Thank you so much to the kind woman at our local pool store who gave me a reference for a pool contractor. We have a nearly new pool from a friend of the family; it was brand new & up for 1 year & taken down for family business needs. We were left in the dust with another contractor after we made arrangements, including the permit & contract, to install the pool at our home. Afterwards, we couldn't find anyone willing to drive out of Monroe County or who would be 'possibly' available by late July. I called your reference (Greg) on Friday, who came to our house to survey the site & pool equipment. He said everything was in perfect shape & that he would get us installed this week. Kindness is hard to find. Thank you again for approaching me at the pool store & helping our family.

Every day we entrust our children to “strangers” and expect them to return home safe each night. These adults have been hired by our school district. This means they have been thoroughly checked and are deemed as safe adults. When teachers, counselors, and bus drivers make decisions and rules to keep our children safe they should not be questioned. When

On June 8th, my husband and I were having lunch at the Dutch Hollow Restaurant in East Avon. The waitress had picked up our dirty plates and we thought she picked up our bill by mistake to. We asked about the bill only to be told that someone had paid for our meal. This was so unexpected but so appreciated. I have done this for others in the past, and now I know how they must have felt. We were grateful and blessed. Many thanks to whoever you are. I will again pay it forward! God Bless, Robin and Rick Dieffenbacher I would like to thank the hardworking women of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Geneseo

these trusted adults make decisions for the best interest of all the children in their care it may not always seem fair. I know we all think our children ‘can do no wrong’, but with age comes wisdom. We need to support our district staff. If problems arise while your child is learning and growing have the decency to communicate with the district staff. The adults in our community need to come together to help raise respectful children. To the lady with the wheelchair that fell out of the container – Yes I am the lady who disappointed you by being unhelpful and morally lacking. Letting you know I am a 79 year old lady who also has a handicap sticker and sees a foot doctor once a month for a foot and walking problem. I did what I

who maintain Lydia's Clothes Closet. They sort and put out tons of clothing donations and greet everyone who comes in like old friends. This ministry and the cheerful attitude they display bless many lives. I want these women to know how truly appreciated they are. Additionally, kudos to the gentleman (or men) who mow the church property....it is a huge commitment of time and resources and the property always looks very nice. Just a comment to a "Brighter Side" thank you note to many individuals, including Kevin and Nancy. Those 3 car seats are not supposed to be used anymore! Never compromise a child's safety! Do not use a car seat if you're not sure if it's safe.

could do physically and informed you of your missing wheelchair. Actually upon entering the store I looked for a young man to help you. None were available. Sorry that I was physically unable to be more helpful to you. As you can see it is not always the way it looks. Hoping this note makes you feel more positive about how people act towards you. Wishing you a great day!!

Anytime that you're in an accident the Integrity of the materials that make up the car seat have been compromised and should no longer be used! You simply add the car seats to the insurance claim and they will pay to replace them. I hope this message reaches many people that will in turn share with others.

DO NOT give little kids a ride on your lap while mowing lawn! One bump - and you'll never forgive yourself. Notice - this is the time of year when kids, pets & Senior Citizens should not be left in the car. Temperatures can rise alarmingly in a short time!

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

I love to play with my not so big brother Scofield the Maine Coon and my yellow Labradane brother Liam. My favorite thing to do is swim in the bathtub, until I don’t fit anymore. I’m going to be a big boy! I have lots of energy and love to play. But the best part of the day is snuggling up in bed with mommy, daddy and my brothers. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Case Against Hydrogen Peroxide --DEAR DR. ROACH: My dental hygienist recommends rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs after flossing. Lately I have heard the using too much hydrogen peroxide can be harmful. What are your thoughts? -- T.W. ANSWER: Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antiseptic that has some usefulness for household objects; however, I don’t recommend it as an oral rinse. It is too toxic to tissues. In a 1993 study, even hydrogen peroxide solutions diluted to half and quarter strengths caused damage to mucous membranes and caused “overwhelmingly negative subjective reactions.” Thus they were not recommended for oral care. A regular mouthwash is a much better choice, and your dentist can prescribe a medicated mouthwash if needed. Incidentally, I don’t recommend hydrogen peroxide for cleaning cuts and abrasions, either. It isn’t effective at inhibiting bacterial growth. I recommend careful cleaning with mild soap and water or saline and an antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a blood-borne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy by an ophthalmologist, whom I saw for an eye exam recently. Would you please tell me more about this disease? Is there any treatment? What can I expect in the future? It is getting harder to read and do close work. -- N.O. ANSWER: Fuchs’ dystrophy is a condition of older eyes, which happens when the cells in the innermost lining of the cornea (the translucent, colorless front part of the eye) degenerate, causing, initially, deposits in the cornea and later swelling of the cornea. The disease has a complex genetic pattern of inheritance, and tends to progress slowly. Treatments include soft contact lenses to “bandage” the cornea, and eyedrops. Transplant surgery of the affected lining of the cornea (called Descemet’s membrane), or the whole cornea, is the definitive treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. EVERYONE WITH ALS COUNTS (NAPSI)-Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells. It first gained national attention as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with ALS in 1939. To date, the cause of ALS is unknown, and there is still no known cure. The disease strikes quickly, usually leading to death within two to five years of diagnosis. But every person with ALS has an individual story, and understanding these stories will help researchers ultimately piece together clues about this disease. Ed Tessaro was diagnosed with ALS in 2009. As he learned to cope with this diagnosis, he reflects, “I’ve never considered myself a victim of the disease because I believe in my heart all of us have a wheelchair. In my case, it’s quite literal, but with everything that goes on in my life, I realize that every family has had a crisis.” One of the things that helps him and others with ALS is reaching out for community support and resources. “The ongoing struggle is to encourage newly diagnosed people to come in and talk about their condition. I want to help people learn about the National ALS Registry, clinical trials, and other resources that can provide support and hope.” The National ALS Registry helps gather information from those who are living with this disease. Researchers from all around the world can access the Registry data to help scientists learn more about what causes this disease. Everyone’s story is different, and everyone’s piece of the puzzle is essential. The Registry has found that almost 16,000 persons with ALS live in the United States, as of 2014. It is important to include as many people as possible living with the disease to get the most accurate information. When patients join, it helps give researchers more information. This could lead to a better understanding of the causes of ALS, because learning more about the disease is one step further in the battle to defeat it. Concludes Ed, “It’s tough, but maybe we can fling open a door or two in the next couple of years of research. I’m happy just to stall this thing and get all of us to another chapter in our lives.” If you or someone you care about has ALS, please consider learning more about the National ALS Registry by visiting www.cdc.gov/ALS.

Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Danielle Nahas as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout by Susan Cook Girl Scouts of Western New York are proud to announce Danielle Nahas of Spencerport, NY, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Nahas’ project, Helping Youth Meet Their Potential, involved creating a book for independent living targeted at young adults in at-risk situations. Nahas partnered with the Center for Youth in Rochester, which offers help and support for teens and youth who are considered to be at risk, such as those who have run away from home or have an unstable family. Knowing the youths would struggle to find an adult to support them as they transitioned to independent living, Nahas hoped her book would provide tips and serve as a guide to get them started. The book’s content included easy cooking recipes (with many accessible items at the Center for Youth’s cabinet), laundry tips, first aid information, and other useful advice.

Nahas stated, “I can empathize with this age group about how hard it is to start transferring into adulthood. However, I do have a good support system in my life and at home so I can only imagine how much harder it would be for those who do not have this to start a new part of their life.” Nahas also commented, “Girl Scouts has made me gain a greater appreciation for volunteering and making an impact on other people’s lives. I have continued these values into college where I am a part of a service organization that requires 15 hours of service a semester. I enjoyed this so much that I am now a part of the philanthropy committee. I hope that I can always help others in college and even into my career.”

Signs of atrial fibrillation — and how to treat it Palpitations of the heart or uncomfortable sensations in the chest can be distressing. Thoughts of heart attack may come to mind, and that anxiety can only exacerbate the situation. While heart attack might be the first thing people think of when experiencing chest discomfort, atrial fibrillation may be to blame for such feelings. Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that may lead to heart-related complications. The American Heart Association says that at least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFib. Although treatable, without proper diagnosis, AFib may lead to blood clots, stroke and even heart failure. Many people with AFib experience no symptoms at all and are unaware they have it until it is discovered during a physical examination. For those who experience symptoms, The Mayo Clinic lists these as some of the more common: • Palpitations, which can be sensations of a flip-flopping in the chest or even a racing feeling. • Fatigue • Reduced ability to exercise • Lightheadedness • Chest pain or shortness of breath • Dizziness and weakness

ECG, which will show the heart’s electrical activity as line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the tracings are called waves. An EKG will determine if the heart is pumping correctly. AFib is more common among people with clogged arteries or diabetes and may develop following valve surgery. AFib also is more common in people with coronary heart disease. As a person ages, his or her risk for AFib increases. Stress also can be a major factor in triggering AFib, according to StopAfib.org.

Once AFib is diagnosed, managing risk factors and restoring When the heart is working normally, it contracts and relaxes in a heart to normal rhythm becomes the priority. HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

THIS SPRING, IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS FISHING -AND YOUR BASIC GEAR COVER YOUR HEAD. Hats w ith a hard-hat liner w ill keep your neck, ears and head w arm in c old w eather. For w armer climates, a w ide-brimmed hat w ill guard against sunburn, overheating and overexposure. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Count to 10 if you must, but don’t lose your temper, despite that person’s (you know who!) efforts to goad you into reacting. Your restraint will pay off in a big way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week finds you in a sociable mood, ready and eager to enjoy the company of family and friends. It’s also a good time to seek out and renew old friendships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Patience is called for as you await a decision about that project you’re eager to launch. Meanwhile, try to set aside more time to share with that special person in your life. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid becoming involved in a workplace dispute early in the week by insisting both sides submit their stands to a neutral arbitrator. Things begin to cool off by Thursday. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It promises to be a busy but productive week for the Big Cat. The pace slows by Friday, allowing you to catch up on matters you put aside but that now need your attention. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suddenly disruptive family situation is best handled with a cool, calm and collected response. Wait until things settle to let off all that pent-up emotional steam. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your practical side dominates the week as you reassess your finances to make some sensible adjustments in what you plan to spend and what you expect to save. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected meeting with a former colleague opens some interesting possibilities. But you need to press for full disclosure before making a decision. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent flurry of activity eases by midweek, giving you time to readjust your disrupted schedule and make new plans for a weekend getaway. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re usually the one who gives advice. But now it’s time to open yourself up to counsel from friends who have your best interests at heart. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might find resistance to your call for a full inquiry into a workplace problem. But by week’s end even the most rigid naysayers begin to come around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recurring problem surfaces once again. Maybe it’s time you used your creative talents to help you find a new approach to resolving it once and for all. BORN THIS WEEK: You are guided in what you do both by your intelligence and your emotions. An acting career would suit you quite well. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Construction Laborer

Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
