COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Playing with food: Grilling does not require much intervention. Repeatedly flipping and squeezing meat and poultry can cause flavorful juices to leak out. Then you’re left with dried-out food. Resist any urges to prod and poke food. And minimize how many times you lift the grill cover to take a peek, as that can cause temperatures to fluctuate. Use a thermometer to determine when food is done. And don’t forget that meat will still cook a bit after it’s taken off the grill.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1976, I had a mole on my right calf about the size of a pencil eraser. A biopsy showed it to be melanoma, and they thought they had removed all of the cancer, but they did another surgery to be sure that I was cancer-free. I am a natural redhead and never sunbathed or used a tanning bed. It has been 38 years, and I am still cancer-free. I get a skin check from my dermatologist every six months. At the time of my diagnosis, my family doctor said that if the melanoma spreads inside the body, “the ball game is over.” Is that still true? I know melanoma can be deadly. -- W.K. ANSWER: Melanoma is the most commonly lethal skin cancer. Although there have been some exciting new developments in treating advanced melanoma, the survival rate for stage IV melanoma, where the cancer has spread to internal organs, is only 15 percent to 20 percent at five years. Fortunately, the survival rate for melanoma caught early, at stage I, is greater than 90 percent, which is why it’s so important to know the ABCDE’s of melanoma recognition: A: Asymmetry - one half looks different from the other half; B: Border - the border in a melanoma is often irregular, not a near-circle; C: Color - melanomas usually are not a uniform color, like most benign lesions. Some areas are light brown, others brown-black, others red or pale; D: Diameter - greater than 6 millimeters, the eraser on a standard pencil; E: Enlargement or Evolution - any change in color, shape, size or symptoms (including bleeding). Any of these should prompt a visit to your regular doctor or a dermatologist. As an internist, these are the features I look for, and I have a very low threshold for sending suspicious lesions to my colleagues in dermatology.

Local matters Small towns are where strong, lasting bonds are created. Where trust is earned. And where neighbors help neighbors...any time, in any way. At the Visiting Nursing Association of WNY, we are your neighbors. We have local branch offices and our employees live and work right here in this community – providing high quality, compassionate care to individuals leaving the hospital or referred from your local physician. We offer a full range of medical services to support recovery in the home: • Nursing • Home health aides • Physical, occupational, speech therapy • Dietitians • Medical social work So if you or a loved one needs care after a joint replacement, help managing heart failure or diabetes, or just need some assistance managing a medical condition, our highly skilled staff has earned the trust of their neighbors and patients. When your care provider recommends home care, insist on care from your neighbors at the VNA of WNY. Call us today at (607) 622-6155 or visit VNAwny.org

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. Surgery to relieve the nerve compression is successful in some cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. If you have trees that need to be removed, we highly recommend O'Neill's Tree & Landscape. We recently had several trees removed from our property and were very satisfied with the work they did. We also had our driveway replaced a few years ago by AG Paving. It looks as good as the day they finished the job. What a joy to work with such great professionals! Jerry & Carol

To the person who injured two people on a tandem bicycle with your light colored minivan while traveling on west [local road], June 20th at 7:10pm then drove away, turn yourself in. If anyone knows who may have done this please call the authorities and make this person be held accountable. Seems like an easy process to follow and yet we’ve observed multiple instances where our children (and their friends) have shared specific examples that validate these circumstances. Turn off the deck, give the kid a ride around the yard, and then put him (or her) off the tractor and away from the mower. Child safety is the business of everyone.

It’s a shame....that the "I Gotta Vent" section is twice the size of "Brighter Side." I am a woman. On Saturday morning, I went to an estate sale a few houses over from mine. Of course nothing was priced. (I find this irritating...apparently people want to sell but are too lazy to come up with a price). I asked the gentleman who was running the sale for a price on items downstairs. He rudely passed over me to assist a woman in a short dress with plenty of cleavage showing (remember, this is an estate sale, not a bar). When he could finally make time for me, I asked him for prices on an assortment of screws, nails, etc. He replied, "That's a boy thing." Really? In 2018? Women cannot buy hardware? Needless to say, I left immediately. I simply cannot fathom this man's behavior... it was rude, crude and disrespectful. This man needs to step out of his cave.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longtime situation starts to move into a new phase. The question for the uncertain Lamb right now is whether to move with it. Facts emerge by midmonth to help you decide. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A talent for organizing your priorities allows the Divine Bovine to enjoy a busy social life and not miss a beat in meeting all workplace and/or family commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What began as a dubious undertaking has now become one of your favorite projects. Your enthusiasm for it rallies support from other doubters-turnedbelievers. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Accept the help of friends to get you through an unexpectedly difficult situation. There’ll be time enough later to investigate how all this could have happened so fast. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Change is a major factor for the Big Cat through midmonth. Be prepared to deal with it on a number of levels, including travel plans and workplace situations. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not like all the changes that have begun to take place around you. But try to find something positive in at least some of them that you can put to good use. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s unsettling experience could create more problems if it’s not handled with care and love. And who’s the best one to offer all that? You, of course. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It might not be the right time for you to start a new venture. But it’s a good time to start gathering facts and figures so you’ll be set when the GO! sign lights up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sagacious Sagittarius should have no trouble deciding between those who can and those who cannot be trusted to carry out a workplace commitment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Surprise, surprise. It looks as if that one person you once thought you could never hope to win over to your side suddenly just might choose to join you. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might have to set aside your pride for now and accept a change that isn’t to your advantage. Cheer up. There’ll be time later to turn this around in your favor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your creative self emerges as dominant through midmonth. This should help you restart that writing or arts project you’ve left on the shelf for far too long. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of encouraging others by example to come out from the shadows and enjoy life to the fullest. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

What is a seborrheic keratosis? Thanks to education and awareness about skin cancer, more people are taking heed of skin growths and changes and visiting their dermatologists. A spot or mole on the body can be a cause for concern. A seborrheic keratosis is one such type of skin growth that is actually benign but may cause concern due to its appearance. Seborrheic keratoses, or SKs, are one of the most common noncancerous skin growths, says The Mayo Clinic. Although anyone can get them, they are more common in middle-aged to older adults. Also known as basal cell papilloma, senile warts or barnacles, these growths form as a common sign of skin aging, according to DermNet New Zealand. The American Academy of Dermatology says a seborrheic keratosis may seem worrisome because it can look like a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth or even skin cancer. However, despite their appearance, SKs are harmless. How do SKs form? Seborrheic means “greasy” and keratosis means “thickening of the skin.” Despite the name, SKs are not known to be caused by an abundance of sebum in the skin, nor are they limited to areas of increased oil production. The exact cause of SKs isn’t known, but some doctors feel that an overproduction of skin cells can cause a thickening of the skin in certain areas. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology offers that SKs are most likely hereditary, and they often are found on the trunk of the body and where the face meets the scalp. Sometimes seborrheic keratoses may erupt during pregnancy, following hormone replacement therapy or as a result of other medical problems.

Appearance of SKs Some of these growths have a warty, rough surface, while others look like dabs of warm, brown candle wax on the skin. ADA says they can range in color from white to black, but most are tan or brown. The appearance of SKs may change as one ages, and it is even possible for them to fall off naturally over time. The Mayo Clinic says that, unless changes include becoming sore or bleeding without healing, there’s little need to act. SKs may form singularly, but often they appear in groups. Cancer risk? SKs have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to one’s health. Unlike moles, they will not turn into melanoma. The superficial nature of SKs mean they can become irritated by clothing and grow. Treatment Unless a seborrheic keratosis is in an area that causes constant irritation, there is really no need to seek treatment. However, dermatologists can remove them quite easily if they are unsightly or uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic, cryosurgery or laser therapy is possible. Generally little scarring is produced, offers AOCD. Although SKs are harmless, their appearance may be similar to skin conditions that are not. Those who are unsure about changes to the skin should always seek the help of a licensed dermatologist.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

Overflowing with glade-like greenery, stone steps and tables and a “natural” pool created by damming part of the brook, Stony Brook State Park, a gem nestled along a wooded hill just outside of Dansville, is a popular destination for hikers and families alike. However, did you know that, not unlike an enclosed venue, Stony Brook State Park has a visitor capacity? On July 4th, 2018, capacity was reached, and visitors were turned away at the entrances. Once the number of visitors again fell below capacity, drivers were again granted park access. This can lead to frustration and disappointment for visitors who have driven some distance to enjoy all that Stony Brook has to offer. Similarly, the park pool, formed within the brook itself, can be closed for various reasons, and those visiting for the express purpose of taking a swim can sometimes find that the park is open, but the pool is not. There are, of course, simple ways to avoid the frustration and disappointment of being surprised by these events. It may surprise you to realize that finding information on park closings, reached capacity and pool closings is not as simple as checking online before heading out. Stony Brook State Park, like its fellow state parks, does not have its own website. Rather, it is a part of a website entitled, “Reserve America.” On Reserve America’s website, newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com, you can find the details and descriptions of each state park as well as make reservations to camp at state parks; however, the site does not provide up-to-theminute information.

Stony Brook State Park does have a Facebook page, and they do announce park closings, full capacity and pool closings within a reasonable time frame. facebook.com/StonyBrookStatePark/ Even so, the best way to check on both park capacity and pool status is to simply make a phone call to the park office: (585) 335-8111. ␣ ␣␣ Should you find that the pool is closed, even temporarily, you may wish to use that opportunity to explore the other activities that Stony Brook provides, such as taking advantage of the enjoyable playground area, replete with play structures, climbing structures, slides and swings. QR Squares offer additional information around the park. Activities Include: • Camping • Swimming • Snowmobiling • Hiking Trails • Picnicking Areas • Skiing Areas • Fishing • Playground • Baseball Area • Tennis Courts

VISUALLY IMPAIRED READER INSPIRES AUTHOR (NAPSI)—Four years ago, bestselling author Mary Jane Clark spoke at the Friends of the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped’s Fall Festival. There, she met Ottilie Lucas, a former rehabilitation teacher for people with macular degeneration and other disabilities who is visually impaired herself.

TRIVIA TEST

After the festival, “we continued our correspondence and one thing led to another,” Lucas says of Clark. “She decided to include a character in her next book with macular degeneration.”

By Fifi Rodriguez

And so was born Terri Donovan, introduced in the first book in Clark’s Wedding Cake Mysteries series, 2011’s “To Have and to Kill.”

“Mary Jane asked me to give her ways to identify symptoms that a person may be experiencing macular degeneration,” Lucas says. These include blurred vision and difficulty discerning the intensity of colors—symptoms shared by Terri Donovan, who runs a bakery and is the mother of the protagonist of Clark’s series, struggling actress Piper Donovan. Lucas, who was born with retinitis pigmentosa, became a patron of the New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC) in 1966. TBBC is among more than 100 libraries across the United States affiliated with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress. NLS oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. NLS patrons may choose from tens of thousands of books and dozens of magazines in audio and braille-including mysteries such as Mary Jane Clark’s. NLS also loans the portable playback equipment needed to read its audiobooks. Patrons may access books online through the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service. Lucas has been married 49 years and has been on more than 20 ocean cruises. “Ottilie is such an inspiration,” Clark says. “She helped me so much in the creation of Terri Donovan—a mother who faces macular degeneration head-on, who doesn’t feel sorry for herself and is determined to adapt to the challenges she faces. I wish I were as brave as Terri and Ottilie!” To learn more about how the NLS program can help you, a loved one or a friend, go online to www.loc.gov/nls or call 1-888-NLS-READ.

Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.
