Be A Host-a-Racer! Fairport, NY will host an overnight stop on the
2018 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty, Saturday, June 23. The Great Race, the world’s premier old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to town for the $150,000 event, with the first car rolling onto South Main Street downtown starting at 4:30 p.m.
Teams and cars from Japan, England, Germany, Canada and every corner of the United States will be participating in their vintage automobiles dating back as far as 1913. “There are more than 500 people just in our entourage from all around the world taking part in this incredible adventure,” director Jeff Stumb said. Along the route, competitors will travel through four states - New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine - and two Canadian provinces - New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The Great Race, which began 35 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start - and hopefully finish - one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a firsthand look. For more info, go to www.greatrace.com or contact Jeff Stumb at jeff@greatrace.com or 423-648-8542.

whoever received it had just opened it and kept it. You have restored my faith in the goodness of people! Many thanks!
You saved Mother’s Day! Many thanks to the kind person who
received my Macy's package in error on 5/9, and delivered it to my home in Batavia. My address had been cut off, and I have no idea where the Post Office actually left it. It contained a Mother's Day present from my college-student daughter, who saved several paychecks to buy it for me. We were both feeling terrible after having been notified it had been delivered, but knowing we did not receive it. It must have taken you time and effort to track me down using only a partial name and street address. We were so relieved when my son called and said someone had dropped it off at our side door! I was really afraid it had been stolen, or that
Thank you to 3 out of 4 local nursery programs, who said yes to my 4 year old child to attend their daycare. Even though my child could only attend 2 out of the 3 days/week, they felt it was to my child's benefit to attend for the 2 days, and they would provide me with the day missed so I can teach what they missed. The 3 daycares said 2 days was better than not going at all to advance to kindergarten. A BIG thank you to having my child's well-being first.
Friday the 11th, around 7:30pm I fell down in the Wegmans store entry at the flower area! You came over to make sure I was okay! I was so embarrassed and aggravated with myself, that I didn’t thank you! Please accept my thanks and gratitude for your kindness!
Schlepping your puppy around in a baby sling makes it crystal clear that you are gaming the ADA by claiming your newborn dog is a service animal. It is a pet that you choose to carry around like an infant, taking it out in the checkout of a grocery store. No, the employees can't ask you anything, BUT I CAN! I called you out and I will do so each and every time I
witness people like you taking advantage of a law created to help the truly disabled live full lives. Licking your fingers while you shop for groceries doesn't count as a 'service'. My JD has Yale stamped on it. Your GED didn't help you argue your case very intelligently. How disappointed, unhelpful and morally lacking. On March 19th, late in the afternoon, I was pulling into a local store parking lot when I hit the curb. I parked in the handicap spot. A lady tapped on my window and said "Your wheelchair fell out of your container on the back of your car; it is over there in the parking lot." As she walked towards the store, she turned and also said "your door is open on the container." I wish I had responded to her limited willingness to help, but I missed my opportunity. It is hard to
retrieve a wheelchair from the ground when you only have one leg to stand on. Thanks for the help lady, and to those who drove by while I hopped for my wheels. To the wife who wrote on her husband's behalf regarding the naked neighbor. You put a smile on a lot of faces with that vent, made my husband and I laugh. Sounds like you can't do anything about it and you're probably encouraging her to walk around naked. Stop complaining for your husband. He could just stop looking. We live at the [local apartment complex]. It's hard for us to figure out how [big box store] would allow even a single piece of debris to blow around, let alone the hundreds and hundreds of pieces line the road and the fields. It's a disgrace to our friends that come visit us. It's bad enough
who [big box store] doesn't hire a young person to keep the parking lot free from roving grocery carts but to allow the blowing trash is unacceptable. To my neighbor two houses over who left their dog outside barking at 6:45am and 8am Saturday 04/14 morning: the next time I come home at 2:30am my hand will accidentally slip on the steering wheel horn due to lack of sleep. I can't believe I have seen a Lawn Service Truck on our [Lake] Road twice this Spring. I truly hope it is just for Lawn MOWING. With all the worries of too much Phosphorous in our Finger Lakes they shouldn't be spraying anywhere near the Lake or the watershed areas. Shame on any resident who calls for their spraying services around the water that we drink!
Many thanks sent to Ravens Food Center. You truly are a blessing to the whole community. Every Saturday your smiling faces and good nature feed so many families. Thanks for all you do!! On Monday, April 16th I went to Town & Country Restaurant in Batavia for a late breakfast. When I asked my waitress for the check she told me someone had picked up my check. I didn't know anyone in the restaurant but whoever you are THANK YOU; there are a lot of good people around. THANKS AGAIN. GOD BLESS

Your Learn about cataracts to see more clearly Many people take their vision for granted until a problem arises that affects their ability to see. While certain conditions may occur suddenly, others develop more gradually and may not even be noticeable until the problem has progressed significantly. Cataracts are a common vision problem that is often associated with aging. The National Eye Institute says that, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Prevent Blindness America says there are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined. The American Optometric Association defines a cataract as a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye. Depending on its size, cataracts can interfere with normal vision. They typically occur in people over the age of 55. A cataract can be present in one or both eyes. The lens is responsible for helping to focus light or an image on the retina. In a healthy lens, fluid and protein are arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear, offers NEI. However, as one ages, the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. Over time, this clouding may grow. Researchers also suspect there are other causes to cataracts, such as smoking or diabetes. In addition, wear and tear on the lens can develop into cataract clouding. Significant alcohol consumption, UV radiation, eye surgery, and high myopia also may contribute to cataract formation. All About Vision says the types of cataracts include: • Subcapsular cataract, which occurs at the back of the lens; • Nuclear cataract, which forms deep in the central zone of the lens; and • Cortical cataract, which starts as white opacities in the periphery of the lens and then grows inward.
Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance. LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142
How To Avoid Growing Bored In Retirement • Embrace a new hobby. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom.
The Mayo Clinic advises that there are no known methods to prevent cataracts or slow their progression. But choosing a healthy diet full of antioxidants, quitting bad habits like smoking, managing diabetes, and having regular eye examinations can help. It’s also a good idea to wear sunglasses that block against UVA and UVB light when outdoors. Cataracts can cause blurring of vision and even make it difficult to see in bright conditions. Colors may seem faded, night vision may be adversely affected and glare may be problematic. The AOA says that early cataracts typically are not treated and changes to prescriptions may provide temporary visual improvement. If a cataract progresses to the point that it affects one’s ability to perform everyday tasks, surgery in which an artificial lens replaces the natural lens may be necessary. Learn more about cataracts by visiting www.nei.nih.gov, www.aoa.org, or www.allaboutvision.com.

HOW TO STOP A ‘SILENT KILLER’ (NAPSI)—High blood pressure is often silent—showing no signs or symptoms—but it’s not invisible. Survivors are speaking out to show the real impact of high blood pressure, and a new campaign from the Ad Council, American Heart Association and American Medical Association provides resources to help you and your doctor create a treatment plan that works for you. Survivors William, Jill, Francisco, Allyson and others show you what high blood pressure looks like while telling their stories at LowerYourHBP.org to encourage you to get your blood pressure under control before it’s too late. Understanding High Blood Pressure High blood pressure is any level of blood pressure above 130/80. Its consequences include heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, vision loss, sexual dysfunction and peripheral artery disease. According to the American Heart Association, 46 percent of Americans have high blood pressure, but only about half of them have it under control. Committing To A Plan Once you know you have high blood pressure, you can manage it very effectively through changes in eating habits, physical activity, and, when needed, medication. The best way to avoid the consequences of high blood pressure is to talk to your doctor and commit to a treatment plan that works for your life. Here are some questions to answer in preparation for your doctor visit: • How have you been feeling? • Is anything preventing you from sticking to your current plan? • Any changes in your blood pressure? • Any side effects from any medication or symptoms? • How do you treat your side effects and/or symptoms? • What questions or concerns do you have for your doctor? Overcoming Everyday Hurdles If your treatment plan feels overwhelming, your doctor can help you create a more achievable plan. The most effective plan is the one you actually follow. You can use the guide at LowerYourHBP.org to start the right conversation with your doctor. If a hectic schedule, the cost of medication, or your habits are keeping you from sticking to your treatment, talk to your doctor about ways to overcome these barriers. Be clear about your concerns and get all the answers you need. Learn More: You can find important facts, stats and tips and see the campaign’s videos online at www.LowerYourHBP.org. There, you can also find helpful tools as you work with your doctor to create or get a treatment plan to bring your blood pressure under control. You can save yourself from the “silent killer.”

PLAYING MOTHERHOOD FOR LAUGHS (NAPSI)—If any of America’s estimated 74 million kids are yours, an uproarious new book may be for you (and make a great gift for any mom you know). As you may have found, parenthood is not for the fainthearted. It’s often a mayhem marathon filled with exhausting days, punctuated by public outbursts, poison control phone calls, and poop (everywhere). But you’re not alone. About The Book The book, “Parentally Incorrect: True Tales by Real Moms About the F**ked-Up Things Their Kids Have Done” (HCI), comes straight from Tracey Tee and Shayna Ferm’s irreverent mom-to-mom comedy tour, The Pump and Dump Show. Created mostly from cards by women across the country who confessed the craziest, most exasperating, unforgettable things their kids have done, it also features Sad Cake moments-those little bummers that deflate you; Stump the Breeder trivia questions; Awesome MOMents drinking games; and Lies We Tell Ourselves Before We Have Kids. The idea behind the book is to help parents everywhere realize that the insanity that can happen is in no way a reflection of their worth or skills. Where To Find It It’s available in stores everywhere and on Amazon at https://amzn.to/2w3vzlZ.
GVPS ONLINE POLL: In preparation for the June 1st acceptance of girls into their membership, The Boy Scouts of America announced that it will drop the “boy” from its namesake program and become known as Scouts BSA. What is your opinion of the move to accept girls into the organization? • Girls have their own organization – The Girl Scouts – with programs tailored to their interests. That is the group girls should belong to. • All children should have access to the same opportunities regardless of gender. • Merge the two scouting groups, that will solve the problem! Poll Ends: 05/22/18
Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Poll Results: 05/15/18 How do you feel about this potential influx of immigrants from Central America into the U.S.? • These immigrants will create an undue burden on our economy. They should be sent back to their native country. – 46.2% • We are a diverse country comprised of people from many cultures and they should be welcomed as immigrants have been throughout our history. – 30.7% • If they are truly in danger, they should be allowed to enter the country if standard immigration policies are followed. – 23.1%

Paul Bagdon’s Journey to Working His Passion By Danielle Lorenzo Paul Bagdon was, as a medical malpractice case supervisor for years, working the clock and the corporate structure on a daily basis. During this time, he was able write a little, publishing a short story or an article here and there. Then, Bagdon made the gutsy decision to leave his position to focus on what he really loved to do, write. Paul Bagdon, who now resides at the Baird Nursing Home, still enjoys reading and composing stories. Bagdon said, “I knew if I never left and tried my hand at full-time writing, I would always regret it. If I didn’t go for it, I would be stuck somewhere, at 90 years of age, thinking, ‘I should have’.” Paul has sold roughly 50 books and over 250 of his short stories and articles have appeared in a variety of magazines. The writer also has many novels under pen names, one being Paige Lee Elliston. His first novel sale was a young adult science fiction series that was published by Ballantine Books fifteen years ago. Since then there have been twenty-seven other book sales and over 250 short stories and articles have appeared in a wide range of magazines. Paul’s favorite genre to write is Western novels and two of his novels – Bad Medicine and Deserter were Spur Award finalists.
The Spur award is given by the Western Writers of America and honors distinguished writing about the American West. He stated, “I would still write to this day, whether I was being paid or not. It was tough at first – I was divorced and I did not have much money. I ate a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. But, I knew if I didn’t go for it, I never would.” Bagdon started a writing school which is still going strong. There are open meet-ups at Webster Library on Mondays from 6:30pm-9:00pm. The focus is writing for publication and some attendees have several of their own books published.

DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of possibilities begin to open up by midweek. Some seem more appealing than others. But wait for more facts to emerge later on before you consider which to choose. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bravo to the determined Bovine. While others might give up, you continue to search for answers. Expect your Taurean tenacity to begin paying off by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to consider stepping back from the task at hand for a while. This could help you get a better perspective on what you’ve done and what still needs to be done. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your keen Cancerian insight should help you determine whether a new offer is solid or just more fluff ‘n’ stuff. The clues are all there waiting for you to find them. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Being ignored is difficult for any proud Leo or Leona. But pushing yourself back into the spotlight might be unwise. Instead, let things work themselves out at their own pace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to uncover a colleague’s secret under the pretext of showing concern is ill-advised. Control your curiosity to avoid raising resentment in the workplace. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect to hear good news about a loved one. Also, be prepared for some changes in several family relationships that could develop from this lucky turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprises are expected to accompany a number of changes that will continue through part of next week. At least one could involve a romantic situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to have faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace goal that suddenly seems out of reach is no problem for the sure-footed Goat, who moves steadily forward despite any obstacles placed in his or her way. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Uncertainty about who is right and who isn’t might keep you from making a clear-cut decision. Wait until you know more about what you’re being asked to decide. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful to keep your emotions in check when dealing with a demanding personal situation. You need to set an example of strength for others to follow. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an extraordinary ability to rally people to do their best. You would be a treasure as a teacher.

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.
--DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many articles about high blood pressure, but I want to know about low blood pressure. What is normal? What is low, and what is dangerously low? I have a heart issue for which I take medication. I want to know if my blood pressure is too low. -- Anon. ANSWER: Among young adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults. For people with healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting. In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications used for CHF reduce blood pressure, which can even limit the amount of medication that can be used. In people with blockages in their arteries, too low a blood pressure can cause inadequate blood flow to parts of the heart and cause angina symptoms. The blood pressure is dangerously low when a disease process is causing the low blood pressure. In extreme cases, low blood pressure is one of the most dangerous signs of shock. But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: I have received more letters about hearing loss than I would have believed possible. Most of the advice was consistent, so let me review what both professionals and people who have been through the process of getting hearing aids have advised. First, have realistic expectations about what a hearing aid can do. It does not make your hearing what it was 50 years ago. Loud noises can be painfully overamplified. Second, find someone who really knows what he or she is doing. The people whose technicians spent a lot of time teaching, discussing the different options and adjusting them after purchase were the most satisfied. (The adjustment period can take weeks.) A referral from a satisfied friend could be a good place to start. Several professionals recommended that your audiologist be certified by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association. Third, be prepared to spend some money. Good hearing aids are expensive. More expensive doesn’t always mean better, but most of my readers felt that the money they spent on hearing aids was well worth it. I’m sure there are some great ones, and some not as great. Many veterans wrote me to tell me about their (mostly) good experiences at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Fourth, try many models. Some people prefer in-the-ear, some overthe-ear. Because it takes a long time to get used to them, you need to wear them pretty much constantly. Both your ears and your brain need time to adjust, so be patient. Finally, several people and one chapter president wrote to me about the Hearing Loss Association of America (www.hearingloss.org) and the benefit they gained from visiting their local chapter and sharing their experiences. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
