PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority. This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking.
Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Common Pain Reliever Can Have Side Effects --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 44-year-old man with chronic headaches and migraines. Should I worry about the long-term effects of taking an NSAID (such as diclofenac) at least once a week? -- G.W. ANSWER: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are among the most commonly taken classes of drugs in the world, with 17 million Americans alone taking them daily. Although these drugs are generally safe, any medication has the potential for side effects. Typically, the higher the dose and the more frequently it is taken, the increased risk of side effects. So, a once-aweek dose would be expected to have a low side effect risk. Adverse effects from this class are among the most frequently seen in clinical medicine. Although they can affect multiple systems, let me briefly go over the side effects of NSAIDs on the GI tract, kidneys and heart. NSAIDs might affect the stomach, and although we think of ulcers, stomach pain without ulcers is more common. Ulcers happen most often in people who take higher doses for long periods of time. A history of ulcers, older age and use of other medications (steroids, warfarin, antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, or Plavix) increase the risk of ulcers and bleeding. NSAIDs also might affect the small bowel and colon, causing bleeding and diarrhea, among other symptoms. Again, these are most common in high doses for extended periods. NSAIDs can affect the kidneys, causing both acute and chronic kidney failure, but only in a few percent of people. Periodic blood and urine examination is appropriate for people who are on long-term NSAIDs. The risk of heart disease among people who use NSAIDs regularly is increased, but in people without known heart disease, the risk is small -- about one bad event, such as heart attack, stroke or episode of heart failure, per thousand people taking the medication for a year. I would advise you that the risk of any of these side effects is unlikely in someone taking the drug only once a week, but people who take these drugs every day should know about the potential harms. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When I was 64, a cyst was found in my bladder. When the cyst was removed, it was found to be cancerous. My urologist wants me to continue to have an annual cystoscopy, which I do. I’m now 76 and in good health. Do you feel the annual cystoscopy is still necessary? -- C.K. ANSWER: Now that more people have had successful treatment of cancer, we are starting to learn about the risks they face in subsequent years. The risk of another cancer is generally higher, but it’s the exact form of cancer that determines how much risk there is, and consequently, how aggressive follow-up must be. In the case of bladder cancer, I have read some studies that the risk is quite small after five years. However, the American Urologic Association has clear guidelines: Because of the increased risk for recurrence, it recommends annual cystoscopy indefinitely. Cystoscopy is a pretty safe procedure, so I think your urologist’s recommendation is reasonable. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might need to get more facts to help you work out those problems with your new project. As always, a friendly approach shows the charming Arian at his or her persuasive best. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information is what energizes ambition, and this is a good time for the ambitious Bovine to expand his or her range of knowledge and to be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to consider making some long-overdue decorating changes at home or in your workplace. A splash of color can help raise spirits, even on the grayest day. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Learn more. Earn more. That’s the formula for Moon Children looking to expand their career horizons. Investigate the best places to get those training courses you’ll need. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your creative side helps gain attention for many of your ideas. But don’t neglect the practical aspects involved in implementing their move from paper to production. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A health problem should not be ignored. The sooner you check it out, the sooner you can deal with it and then move on. Some job advice comes from an unlikely source. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A relationship takes an unexpected shift that could leave you puzzled and hurt. Asking for an explanation could help uncover the reason for this sudden turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your busy schedule has drawn down much of your energy levels. Restore them by spending a wellearned time out enjoying the arts -perhaps with that special someone. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Make that presentation with confidence. Remember: When you show you believe in yourself, it helps persuade others that you truly know what you’re doing. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you usually prefer doing things on your own, a group effort might be advisable at this time. Try to keep an open mind about suggestions from colleagues. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) This could be a good time to reassess some of your recent decisions and see if any adjustments should be made based on facts that you might have just uncovered. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An emotionally charged situation creates uncertainty about the future of your relationship. Best advice: Talk things out while there’s still time to reach a new understanding. BORN THIS WEEK: You tend to act on matters of principle despite what others might advise. Addicted seniors a serious problem: Opioid use among the older population The public is quickly learning that drug abuse goes beyond the illegal substances that are purchased on the street. Abuse of drugs extends to the prescription medications sitting in many medicine cabinets. While teenagers and young adults may be the first to be stereotyped as prescription drug abusers, seniors may have unwittingly become mixed up in one of the most misused prescription classes: opioid pain relievers. The problem of opioid abuse has been a growing issue for years. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance abuse of opioid pain relievers. Older patients are increasingly and repeatedly prescribed opioids to address chronic pain from arthritis, cancer and other problems that become more apparent as people age. Data from U.S. Medicare recipients found that, in 2011, roughly 15 percent of seniors were prescribed an opioid after being discharged from the hospital. When followed up on three months later, 42 percent were still taking the medication. Fast forward to 2015, and almost one-third of all Medicare patients were prescribed opioid painkillers by their physicians, says AARP. The Canadian Institute for Health Information says adults between the ages of 45 and 64 and seniors age 65 and older had the highest rates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisoning over the past 10 years. AARP also indicates nearly three million Americans age 50 or older have started to take painkillers for reasons beyond what their doctors prescribed. Experts from the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing warn that dependence on opioids can set in after just a few days. Discomfort and side effects can occur when the pills are stopped. Opioids can decrease pain at first, but many people find they can be less effective over time. As a result, patients need to take greater amounts. Although many people can take opioids in small doses for short periods of time without problems, many find
LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.
Opioid abuse is a problem for all age groups, including seniors.
themselves overcome by a troubling addiction. Some doctors prefer not to use opioids as a first line of treatment for chronic pain. Another possible risk of opioids among seniors is that the medication can cause disorientation that may lead to falls and fractures. The senior care resource A Place for Mom also says that prescription narcotics may increase risk of respiratory arrest. What’s more, an older body may not absorb and filter medicines as effectively as younger bodies can. This means that older adults might become addicted to or have side effects from a prescription drug at a lower dose. Seniors concerned about opioids can discuss other options with their doctors, such as nonopioid medications and alternative therapies for pain management, like massage or acupuncture. If opioids are prescribed, ask for the lowest dose and don’t exceed the time frame for taking the medicine. Only take the pills when absolutely necessary, and never mix opioids with alcohol or other substances.

They said the Vet Clinic has to pay fees and they are pushing it off on the clients whether there was waste or not, to cover their costs. With the fees they charge us now, I think this is so unjust. We are trying to make ends meet as it is and keep our pets healthy and happy. So not right! To our neighbors who live across the street from us who feel the need to give my younger sister the middle finger whenever you see her outside, what kind of message are you sending to your young children who are with you when you do it? So the next time you see her and she waves at you, be a decent person and wave back; you will make her happy and you just might make yourself happy as well; besides, if you don’t want to be civil to your neighbors, maybe you shouldn’t have moved into the village. Congratulations to the group(s) who've succeeded in ruining the [local] Boardwalk for everyone. Seems it became 'Party Central' for a select few and they chose to throw their empty beer bottles, cans, liquor and soda bottles directly into the watershed rather than disposing of them responsibly. The road crews posted construction signs on [local road] from [local town] to [local town] months ago but no work has been started. The road is in despicable condition!! KettleFest in Victor Highlights Growing Trend By Amanda Dudek

Local, sustainable farming and artisanship: that is what KettleFest is all about. What does that look like exactly? According the USDA website, the expectations for sustainable farming are that human needs will be met while the environment and its natural resources will be protected, most efficiently used and integrated with natural, biological cycles and controls while maintaining a grower’s economic viability. Interestingly, sustainable farming has also engendered the expectation that it will enhance a community’s quality of life’s a worthwhile undertaking for any industry. For Kettle Ridge Farm, the home of KettleFest, sustainable certainly means grown here in such a way as to not strip the environment of its natural resources, it certainly means not adding chemicals to its products nor using GMOs. As what is being added to our food is increasingly being called to the public’s attention, this festival was both timely and enjoyable. Kettle Ridge Farm is a family-owned farm on which the Hurley family produces maple syrup and wildflower honey, grows shiitake mushrooms and gathers eggs. The farm, apart from hosting KettleFest, also provided its own Kettle Ridge Farm food truck as well as entertaining culinary demonstrations with guest Chef Jeffory McLean in their log “tasting” cabin. Another food truck, Chef’s Mobile Kitchen, was also dishing up delicious items, and Z Best Foodz served up tasty “street meats,” while neighboring tents of Starla

Bake & Brew offered other treats and goodies. Local craft beverages were also represented by the Twin Elder Brewery of Victor, the Song Hill Winery and the Honeoye Falls Distillery. Children’s activities were provided, as well. Young visitors were invited to participate in exploring the science of electronics in safe, ageappropriate play. There was also an art space with long tables where children could paint a plain, beehive drawer and make it as colorful and unique as they liked. A cornhole toss game was set up on the center lawn, and hula hoops were available, as well. Finally, chicken races were held inside a wireenclosed area. Children and adults alike selected small, colored strips of paper matching the colored foot of the chicken of their choice. When the race began, chickens were encouraged down the enclosed space via the cheers of the crowd and the feed being spread down the hill before them. Once a winner emerged, those who selected the winning chicken received a small prize. Several local artisans also attended the festival, offering a fairly wide range of goods from dog treats to soy candles to photography to woodworking. Several groups played music throughout the day on a stage in front of haybale seating. Behind these seats, a tent with tables and chairs served as a shaded space to sit, eat and enjoy the tunes. This rustic festival was full of products, demonstrations, activities and plain, downhome goodness, setting hopes high for next year.
