COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Not prepping the food: The French culinary term for preparing to cook is “mise en place.” This is especially important when grilling, as cooks must deal with faster cooking times than they would otherwise encounter when cooking meals in the stove.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi friends! My name is

Fitzgerald, Fitzy for short. I’m only 7 months old and have had a rough start to this thing called life. I’m paralyzed in my back legs. Don’t be sad for me, it doesn’t stop me from doing anything besides running! My new mom is saving up for something called a wheelchair. My mom says I’m gonna have the best of everything in life. I don’t really know what that means, but I hope it involves treats!

Sugar is a 7-year-old female Beagle mix who came to Lollypop Farm through no fault of her own. This beautiful girl is nervous in new situations. She does warm up to new folks but it takes some time, some patience, and some treats. The behavior staff at Lollypop Farm will meet with prospective adopters to help plan a smooth transition to your home. In addition, Sugar & her new humans will have a free training session to teach you how to help this sweet girl get acclimated to her new life. Bring everyone, dogs included, to meet Sugar at Lollypop Farm. Lollypop Farm, The Humane Society of Greater Rochester 585-223-1330 • info@lollypop.org www.lollypop.org/petoftheweek

Extreme heat can be dangerous to pets, who often suffer in silence when dealing with the consequences of extreme heat. Pet owners who take certain precautions and learn to recognize signs of a pet struggling with heat can better protect their animals from succumbing to rising temperatures.

Your When is clumsiness a cause for concern? Who hasn’t tripped over his own feet or knocked over a water glass on a table? No one is immune to the occasional clumsiness, but some people may grow concerned that their bouts of clumsiness are becoming more frequent. For healthy people, bumping into a wall when misjudging a corner or dropping silverware on the floor is often a minor, isolated incident. Lack of concentration or multitasking often may be to blame. In 2007, Professor Charles Swanik and a research team at the University of Delaware studied athletes to discover why some seem to be more injury prone than others. Researchers found that clumsy athletes’ brains seemed to have “slowed processing speed,” which referred to how their brains understand new information and respond to it. But clumsiness also can be a sign of a bigger issue at play, namely motor problems within the brain. According to Taylor Harrison, MD, clinical instructor in the neuromuscular division of Emory University, coordination of the body is complicated and tied to both motor and sensory systems. That means the eyes, brain, nerves,

cerebellum, which specializes in coordination and balance, muscles, and bones must work together. Clumsiness can result from stroke, seizure disorders, brain trauma or the presence of tumors, and other conditions. Healthline also says that clumsiness may be an early symptom of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s affects the central nervous system and can impair motor skills. Alzheimer’s slowly damages and kills brain cells and may cause issues with coordination. This may be the case with other dementias as well. Clumsiness may sometimes result from a lack of sleep or overconsumption of alcohol. Arthritis also can lead to clumsiness when joint pain and restrictive movements make it challenging to get around. Psychologists may suggest cognitive behavioral therapy or propose performing tasks with more mindfulness to reduce clumsiness. If that doesn’t work, men and women should visit their physicians, who can conduct tests to rule out certain things and provide peace of mind.

Protecting Honeybees Stagger your planting throughout the growing season. Rather than planting everything at once, stagger planting for flowers and other plants that have blooms. This gives bees plenty of pollen sources throughout early summer and into fall. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your zeal for challenges usually works well for you. But this week it’s best to avoid jumping into new situations without more information. Vital news emerges by the weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s patience pays off as that pesky problem works itself out without taking too much of your valuable time. A new task opens interesting possibilities. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those suggestions you want to share need to be set aside for a while so you can focus on the job at hand. There’ll be time later to put your ideas into a workable format. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be sure about your sources before you use the information in any decision you reach about your new project. Some of the data might be out of date or misinterpreted. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A sudden challenge might rattle you at first. But pump up that strong Lion’s heart with a full measure of courage, and face it with the continuing support of family and friends. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Watch your expenses this week so you can have a financial cushion to fall back on should things tighten up later this month. Money matters ease by the 1st. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Uncertainty over workplace policy creates anxiety and confusion among your colleagues. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked, once again, to help work things out. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The workweek keeps you busy tying up loose ends and checking data that needs to be verified. The weekend offers a chance to relax and restore your spent energies. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is not the best time to go to extremes to prove a point. Better to set a sensible goal now and move forward. There’ll be time later to take the bolder course. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A step-by-step progression is the better way to move ahead. Taking shortcuts could be risky at this time. Important news arrives on the 1st. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Avoid getting drawn into workplace disputes that should be handled by those directly involved. Instead, spend your energy developing those new ideas. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You still need to be prudent about money matters. But things start to ease by the end of the week. A weekend encounter with an old friend brings welcome news. BORN THIS WEEK: You handle challenging situations with boldness when necessary and caution when called for. I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

Control mold when using air conditioning Exposure to mold in a home can be hazardous, leading to any number of adverse health effects, including respiratory distress. Certain strains of mold may release mycotoxins, which can cause bleeding in the lungs and pneumonia. Mold can grow in any dark and damp spot, which makes air conditioning units prime locations for mold proliferation. Mold spores can be circulated through a home via a central air conditioning system or window air conditioning unit. Mold spores in the air are very easy to inhale, especially for young children and elderly people. Air conditioners also are susceptible to mold growth. Preventing mold from becoming a problem means being in tune to indicators that mold may be present, and then taking the necessary actions to eradicate that mold and preventing future growth. Visible mold or a musty smell when operating the air conditioner are prime indicators of a problem.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Hearing Loss Indeed Possible After Surgery --DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had a hip replacement. I am 84, with hearing loss. My family says my hearing is worse after the operation. My daughter talked with several seniors who experienced the same thing. They think it has to do with the anesthesia. Fact or fiction? -- D.W. ANSWER: Possibly fact. Hearing loss is a known and rare occurrence after surgery, and there are several ways in which it can happen. You mentioned anesthesia: Several anesthetic agents, especially nitrous oxide, can cause temporary hearing loss, but nitrous oxide is not used as often during surgery as it once was. Changes in the fluid pressure in the ear also can cause both temporary and permanent hearing loss. Finally, antibiotics given around the time of an operation can cause hearing loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently attended a free introductory visit at my local health spa. It’s an interesting process. There is a circuit with 12 machines and 12 mats for doing cardio. Each exercise is done for 30 seconds, then you move to the next station. The circuit is supposed to be done twice at each session, three times per week. Can this really work to help you lose weight and get fit? Need I say again, 30 seconds ... really? Your opinion please. -- E.Y.M. ANSWER: There are two questions, and the first is on fitness. There, the answer is a resounding yes. High-intensity interval training has been clearly proven to improve muscle and cardiovascular fitness. If you were to follow the program at the gym, working hard but not overdoing it, you certainly would find that your ability to do the exercises would improve, your stamina would increase, and you’d likely feel better and have more energy. A 24-minute workout (24 stations of 30 seconds each, done twice) is enough (and a LOT better than no workout at all). Unfortunately, just doing the exercise will not make you lose much weight. Losing weight comes from better dietary habits, which can help you eat less food and still feel satisfied. The combination of increased exercise and a little less food, especially less low-quality (“junk”) food, may help you lose a few pounds. Losing weight shouldn’t be the goal, in my opinion. Losing weight and keeping it off is tough to do, but by exercising regularly and eating well, you can dramatically improve overall health and well-being even without weight loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an itchy-ear problem. It even wakes me up at night. I’ve tried Cortizone-10, hydrogen peroxide solution, ear baths and cotton swabs. Nothing seems to work for long. Can you help me? -- G.P. ANSWER: Stop the hydrogen peroxide -- it is very drying and can damage the sensitive skin in the ear. The hydrocortisone should work for many common conditions, but if it hasn’t, then your regular doctor, a dermatologist or ENT doctor should take a look in your ear and see what is going on. Seborrheic dermatitis and eczema are common conditions that can affect the skin in the ear. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Take Steps to Reduce Conflicts Between Bears and People The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Black bears have been keeping DEC Wildlife staff busy, with numerous human-bear conflicts already this summer. Bears are often attracted to bird feeders, improperly stored garbage, messy grills, and pet food that is left outdoors. When people allow bears to have access to human-related foods, it encourages bear behavior that put people, property and bears at risk. Reducing human-bear conflicts requires changing human behavior. When we reduce attractants for bears, we protect people and property, and we do what’s best for bears too. To Reduce Human-Bear Conflicts: • Take down bird feeders after April 1st. • Store garbage in a bear-resistant garbage can or keep inside until the morning of pick up. • Clean up grease from grills after use. • Feed pets indoors. • Owners of backyard chicken flocks in bear country should also take steps to secure their flock and feed. If You Encounter a Bear: Never Approach, Surround, or Corner a Bear - bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective. Never Run From a Bear - stay calm, speak in a loud and calm voice,␣slowly back away␣and leave the area. Use Noise to Scare Away Bears From Your Campsite yell, clap, or bang pots immediately upon sighting a bear near your campsite. Do Not Throw Your Backpack or Food Bag at an Approaching Bear. • Doing so will only encourage bears to approach and “bully” people to get food. • By teaching a bear to approach humans for food, you are endangering yourself, other campers/ residents, and the bears. In Your Yard: • From a safe distance, make loud noises by shouting or banging pots to scare the bear away. • Once the bear leaves, remove all attractants such as bird seed, garbage, and pet food.

Go Figure!

• Ask neighbors to remove attractants. In a Building: • Give the bear a clear escape route. • Leave any doors open as you back away from the bear. • Do not lock the bear in a room. If a Bear Becomes Aggressive and Approaches You: • Raise your arms and speak in a loud, calm voice while backing away. Charges You: • Stand your ground. • If you have bear spray, dispense directly at the bear. Please follow the link leaving the DEC’s website to learn about the proper use of bear spray. Follows You: • Stay together. • Do not run, but continue to back away while speaking loudly. If the Bear Continues to Follow You: • Stand your ground. • Intimidate by making yourself look bigger by waving arms, clapping, shouting, banging sticks. • Prepare to fight or use bear spray. If the Bear Makes Contact With You: • Fight back with anything at hand (knife, stick, rocks, fists). Visit DEC’s website to learn more about how to reduce human-bear conflicts.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

GRANT AWARDED FOR NOVEL COMMUNITY HEALTH SOLUTIONS (NAPSI)—Recent research has revealed that community environments play a crucial role in health outcomes. People living just five miles apart can have a difference in life expectancy of more than 20 years. To help close the gap and improve life expectancy for everyone, the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke—the American Heart Association—is working within communities and offering up to $30,000 to find fresh ideas. Doctor’s Advice “I know the central role that social determinants of health play in our long-term risk of heart disease, stroke and other devastating illnesses. Even though heart disease and stroke are preventable, and we tell people what they need to do to reduce their risks, for many people, it’s not that easy. Knowing what to do and having access to what you need to do it are two different things,” explained Keith B. Churchwell, M.D., chair of the American Heart Association’s Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health Task Force and senior vice president, operations and executive director at the Heart and Vascular Center and Transplantation Center, Yale-New Haven Health.

Applications from businesses with creative solutions to community issues that prevent people from having equal access to health can be made through June 30, 2018. Candidates must complete an application and upload a 90-second-or-less video at empoweredtoserve.org. Then candidates are guided through a rigorous, six-to-eight-week curriculum that focuses on customer discovery, marketing strategies and brand message storytelling so they can best show the viability of their projects.

585-746-7179 PinnacleRochester.com

Final candidates will present their projects to a panel of judges from marketing, media and investment companies. The winner will meet leaders in the Association’s affiliates, corporations and the community to help continue their projects. Learn More: For additional information and to register or nominate candidates, visit www.empoweredtoserve.org.

Finding Answers The grant-based initiative to identify innovative, clearly defined urban business solutions to drive community change to improve health and wellbeing is called the EmPOWERED To Serve Urban Health Accelerator™. Its goal is to increase healthy living behaviors, enhance the chain of survival, and cultivate community transformation by addressing such factors as inadequate housing, early childhood development and healthy food access. To that end, through the Accelerator, select candidates are awarded grants to activate critical projects that will improve urban community health.

Thank you to the entire staff of the Livonia Public Library! Every time I go there, the staff is friendly and helpful. I cannot tell you how much that means to me as a patron. The library has such a warm, inviting atmosphere and it’s because of its terrific staff. I hope the Director realizes what an asset you are and treats you well. Thanks for all you do!!! JMH

To the misogynist attention seeker who thinks that a woman should take on her husband’s last name when they get married. Why is it any of your business what other couples do? It is their own decision, and for whatever reason, the woman decided to keep or hyphenate her last name. We no longer live in the 19th century where women were property and obligated to take on her husband’s name to show that he owns her. Women are free to do what they want to do, and I am sure they discussed it with

A nice couple ahead of me in line at the grocery store paid for my groceries. We should all be so kind and pay it forward. I want to thank the Livonia Ambulance crew for coming to my rescue June 18th at 5:30 in the morning when I dislocated my hip. Both of you were absolutely wonderful. You made my traumatic experience bearable. You both were so kind and caring. Thank you so much!

their partner as to what their married name will be. I suggest you keep your childish and outdated opinions to yourself and stop butting into business that does not affect you in the least bit. We have spoken to our village neighbor about feeding the deer and squirrels. They have finally stopped feeding deer once I explained it was actually illegal, but they continue to spread peanuts all over their deck. It has now caused a huge problem; the deer and squirrels now destroy our perennial gardens that we have worked so hard for and spent so much time and money on. We have asked nicely to refrain from doing so but we are ignored. We had no trouble with wildlife until they moved in. The squirrels now make a mess of our deck and yard. The deer eat all our plants. Our gardens were started long before they moved in. We are trying to add beauty to our home and the village. We are respectful of our neighbors but we do not receive the same respect.

On July 3rd at a local store in Livonia I had an angel come to my aid when I had a small problem with a sandwich tray opening up on me. (Oh and by the way it was a good sandwich tra, a lot of food for a reasonable price); anyway this lady helped me not only get the tray fixed but carried it to my car. I didn't get your name but your act of kindness made my day. I thank God for his special angels he sends us. God bless you.

In my area there are several people flying the Confederate flag. Researching the Secessionist papers of the states that seceded from the Union all include a statement that one of the reasons for secession was the potential denial of slave ownership in the United States as well as the justification of their position on the matter. The states would no longer have the right to own other human beings. This is the heritage that those who identify with the Confederacy are so proud of. Despite what one wants to believe the Secessionist papers speak for themselves. Find them online and read them in their entirety. The Confederate flag represents the states that fought for the right to own slaves. That is the bottom line and that is what you are supporting. Not a heritage but a horror. Around the anniversary of my husband's passing, I placed a lovely lavender, purple and white hanging basket at his gravesite. Several days later somebody stole

that hanging basket! How cruel can someone be? May that thief live with their conscience. I am disheartened and ashamed of the representation of our town Little League by the coaches and the core values, or lack thereof, they showed in the way they chose players for the All-Star team. I'm not saying this because my child wasn't picked, if you're good you're good, if you're not you're not, but that wasn't the case here. Kids who play well but have appalling sportsmanship (ie. screaming at the coaches, slamming their equipment, not shaking other player’s hands) were chosen over kids who play well AND have great attitudes, kids who are true AllStars. FYI, they're not fooling anyone, everyone knows the system is rigged through jealous fathers living vicariously through their sons, serving themselves, not the players. Looking forward to the years when they're in the stands!

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
