A huge Thank You from Pittsford Mendon High School to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Pittsford Volunteer Fire Department, Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance, Keenan Funeral Home, Sutherland Auto, Life Net of New York and the Mendon student actors for participating in the DWI crash reenactment held on 5/4. It not only delivered a compelling message, it also helped heighten the awareness of making positive decisions by our students. Their participation played a key role in the smooth facilitation of the event and was very much appreciated. Thank you to many people who came to my assistance after a car accident. I had an accident in
Webster. I want to thank the police officers, fire department, paramedics, and staff at Yolickity, multiple bystanders and a special thank you to Kevin and Nancy. They removed many items from my car including 3 car seats. They installed a car seat in their car to take me and my granddaughter home. God bless you all.
Thank you to the Avon Chamber of Commerce for the honor of Citizen of the Year and to all who attended the gathering. We truly appreciate your presence. Special thanks to Cindy Zhe and Marcia Andres for their presentation. Mary Lou Marks & Susan Pusloskie
stamps to! Also maybe they should sell their land to receive money to live before any other aid....
I realize that most all of us pay a lot of taxes and it is a big problem in our life. This is what I don't know is how can a person or persons receive welfare or any kind of public aid and still own property like land?? When it’s time to pay property taxes who do you think pay their property taxes?? Maybe the state should take a closer look on who they give money or food
If you pay attention to the news, or newspapers more and more married females are using both their names to identify themselves, maiden name, then married name, you took your vows to marry this person and to carry your spouse’s last name, I think people know who you are, or is it an identity crisis? Hey, look at me. At income tax time do you file single, or jointly? There’s only room for 1 last name. Together as one. If you're over 65 be careful about doctors recommending surgery. Get a second opinion. My eye doctor pushed cataract surgery for 5 years and even threatened my driver's license if I
A heartfelt thank you to Ron Beach Jr. of J.B. Sportswear for giving a heart patient a well needed chuckle. A small local business with a huge heart and great community service. We will be forever grateful!
Each weekday morning I pass a school bus in Bloomfield and witness the driver staying pulled over after a pick up so the traffic behind the bus can clear out. Their consideration for the line of cars keeps the children safer when traffic is not so anxious and speeding around the slower moving bus. KUDOS!
didn't do it. I got a second opinion and NO SURGERY was recommended! Doctors aren't perfect and some are thinking more of their business than our medical care. I urge residents of [local town] to vote against the proposed Community Center on June 19th. We do not need a new library. The present one is quite new and expansive. We do not need a new Community Center and Recreation Department. Local High Schools and the local college have year round programs for families. There is a new YMCA. TAXES are high enough now!
Thank you to the Avon Garden Club for the beautiful flowers in the planters throughout the village and around the park. You all do a beautiful job. I especially love the flower cart. Thank you to the village crew for your help hanging the military banners and keeping our village looking so nice. The Memorial Day parade was great as usual. Thanks!

Fireworks Are Illegal - Please be considerate of your neighbors and DO NOT SET OFF FIREWORKS. Fireworks upset babies, young children, veterans, pets, horses, all animals, and people who are trying to sleep so they can get up for work in the morning and they ARE ILLEGAL. If you don't care about my rights and how you are intruding on my personal space, I am not going to feel bad for calling the police on you for I apologize if my barking dog wakes you up at 8 AM, I had no breaking the law. Please don't be so self-centered and selfish and think idea that you work at night. You should've told me. DID YOU KNOW? While high school seniors on the cusp of graduating and moving on to college give ample thought to their college majors, many are likely to change majors at least once after enrolling in a college or university. According to the University of La Verne, between 50 and 70 percent of college students change majors at least once, and many of them will change their majors three times before they graduate. The University also reports that 50 percent of college graduates pursue careers that are not related to their majors. Career and personality assessments can help students determine which subjects they may want to study upon enrolling in a college or university. Such assessments can help students discover their interests, and then students can work with advisors and career counselors at their colleges or universities to find majors that align with those interests. High school seniors on their way to college in the coming months can rest easy that, even if they don’t know what to study when they arrive on college campuses this fall, many of their fellow freshmen are equally uncertain.

HOME-BREWED COFFEE THAT’S AS GOOD AS IT GETS (NAPSI)—Have you ever pondered the delicious cup of coffee served up at your favorite coffee shop and wished your hurried morning home-brewed cup could be just as good? If you use one of the push-button pod brewing systems, you are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor, value and the environment. Do you realize that when you buy coffee pods, you are paying about $40 per pound of coffee and adding greatly to the local landfill? A drip coffeemaker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but you probably waste half the coffee that you brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers, you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and what’s more, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer such as the AeroPress coffeemaker you can brew a smooth, rich cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The AeroPress has the unique capability to brew espresso so you can make café-quality lattes at home. The process is simple, cleanup is fast and easy, and the grounds, including the filter, are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Use a manual brewing device, brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and you’ll get the most out of every bag of coffee you buy.

BREEZE THROUGH SPRING CLEANING Tackle the clutter in steps. Spring cleaning can be daunting, so take small steps and approach spaces one at a time. Strive to find everything a permanent home. Create “ donate” and “ trash” piles for items you no longer use or need.
DID YOU KNOW? Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vegan Does Not Need Fish to be Healthy --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been vegan for 15 years. I avoid sugar, limit salt and have no caffeine. Recently, a pharmacist told me that I will not get proper protein unless I add fish to my diet. However, long ago, my doctor told me that my vegan diet was good and that I should take vitamin B-12 daily, which I have been doing. What are your thoughts on adding fish? -- S.N. ANSWER: I agree with your doctor. A vegan diet can be very healthy, and avoiding sugar in particular helps assure that it is. The issue of adequate protein is brought up frequently, but most Americans consume more than twice the recommended daily allowance of protein. Plant foods have plenty of protein, and you certainly do not need to eat fish in order to get adequate protein. I think fish can be a healthy part of a diet, but it is not necessary.

Duplantis urged followers to help him fulfill the request, reassuring them that the goal wasn’t to raise money to fund the purchase, but to have followers join him in “believing” in God for it to happen.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital several months ago with poor heart function and only 10 percent kidney function. He has been on dialysis three times a week since then. We have been inquiring for several months about his current kidney function, and we cannot get an answer. We are just curious as to whether there has been any improvement. -- S.K. ANSWER: Dialysis is a way of replacing kidney function when the kidneys can no longer remove enough of the body’s waste materials. It sounds like your husband is on hemodialysis, where the blood is run through a machine that removes excess fluid and waste products, such as creatinine and potassium, which would otherwise increase in concentration in the blood. High potassium is life-threatening, and creatinine, though not dangerous, is the molecule we look at most commonly to estimate kidney function. Very rarely, kidney function can return even after a prolonged time on dialysis. I have never seen a case, but one study showed two cases per thousand where dialysis could be stopped. The clue that kidney function was returning was that urine output, which normally is scant while on hemodialysis, had increased over time. Unfortunately, 99.8 percent of the time, the kidney failure is permanent. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old male, and I have been heavy for most of my life. Over the past 18 months, I have lost a great deal of weight and feel better than I have in years. My issue is where the excess has ended up: just below my belt-line. I know that so-called spot reducing doesn’t work, so I’m at a loss as to how to go about getting rid of this paunch. It’s not above my belt, and it is stubborn. Any ideas? -- T.C. ANSWER: If you keep losing weight, odds are that stubborn fat will gradually go away. High-intensity aerobic exercise did seem to help in one study. I have had patients undergo liposuction, but that helps your appearance, not your overall health. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. I need a home H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your creative side is enhanced by indulging yourself in as much artistic inspiration (music, art, dance, etc.) as you can fit into your schedule. Bring someone special along. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take a little restorative time out of your busy life. Go somewhere quiet this weekend. Or just close the door, turn on the answering machine and pretend you’re away. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your advice might be much in demand by family and friends this week. But reserve time for yourself to investigate a project that could have some unexpected potential. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Workrelated issues demand your attention in the early part of the week. Family matters dominate Thursday and Friday. But the weekend is yours to spend as you please. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your temper in check as you deal with someone who seems to enjoy showing disrespect. Losing your Leonine cool might be just what the goader hopes to see. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A heated confrontation needs some cool-off time before it boils over. Better to step away than to try to win an argument where emotions overrule the facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone very special in your life finally sends that reassuring message you’ve been hoping for. You can now devote more time to the tasks you had put aside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Job pressures begin to ease by week’s end, leaving you time to relax and restore your energy levels before you face next week’s emerging challenges. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your spiritual strength helps calm a friend who might be facing an unsettling change in their life. An offer to help comes from a surprising source. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) By midweek you could learn some surprising facts about an associate that might cause you to reconsider a long-held view about someone in your past. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) One of those rare-for-you darker moods sets in in the early part of the week. But by Thursday, the clouds lift and you’re back doing nice things for people in need. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use that sharp Piscean perceptiveness to reel in more information about a promising offer so that you have the facts to back up whatever decision you make. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you prefer the status quo, you easily can adapt to change when it’s called for. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. Listen - People tend to forget at least half of what they hear in the doctor’s office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they’ve heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit. Taking notes - Companions can jot down important notes about the appointment, such as dates and times for follow-up visits, medication advice and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargon-heavy language of a physician
into an understandable language the patient can fully understand. Medical history - Sometimes a companion can be a useful resource, calling a doctor’s attention to a patient’s prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking. Serving as an advocate - Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn’t clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light. Translation - Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

LOAN OFFICER REVEALS SECRET TO A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP (NAPSI)—John and Jennie were renting a small house in Delray Beach, Florida when the perfect house came on the market: only four blocks from their rental home, 3,400 square feet, with five bedrooms and the biggest yard in the neighborhood. An excellent fit for their family of six. John has been a loan officer for 18 years and currently works for US Mortgage. He often advises his clients to consider a conventional mortgage with private mortgage insurance (PMI)—especially if they have a 5 to 10 percent down payment and good credit score. PMI is the private sector’s alternative to the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage insurance, a government program backed by taxpayers. “I explain how a conventional mortgage with PMI could be their fastest and least expensive route. Many borrowers often think that FHA is their only option,” John said. What John And Jennie Did He followed his own advice and purchased his new home with a 5 percent down payment and a conventional mortgage with PMI. It was the best way to go for his family—but not because they didn’t have enough saved up. Why They Did It “Jennie and I could have put the full 20 percent down on this house. But many years ago, when I was new at this job, I helped a car dealer purchase a home. He had $75,000 in a savings account, but he said we couldn’t consider that to qualify him. He explained that was his ‘sleep at night’ account because he always had six to eight months of expenses in the bank in case he had a bad sales month or two,” John said. In the process of opening his own US Mortgage branch, John wanted to make sure he had plenty of capital reserves. He put less money down and left the rest in the bank in his own “sleep at night” account. John said, “I have a big family and I don’t want to worry. I guess you could say that PMI helps me to regularly get a good night’s sleep.” Learn More: Are you ready to purchase a home with a low down payment? Or should you wait to save more? You can find out with the aid of the calculator at www.mgic.com/buynow. Another good resource for home buyers is www.readynest.com.
