BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer. SPORTS QUIZ By Chris Richcreek 1. Five pitchers have tossed a nohitter in both the American League and the National League. Name three of them. 2. Dave McNally won 20-plus games for four consecutive years for Baltimore (1968-71). In how many of those years did at least one teammate also win 20 or more games? 3. When was the last time before 2016 that Penn State’s football team won an outright Big Ten championship? 4. In 2017, Chris Paul became the third-fastest NBA player (806 games) to reach 15,000 points and 8,000 assists for a career. Who was faster? 5. When was the last time the Carolina Hurricanes made the NHL playoffs? 6. In 2017, Christian Pulisic became the youngest winner (19) of the U.S. Soccer Federation’s Male Player of the Year award. Who had been the youngest? 7. When Manny Pacquiao became the first boxer to win world titles in eight weight divisions, how many of them were considered lineal titles?

Protecting Honeybees Stagger your planting throughout the growing season. Rather than planting everything at once, stagger planting for flowers and other plants that have blooms. This gives bees plenty of pollen sources throughout early summer and into fall. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your zeal for challenges usually works well for you. But this week it’s best to avoid jumping into new situations without more information. Vital news emerges by the weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s patience pays off as that pesky problem works itself out without taking too much of your valuable time. A new task opens interesting possibilities. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those suggestions you want to share need to be set aside for a while so you can focus on the job at hand. There’ll be time later to put your ideas into a workable format. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be sure about your sources before you use the information in any decision you reach about your new project. Some of the data might be out of date or misinterpreted. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A sudden challenge might rattle you at first. But pump up that strong Lion’s heart with a full measure of courage, and face it with the continuing support of family and friends. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Watch your expenses this week so you can have a financial cushion to fall back on should things tighten up later this month. Money matters ease by the 1st. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Uncertainty over workplace policy creates anxiety and confusion among your colleagues. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked, once again, to help work things out. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The workweek keeps you busy tying up loose ends and checking data that needs to be verified. The weekend offers a chance to relax and restore your spent energies. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is not the best time to go to extremes to prove a point. Better to set a sensible goal now and move forward. There’ll be time later to take the bolder course. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A step-by-step progression is the better way to move ahead. Taking shortcuts could be risky at this time. Important news arrives on the 1st. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Avoid getting drawn into workplace disputes that should be handled by those directly involved. Instead, spend your energy developing those new ideas. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You still need to be prudent about money matters. But things start to ease by the end of the week. A weekend encounter with an old friend brings welcome news. BORN THIS WEEK: You handle challenging situations with boldness when necessary and caution when called for. Keep private conversations private. When the phone rings while you are in public and you don’t want to allow the call to go to voicemail, answer the call and immediately and politely explain that you are in public. This indicates to the person on the other end of the line that you do not want to broadcast potentially sensitive information to strangers, while also showing those around you that you respect them enough to reserve such conservations for private settings.

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

Take Steps to Reduce Conflicts Between Bears and People The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Black bears have been keeping DEC Wildlife staff busy, with numerous human-bear conflicts already this summer. Bears are often attracted to bird feeders, improperly stored garbage, messy grills, and pet food that is left outdoors. When people allow bears to have access to human-related foods, it encourages bear behavior that put people, property and bears at risk. Reducing human-bear conflicts requires changing human behavior. When we reduce attractants for bears, we protect people and property, and we do what’s best for bears too. To Reduce Human-Bear Conflicts: • Take down bird feeders after April 1st. • Store garbage in a bear-resistant garbage can or keep inside until the morning of pick up. • Clean up grease from grills after use. • Feed pets indoors. • Owners of backyard chicken flocks in bear country should also take steps to secure their flock and feed. If You Encounter a Bear: Never Approach, Surround, or Corner a Bear - bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective. Never Run From a Bear - stay calm, speak in a loud and calm voice,␣slowly back away␣and leave the area. Use Noise to Scare Away Bears From Your Campsite yell, clap, or bang pots immediately upon sighting a bear near your campsite. Do Not Throw Your Backpack or Food Bag at an Approaching Bear. • Doing so will only encourage bears to approach and “bully” people to get food. • By teaching a bear to approach humans for food, you are endangering yourself, other campers/ residents, and the bears. In Your Yard: • From a safe distance, make loud noises by shouting or banging pots to scare the bear away. • Once the bear leaves, remove all attractants such as bird seed, garbage, and pet food.
• Ask neighbors to remove attractants. In a Building: • Give the bear a clear escape route. • Leave any doors open as you back away from the bear. • Do not lock the bear in a room. If a Bear Becomes Aggressive and Approaches You: • Raise your arms and speak in a loud, calm voice while backing away. Charges You: • Stand your ground. • If you have bear spray, dispense directly at the bear. Please follow the link leaving the DEC’s website to learn about the proper use of bear spray. Follows You: • Stay together. • Do not run, but continue to back away while speaking loudly. If the Bear Continues to Follow You: • Stand your ground. • Intimidate by making yourself look bigger by waving arms, clapping, shouting, banging sticks. • Prepare to fight or use bear spray. If the Bear Makes Contact With You: • Fight back with anything at hand (knife, stick, rocks, fists). Visit DEC’s website to learn more about how to reduce human-bear conflicts.

Apple Butter Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp Servings: 10 cup Apple Butter cup maple syrup teaspoon red pepper flakes teaspoon salt teaspoon smoked paprika pieces bacon extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. When is clumsiness a cause for concern? Who hasn’t tripped over his own feet or knocked over a water glass on a table? No one is immune to the occasional clumsiness, but some people may grow concerned that their bouts of clumsiness are becoming more frequent. For healthy people, bumping into a wall when misjudging a corner or dropping silverware on the floor is often a minor, isolated incident. Lack of concentration or multitasking often may be to blame. In 2007, Professor Charles Swanik and a research team at the University of Delaware studied athletes to discover why some seem to be more injury prone than others. Researchers found that clumsy athletes’ brains seemed to have “slowed processing speed,” which referred to how their brains understand new information and respond to it. But clumsiness also can be a sign of a bigger issue at play, namely motor problems within the brain. According to Taylor Harrison, MD, clinical instructor in the neuromuscular division of Emory University, coordination of the body is complicated and tied to both motor and sensory systems. That means the eyes, brain, nerves,
cerebellum, which specializes in coordination and balance, muscles, and bones must work together. Clumsiness can result from stroke, seizure disorders, brain trauma or the presence of tumors, and other conditions. Healthline also says that clumsiness may be an early symptom of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s affects the central nervous system and can impair motor skills. Alzheimer’s slowly damages and kills brain cells and may cause issues with coordination. This may be the case with other dementias as well. Clumsiness may sometimes result from a lack of sleep or overconsumption of alcohol. Arthritis also can lead to clumsiness when joint pain and restrictive movements make it challenging to get around. Psychologists may suggest cognitive behavioral therapy or propose performing tasks with more mindfulness to reduce clumsiness. If that doesn’t work, men and women should visit their physicians, who can conduct tests to rule out certain things and provide peace of mind.

Beware of Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by the bite of an infected deer tick. Ticks can be hard to see, as they may only be about the size of a pin-head. Since Lyme disease first became reportable in 1986, over 95,000 cases have been confirmed in New York State. Cases peak in the summer months. Lyme disease is very serious and can become crippling or debilitating if not properly diagnosed and treated with antibiotics. Serious risks from Lyme disease can be reduced if the tick is removed within 36 hours. Anyone who plays or works outside is at an increased risk. Ticks most commonly live in cool, moist environments, and can be found in tall grassy areas, garden areas, around shrubs and in wooded areas. The public can be at risk while mowing lawns, picking up leaves, or other outdoor activities. Deer, birds, mice, and other animals can transport ticks into your yard. There are several things you can do to protect yourself and your family from tick bites. Below are some basic tips to follow: • Keep your lawn mowed and cut down brushy areas. • Avoid areas that may be infested such as, tall, grassy, moist areas. • Use protective measures. If you know you will be walking in tall grass wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks and shirt into your pants. Also, try to wear light color clothing so that ticks are more visible. Wear light colored gloves & a hat to protect your head. • Apply insect repellents that contain DEET or Permethrin to clothes and exposed skin according to the manufacturer’s directions. A single springtime application of an acaracide (tick pesticide) in your yard, such as bifenthin, can greatly reduce the number of ticks. • Perform a tick check on yourself, your pets and your children when finished with outside work or play. • If a tick is found, do not apply mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or heat. Use fine-tipped tweezers to remove the tick. Contact your doctor if there are concerns about incomplete tick removal or if a rash or flu-like symptoms develop. By following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself and your family from Lyme disease. For any other questions, or concerns please contact the Livingston County Department of Health at 243-7280 or visit their website at www.livingstoncounty.us/doh.htm.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Hearing Loss Indeed Possible After Surgery --DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had a hip replacement. I am 84, with hearing loss. My family says my hearing is worse after the operation. My daughter talked with several seniors who experienced the same thing. They think it has to do with the anesthesia. Fact or fiction? -- D.W. ANSWER: Possibly fact. Hearing loss is a known and rare occurrence after surgery, and there are several ways in which it can happen. You mentioned anesthesia: Several anesthetic agents, especially nitrous oxide, can cause temporary hearing loss, but nitrous oxide is not used as often during surgery as it once was. Changes in the fluid pressure in the ear also can cause both temporary and permanent hearing loss. Finally, antibiotics given around the time of an operation can cause hearing loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently attended a free introductory visit at my local health spa. It’s an interesting process. There is a circuit with 12 machines and 12 mats for doing cardio. Each exercise is done for 30 seconds, then you move to the next station. The circuit is supposed to be done twice at each session, three times per week. Can this really work to help you lose weight and get fit? Need I say again, 30 seconds ... really? Your opinion please. -- E.Y.M. ANSWER: There are two questions, and the first is on fitness. There, the answer is a resounding yes. High-intensity interval training has been clearly proven to improve muscle and cardiovascular fitness. If you were to follow the program at the gym, working hard but not overdoing it, you certainly would find that your ability to do the exercises would improve, your stamina would increase, and you’d likely feel better and have more energy. A 24-minute workout (24 stations of 30 seconds each, done twice) is enough (and a LOT better than no workout at all). Unfortunately, just doing the exercise will not make you lose much weight. Losing weight comes from better dietary habits, which can help you eat less food and still feel satisfied. The combination of increased exercise and a little less food, especially less low-quality (“junk”) food, may help you lose a few pounds. Losing weight shouldn’t be the goal, in my opinion. Losing weight and keeping it off is tough to do, but by exercising regularly and eating well, you can dramatically improve overall health and well-being even without weight loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an itchy-ear problem. It even wakes me up at night. I’ve tried Cortizone-10, hydrogen peroxide solution, ear baths and cotton swabs. Nothing seems to work for long. Can you help me? -- G.P. ANSWER: Stop the hydrogen peroxide -- it is very drying and can damage the sensitive skin in the ear. The hydrocortisone should work for many common conditions, but if it hasn’t, then your regular doctor, a dermatologist or ENT doctor should take a look in your ear and see what is going on. Seborrheic dermatitis and eczema are common conditions that can affect the skin in the ear. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Thank you to the entire staff of the Livonia Public Library! Every time I go there, the staff is friendly and helpful. I cannot tell you how much that means to me as a patron. The library has such a warm, inviting atmosphere and it’s because of its terrific staff. I hope the Director realizes what an asset you are and treats you well. Thanks for all you do!!! JMH
To the misogynist attention seeker who thinks that a woman should take on her husband’s last name when they get married. Why is it any of your business what other couples do? It is their own decision, and for whatever reason, the woman decided to keep or hyphenate her last name. We no longer live in the 19th century where women were property and obligated to take on her husband’s name to show that he owns her. Women are free to do what they want to do, and I am sure they discussed it with
A nice couple ahead of me in line at the grocery store paid for my groceries. We should all be so kind and pay it forward. I want to thank the Livonia Ambulance crew for coming to my rescue June 18th at 5:30 in the morning when I dislocated my hip. Both of you were absolutely wonderful. You made my traumatic experience bearable. You both were so kind and caring. Thank you so much!
their partner as to what their married name will be. I suggest you keep your childish and outdated opinions to yourself and stop butting into business that does not affect you in the least bit. We have spoken to our village neighbor about feeding the deer and squirrels. They have finally stopped feeding deer once I explained it was actually illegal, but they continue to spread peanuts all over their deck. It has now caused a huge problem; the deer and squirrels now destroy our perennial gardens that we have worked so hard for and spent so much time and money on. We have asked nicely to refrain from doing so but we are ignored. We had no trouble with wildlife until they moved in. The squirrels now make a mess of our deck and yard. The deer eat all our plants. Our gardens were started long before they moved in. We are trying to add beauty to our home and the village. We are respectful of our neighbors but we do not receive the same respect.
On July 3rd at a local store in Livonia I had an angel come to my aid when I had a small problem with a sandwich tray opening up on me. (Oh and by the way it was a good sandwich tra, a lot of food for a reasonable price); anyway this lady helped me not only get the tray fixed but carried it to my car. I didn't get your name but your act of kindness made my day. I thank God for his special angels he sends us. God bless you.
In my area there are several people flying the Confederate flag. Researching the Secessionist papers of the states that seceded from the Union all include a statement that one of the reasons for secession was the potential denial of slave ownership in the United States as well as the justification of their position on the matter. The states would no longer have the right to own other human beings. This is the heritage that those who identify with the Confederacy are so proud of. Despite what one wants to believe the Secessionist papers speak for themselves. Find them online and read them in their entirety. The Confederate flag represents the states that fought for the right to own slaves. That is the bottom line and that is what you are supporting. Not a heritage but a horror. Around the anniversary of my husband's passing, I placed a lovely lavender, purple and white hanging basket at his gravesite. Several days later somebody stole
that hanging basket! How cruel can someone be? May that thief live with their conscience. I am disheartened and ashamed of the representation of our town Little League by the coaches and the core values, or lack thereof, they showed in the way they chose players for the All-Star team. I'm not saying this because my child wasn't picked, if you're good you're good, if you're not you're not, but that wasn't the case here. Kids who play well but have appalling sportsmanship (ie. screaming at the coaches, slamming their equipment, not shaking other player’s hands) were chosen over kids who play well AND have great attitudes, kids who are true AllStars. FYI, they're not fooling anyone, everyone knows the system is rigged through jealous fathers living vicariously through their sons, serving themselves, not the players. Looking forward to the years when they're in the stands!
