1948 70th Anniversary Series- Volume 12 Putting together and writing our history over the past 12 months has been an interesting and sometimes emotional experience. So many changes since that first edition in 1948. So many wonderful people have passed through our doors – advertisers, suppliers, many friends and most especially our dedicated employees. As a family we have been blessed many times over as we have worked together in the advertising business. The future is bright! We are excited and happy to have a third generation already involved and ready to take on the next chapters of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

Girl Scouts of WNY announces Madelyn Sherrill as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout Submitted By: Susan Cook, Community Relations Specialist Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Madelyn Sherrill of Rochester, NY, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Sherrill’s project, The Comfort Cupboard, was focused on creating a hygiene and menstrual care supply for people in need. ␣ ␣␣ Sherrill stated, “I created a resource for menstrual products at the Trillium Outreach Center in Rochester. My goal was to reach people on social welfare or who were homeless since it is hard for them to afford such a basic necessity and it is not covered by any social welfare programs like SNAP Benefits or Medicare. I created a lesson for the seventh- and tenth-grade health classes at my school where they learn about the need for menstrual products and the inequality that tends to come with needing them. Once they have had the lesson, the class brings in menstrual products to donate to the Comfort Cupboard. There are new classes every semester so there will be a constant flow of menstrual products for the Comfort Cupboard. This will hopefully solve a small portion of the problem we have in Rochester of illegally buying and selling food stamps and other benefits.” ␣ ␣␣ Sherrill added, “When people comment on how relaxed I am or my adaptability my reply is usually, ‘Oh, It’s because I’ve been a Girl Scout my whole life.’ It has shaped me and taught me how to be a woman of courage, confidence, and character and proven that I can do anything with the help of my sisters and leaders.” ␣ ␣␣ Sherrill received her Gold Award at the Gold Award Ceremony on June 2, 2018. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts. Sherrill was also the recipient of the Girl Scouts of Western New York Educational Scholarship for $1000 and the Kim Welsh Memorial Scholarship for $500, which she also received at the ceremony. ␣ ␣␣ The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a

girl can be passionate about—in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be on-going or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities and to enter the military a full rank higher than her peers.␣ ␣ ␣␣ The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. ␣ ␣␣ The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing. To learn more, visit␣http://gswny.org/ .

PLAYING MOTHERHOOD FOR LAUGHS (NAPSI)—If any of America’s estimated 74 million kids are yours, an uproarious new book may be for you (and make a great gift for any mom you know). As you may have found, parenthood is not for the fainthearted. It’s often a mayhem marathon filled with exhausting days, punctuated by public outbursts, poison control phone calls, and poop (everywhere). But you’re not alone. About The Book The book, “Parentally Incorrect: True Tales by Real Moms About the F**ked-Up Things Their Kids Have Done” (HCI), comes straight from Tracey Tee and Shayna Ferm’s irreverent mom-to-mom comedy tour, The Pump and Dump Show. Created mostly from cards by women across the country who confessed the craziest, most exasperating, unforgettable things their kids have done, it also features Sad Cake moments-those little bummers that deflate you; Stump the Breeder trivia questions; Awesome MOMents drinking games; and Lies We Tell Ourselves Before We Have Kids. The idea behind the book is to help parents everywhere realize that the insanity that can happen is in no way a reflection of their worth or skills. Where To Find It It’s available in stores everywhere and on Amazon at https://amzn.to/2w3vzlZ.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what follows. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan to take it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason why someone might have tried to hurt you. But at least you’ll have an insight into why it happened. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need to know before leaping onto center stage. Best to move carefully at this time so that you can observe what’s happening around you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to expand your outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your wise counsel continues to be needed as that family situation works itself out. Meanwhile, the decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your job situation brightens thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a personal relationship you might have neglected for too long. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects favor action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors why you’re the one they’re looking for. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your hard work pays off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Early feedback on your project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are. You are a shining example to others, helping them believe in themselves and what they can do. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

While it might be tempting to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their hottest, it is possible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause significant damage to the lawn. Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that exposure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suffer from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeowners should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer.

While passing through Dansville last Friday, we experienced alternator trouble with a 3-day old alternator! We're grateful to Van Hyning Automotive for replacing the alternator and communicating with the garage who originally replaced it. You rescued our weekend and family reunion. The people of Dansville are fortunate to have such capable mechanics! Thanks to our employers, Steve and Kim for the amazing lunch supplied by Tom Wahl’s Food Truck last week. It is always a summer event we all look forward too. GVPS is a great place to work with many

special perks! Thanks again Steve and Kim. Your GVPS family This past weekend my husband and I were out for a ride on our Harley. We never have a plan when we leave our house except to stop for lunch somewhere different. Some of our stops have been the Glenn Iris Inn in Letchworth Park and Bristol Harbor Golf Course. The views we have seen are amazing. I love to see all the different homes and the gardens and landscaping people take pride in. Letchworth is a beautiful park that has so much to offer. The hills and valleys around us are beautiful. We are

attempts. When you ghost a small rental business (that didn’t even require a deposit) it takes away from someone that actually wanted it. You own a clothing business and you wouldn't like it if someone did that to you! You're the reason rental businesses require deposits.

Next time you make a reservation for something (especially at a small business) have the decency to contact them and let them know you want to cancel. It is extremely rude to book something and then ignore confirmation

Have you ever returned something to the store? Ever wondered what happened to that item afterwards? So many assume it gets put right back on the shelf, but that actually rarely happens. State laws dictate that many (read: most) returned items be trashed. Socks and underwear? Garbage. Any food item? Trash. Any over-the-

so lucky to live in such a beautiful state. If you have the opportunity and time, take a drive outside of your neighborhood and see what you’re missing. I love summer in NY. Thank you to the folks who have local fruit/veggie stands, to share the benefits from their work growing all the fresh produce. Another benefit of small town living!!! Thanks to Coach Jackie for a wonderful U9 Summer Soccer season. The girls progressed beautifully and by the end of the season were a real team! It was a treat to see them come out of their shells, face fears, learn skills

counter meds and vitamins? Dumpster. Swim wear? Gone. The list goes on and on... So if you ever complain about retail waste, know that much of this is the customer's fault. Be sure of what you're buying. Don't purchase a clothing item in 3 sizes to try on at home and return what doesn't fit. That return will probably end up in a landfill with countless other items purchased and returned by thoughtless customers. Think first, and shop consciously. But FREEDOM DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO DO AS YOU PLEASE. It does however, give me the right to be inside my home and not have to

and develop a team bond. Thank you for all your hard work and patience. - Appreciative Parents To whoever planted the gorgeous sunflower field on the way out of Avon, thank you! It’s a bright spot we look forward to passing every day.

listen to bombs going off all around me. I have the right to go to sleep when I so choose, not when you decide to stop making noise that is so loud it’s heard inside of my home with the windows closed. Whether it's fireworks, loud music or whatever else you so thoughtlessly impose upon your neighbors, you are violating my right to have peace and quiet inside of my own home. Since you don’t care how your actions impact others, I won’t feel bad for calling the cops in order to protect MY RIGHT TO BE FREE FROM YOUR THOUGHTLESS AND ILLEGAL ACTIVITY. There are noise and firework laws.

Add health screenings to back-to-school checklist An essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children’s health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school. Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings. Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school. Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can begin a new school year. While the issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents should recognize that many schools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due to religious reasons. Students who have specific learning disabilities or medical conditions that require classroom modification should obtain recent documentation from any therapists or specialists prior to beginning a new school year. Doing so facilitates the process of setting up procedures within the school while ensuring children have what they need to excel in the classroom. All parents may want to ask doctors to provide copies of medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recent copies on file. Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins. This ensures kids won’t be starting off on the wrong foot because of vision problems that could already have been addressed.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Great Vitamin Debate --DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you prescribe vitamins or treatments to enhance the immune system? -- C.N. ANSWER: I do not. In my opinion, a healthy diet makes a deficiency of a vitamin or mineral severe enough to weaken the immune system unlikely. Stress reduction (through many techniques) and good sleep are more important than supplements. People think that a daily vitamin and mineral supplement is like an insurance policy against a good diet. However, many studies have shown that taking vitamins does not, in general, lead to improvements in prevention of disease, including heart disease, cancer or infections. So I would be much more likely to recommend a better diet (especially in the fresh fruits and vegetables) than I would a supplement. Many adults have not gotten all the vaccines that are recommended, and these are a huge benefit to your immune system for those specific bacteria and viruses. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old male in generally good health. I am maybe 10 pounds overweight. I have had no heart attacks or cardiac symptoms. I walk on the treadmill for exercise. I have controlled hypertension, and have been taking simvastatin, 10 mg. My LDL is 71, very favorable. My HDL is also good, at 73. Several years back, when I started the statin, my doctor added Zetia, 10 mg. At the time, I wondered why this would be OK, and he said, “Well, there is a certain synergy there.” While I have continued taking the Zetia and suppose it might be helpful, I wonder if I need it. I say this because it is rather expensive (about $500 a year with my part D coverage). It is the only thing I take that costs me this much. My reading of the literature suggests that while Zetia might help the LDL level, there is no evidence that it improves longevity (i.e. cardiovascular). -- J.P. ANSWER: This is a confusing subject, because the theory (that lowering cholesterol protects your heart) and the evidence (that it actually works) don’t exactly align. High cholesterol certainly is associated with a higher likelihood of heart blockages, which can lead to heart attack and death. However, not all treatments that lower cholesterol reduce risk of heart attack. On the one hand, there are treatments that lower cholesterol that do help your heart. The Mediterranean diet clearly reduces risk of heart attack. Dr. Dean Ornish’s plant-based diet of very little fat and little or no meat, in combination with stress reduction and smoking cessation, actually reverses blockages in arteries in some people. Statin drugs reduce cholesterol and help prevent heart attacks, at least in people at high risk for them. On the other hand, ezetimibe (Zetia) reduces cholesterol, but like most nonstatin drugs to treat high cholesterol, it has not been proven to reduce heart disease risk. It tends to have few side effects and probably is not harmful. But you are correct that it is expensive, and like all medications, it can possibly cause harm. Being conservative about medication, I very rarely prescribe it. Studies are ongoing, and I will readdress this topic when there is more evidence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

Behaviors that may help you reduce your risk for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Colorectal cancer is similarly lethal in Canada, where the Canadian Cancer Society reports it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and the third leading among women. Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum or both significantly increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it. Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person’s risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer. • Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer. Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. • Embrace physical activity. While men and women who are physically active can still get colorectal cancer, the CCS notes

Did You Know? Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Though the disease is most often associated with women over 50, anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, which weakens bones and can make them more susceptible to breaks.

Phsyical activity may help men and women reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer. that people who live sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk of developing the disease than those who are active. • Maintain a healthy weight. According to the CCS, people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. • Limit alcohol consumption. The CDC notes that some studies have shown that limiting alcohol consumption may reduce a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is a devastating disease, but men and women who embrace healthy behaviors may be able to lower their risks.

Call 624-2301 1212 Rochester St. Honeoye Falls HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Recycle old equipment. Advancements in technology now occur at a breakneck pace, so the equipment businesses use today may very well be obsolete tomorrow. Businesses that want to be more eco-friendly should recycle rather than discard old equipment. Simply throwing equipment away might even be illegal depending on where an office is located. Some electronics contain mercury, lead or arsenic, hazardous materials that can do significant damage to the environment when not properly disposed of. Some retailers, including the office supply chain Staples, accept old equipment for recycling at their stores at no charge to business owners. If equipment is still functional but somewhat outdated, look into donating it to local organizations in need.
