My name is Cheddar. I just turned 3 years old. I’m my person’s stress busting kitty! I’m a very lovable and playful boy, too! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Gunner is a 2-yearold male Rottweiler mix who weighs 84 lbs. This handsome guy is eager to please when positive reinforcement & treats are involved. He’s particular about which other dogs he wants to interact with & he’ll need a home where everyone is bigger than him because he is somewhat oblivious to his size. The behavior folks at Lollypop Farm will meet with prospective adopters (and their dogs if you have any already) to make sure it’s a good match & discuss Gunner’s training needs going forward. Bring everyone, dogs included, to meet Gunner at Lollypop Farm.

Extreme heat can be dangerous to pets, who often suffer in silence when dealing with the consequences of extreme heat. Pet owners who take certain precautions and learn to recognize signs of a pet struggling with heat can better protect their animals from succumbing to rising temperatures.

We are forever grateful to them all, and would like to share with you the members of our current staff. These are the people who make it all possible! Last week, we tragically lost one of the beloved members of our Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Judy Gillis was the assistant to our Sales Manager. Her duties were many, and because of her position she was involved in almost every aspect of our business. She was thorough and efficient in her work and a good friend to us all. She will be sadly missed.

…stay tuned for volume 12 next month

1. Know the Lay of the Land - Assess the gardening conditions in your yard before you dig your first hole or plant your first seed. Conditions such as sun, shade, soil type, climate and moisture levels are all key factors to consider when creating your gardening plan. 2. Prepare Your Soil - Healthy soil translates to better plant growth, so be sure your soil has the nutrients it needs to flourish. Talk to a representative at your local home and garden center for tips on choosing the right type of fertilizer based on the soil and the plants you’re growing. 3. Choose and Care for Plants Expertly - Once you’ve prepared your gardening space, you can begin to explore plant options available. To prevent the discouraging cycle of trial and error gardening with new plants, try Black & Decker’s new PlantSmart digital plant care sensor, a revolutionary gardening tool that provides expert advice for growing and maintaining all types of plants and flowers, both indoors and out. Its reusable, waterresistant sensor uses patented technology to measure key environmental information from sunlight and temperature to moisture, soil conditions and more. Your readings are then uploaded to your personal PlantSmart online account and combined with real-time climate and horticultural information from your local area, for a foolproof gardening experience. This tool will help ensure you are choosing and growing the right plants in your new garden. 4. Take the First Dig - When you’re ready, dig a hole that is slightly bigger and deeper than your plant’s roots, and gently place the plant in the prepared hole. Pat the surrounding soil down firmly, but don’t pack it, and be sure to leave enough space between plants. If using seeds, refer to the package’s directions to gauge the soil depth needed for proper growth; drop the seeds in and place soil firmly on top.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

arborscapertree.com HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

David Marsh, A Life of Courage Born in 1940, David Marsh contracted rheumatic fever at age six leading to many hospital stays and a life bound to a wheelchair. However, due to the compassion of the Fairport community, he was able to realize many of his dreams before his 1964 death. Recently, his sister donated many of his favorite items to the Perinton Historical Society and are on exhibit through 2018 at the Fairport Museum (18 Perrin St.), helping visitors remember and honor his short life. REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS In addition to fresh produce, farmers’ markets may offer baked and other prepared goods. Shopkeepers often mingle with their customers, offering trade secrets and recipe ideas. Additionally, local farm families supported by farmers’ markets generally offer supreme customer service to keep shoppers coming back week after week.

Pet$aver Healthy Pet Superstore Russell & Brenda Herman established their first store in Greece in 1994. Their Rottweiler Bucky had terrible skin and coat due to being fed poor quality pet food. Once they were educated on the advantages of feeding a great pet food and healing their dog in under a month, they decided that they needed to get this message to every pet owner. They then opened their first store. The primary focus is on getting their customer’s pets on great quality foods. In addition to providing very personal customer service, they offer a full line of pet products and self-washes for dogs. Pets make people happy and are part of the family. If they can help improve the health of those pets and improve the bond people have with their pets, that makes them happy. Between the 4 stores, corporate office, and warehouse, they employ about 45 people. Pet$aver’s Healthy Pet Superstore are suckers for every cause, besides being active in their local Chambers, Rotary, church, etc. They are very proud to be able to donate all of the dog and cat food fed at Lollypop Farm and Rochester Animal Services. With the help of the customers and pet food manufacturers, they developed a program to cover this entire cost. Doing so frees up funds for them to use for other projects such as spay/neuter programs and pet ownership education. They also sponsor running races, Veteran’s Outreach Center, CURE Childhood Cancer, many local

pet rescue groups, Scouts, etc. Their family believes in serving their community and their country. Both of their children are active duty military members, so helping and honoring our veterans is one of Pet$aver’s major causes. Isn’t it great to have your pet eagerly awaiting your arrival at home? That’s how they want you to feel when you come to Pet$aver. They especially love it when you bring your pet with you. There have been many times they have given customers hugs who have come into our stores to tell us that they just lost their beloved pet and knew that we would understand their loss. Then there is the customer who brings in their new puppy or kitten knowing that we would be thrilled to meet them. Pets are family and they get it. They are going to do everything that they can to make them happy. Congratulations to Pet$avers Healthy Pet Superstore as June 2018’s Business of the Month!

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

May, June and July consistently rank among the most popular months to get married. These months typically provide pleasant weather, and if it does rain, it’s often in the form of a brief thunderstorm.

Summer is prime vacation season when travelers take trips to every corner of the world. While faraway destinations abound, those looking for fun can also find enjoyable activities much closer to home.

Your 3 money-saving travel tips for retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. 1. Take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. 2. Don’t overlook travel agencies. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many

Wishing You A FANTASTIC 4TH OF JULY!

specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors to their countries want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. 3. Travel as part of a group. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it’s with a retirement community, religious organization or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters. Many working professionals hope to spend the bulk of their retirement traveling the globe. While such a goal is potentially costly, there are various ways to save and still see the world.

HOME-BREWED COFFEE THAT’S AS GOOD AS IT GETS (NAPSI)—Have you ever pondered the delicious cup of coffee served up at your favorite coffee shop and wished your hurried morning home-brewed cup could be just as good? If you use one of the push-button pod brewing systems, you are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor, value and the environment. Do you realize that when you buy coffee pods, you are paying about $40 per pound of coffee and adding greatly to the local landfill? A drip coffeemaker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but you probably waste half the coffee that you brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers, you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and what’s more, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer such as the AeroPress coffeemaker you can brew a smooth, rich cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The AeroPress has the unique capability to brew espresso so you can make café-quality lattes at home. The process is simple, cleanup is fast and easy, and the grounds, including the filter, are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Use a manual brewing device, brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and you’ll get the most out of every bag of coffee you buy.

Blackberry-Ripple Lime Cheesecake Serves 10 Crust 11⁄2 cups pecans 2 tablespoons sugar 1⁄4 cup (1⁄2 stick) unsalted butter, melted Filling 2 6-ounce packages ripe blackberries 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar 1 teaspoon cornstarch 11⁄2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons finely grated lime zest 1⁄4 cup fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 3 large eggs, at room temperature 1. Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat the oven to 350 F. Generously butter the bottom and sides of a 9-inch springform pan. 2. To make the crust: Pulse the pecans, flour and sugar in a food processor until the nuts are finely ground. Add the butter and pulse just until combined. Press the crust evenly over the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of the pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until light brown. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 F. 3. To make the filling: Mash the blackberries and sugar together in a medium saucepan with a pastry blender or a fork. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries begin to release their juices. Stir in the cornstarch, bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, and boil for 1 minute. Pour the purée through a coarse strainer set over a small bowl, pressing hard on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Refrigerate, tightly covered, until thoroughly chilled. 4. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the cream cheese in a large bowl for about 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the condensed milk, zest, lime juice, and vanilla, scraping down the side of the bowl as necessary. Reduce the speed to medium and add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Pour the batter into the pan. 5. Transfer the blackberry purée to a small glass measure. Drizzle it in a spiral pattern over the batter, then swirl a table knife through the batter to marbleize it. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until the cheesecake is puffed on the sides and still slightly jiggly in the center. Let cool on a wire rack. 6. Refrigerate the cheesecake, tightly covered, for at least 8 hours, until thoroughly chilled and set, or for up to 2 days. 7. To serve, run a sharp knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the cake and remove the side of the pan. Cut the cheesecake into thin wedges with a sharp knife dipped into hot water and wiped dry after each cut.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Genetic Screening May be Helpful for Some --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old female who weighs 97 pounds and is 4 feet, 10 inches tall. I’m a non-smoker, non-drinker. I’m a mother of three, take no medications and have no medical issues except acid reflux. My brother died of Ewing sarcoma at 6. My 10-year-old sister died of dysgerminoma. Mom was diagnosed with colon cancer at 47 and died at 52. Dad died of pancreatic cancer at 81 after being in remission from prostate cancer for five years. On Mom’s side, her sister and aunt also had colon cancer. What screenings do I need? What screenings are needed for my two daughters, ages 41 and 43? My daughters’ paternal grandmother died of breast cancer at 72. My other siblings, a 56-year-old brother and 68-year-old sister, are healthy. -- G.T. ANSWER: With so many cancers in your family, I would strongly suggest a visit with a genetic counselor. The combination of colon, pancreatic and prostate cancer suggests a genetic syndrome, such as Lynch syndrome and BRCA 1 or 2, although your history isn’t classic for either of these. There are many less-common familial syndromes that increase the risk for various cancers, and we are gradually increasing our knowledge of them. Some of the cancers you mention are not associated with any known syndrome, such as Ewing sarcoma, a primary bone cancer, and dysgerminoma, a rare type of ovarian cancer. It’s possible that your family has just been very unfortunate. Still, I would recommend getting more knowledge about any genetic risk you may have. With this information, you can learn the right screening strategies for yourself, as well as obtain information that could potentially be valuable to your siblings and children. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: At first the doctors thought my wife had myasthenia gravis. After a series of tests, it was determined that she did not have that disease. However, the neurologists now think she has mitochondrial myopathy. Can you tell us a little more about this disease, please? -- R.R. ANSWER: Mitochondrial myopathies are a group of disorders of the mitochondria, which are responsible for the production of energy inside the cell. Almost all cells contain mitochondria, but muscle cells are loaded with them. Since they do so much of the energy consumption, muscles are most affected. These disorders used to be considered rare, but it is now thought that 1 in 10,000 people may have one of these disorders (which makes it uncommon, but not rare). Mitochondria come almost completely from the mother, and as a result, a family history of muscle problems in the maternal line suggests this diagnosis. Mitochondrial myopathies range dramatically in severity. They are diagnosed with a combination of blood testing, EKG (since some can affect heart muscle), EMG (a test of the electrical activity of muscle), muscle biopsy and genetic tests of the mitochondria. Unfortunately, I can’t give you any details at all about prognosis or treatment, which require a specific diagnosis. Most of these have no specific treatment, though L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 and creatine often are tried. Your wife’s neurologists will give you more information. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

Batavia City Firefighters, IAFF Local 896 thanks the community for their patience in the downtown area during the MDA Fill the Boot event on 6/15. The event raised over $9,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in five hours. Thanks also go out to local businesses that have hosted our traveling boot throughout the year. I was at Mugsy's on 5 & 20 in Bloomfield this week. The staff, service and food were wonderful.

The servings are good and the prices are reasonable. The owners mentioned they had only opened two weeks ago. I definitely will be returning to the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
