CROSSWORD
Cleason Jay Leasure December 31, 2017 Rochester/Conway, SC: Passed away on December 31, 2017, at age 84, near his home in Conway, SC surrounded by family members and friends. Predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Jean (Pesce) Leasure and granddaughter Jennifer Leasure. Survived by children; Cleason Jay (Eva) Leasure III, Richard (Jeanne) Leasure, Luellen (Stan Crane) Leasure, and Jeanne (Steve Levin) Leasure; grandchildren, Ryan (Nikki) Graham, Cleason Jay (Kathryn Yeager) Leasure IV, Jason (Margarita) Graham, Maggie (Andy Webster) Leasure, Jack (Kelly) Leasure, Kasey Leasure, Ben Leasure, Samantha Leasure, Anna Leasure, Benjamin Leatherwood, Madeline Levin, and Ava Levin; great grandchildren, Dorothy Leasure, Isabella Graham, Ernie Leasure, Maeda Leasure, Oscar Leasure, Arlo Leasure, Ciaran Graham, Mary Jane Leasure, Bridget Leasure, Evelyn Graham, and Beauden Leasure; siblings, Marylou Leasure Judy and Nancy Leasure Bauer. Jay spent over 60 years in the restaurant business getting his start washing dishes at the age of 10 in his father’s restaurant in Meadville, PA. He was on his own supporting himself at the young age of 13, going to school during the day and working in restaurants after school. He later met his wife Jean at the Country Club Diner on East Avenue in Rochester in the early 1950’s; Jay a cook, and Jean a waitress. They fell in love, married and began their career together owning and operating four Rochester area restaurants including the Brookview Diner on West Henrietta Road, which they opened in 1960, and then opening Jay’s Diner on West Henrietta Road in 1966, today still a popular hangout for University of Rochester students. In 1989, Jay and Jean opened J.J. Leasure’s restaurant, motel and banquet facility in Lakeville and then later purchased George E. France (“George’s”) Restaurant in Lima in 1994 from their good friend George France. France wanted the Leasures to take over the business when he retired knowing that in their care, George’s would continue to thrive in the local community which it has served for decades. Throughout his career in the restaurant business, he took on leadership roles in the New York State Restaurant Association serving as Vice President and President for the Rochester chapter during the 1970’s, and awarded the NYSRA Silver Spoon award in 2001, an award for successful restauranteurs who were not born with a silver spoon, but who earned the admiration and respect of his or her peers through hard work and dedication to the industry and community. From humble beginnings, himself, he frequently offered a helping hand to those in need, hiring several employees from a local alcohol recovery unit to help them get back on their feet. He was also known to donate equipment, food and time to numerous church and community events, and sponsored countless school and recreational sports teams over the years. He was even known to help underprivileged kids with expenses related to their school sports, and perfect strangers in need. Jay was also a Rotary Club member for several years, and served his country in the Army Reserves as a mess hall cook, and Sergeant, honorably discharged in 1960. Jay finally retired in 2005, but his passion for the business continued in to retirement as he mentored young restaurant owners, and was still talking about how to be successful in the restaurant business just weeks before his passing. He worked very hard throughout his life adopting the saying that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. In all, Jay was a successful restauranteur, an avid sports fan, loved classic cars and was known for his sense of humor, generosity, humility and great spirit. His was a life well lived and worthy of admiration. Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 15th, 5-7 pm at Merton H Kays Funeral Home, 59 Monroe Street, Honeoye Falls. Funeral mass to be held on Tuesday, January 16th at St. Louis Church, 64 South Main Street, Pittsford, NY. A private burial will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Geneseo, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross., 50 Prince Street, Rochester, NY 14607. Safety renovations for seniors’ homes Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women. Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger. As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery times. The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are admitted to the emergency room for injuries every year. People concerned about the safety of their homes or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer. Falls According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year. In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and high-traffic areas can help seniors stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping. Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motion-activated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary. A nightlight or LED lights placed near molding can help guide seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits. Physical limitations Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools. Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots. Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals. Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible. Smart Homes Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones. Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.

WOOD STAINING TIPS
REMODELING
Designed and Builtby U s.
Enjoyed By You.
Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Autumn Jeffery as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout Go Figure!
By Susan Cook
Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Autumn Jeffery of Caledonia, NY as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Jeffery’s project was to build two Little Free Libraries to support the community, which has insufficient access to a public library. Caledonia Library has limited hours and the nearby town of York does not have a public library at all. Jeffery researched the project and collected donations of building materials and books, as well as met with local businesses to find a location to put Little Free Library locations. Jeffery sorted the donated books, built and assembled the libraries herself, installing one at the Cal-Mum Elementary School and the other at the York Elementary School where she gave a speech about citizenship. Jeffery stated, “I am proud to be a Gold Award Girl Scout. But to me, the real reward in all of this is that I have made a positive impact in my community and I have helped others.” Jeffery has been a Girl Scout for 13 years. She will receive her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, at the Gold Award Ceremony in June. The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a girl can be passionate about – in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be ongoing or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind

each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing. To learn more about the Girl Scouts of Western New York please visit gswny.org.

To the students and parents of Attica bus 111, Thank you for the cards and gifts for Christmas. The homemade chocolate covered pretzels are very good. Thank you. Mr. Jeff Thank you so much to the Livonia Fire Department for pumping out my flooded cellar and to the Volunteer Ambulance crew who took my 18 month old grandson to the hospital when he had a serious case of croup. You saved his life. We in Livonia are so fortunate to have such great people who serve in our community, especially the firefighters and ambulance crews. Keep up the good work and a big THANK YOU! To the older "gentleman" whom we were unfortunate enough to sit by at our favorite restaurant. Not everyone appreciates hearing how you "severed the aorta" of a deer you shot from your tree stand. My wife and I had to sit there and listen as you described what was evidently a thrilling experience for you, all the while eating our vegetarian lunch that is usually a highlight of our week. I would expect this behavior from a twenties-something guy in [a fast food restaurant]--not a senior citizen in a sit-down establishment, where I assure you
that no one wants to hear about you bagging a trophy buck. Since you were the only one talking at your table, I can only assume that even your family was annoyed. Have a little class, hit the fast food joint, or better yet, stay home and eat by yourself. It is absolutely incredulous that if someone were to be caught by a police officer throwing a candy wrapper out the car window that they would be subject to a $350 fine in New York State, yet people in a supposedly upscale neighborhood in this town routinely place loose trash and recyclables out in 30 MPH winds to turn their neighborhood into a ‘royal’ mess. Is there no town ordinance that can address this issue?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Non-Stop Music Only He Can Hear --DEAR DR. ROACH: I hear music playing in my head at all times. I can’t stop it, even if I’m reading, having a conversation or being active. It’s there when I wake up in the night or in the morning. Even if I consciously stop it and try to hear only the ambient sounds around me, the music always comes back. Is this indicative of any major problems? I am a very healthy 64year-old male, and this is annoying. It has been going on for most of my life. I wonder if a psychiatrist could help. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head. One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessivecompulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders. However, my experience is that there are many, many normal people with no psychiatric illness who have music playing in their head almost all the time or all the time. Many people have had a song stuck in their head (often called an “earworm”), but a few people have this continuously. I had one patient in whom this was a major source of distress, and in that case, it appeared to be related to the use of an antidepressant. Solving anagrams and reading are supposed to help, but in your case I am almost sure that would be temporary. Sometimes playing the music that is in your head can stop it. There are a few case reports of treatment with medication (such as carbamazepine) being effective, but sometimes reassurance that this is almost normal makes it easier to deal with. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? -- K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of. In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous. You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed. Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question. Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent. Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.
