Hi, my name is Skitz. I am a 14-month-old Ginger and Mommy and Daddy rescued my brother and me when we were babies in Florida. They call me Skitz because I run all over the house chasing my big brother. We moved here in August and I love eating snow. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Thank you! Thank you to all who have been there for me through my recent hip replacement surgery. How lucky we are to have Noyes Health serving our community! A great big thank you to the Noyes administration for all their hard work in creating the health care facility we now have. To Dr. Capecci, Bob Feinman and their staff, all the 3rd floor nurses, the surgical team, all my family and friends who were and are there for me, a great big thank you! What a great feeling, when someone asks me, where did you go for your surgery - Strong or General? Neither, I had it right here in Dansville at Noyes, a place we all are very fortunate to have! Thanks again everyone! Linda Shay

Ordinary riches can be stolen; real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you. ~Oscar Wilde, The Soul of Man under Socialism, 1891
Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be distracted by promises of good times, yet you ultimately reach the goals you set for yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice
--DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? -- Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack. Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. -- F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the most-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES
Youth sports injuries are common but preventable. Warming up, being in good physical shape and not overtaxing a growing body can help kids avoid pain and impairment.
6 Week Program Powerful Tools For Caregivers
Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Grime’s Glen Park Enchants Visitors with Creek Bed Hiking and Three Waterfalls Grimes Glen Park sits along a quiet corner of the lovely Village of Naples. The entrance road, branching off of Vine Street, is fairly inconspicuous, marked by a small sign at the end of Vine Street and a wooden sign at its parking area entrance. The parking area for Grime’s Glen is somewhat limited and fills up quickly. A men’s and a women’s restroom are open and available alongside this parking area. The Grimes Glen trail begins here, with picnic tables on either side and an informational shelter greeting visitors and describing the park and the area it encompasses. The picnic area leads to a muraled, cement bridge across rippling Grimes Creek. The bridge is decorated with images of fish in the water. Upstream from the bridge, the creek slows and pools, creating a shallow swimming spot within view of the picnic area. Trails lead upstream on either side of the creek bed; however, further upstream, the trails become much more challenging, switch from bank to bank and even wash out in places. Walking in the creek bed is often the best, and sometimes the only, option especially as you advance towards the first waterfall. As the creek is shallow, this does not present much of an issue; however, visitors must be vigilant to avoid the slippery, flat rocks that lie here and there beneath the water. The creek runs through the bottom of a gorge, and beautiful, high gorge walls rise from its banks on either side. The woods and foliage through which the creek flows are dense and glade-like. Along the way to the first waterfall, a picnic table stands along the trail, offering hikers a respite to enjoy looking across the creek. Birds, chipmunks and other wildlife can be viewed along the trail, and fish can, occasionally, be seen in the creek, as well, particularly further downstream. Roughly a half mile upstream, the first waterfall appears, created by a tributary entering the left bank of the stream. The waterfall plummets approximately sixty feet along the rocky gorge wall into Grimes Creek below, creating a white cascade along the craggy rock face. There are two waterfalls further upstream,

with the second one pooling at its base and creating a swimming space along the falls. Grimes Glen, apart from containing a delightful trio of waterfalls, also sourced New York’s oldest fossil tree. According to a New York State informational sign, Grimes Glen is the “home of the oldest fossil tree, found and mounted by D. Dana Luther, Naples, N. Y., now in the State Education Building, Albany, N. Y.” Today, Grimes Glen provides the uncommon opportunity to interact with a park’s natural features. From its creek bed to its waterfalls to its gorge trails, the space allows avid and casual hikers alike the opportunity to engage with nature at each visitor’s own level. A young person could walk up the creek bed, undeterred by its shallow, flowing waters, while an experienced hiker could scale the steep gorge wall trails for a more challenging experience. It is, therefore, little wonder that Grimes Glen Park is a local favorite.

Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a longstanding trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.
• Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty-nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.
HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

HELP TEENS LEARN DRIVING (NAPSI)—When it’s time for your teens to get their learner’s permits and driver’s licenses, here’s a hint on how you can help: Don’t teach them yourself. Leave that to the professionals. How Teens Can Learn This is made easier with an online driver’s test program. It uses accurate, up-to-date questions based on the official state DMV handbook and traffic laws. The questions are often identical to those on the official driver’s license test. As a result, aspiring drivers who take the practice tests and read the DMV manual are 73 percent more likely to pass the official test than those who study the manual alone. The program is called Driving-Tests.org and can be found at https://driving-tests.org. What You Can Do One good thing you can do as a parent is create a parent-driver contract. It helps form an open line of communication about the importance of safety and the expectations that come with the new and profound responsibility of driving. Among other things, the young driver promises to follow all traffic and safety rules, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs or ride with any driver who is, and avoid distracted driving such as texting or talking on the phone while driving. The parents promise to provide and maintain a safe vehicle, pay for driver training classes and materials, be available to ride along, pick the young person up or arrange a ride home whenever necessary regardless of the time or situation, and lead by example by exhibiting safe driving behavior. You can download the contract at https://driving-tests.org/parent-drivercontract.pdf.

Choosing Your Next Washing Machine: Front Loading vs Top Loading It’s a challenging decision, we know! Here are some factors to consider when selecting your next machine.
• Family Size: For larger families and those washing several loads of laundry a week, a front-loading washer

WELL-MAINTAINED 1989 HOLLY PARK MOBILE HOME SET UP IN PARK: 2 bedroom, 1 bath. New furnace and central air conditioning 2017, new skirting 2016, new roof 2008 and 2 outbuildings. Asking $25,000.
is the best fit. Those who frequently wash comforters and bedding may also prefer the front-loading washer as some manufacturers, such as Electrolux, make models that can fit an entire king-sized comforter.
• Fabrics: Are laundry items formal and business wear with delicate fabrics or children’s and other casual
clothing, with more durable fabrics? For more durable fabrics and a standard wash, machines offering fewer cycle types are a more cost-effective option. However, if your profession requires more delicate fabrics in addition to these durable ones, you may opt for a front-loader with several additional cycle options.
• Stains: Common stains are best addressed with a front-loader. In an Electrolux model, for example, steam
enters through the bottom, lifting out stains. If one’s profession is particularly hard on clothing, such as in construction and mechanic occupations in which greasy stains are common, a top-loading machine is a better choice. Top-loaders, like the Speed Queen models, provide a more aggressive wash. Auto-fill is newly available on top-load Speed Queen models, as well, which saves energy.
• Space: Front-loading sets have many sizing options such as side by side, stacked or with pedestals which
provide additional storage. Laundry centers are also an option. Smaller front loaders, such as the Electrolux 2 cu. ft. model, are available, as well. Top-loaders fit most standard spaces.
Tips for washer & dryer care
• Make certain you leave the door open between washes, (only if there is climbing in the machine); otherwise, the machine will form an odor.
no danger of small children
• Use a washing machine cleaner to cleanse your machine regularly. • Put your lint screen in hot, soapy water as dryer sheets often create a waxy film, or consider using dryer balls. • Avoid overuse of fabric softener or use white vinegar instead. It softens and sanitizes. • Be careful not to overload your washer. Leave a hand’s space between the top of your clothing and the top of your machine. • Clean the dryer vent (the hose that leads from your dryer to the wall) at least once a year. The lint buildup in the dryer vent prevents your machine from performing optimally and is a fire hazard.

Have you paid attention to the amazingly beautiful flowers down Main St. in Canandaigua? The garden carts in Bloomfield? Thank you to the workers/volunteers who have kept all the flowers watered and cared for this summer. You are appreciated! As a Chaplain volunteer in the Continuing Care at Thompson Hospital, I am truly blessed to visit the elderly in the Dementia/Alzheimer’s wing. It is SO important that the elderly people have visitations. Even if their minds are gone or going they still like and need to see family or friends, children, pets, a

Please take the time, take your children or grandchildren to visit the elderly and show them love and that someone cares. Talk to them about their professions, and their lives. There is a great “wealth” about the elderly and the lives they have lived. It will not only bless your day, it will bless their days. We would like to thank Seth Graham of Seth Graham Design at 3105 Main St., Caledonia, for creating such a beautiful Memorial video of

This intersection is bad enough without inconsiderate idiots like you making it worse!!!! Next time, continue your left turn and proceed to the street on the right, approx. two car lengths away and turn around in someone's driveway or in the driveway on the left which is the same distance. Remember, you are not the only person on the road AND LOOK before you turn!!! I returned home from work only to find my neighbor behind me on this dead end street had company. How did I

know? The cars parked partially on my lawn were a dead giveaway. I pulled up and asked the lady with the baby, can you not park on my lawn? Well now my neighbor claims they have to move, because they have neighbor problems. Problems like, the dog barking, putting your overflowing tote to the road on Friday for Tuesday pick up so it leaves a mess all over? Problems like not mowing by your tree out front that still has Christmas lights on it? Problems like the cat spraying the garage and taking a dump in the flower bed? Yes that is a neighbor problem. Do you need boxes for your move or a good Realtor? Let me know! I would love to help you out so I don't have a neighbor problem.
Thank you Crosby’s Gas & Mini Market -Caledonia! And thank you to the person who found my billfold insert and the employee who returned the insert to me by mail. It was appreciated very much!!!!
How can you be so shameful? For the past 3 weeks in our quiet town you have stolen things off of porches, have tried breaking into homes of elders and broke windows. In our yard, your picture is being taken and we have security alarms. What is wrong with people like you? We have reported this to all the authorities! You know who you are, so stop and get a job instead of depending on us! If you get caught, you may not like the outcome and you may get a new home!
