover some costs for chronically or terminally ill people.

Gateway Financial advisors say that many life insurance plans Working with an experienced life insurance advisor can help are extremely flexible and can be modified as needs change. Death benefits may be decreased if desired, and premiums can people navigate the types of policies available to them. be skipped, reduced or increased.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

Dansville WWII Hero Honored By Lisa Hill Senator Catharine Young (R, C, I - 57th District), presented medals, including the Bronze Star, to the family of the late Arthur Veeder during a ceremony Saturday, June 9th at the Daniel Goho American Legion Post in Dansville. Attending the ceremony were Mr. Veeder’s widow, Velma, his daughter Sharon Sebok, grandson, Carson Nelson, and several other family members and friends. Mr. Veeder grew up in Cohocton and was half way through his senior year at Cohocton High School when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in January of 1944. He served as a rifleman in the 260th Infantry Regiment of the 65th Infantry Division. After arriving in Germany in March of 1945, his regiment endured 55 straight days of combat as the U.S. Army advanced into Germany. Corporal Veeder received a Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious service during the Central European Campaign in 1945. Senator Young presented his family with his Bronze Star and other medals during the ceremony. “It was my honor to present Corporal Veeder’s family with the military medals he earned during his courageous service to our nation during World War II,” Senator Young said. “We cannot imagine the horrors Corporal Veeder faced during combat but, he faced them for us. He faced them to preserve America, democracy and freedom.”

Senator Cathy Young presents Velma Veeder, wife of the late Corporal Arthur Veeder, with the medals he earned during World War II.

European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Bar, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the U.S. Army Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar. He also received the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross and the New York State Medal for Merit with three Silver Devices.

“We can never adequately repay veterans like Corporal Veeder for their bravery and sacrifice,” Senator Young said. “But we can In addition to the Bronze Star, Corporal honor them with our eternal gratitude and Veeder received the Good Conduct Medal, the admiration.”

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.

DINING OUT WITH CHILDREN Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM Place foods in the slow cooker. If the stove is not an option because other components of the meal are being baked or broiled, grilled foods can be placed in ceramic slow cookers with lids. This can potentially keep foods warm for longer periods of time than aluminum foil tents without sacrificing flavor.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.

For busy professionals, compromised energy levels can be especially problematic, causing workers to fall behind and maybe even forcing them to work extra hours just to catch up. While infrequent days of low energy should not pose too great a threat, working professionals who routinely find their energy levels sagging by the end of the workday might want to take certain steps to boost their energy and ensure their productivity doesn’t wane.

Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.
