Your What is a seborrheic keratosis? Thanks to education and awareness about skin cancer, more people are taking heed of skin growths and changes and visiting their dermatologists. A spot or mole on the body can be a cause for concern. A seborrheic keratosis is one such type of skin growth that is actually benign but may cause concern due to its appearance. Seborrheic keratoses, or SKs, are one of the most common noncancerous skin growths, says The Mayo Clinic. Although anyone can get them, they are more common in middle-aged to older adults. Also known as basal cell papilloma, senile warts or barnacles, these growths form as a common sign of skin aging, according to DermNet New Zealand. The American Academy of Dermatology says a seborrheic keratosis may seem worrisome because it can look like a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth or even skin cancer. However, despite their appearance, SKs are harmless. How do SKs form? Seborrheic means “greasy” and keratosis means “thickening of the skin.” Despite the name, SKs are not known to be caused by an abundance of sebum in the skin, nor are they limited to areas of increased oil production. The exact cause of SKs isn’t known, but some doctors feel that an overproduction of skin cells can cause a thickening of the skin in certain areas. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology offers that SKs are most likely hereditary, and they often are found on the trunk of the body and where the face meets the scalp. Sometimes seborrheic keratoses may erupt during pregnancy, following hormone replacement therapy or as a result of other medical problems.

Cancer risk? SKs have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to one’s health. Unlike moles, they will not turn into melanoma. The superficial nature of SKs mean they can become irritated by clothing and grow. Treatment Unless a seborrheic keratosis is in an area that causes constant irritation, there is really no need to seek treatment. However, dermatologists can remove them quite easily if they are unsightly or uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic, cryosurgery or laser therapy is possible. Generally little scarring is produced, offers AOCD. Although SKs are harmless, their appearance may be similar to skin conditions that are not. Those who are unsure about changes to the skin should always seek the help of a licensed dermatologist.
We certainly have grown... ...but we still welcome new patients adults & children.

Appearance of SKs Some of these growths have a warty, rough surface, while others look like dabs of warm, brown candle wax on the skin. ADA says they can range in color from white to black, but most are tan or brown. The appearance of SKs may change as one ages, and it is even possible for them to fall off naturally over time. The Mayo Clinic says that, unless changes include becoming sore or bleeding without healing, there’s little need to act. SKs may form singularly, but often they appear in groups.

American Irish Stew Servings: 6 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/4 pounds beef, top round, cut into 3/4-inch pieces 3 cloves garlic, minced salt & pepper, to taste 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped 3 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch pieces 2 medium parsnips, cut into large chunks (optional) 3 cups low-fat, reduced-sodium beef broth 4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 leek, coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.
In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic. Cook, gently stirring until meat is evenly browned. Season with salt and pepper. Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender. Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks. Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender. To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook. Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longtime situation starts to move into a new phase. The question for the uncertain Lamb right now is whether to move with it. Facts emerge by midmonth to help you decide. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A talent for organizing your priorities allows the Divine Bovine to enjoy a busy social life and not miss a beat in meeting all workplace and/or family commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What began as a dubious undertaking has now become one of your favorite projects. Your enthusiasm for it rallies support from other doubters-turnedbelievers. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Accept the help of friends to get you through an unexpectedly difficult situation. There’ll be time enough later to investigate how all this could have happened so fast. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Change is a major factor for the Big Cat through midmonth. Be prepared to deal with it on a number of levels, including travel plans and workplace situations. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not like all the changes that have begun to take place around you. But try to find something positive in at least some of them that you can put to good use. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s unsettling experience could create more problems if it’s not handled with care and love. And who’s the best one to offer all that? You, of course. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It might not be the right time for you to start a new venture. But it’s a good time to start gathering facts and figures so you’ll be set when the GO! sign lights up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sagacious Sagittarius should have no trouble deciding between those who can and those who cannot be trusted to carry out a workplace commitment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Surprise, surprise. It looks as if that one person you once thought you could never hope to win over to your side suddenly just might choose to join you. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might have to set aside your pride for now and accept a change that isn’t to your advantage. Cheer up. There’ll be time later to turn this around in your favor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your creative self emerges as dominant through midmonth. This should help you restart that writing or arts project you’ve left on the shelf for far too long. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of encouraging others by example to come out from the shadows and enjoy life to the fullest. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOME-BREWED COFFEE THAT’S AS GOOD AS IT GETS (NAPSI)—Have you ever pondered the delicious cup of coffee served up at your favorite coffee shop and wished your hurried morning home-brewed cup could be just as good? If you use one of the push-button pod brewing systems, you are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor, value and the environment. Do you realize that when you buy coffee pods, you are paying about $40 per pound of coffee and adding greatly to the local landfill? A drip coffeemaker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but you probably waste half the coffee that you brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers, you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and what’s more, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer such as the AeroPress coffeemaker you can brew a smooth, rich cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The AeroPress has the unique capability to brew espresso so you can make café-quality lattes at home. The process is simple, cleanup is fast and easy, and the grounds, including the filter, are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Use a manual brewing device, brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and you’ll get the most out of every bag of coffee you buy.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Try tinted moisturizer. A carefree, breezy look often means not being weighed down by a lot of makeup. It may be possible to skip foundation and rely only on concealer to cover up small blemishes or alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Another option to try is tinted moisturizer, which can keep skin supple and offer a light amount of color to even out pigment. BB creams also can provide you with an all-in-one beauty product, as such creams frequently contain sunscreen, color tinting and anti-aging ingredients.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1976, I had a mole on my right calf about the size of a pencil eraser. A biopsy showed it to be melanoma, and they thought they had removed all of the cancer, but they did another surgery to be sure that I was cancer-free. I am a natural redhead and never sunbathed or used a tanning bed. It has been 38 years, and I am still cancer-free. I get a skin check from my dermatologist every six months. At the time of my diagnosis, my family doctor said that if the melanoma spreads inside the body, “the ball game is over.” Is that still true? I know melanoma can be deadly. -- W.K. ANSWER: Melanoma is the most commonly lethal skin cancer. Although there have been some exciting new developments in treating advanced melanoma, the survival rate for stage IV melanoma, where the cancer has spread to internal organs, is only 15 percent to 20 percent at five years. Fortunately, the survival rate for melanoma caught early, at stage I, is greater than 90 percent, which is why it’s so important to know the ABCDE’s of melanoma recognition: A: Asymmetry - one half looks different from the other half; B: Border - the border in a melanoma is often irregular, not a near-circle; C: Color - melanomas usually are not a uniform color, like most benign lesions. Some areas are light brown, others brown-black, others red or pale; D: Diameter - greater than 6 millimeters, the eraser on a standard pencil; E: Enlargement or Evolution - any change in color, shape, size or symptoms (including bleeding). Any of these should prompt a visit to your regular doctor or a dermatologist. As an internist, these are the features I look for, and I have a very low threshold for sending suspicious lesions to my colleagues in dermatology. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. Surgery to relieve the nerve compression is successful in some cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. The sunflowers you planted on Craig Road are a beautiful reminder of your commitment to agriculture and to our community. I would like to thank the following businesses for helping to make the '63 East High School class reunion a great one: Webster Golden Boys, Hegedorn's, Mark's Pizza Webster and Marketview Liquor.
given to study was not on the final or only a small portion was included in our final exam.” I’m not certain why some teachers don’t create learning objectives, teach to those learning objectives throughout the year, and provide pretest refresher packets to study on those learning objectives, then test on the same. Seems like an easy process to follow and yet we’ve observed multiple instances where our children (and their friends) have shared specific examples that validate these circumstances. If the goal is to teach and have kids learn long term, please ensure consistency between what you teach and test Went to a moving up day ceremony – my granddaughter and her friends moving up, Rite of Passage. During the National Anthem a few people did not stand or remove their hat. Being a Vet I understand their right to dis America. I just think in front of these young adults, it is a poor example from adults who enjoy the Rights & Privileges in America and yet show disrespect
to America in front of these amazing young adults. These young folks learn from us (that’s why it’s the United States). It’s up to us together to show these young adults what is right. Thank you, A Vet It's getting OLD of the garbage men not picking up everything. I keep on having to call the legislature. I keep on having to call them. And we put NOTHING unusual in our garbage. The neighbors across the road and the neighbors next door can put out tons of stuff and EVERYTHING gets taken. I think this person needs to be replaced, because this is happening often and I think this is being intentionally done. I can’t be calling this waste company to keep on coming back to get what is left on the lawn. About holding a child on your lap when mowing, it is a dangerous thing to do. Turn off the deck, give the kid a ride around the yard, and then put him (or her) off the tractor and away from the mower. Child safety is the business of everyone.
It’s a shame....that the "I Gotta Vent" section is twice the size of "Brighter Side." I am a woman. On Saturday morning, I went to an estate sale a few houses over from mine. Of course nothing was priced. (I find this irritating...apparently people want to sell but are too lazy to come up with a price). I asked the gentleman who was running the sale for a price on items downstairs. He rudely passed over me to assist a woman in a short dress with plenty of cleavage showing (remember, this is an estate sale, not a bar). When he could finally make time for me, I asked him for prices on an assortment of screws, nails, etc. He replied, "That's a boy thing." Really? In 2018? Women cannot buy hardware? Needless to say, I left immediately. I simply cannot fathom this man's behavior... it was rude, crude and disrespectful. This man needs to step out of his cave.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.
