H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what follows. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan to take it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason why someone might have tried to hurt you. But at least you’ll have an insight into why it happened. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need to know before leaping onto center stage. Best to move carefully at this time so that you can observe what’s happening around you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to expand your outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your wise counsel continues to be needed as that family situation works itself out. Meanwhile, the decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your job situation brightens thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a personal relationship you might have neglected for too long. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects favor action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors why you’re the one they’re looking for. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your hard work pays off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Early feedback on your project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are. You are a shining example to others, helping them believe in themselves and what they can do. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Behaviors that may help you reduce your risk for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Colorectal cancer is similarly lethal in Canada, where the Canadian Cancer Society reports it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and the third leading among women. Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum or both significantly increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it. Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person’s risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer. • Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer. Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. • Embrace physical activity. While men and women who are physically active can still get colorectal cancer, the CCS notes
Phsyical activity may help men and women reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer. that people who live sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk of developing the disease than those who are active. • Maintain a healthy weight. According to the CCS, people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. • Limit alcohol consumption. The CDC notes that some studies have shown that limiting alcohol consumption may reduce a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is a devastating disease, but men and women who embrace healthy behaviors may be able to lower their risks.

AUGUST 2018 ”Welcome Julie” Please give a warm welcome to Julie Guzzardi, who joins our Library family. Julie is working as our Library Page and is ready to help you with your library needs. “Summer Reading Program—Libraries Rock!” There’s time to enjoy the last 2 events of Summer Reading Club! On Tuesday, August 7th, meet Riley, the mini therapy horse, from Jackson Creek Farms. The Betts’ family farm offers educational farm visits with lessons about the care of animals, agriculture, life cycles, community and storytelling to people of all ages. ␣Then on August 14, kids will enjoy the Summer Reading Club finale! Musician Geoff Clough presents his Spin Art craft for the children where they will soon be painting their own unique designs on vinyl long playing records while the disks are in motion! This special program is co-sponsored by Mill Creek Optical along with the Library. For more information, call the Library at 585-335-6720. “Metal Casting Magic” The Lion’s Discovery Workshops continue with Jeff Swift from Swift Custom Metal August 13-17, 2018 from 10:00 am 12:00 pm. For children ages 8-12, this workshop will teach participants the traditional process of sand molding and casting of aluminum. Children will learn about the history of making metal, metallurgy, and enjoy examples of art casting. They will also learn pattern making molding in sand and then experience the impressive and favorite part of metal casting: the actual “pour” of hot metal into the mold! Children will participate in heating the metal and with assistance they will help pour their very own molds right here, in the front yard of the

Magic Maze THINGS WE SPIN
--DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you prescribe vitamins or treatments to enhance the immune system? -- C.N. ANSWER: I do not. In my opinion, a healthy diet makes a deficiency of a vitamin or mineral severe enough to weaken the immune system unlikely. Stress reduction (through many techniques) and good sleep are more important than supplements. People think that a daily vitamin and mineral supplement is like an insurance policy against a good diet. However, many studies have shown that taking vitamins does not, in general, lead to improvements in prevention of disease, including heart disease, cancer or infections. So I would be much more likely to recommend a better diet (especially in the fresh fruits and vegetables) than I would a supplement. Many adults have not gotten all the vaccines that are recommended, and these are a huge benefit to your immune system for those specific bacteria and viruses. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old male in generally good health. I am maybe 10 pounds overweight. I have had no heart attacks or cardiac symptoms. I walk on the treadmill for exercise. I have controlled hypertension, and have been taking simvastatin, 10 mg. My LDL is 71, very favorable. My HDL is also good, at 73. Several years back, when I started the statin, my doctor added Zetia, 10 mg. At the time, I wondered why this would be OK, and he said, “Well, there is a certain synergy there.” While I have continued taking the Zetia and suppose it might be helpful, I wonder if I need it. I say this because it is rather expensive (about $500 a year with my part D coverage). It is the only thing I take that costs me this much. My reading of the literature suggests that while Zetia might help the LDL level, there is no evidence that it improves longevity (i.e. cardiovascular). -- J.P. ANSWER: This is a confusing subject, because the theory (that lowering cholesterol protects your heart) and the evidence (that it actually works) don’t exactly align. High cholesterol certainly is associated with a higher likelihood of heart blockages, which can lead to heart attack and death. However, not all treatments that lower cholesterol reduce risk of heart attack. On the one hand, there are treatments that lower cholesterol that do help your heart. The Mediterranean diet clearly reduces risk of heart attack. Dr. Dean Ornish’s plant-based diet of very little fat and little or no meat, in combination with stress reduction and smoking cessation, actually reverses blockages in arteries in some people. Statin drugs reduce cholesterol and help prevent heart attacks, at least in people at high risk for them. On the other hand, ezetimibe (Zetia) reduces cholesterol, but like most nonstatin drugs to treat high cholesterol, it has not been proven to reduce heart disease risk. It tends to have few side effects and probably is not harmful. But you are correct that it is expensive, and like all medications, it can possibly cause harm. Being conservative about medication, I very rarely prescribe it. Studies are ongoing, and I will readdress this topic when there is more evidence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

While passing through Dansville last Friday, we experienced alternator trouble with a 3-day old alternator! We're grateful to Van Hyning Automotive for replacing the alternator and communicating with the garage who originally replaced it. You rescued our weekend and family reunion. The people of Dansville are fortunate to have such capable mechanics! Thanks to our employers, Steve and Kim for the amazing lunch supplied by Tom Wahl’s Food Truck last week. It is always a summer event we all look forward too. GVPS is a great place to work with many
special perks! Thanks again Steve and Kim. Your GVPS family This past weekend my husband and I were out for a ride on our Harley. We never have a plan when we leave our house except to stop for lunch somewhere different. Some of our stops have been the Glenn Iris Inn in Letchworth Park and Bristol Harbor Golf Course. The views we have seen are amazing. I love to see all the different homes and the gardens and landscaping people take pride in. Letchworth is a beautiful park that has so much to offer. The hills and valleys around us are beautiful. We are
attempts. When you ghost a small rental business (that didn’t even require a deposit) it takes away from someone that actually wanted it. You own a clothing business and you wouldn't like it if someone did that to you! You're the reason rental businesses require deposits.
Next time you make a reservation for something (especially at a small business) have the decency to contact them and let them know you want to cancel. It is extremely rude to book something and then ignore confirmation
Have you ever returned something to the store? Ever wondered what happened to that item afterwards? So many assume it gets put right back on the shelf, but that actually rarely happens. State laws dictate that many (read: most) returned items be trashed. Socks and underwear? Garbage. Any food item? Trash. Any over-the-
so lucky to live in such a beautiful state. If you have the opportunity and time, take a drive outside of your neighborhood and see what you’re missing. I love summer in NY. Thank you to the folks who have local fruit/veggie stands, to share the benefits from their work growing all the fresh produce. Another benefit of small town living!!! Thanks to Coach Jackie for a wonderful U9 Summer Soccer season. The girls progressed beautifully and by the end of the season were a real team! It was a treat to see them come out of their shells, face fears, learn skills
counter meds and vitamins? Dumpster. Swim wear? Gone. The list goes on and on... So if you ever complain about retail waste, know that much of this is the customer's fault. Be sure of what you're buying. Don't purchase a clothing item in 3 sizes to try on at home and return what doesn't fit. That return will probably end up in a landfill with countless other items purchased and returned by thoughtless customers. Think first, and shop consciously. But FREEDOM DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO DO AS YOU PLEASE. It does however, give me the right to be inside my home and not have to
and develop a team bond. Thank you for all your hard work and patience. - Appreciative Parents To whoever planted the gorgeous sunflower field on the way out of Avon, thank you! It’s a bright spot we look forward to passing every day.
listen to bombs going off all around me. I have the right to go to sleep when I so choose, not when you decide to stop making noise that is so loud it’s heard inside of my home with the windows closed. Whether it's fireworks, loud music or whatever else you so thoughtlessly impose upon your neighbors, you are violating my right to have peace and quiet inside of my own home. Since you don’t care how your actions impact others, I won’t feel bad for calling the cops in order to protect MY RIGHT TO BE FREE FROM YOUR THOUGHTLESS AND ILLEGAL ACTIVITY. There are noise and firework laws.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Passw ord protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone ow ners passw ord-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the w rong hands, you could make it very eas y for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity. Review your social netw ork privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social netw ork sites. As the use of social netw orking continues to i ncrease, it’s expected that the use of malw are w ill rise, too. Cybercriminals are alw ays looking for w ays to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of w hat apps you insta ll, and never “ friend” someone you don’t know. Consider getting extra protection. There are a grow ing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as w ell as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, M obile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity M oni toring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.
Local Salon Owner Shares Why She Volunteers TRIVIA TEST By Fifi Rodriguez 1. FOOD & DRINK: What ingredient is added to sugar to make it brown sugar? 2. CURRENCY: Which historical figure featured on a $100 bill was NOT a president? 3. GEOGRAPHY: How many countries border Germany? 4. GAMES: Who invented the game of roulette? 5. ANIMAL KINGDOM: On which continent would you find a dingo, a wild dog? 6. FAMOUS QUOTATIONS: What American industrialist once said, “Formula for success: rise early, work hard, strike oil”? 7. HISTORY: Who was the last queen of France? 8. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: How long did the Pony Express deliver mail in the United States? 9. SCIENCE: What is the filament in an incandescent light bulb made of? 10. MOVIES: Which Disney movie features a character named Cruella de Vil?
Why do I volunteer?␣Some say it is to help your community. Some say it is to make a difference in the world and in the lives of others. Still others state it is a way to be a part of something bigger than yourself. For local salon owner and stylist, Stephanie Conroy, it is all these things and more. This past April, Stephanie participated in an event called, “Catwalk for Kidneys,” a fashion show fundraiser for kidney recipients and kidney donors put on by local boutiques and stylists. While several local owners and stylists were invited, for Stephanie, it was much more personal. The woman who created Catwalk for Kidneys—Julia Yaw—and who was running the entire event is one of her best friends. Yaw had serious health complications that ultimately resulted in her finding herself in need of a kidney transplant. She landed on the somewhat infamous “waiting list.” Against the odds, a donor came forward who matched her “better than blood.” Yaw received that kidney and began regaining her health. It was after this experience that Yaw started the Catwalk for Kidneys fashion show fundraiser. Stephanie says her friend wanted to highlight how important it is to be an organ donor as well as celebrate the kidney recipients and their stories. Stephanie, who had walked through these hard times with Yaw, naturally saw this as another way to support her good friend. For Stephanie, however, this event, which raises money specifically for hometown people, “like you and me,” was about more than helping a friend. It was about giving back to local communities. “Ever since I opened the shop, and I chose the name [Blessed Assurance], I have wanted to use my talents to bless the community,” says Stephanie, and “Catwalk for
Kidneys” definitely brought these “small town people” together. Stephanie confides that although she was nervous about participating in the large event at first, she found it to be very fun, and she is already looking forward to the 3rd␣Annual Catwalk for Kidneys next spring. She found it so satisfying to meet kidney recipients, all of whom had been through such a huge experience, and hear their stories while using her talents to make them feel as important and beautiful as they truly are. “It makes them feel like they matter, because they do; [it] lets them share their experiences, make a difference,” Stephanie adds. The event was a tremendous success, not only because it raised a significant amount of money, but also because it enriched the lives of both those that gave and those who received. Isn’t that what volunteering is all about? ␣ Want to get involved? Doors and more: Solid wood doors make great tops for tables and kitchen islands, old-fashioned screen doors hung from the ceiling can store pots and pans, and old windows make attractive wall hangings used “as is” or with additions, such as photos.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
