H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With your Arian charm quotient at an almost all-time high this week, plus all the facts to back you up, you just might win over the last doubters to your proposal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be in line for that job change you applied for. But be advised that you could be called on to defend your qualifications against supporters of other applicants. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new approach to an old idea is one way to get beyond that workplace impasse. No such problems in your personal life, where things continue to flow smoothly. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be more forthcoming about your feelings concerning a proposed change either in your workplace or in your personal life. Your opinions are valuable. Don’t keep them hidden. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A changing situation in your life needs more patience than you appear to be willing to offer. Allowing it to develop at its own pace is the wisest course you can take at this time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With more stability in your life -- on both personal and professional levels - this could be a good time to strengthen relationships with both friends and colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) People have always relied on your integrity not only to get the job done, but to get it done right. So don’t be pressured by anyone into cutting corners to save time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While others might get rattled over unexpected changes, your ability to adapt calmly and competently helps you make a positive impression during a crucial period. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A changing environment might be daunting for some, but the adventurous Sagittarian takes it all in stride. A friend from the past could awaken some meaningful memories. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your self-assurance rising to full strength, the bold Goat should feel confident about opening up to new ventures as well as new relationships. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Reaching out to someone who has been unkind to you might not be easy. But in the long run it will prove to have been the right thing to do. A friend offers moral support. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your keen insight once again helps you work through a seemingly insoluble problem in your workplace. The weekend offers a good chance to develop new relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a knack for finding details that others would overlook. You would make a fine research scientist. ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

In his final letter to Americans, John McCain urged Americans to set aside partisan divides. Will Americans seek to find common ground or will the partisan wedge between Americans grow? • The divide will likely get worse before it gets better • We’re learning to find common ground • The current divide is the new normal • It’s always been this way and always will be Poll Ends 9-4-18 Results from 8-28-18 Recently, a Washington teenager was pushed from a 60 ft. bridge by another teenager. Should charges be filed, and if so, to what extent? 48% - Absolutely, assault charges 43% - Yes, reckless endangerment 2% - No, it was an accident 7% - No way! No charges

Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Should You Switch to Alkaline Water? --DEAR DR. ROACH: With everyone drinking a lot of water during the summer, I noticed that the water depot where I fill up my gallon jugs supplies water in different ranges of alkalinity, from 8-10. This seems to be a new venture for the depot. The owner sells the alkaline water from inside the store and claims the benefit of this water is to neutralize the acidity of the many products we eat daily. He suggests that one might start by taking water with a pH of 8 or stronger, then dilute it to one’s requirements. The purified water involves reverse osmosis so the company reintroduces calcium, magnesium and potassium to bring it up in value. Do you have any comments on alkaline water being consumed during this hot summer season? -- B.A. ANSWER: I recently have seen much confusion about acid and alkaline consumption. By adding a base to water, you raise the pH, making it more alkaline. You can do this at home simply by adding a bit of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to your water -you don’t need to buy alkaline water. Calcium carbonate is a common antacid. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are all elements we need, so in that respect, the alkaline water you are talking about is better than the sodium you would add to water with baking soda. However, the important point is that under normal circumstances your body does not need any help in maintaining pH or in neutralizing acid. The body’s systems are able to maintain pH under almost any dietary condition. Alkaline water is not necessary for health. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old, physically and mentally in good health. Fourteen years ago, I had a triple bypass, which was very successful. Since then I have had trouble with my blood pressure. The low always runs between 50 and 70, which is fine, but the high side is between 150 and 190, which is not good. My doctor has me on amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide. Is there any way to lower the high pressure without also lowering the low side? My doctor does not want to increase the dosages because it would keep me tired all the time. -- J.B. ANSWER: High systolic blood pressures in the elderly often are due to very stiff blood vessels. Since you have coronary artery disease, I think it’s likely that you have calcium in your large arteries, which make them unyielding to the degree that the rush of blood from the heart drives the pressure up very high. It may be impossible to lower the pressure without causing symptoms, so I understand your doctor’s concerns and position. When I think about treating blood pressure, I think more about trying to prevent bad outcomes (like stroke and heart attack) than just treating a number. There is good evidence that ACE inhibitors, like ramipril, reduce heart attack risk in people with known risk factors, so I might try a very low dose to see if it helps the blood pressure without making you feel fatigued or lightheaded. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum was bustling with excitement as Corning Museum of Glass’s GlassBarge prepared for its first glass blowing demonstration of the day. Visitors began arriving around 10am, an hour before the first demonstration, eager to board the barge. Why GlassBarge? Why now, and what about it is so appealing that an overflow of visitors were willing to watch from the sidewalk? GlassBarge is the signature event of the statewide Erie Canal Bicentennial celebration (1817-2017). After leaving a Brooklyn, NY harbor, GlassBarge began its voyage along the Hudson River, the Erie Canal and down into the Finger Lakes. Rob Cassetti, Senior Director of Creative Strategy and Audience Engagement for The Corning Museum of Glass, explained that his inspiration was to retrace the journey that the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company made in 1868 from Brooklyn to Corning, then becoming Corning Glass, via New York’s waterways. He states that the Corning Glass Company has been doing mobile glass demonstrations since 2001, and the 150-year anniversary of the company’s historic move seemed the perfect opportunity to do something spectacular. The 200-year anniversary of the Erie Canal provided both the inspiration and the means for recreating Corning Glass’s journey. GlassBarge was specifically designed and outfitted for this once-in-a-lifetime journey. Its special frames were designed to be taken down so that it could fit underneath the several bridges along the canal. Special furnaces were designed specifically for maritime use aboard the barge. It is the atmosphere, however, the molten glass being shaped on the Canal, that Cassetti feels resonates with visitors. “We’re celebrating our Canal story,” he says. “Yet, each town has its own Canal stories, as well.” Who better to tell Corning Glass’s Canal story than the glass artists themselves? The glass artists aboard GlassBarge have been traveling for months. There are three very talented artists who make GlassBarge possible. These glass makers are G Brian Juk with 20 years’ experience, Lukas Milanak with four years’ experience and Stephanie Perry whose years of experience falls in between. G Brian shared his insights when I caught up with him on GlassBarge.

Why glass blowing?␣I love the material and the process, the team work and the camaraderie. I also experience immense satisfaction from what I build myself. What different types of glass products does Corning Glass make?␣Everything from light bulbs to optic fiber to screens. You name it. We are living in the age of glass. What have you enjoyed about GlassBarge?␣Learning about the Canal, its importance to a young fledgling America and the way in which it made New York the Empire State by connecting New York City to the Western part of the country at the time. What wouldn’t someone expect about the art of glass blowing?␣How difficult it is. It takes 6 years just to get the basics. What would you say to kids who are interested in glass making?␣You have to try it at least once! You don’t know unless you try. ␣ The incredible display of skill from G Brian while crafting beautiful glass pieces is certainly inspiring. Robert Cassetti promises that glass blowing demonstrations and many more wonderful sights and experiences await at the Corning Museum of Glass. Meanwhile, GlassBarge has several more stops to make before its final celebration on September 22nd. GlassBarge is entertaining, unique and historic, well worth viewing, even from the sidewalk. For more information on remaining GlassBarge stops and demonstration times, please visit␣https://pastport.cmog.org/schedule.html . HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

If my future husband insists on sharing the same name, it's his choice to change to Mr. Jane Doe just as it's my choice to keep mine. Your Light the way for safer nighttime driving Routine vehicle maintenance protects drivers on the road while also protecting the often considerable financial investment they make in their cars and trucks. Maintenance guidelines have changed thanks to technology, but drivers must continue to care for their vehicles to ensure the safety of themselves, their passengers and fellow motorists. From the time they first get behind the wheel, many drivers recognize the need to periodically change their oil and have their tires rotated. But few drivers may understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ headlights, and just how compromised they and their passengers might be when driving with old, dimming or foggy headlamps. Burned out lights greatly diminish driver visibility and may even draw the attention of law enforcement. But headlight bulbs don’t just burn out overnight. As bulbs age, their light output gradually reduces due to use and factors such as humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers concerned about the efficacy of their headlight bulbs can take steps to improve their visibility when driving at night. • Accept your own vulnerability. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision. As a result, drivers’ visual acuity may be reduced by as much as 70 percent when driving at night. Cloudy, dim headlights only exacerbate that problem, further compromising the safety of everyone on the road. Avoid aggressive driving and always obey the speed limits, even when it’s late at night and roads are empty. • Learn to recognize headlamp clouding. According to the automotive lighting innovator Lumileds, sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and even chemicals used in car washes can contribute to headlamp clouding. Clouded headlamps often appear hazed and yellow and reduce headlight output considerably. Routine headlamp inspection can help drivers discover clouded lamps that can greatly compromise nighttime visibility. • Restore clouded headlamps. Clouded headlamps do not necessarily need to be replaced. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit can help drivers restore their clouded headlamp lenses. The kit employs a protective UV coating that effectively restores yellow, hazy lenses that

have been compromised by years of exposure to the elements. • Replace headlamps that are past their prime. While not all clouded headlamps need to be replaced, some aging or outdated bulbs are best replaced with new models designed to produce substantially more light output. Drivers whose vehicles are equipped with standard halogen headlights may be surprised to learn that such lights typically begin to break down within two to three years of installation, during which time light output might be reduced by as much as 30 percent. Compared to standard halogen bulbs, Philips X-tremeVision Bulbs can put substantially more light on the road while producing longer beam patterns that make it easier for drivers to see more of what’s ahead of them at night. Drivers’ visibility is dramatically reduced once the sun goes down, but maintaining headlamps can help drivers combat that loss of vision. More information about headlamp maintenance and the alternatives to traditional halogen headlights is available at www.philips.com/automotive.

Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.
