HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

IDEAS ON PAPER (NAPSI)—For over 40 years, works by famed sculptor Strong-Cuevas have been acclaimed and enjoyed in major museums and private collections. Now, you can have them at your fingertips. That’s because Abrams Books, the premier art book publisher, has created a lavishly illustrated coffee table sized book of 190 of her color and black-and-white drawings, “Strong-Cuevas Drawings: Ideas on Paper.” All the drawings have been thematically arranged and explore recurring themes of Strong-Cuevas’ art. Strong-Cuevas says her work expresses thoughts about universal consciousness, space and time, and inner mediation. Best known for her sculptures made from bronze, stainless steel and aluminum, StrongCuevas’ art often portrays the human head and plays with scale. Her drawings express the same themes. The book also features a foreword by noted art historian and critic Jan Garden Castro, who has written extensively about Georgia O’Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Lin, and numerous others. Also published by Abrams is the critically acclaimed “Strong-Cuevas Sculpture: Premonitions in Retrospect,” featuring photos of her sculpture. Learn More: The book is available at Barnes & Noble and online at bn.com, Amazon.com and www.abramsbooks.com.

I need a home Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi I’m Bruin, yes like Boston Bruins! I’m a Labradane, my mom is a blue Great Dane and my dad is a silver Lab. I come from a litter of 15! I love to play with my not so big brother Scofield the Maine Coon and my yellow Labradane brother Liam. My favorite thing to do is swim in the bathtub, until I don’t fit anymore. I’m going to be a big boy! I have lots of energy and love to play. But the best part of the day is snuggling up in bed with mommy, daddy and my brothers. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DID YOU KNOW?

Get started on that “To Do List” NO JOB TOO SMALL We specialize in your pending home sale “Punch List.”

Don’t like extreme heat or rain?

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Count to 10 if you must, but don’t lose your temper, despite that person’s (you know who!) efforts to goad you into reacting. Your restraint will pay off in a big way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week finds you in a sociable mood, ready and eager to enjoy the company of family and friends. It’s also a good time to seek out and renew old friendships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Patience is called for as you await a decision about that project you’re eager to launch. Meanwhile, try to set aside more time to share with that special person in your life. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid becoming involved in a workplace dispute early in the week by insisting both sides submit their stands to a neutral arbitrator. Things begin to cool off by Thursday. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It promises to be a busy but productive week for the Big Cat. The pace slows by Friday, allowing you to catch up on matters you put aside but that now need your attention. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suddenly disruptive family situation is best handled with a cool, calm and collected response. Wait until things settle to let off all that pent-up emotional steam. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your practical side dominates the week as you reassess your finances to make some sensible adjustments in what you plan to spend and what you expect to save. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected meeting with a former colleague opens some interesting possibilities. But you need to press for full disclosure before making a decision. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent flurry of activity eases by midweek, giving you time to readjust your disrupted schedule and make new plans for a weekend getaway. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re usually the one who gives advice. But now it’s time to open yourself up to counsel from friends who have your best interests at heart. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might find resistance to your call for a full inquiry into a workplace problem. But by week’s end even the most rigid naysayers begin to come around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recurring problem surfaces once again. Maybe it’s time you used your creative talents to help you find a new approach to resolving it once and for all. BORN THIS WEEK: You are guided in what you do both by your intelligence and your emotions. An acting career would suit you quite well. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Between the 15th and 18th centuries, ornate millwork was largely reserved for royalty or the very wealthy. Skilled carpenters would hand carve each piece, taking weeks to finish most projects. Eventually, millwork became more commonplace. Distinguishing one property from another today could mean turning back to the more distinctive designs of the past.

Electrical systems are the heart of a home, delivering power where it is needed. It is essential to keep such systems up-to-date so they can handle the power demands of everyday life.

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

(NAPSI)—When the temperature’s rising, your energy costs don’t have to. These tips from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can help: 1. Keep the Heat Out and the Cool In—Sealing and insulating your home can save you up to $200 a year in utility bills. Find and seal air leaks with spray foam, caulk and weather stripping. Seal and insulate the cooling system ducts in your attic. Considering new windows? ENERGY STAR certified windows have coatings that let in light but keep out heat. Replacing old windows with these lowers household energy bills 12 percent on average. Also, keep shades down and drapes closed. 2. Maintain Your Cooling System—Have a contractor check and clean evaporator and condenser air-conditioning coils, check your central air conditioner’s refrigerant level and adjust if necessary, and clean and adjust blower components. Inspect, clean or change your system’s air filter every three months. 3. Need a Room AC?—If you’re getting a room air conditioner, be aware that models with the ENERGY STAR label have been independently certified to deliver energy savings, comfort, and improved sealing and insulation. On average, they cost as little as $70 per year to run. A room air conditioner with connected functionality can: • Turn off the unit remotely using your phone or computer; • Schedule changes to temperature settings based on your needs; • Get feedback on the energy use of the product. Choose the right size AC. An oversized unit will only remove some of the humidity, leaving the room with a damp, clammy feeling. When installing an AC, follow the instructions and use the insulation materials included. 4. Get Set for Savings—Install a new ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat for energy savings with environmental benefits, reliable performance, and convenience, insight and control. A Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat can automatically adjust heating and cooling temperature settings for optimal performance. If you have a manual or programmable thermostat, set the temperature up to save energy when you’re asleep or away. 5. Choose and Use Products to Keep Your Cool—In hot weather, use an ENERGY STAR certified ceiling fan in the counterclockwise direction. This creates a wind-chill effect, making you “feel” cooler. Replace incandescent lightbulbs with ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs. These produce about 70 to 90 percent less heat, so they’re safer and can cut energy costs. For more information and tips, visit www.energystar.gov/cooling.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

1. Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat the oven to 350 F. Generously butter the bottom and sides of a 9-inch springform pan. 2. To make the crust: Pulse the pecans, flour and sugar in a food processor until the nuts are finely ground. Add the butter and pulse just until combined. Press the crust evenly over the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of the pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until light brown. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 F. 3. To make the filling: Mash the blackberries and sugar together in a medium saucepan with a pastry blender or a fork. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries begin to release their juices. Stir in the cornstarch, bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, and boil for 1 minute. Pour the purée through a coarse strainer set over a small bowl, pressing hard on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Refrigerate, tightly covered, until thoroughly chilled. 4. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the cream cheese in a large bowl for about 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the condensed milk, zest, lime juice, and vanilla, scraping down the side of the bowl as necessary. Reduce the speed to medium and add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Pour the batter into the pan. 5. Transfer the blackberry purée to a small glass measure. Drizzle it in a spiral pattern over the batter, then swirl a table knife through the batter to marbleize it. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until the cheesecake is puffed on the sides and still slightly jiggly in the center. Let cool on a wire rack. 6. Refrigerate the cheesecake, tightly covered, for at least 8 hours, until thoroughly chilled and set, or for up to 2 days. 7. To serve, run a sharp knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the cake and remove the side of the pan. Cut the cheesecake into thin wedges with a sharp knife dipped into hot water and wiped dry after each cut.

The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Danielle Nahas as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout by Susan Cook Girl Scouts of Western New York are proud to announce Danielle Nahas of Spencerport, NY, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Nahas’ project, Helping Youth Meet Their Potential, involved creating a book for independent living targeted at young adults in at-risk situations. Nahas partnered with the Center for Youth in Rochester, which offers help and support for teens and youth who are considered to be at risk, such as those who have run away from home or have an unstable family. Knowing the youths would struggle to find an adult to support them as they transitioned to independent living, Nahas hoped her book would provide tips and serve as a guide to get them started. The book’s content included easy cooking recipes (with many accessible items at the Center for Youth’s cabinet), laundry tips, first aid information, and other useful advice.

Nahas stated, “I can empathize with this age group about how hard it is to start transferring into adulthood. However, I do have a good support system in my life and at home so I can only imagine how much harder it would be for those who do not have this to start a new part of their life.”

Nahas also commented, “Girl Scouts has made me gain a greater appreciation for volunteering and making an impact on other people’s lives. I have continued these values into college where I am a part of a service organization that requires 15 hours of service a semester. I enjoyed this so much that I am now a part of the philanthropy committee. I hope that I can always help others in college and even into my career.”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Case Against Hydrogen Peroxide

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My dental hygienist recommends rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs after flossing. Lately I have heard the using too much hydrogen peroxide can be harmful. What are your thoughts? -- T.W. ANSWER: Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antiseptic that has some usefulness for household objects; however, I don’t recommend it as an oral rinse. It is too toxic to tissues. In a 1993 study, even hydrogen peroxide solutions diluted to half and quarter strengths caused damage to mucous membranes and caused “overwhelmingly negative subjective reactions.” Thus they were not recommended for oral care. A regular mouthwash is a much better choice, and your dentist can prescribe a medicated mouthwash if needed. Incidentally, I don’t recommend hydrogen peroxide for cleaning cuts and abrasions, either. It isn’t effective at inhibiting bacterial growth. I recommend careful cleaning with mild soap and water or saline and an antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a blood-borne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy by an ophthalmologist, whom I saw for an eye exam recently. Would you please tell me more about this disease? Is there any treatment? What can I expect in the future? It is getting harder to read and do close work. -- N.O. ANSWER: Fuchs’ dystrophy is a condition of older eyes, which happens when the cells in the innermost lining of the cornea (the translucent, colorless front part of the eye) degenerate, causing, initially, deposits in the cornea and later swelling of the cornea. The disease has a complex genetic pattern of inheritance, and tends to progress slowly. Treatments include soft contact lenses to “bandage” the cornea, and eyedrops. Transplant surgery of the affected lining of the cornea (called Descemet’s membrane), or the whole cornea, is the definitive treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Your Signs of atrial fibrillation — and how to treat it Palpitations of the heart or uncomfortable sensations in the chest can be distressing. Thoughts of heart attack may come to mind, and that anxiety can only exacerbate the situation. While heart attack might be the first thing people think of when experiencing chest discomfort, atrial fibrillation may be to blame for such feelings. Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that may lead to heart-related complications. The American Heart Association says that at least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFib. Although treatable, without proper diagnosis, AFib may lead to blood clots, stroke and even heart failure. Many people with AFib experience no symptoms at all and are unaware they have it until it is discovered during a physical examination. For those who experience symptoms, The Mayo Clinic lists these as some of the more common: • Palpitations, which can be sensations of a flip-flopping in the chest or even a racing feeling. • Fatigue • Reduced ability to exercise • Lightheadedness • Chest pain or shortness of breath • Dizziness and weakness

AFib is more common among people with clogged arteries or diabetes and may develop following valve surgery. AFib also is more common in people with coronary heart disease. As a person ages, his or her risk for AFib increases. Stress also can be a major factor in triggering AFib, according to StopAfib.org.

Once AFib is diagnosed, managing risk factors and restoring When the heart is working normally, it contracts and relaxes in a heart to normal rhythm becomes the priority. Thank you so much to the kind woman at our local pool store who gave me a reference for a pool contractor. We have a nearly new pool from a friend of the family; it was brand new & up for 1 year & taken down for family business needs. We were left in the dust with another contractor after we made arrangements, including the permit & contract, to install the pool at our home. Afterwards, we couldn't find anyone willing to drive out of Monroe County or who would be 'possibly' available by late July. I called your reference (Greg) on Friday, who came to our house to survey the site & pool equipment. He said everything was in perfect shape & that he would get us installed this week. Kindness is hard to find. Thank you again for approaching me at the pool store & helping our family.

Every day we entrust our children to “strangers” and expect them to return home safe each night. These adults have been hired by our school district. This means they have been thoroughly checked and are deemed as safe adults. When teachers, counselors, and bus drivers make decisions and rules to keep our children safe they should not be questioned. When

On June 8th, my husband and I were having lunch at the Dutch Hollow Restaurant in East Avon. The waitress had picked up our dirty plates and we thought she picked up our bill by mistake to. We asked about the bill only to be told that someone had paid for our meal. This was so unexpected but so appreciated. I have done this for others in the past, and now I know how they must have felt. We were grateful and blessed. Many thanks to whoever you are. I will again pay it forward! God Bless, Robin and Rick Dieffenbacher I would like to thank the hardworking women of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Geneseo

According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.
